I brought in a very sick female stray cat who had been living in my backyard for years. She had become part of our lives -- gentle, trusting, and clearly at the end of her strength. I wanted to help her and do what was right, but this place completely shattered my trust. From the moment we arrived, she was weak and moving slowly. Instead of being honest and telling us that the kindest, most humane option would be to let her go peacefully, they insisted on doing a long list of tests -- over $700 worth -- knowing full well she was on her last breath. The next day, the doctor called with the results and said she was very sick and recovery chances were extremely slim. Then came the question: Did I want them to put her to sleep? I told them I wanted to be there with her, and I also made it clear that I was very unhappy with how the situation had been handled. The receptionist quoted me $300 for euthanasia, and I reluctantly agreed, even though I already felt taken advantage of. When I arrived, I expressed again how wrong this felt -- that they had used our love and emotions to squeeze out every dollar they could before admitting the truth. They guided me to a small room and told me to wait so I could be there with her. After several minutes, the doctor came in with a sad look and told me... she had already died. No one called. No one checked in sooner. No one seemed to care. Yes, they refunded the euthanasia fee -- but that doesn't undo what they did. My wife and I left heartbroken -- not just from losing a sweet soul who trusted us, but from realizing how cold and unethical this place truly is. They took advantage of compassion, made money off a dying animal, and then delivered the news like it was nothing. I will never take another animal here. I wanted to share feedback from our recent visit with our kittens. When I asked the veterinary assistant to wear gloves while administering vaccinations, she responded by saying, "I don't want your leukemia." Following that comment, her demeanor changed noticeably. She appeared visibly irritated and began handling items abruptly and slamming equipment, which created an uncomfortable environment during the appointment. My request was simply about comfort and hygiene, not a challenge to her expertise. I found both the comment and the behavior unprofessional. As a result of this interaction, I chose not to proceed with the full rounds of vaccinations and treatments we had planned and completed only the examinations. I had fully intended to continue all care with your clinic. Unfortunately, due to this experience, I will no longer be returning after more than 20 years as a client. This was not a decision I anticipated making, but the interaction significantly impacted my trust and comfort moving forward. I went there on Saturday. The office was very nice. Quick service and...then Dr Nolasco came in to check out my dog for skin allergies. I also advised that I was NOT looking to spend a lot of $. He said he definitely understood. Great start. So the consultation went well and his office gal came into the room after he left and advised that it would be 910.00$$PLUS for the appointment. It's Sunday and my dog needed to be seen. I didn't want to wait. The 2.5 star rating scared me, but they were the only vet open on Sunday in our vicinity. Our dog saw Dr. Katila and she was wonderful! I don't understand the poor Yelp ratings and I'm really glad we went. I called this place asking how much it would cost to euthanize my dog. He was obviously dying showing all signs plus his age ect. I just didn't want him suffering. Of course I'd like him checked out first hoping I was wrong but this is what happened. I was quoted a price on the phone that was reasonable and scheduled to come in that evening. Once arriving I was told to wait until a room was available .There was only one other person there but it still took 25 minutes. Once we were allowed to carry him in( he's 138 lbs by the way ) we got into a room and the first thing that comes out the dr's mouth is " man it smells bad in here". I tell him what's going on. He asks me a couple of questions, smells my dog's ear and agrees he should be put down. Tells me I have to leave the room while the IV is being put in which I thought was weird. His assistant or whatever she is comes in with the bill which was more than 3 times what I was told when I called so I said I couldn't do that. Immediately her attitude changed. She insisted I pay for the so called exam ( smelling his ear) before taking the dog as if I was going skip out without paying. When I asked the receptionist who I spoke with on the phone earlier she immediately got defensive saying it was a different employee that wasn't there at the moment . She starts telling me she heard the conversation and tells me I can leave now because she doesn't like liars. Why would I bother loading up my dog,asking my neighbor for a ride and coming down there? Just to lie about the quote I was given? Come on.The other girl( younger skinny girl) the assistant or whatever comes out there just to smile and shake her head. So I've been coming here since 2014 when the previous owners on this veterinarian and everything was great until it was taken over by a new doctor that. All they care