I've been with Valley First Credit Union (formerly Stanislaus County Credit Union) for 30 years. They've always released funds the day before, and it shows as pending a day earlier. But on the 1st of this month, they decided to hold it until the 2nd. Sure, it's their right, but it's also outright wrong. My usual payments that have been on autopilot for years were rejected as NSF because my deposit was just sitting there, pending. This change was made without any warning. **DO NOT OPEN AN ACCOUNT with this institution!** It's the worst bank by far. I'm in the process of moving all my accounts away from them. I recently was put into a situation that left me out of town, out of gas and out of money, with my bank account virtually empty. After attempting to contact a couple of friends to see if I could borrow 10.00 for gas to get home and having no luck, I figured I'd call the 800 Member Services number at Valley First Credit Union where I bank and see if I could get the 10.00 transfered from my savings to my checking. Nikki was given the job of helping me, and as things turned out I am very glad it was Nikki. After informing me that I didn't have enough in my savings at the time to transfer 10.00, Nikki put me on hold to see if there was something she could do to get some