about is money I get everyone needs to make money but to use the love for your pet is crazy. JOJO - beautiful16 yo tabby cat was loosing weight and not feeling well in July 2024 so I took him to see Dr Novasco, who treated him for a UTI infection, at the time testing positive for UTI. After doing a full blood work panel on him he determined Jojo had Cat Kidney Disease. He recommended a CKD diet but with no medical treatment plan for him. In good faith we followed the CKD diet. He really did not explain the best practice to treat Jojo since there is no cure for CKD or other possible tests at the time that he might need. Follow-up appts were not suggested to monitor his health. His health took a turn beginning of October he started to loose weight and not eating, blood in the urine, I took him to Dr Novasco on Thursday 10/10/24, found out he did not update his chart from when we spoke over the phone about his health condition and test results he had in July 24'. Jojo had another blood panel done to determine if there was a UTI infection. Before the results were confirmed, he prescribed the UTI RX and to start right away. He mentioned that he should have his blood pressure checked but would need to do another appt since he already did the UTI test. (I believe the blood pressure test should have been done back in July or August), Jojo started the medication, but started to throw up Saturday and Sunday. (Hence no call from dr Novasco on blood work results) I stopped the RX Saturday. Called Sunday,10/13, the on call vet told me he's UTi results were negative and to stop the RX. To give home acidity RX to break down the stomach acids. Jojo has not been eating and has stopped drinking water. Made an appt for Monday 10/14 evening to have Jojo looked at since his health has deteriorated. On Monday 10/14/24, we met with dr Novasco, states Jojo is hydrated and very weak. He can only feel one kidney during his check up. He decide to do the blood pressure test and prescribe hypertension RX and sub- q fluids (both RXs to start Tues 10/15 nite) after blood work done. He is given sub- q fluids. Jojo looks worn out and we leave. He sleeps through the night. Tues he does not want to leave his bed. I call Dr Novasco and he tells me to feed him with a syringe (food watered down) 10 ml within 45 mins every 4 hours, since Jojo can not stand up on his own, dr novasco indicates his potassium is probably low and needs to be seen again and to bring him in. He advises me to give him a call in the morning on Wednesday for update. Jojo passed away on Wednesday 10/16/24 at 3:02 am. I was there with him til his last breath. Jojo has closed his account tab with Dr. Novasco. I regret that Jojo did not have a peaceful passing, but instead Jojo was sent home Monday 10/14 with another bill paid for RXs Jojo did not need in the end. I agree with other reviews regarding Dr Novasco, on lack of communication, lack of compassion, money gouging and lack of empathy. I don't believe Dr Novasco knows how to care for a cat diagnosed with CKD, since he did a terrible job on providing the right treatment plan for JOJO. read more

I tried out this animal hospital for the first time in September of 2021 when my husky, Skylar, had her first seizure and the start of her many health problems. They were the only hospital in the area that were quick to give me an appointment for the following day. Skylar has paid many visits to this hospital and each time is greeted with such a kind embrace. I don't feel nervous at all when I hand over my pets to the staff! They always provide the best care, and are always ready to hear all my concerns. On a separate occasion in February Skylar had a pancreatic attack in which she was very ill and Dr. Nolasco allowed me to bring her in the same day to be treated, this is almost unheard of in many other vets around my area, I had called at 5pm and he told me to come in right away. Dr. Torres is always so kind and makes the extra effort to make my dogs feel comfortable during each visit, he even sits on the ground and pets them before beginning the examination. He goes above and beyond to make a it a great visit each time, it really puts me at ease to know my fur babies receive great care! This hospital has some bad reviews but that definitely is not my experience here, everyone is so kind all the vet techs are so hardworking and respectful, and the receptionists are very sweet. I've had the amazing opportunity to have my pets looked at by both Dr.Nolasco and Dr. Torres, they both are very considerate of my concerns as a dog parent, never dismissive and always ready to provide different options for the best care.I mostly appreciate how they don't push treatments that you can't afford, they let you know what may work best but ultimately they make it clear it is your decision.I am so grateful for the doctors and techs, my pup is back at 100% for the first time in a very long time. I cannot understand the negative reviews on this page. I have known office manager Diane Matthews and veterinarian Javier Nolasco, DVM about 18 to 20 years. I met both of them at another facility and followed them here to Van Nuys, which is a rather long drive for me. Why? Because I want the best for my dog! Dr. Nolasco has treated three of my dogs and he has always been perceptive, sympathetic, knowledegable and willing to listen to my concerns and issues. (Both financial and medical). One of my dogs is quite elderly and there is a thin line between spending a lot to treat every condition and just being able to keep my dog comfortable. Dr. Nolasco never shies away from talking about this and he is very attuned to my needs and my dog's needs. He has a wonderful, caring manner and that is reflected in the care he gives every animal. The staff is awesome too. They have an inviting telephone manner and the women at the reception desk are very kind. It's a simply decorated and comfortable building. I would rather have a vet and staff that are excellent than a fancy, elaborately adorned place with a substandard (or less) vet and staff. In my adult life, owning animals, Dr. Nolasco is the best vet I have ever encountered. read more

My puppy was nothing but an amazing little boy, he was playful and loved everyone and anyone around him. I got caught up in the mid COVID-19 up-sell. The front line staff was courteous enough but the billing increased a few times. I received a quote for a procedure and I rejected a few obvious add ons that weren't directly related to the procedure *vaccinations & dental work. Then after they adjusted the bill somehow it was bigger than the first quote by 29% I then discovered that they added another procedure that they 'forgot' ok fine, my backs against the wall here. Then on the day of the procedure they upped the price AGAIN because they weren't sure how much anesthesia my pooch needed and the price raised again another 44% of the new price. This establishment is the worst veterinarian I have ever been too. Not only are the prices are outrageous, the staff and vet are rude and very dismissive to their patients. I brought my dog in because he had a small ball one of his back legs, we thought it was tumor so we wanted to come get it checked. The tumor was small and we wanted to get ahead of it. The vet took a look at it, took some x-rays, and took a sample of the tumor and charged us $2,000. Keep in mind, this was just for the DIAGNOSIS, they had not done any real work on my pet yet. I wanted to have this tumor removed but they said the tests proved that the tumor was benign and they would not remove it. We asked if we could have it removed anyways because we wanted to be safe, they said it was not necessary and they gave us medication to ensure us that the tumor would not get any bigger. When I questioned the vet's decision he got angry and dismissed our concerns. We decide to just listen to the vet and give our dog the medication, and hope that it works. About three weeks go by and the medication does not work and the tumor becomes bigger. We decide that it is time to go to another vet. We wanted a copy of his diagnosis and x-rays from Valley Animal Hospital and they refused and TOOK forever to send them to us. The staff was very rude about providing this for us. Finally after we got his x-rays, the new vet informed us that we should have removed the tumor as soon as we could have. I informed him that Valley Animal Hospital said it was not necessary. The vet told me that Valley Animal Hospitals diagnosis was not correct. The new vet removed the tumor for us and did his best, but he said it was too far along that the tumor was too attached to his leg now. He informed us that the tumor was not benign like Valley Animal Hospital told us. It was in fact harming him. Once we had the tumor removed, he was doing better for a couple of weeks and then had a seizure one night. The tumor was too far along and had impacted our pet. I blame Valley Animal Hospital for his death, they were negligent in their first diagnosis and DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE PETS THEY SERVE. THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT MAKING PROFIT. They love to take advantage if it's your first time coming to the vet. I brought my dog in as she was having a skin reaction, the staff at first were very kind. They told me they had to do some testing and I agreed since I assumed that's what vets do, right? They take my dog to another room as I waited and a few minutes later they come back with an estimate. THEY WANTED TO CHARGE ME 500! I said to them I'm sorry I don't think I have money to pay for all that. And asked if I can not do some of the testing in the estimate. They said that's not possible because they did all the tests already. BUT HOW? It hasn't been more than 3 min. AND THEY WONT RELEASE THE DOG UNTIL YOU PAY IT ALL. I gave my sister a call and told her the situation. And she asked, did they present you the estimate while the dog was in the room before taking the dog away?!!! It was then I realized that they took advantage of me being a first time patient. I never done this before and told the staff that before all of this happened WHILE THEY WERE BEING NICE IN THE BEGINNING. My sister was on the phone with dr. Nolasco and was hoping to get a payment plan going since I didn't expect to pay more than 500 for a skin rash. HE TOLD MY SISTER ON THE PHONE... WHO COMES TO THE VET WITH NO MONEY! My sister paid over the phone in order to get our dog released! She called back to talk to the manager who clearly has had no professional managerial training. My sister asked for the dr. License number, THE MANAGER TOLD HER TO LOOK FOR IT HERSELF!!! To end this all my sister asked to cancel the results and get a refund. They canceled the test without giving the refund!! Until she has to call her bank and put a dispute and that's when they said that they tried contacting us back to give us the refund which they never did not even a voicemail!! Ohh yea I forgot to mention the receptionist needs to find another job. It's so clear you hate your job and bothered you so much that I asked you to not charge me for the flea shampoo that I never asked for. Like honey no one is forcing you to do that job. The one doctor they have now was soooooooooo rude to me yesterday 10/9, among other things (Dr. Javier Nolasco I am talking about you) he is the only doc available (And I here he owns the place now!), met with Diane Matthews (the Manager of the facility who was a dream)...even after coming back to voice my complaints he still never apologized and STILL treated me as if I was an irritation (cuz he had other clients waiting more important I guess) HE NEVER APOLOGIZED!!!! I've worked in customer service and customer care for over 30 years. I manage 6 bldgs that accept residents with pets.... Do you think I am going to recommend or refer VAH? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! My pet is like my child!! MY FUR BABY!!! And there is absolutely no trust. He was even dismissive on the day I came back to speak with Diane the facility manager. God bless her! VAH you are NOT the only option. BUYER BEWARE. Always check the rating. Prayers out to the pet owner that the review stated they misdiagnosed a tumor and died. I am leaving this review for the reference of others, so they don't have to go through what I did. I took my 2 month old puppy to this clinic to get checked up. Doctor Nolasco observed him literally for less then 5 minutes. He responded to our questions very fast and vaguely. During the exam, as a new pet owner, I asked if it's ok to let my puppy play in my backyard even though there are raccoons and squirrels around, and since we don't have any other pets, he said it should ok. Per the records of the puppy given to me by the previous owner, my puppy Teddy had been dewormed and been vaccines one round of parvo. I reported this to doctor Nolasco. He gave Teddy another deworming shot because he had worms, yet did not suggest anything about distemper. Through time, his worms and parasites disappeared due to treatment and since the Nolasco said it was ok to let him in the backyard, i let him play few times. Either as a result of the grass or environment he got skin infection called Pyoderma. He was given a shot against it and he slowly recovered. A week later his left side legs started to tremble and twitch, he was able to walk and sometimes times run but day by day it got worse and it was getting harder. He would cry at nights and feel down. I made appointments with a few vets, one of them who came to my house to exam him and take blood. A few vets assumed it looked neurological. After blood results came in, parvo came in negative while distemper came in positive! With puppies, distemper spreads and advances in a short time and becomes neurological. This is all because no one told me about this virus, but the vet, Dr. Nolasco who would rush through his exam to make his money, did not. Even worse, he put down in his records that he got a combo of parvo/ distemper. There are combo shots and separate. Since he was in such a hurry, he assumed and didn't even take a minute to confirm or clarify even after I told him "1 round of parvo shot". After his results came in positive for distemper he was already unable to stand and unfortunately not to have him struggle or decease, or live like that, I had to make the toughest decision to euthanize him. He was only 3 months and 3 weeks old and all he wanted to do was play and prob had to idea what was coming to him. But cold hearted money making machines like doctor Nolasco or their facility, don't care. Who knows how many pets have died because of their ignorance. He was very arrogant and ignorant and that cost the life of a Maltipoo puppy. I highly advise not to take your pet there so they your pet does not fall into that situation. I've seen a lot of negative reviews on Yelp for this facility, but I can't understand why. I have been bringing my dogs here since 2017, and I've always had as good of an experience as possible. I have been to other Vets in the Studio City / North Hollywood area, and they have always been way overpriced for the service they provide. It's also worth noting that the staff at these other facilities are not anymore friendly than the ones at VAH. Just yesterday, Sept. 3, 2021, I had to take my boy into VAH because he had dramatically lost weight and stopped eating. I saw this coming the months prior, and knew he wouldn't last through 2021. He is a 13 year old PitBull named Max who was the sweetest big baby I have ever known. I had an appointment for Sept. 4th, but when I called and told the staff that Max was no longer eating or drinking, they got me in first thing in the morning on the 3rd. Dr. Torres saw how bad Max's condition had gotten, and how much weight he had lost since his last visit four months earlier. Max was in really bad shape and it happened so so quickly. He was shaking so badly the night before the visit, and it continued into the visit. Dr. Torres examined him, and was extremely concerned. He was also extremely sensitive to the condition my wife and I were in. After examining Max, he sincerely advised us that he could run a series of diagnostics, blood work, x-rays, and hospitalize Max for approximately 3 days. He said we would be able to identify the problem, but at Max's age and his condition this wouldn't really help him. He told us he would understand if we wanted to help Max transition and end his suffering. He gave us an estimate of the costs to treat Max vs. the cost to help him transition, and the treatment was three times the cost to help Max pass. What I loved about how he treated us is he didn't try and push the big dollar treatment on us; he actually did the opposite. We weren't ready for this, and explained we wanted to bring Max home to say goodbye to our kids. We asked if he would give Max something for the pain and allow us to go home so the kids could spend time with him and say goodbye. He gave Max some pain meds and fluids at a reasonable cost. It gave Max a second wind. He seemed to feel great, but Dr. Torres said it's only temporary. He explained it will wear off and Max will go back to being in pain in several hours. My wife asked if we could keep him overnight, and Dr. Torres said, " I would not recommend that because he will be suffering even more than the night before. I'm thinking about Max here more than you guys." He said we could come back later today and he would assist with the transition. We went home, Max actually ate and drank some water. When the kids got home we all took Max for his last walk which wasn't very far for him. Then we gathered at home to just love him. About four hours later, Max started shaking again. He know longer wanted the chicken we had made for him, and he wouldn't drink or eat anything. We headed back to Valley Animal Hospital with my teenage kids, and Dr. Torres actually sat them down and explained why we had to do this. He helped them realize that nothing he could do would help Max get better. If he ran all the tests and just proved that Max had cancer, Max was too old and may not survive the surgery, or may pass shortly after surgery. Once they understood, he left us to say our goodbyes to Max, and then when the family left, I stayed with my boy. Dr. Torres came back into the room, and softly pet Max, and talked to him while he injected him. Max went quietly and gently. He did not suffer. Dr. Torres then allowed me to stay in the room for a while and explained they would take good and respectful care of Max. He sincerely said he was sorry we had to do this, but it was best for Max. He also told us that he has turned away people who have brought dogs into the hospital to euthanize them when it wasn't necessary. He then shook my hand and said sorry for my loss. The point of this long review is to say, I have never had any bad experiences with this facility and their staff. They have always treat me and my pets with the outmost care and respect. Put my dog down here a month and a half ago ... I wouldn't recommend , they over charge and the two ladies in the front could care less about you or your dog . I came here because it was the soonest appointment I could get and I couldn't stand my dog suffer any longer . Call in to ask for an appointment for my dog, my dog has been hurt in her tail so I'm really looking for a place where they can treat her tail. Call in to this place, the guy who answer me told me to hold. I waited for 5 minutes which it's not a lot but once he answer I told him if I could take my dog as an emergency the guy didn't even said a single word and hung up, call in again same guy answer this time he told me the same to hold than he proceeded to hang up again, I called for the third time he didn't even bother to answer the phone. like really that's not good service at all. I just want to say thank you to the doctor who turned down doing my dogs surgery just because he had 1 hour left to close. Mind you the surgery he said was 30-45 mins long but because he was closing in 1 hour he didnt do the surgery. When I asked him if my dog would make it until tomorrow for him to do the surgery he said every hour I am risking it. Like really doc that's why you are a vet to send dogs home to die when you know you can help? I understand being tired and wanting to go home I have a job too and at times I feel the same way but work is work and sometimes shit runs longer. Just because we close at 4 does not mean I'm not going to help out a person if they come in right at 4. Called multiple hospitals the surgery she needed was $3,500. $9,000. $10,000. While I was at the front one male nurse comes and ask any luck with the hospitals I said no and he just gave a face of oh well and proceeded to charge us $200 for the visit to send us home to watch our dog die.. well I was not going to let her die , I found an amazing amazing doctor who saved her life , she will have 1 week tomorrow recovering from her surgery alive and well and happy.
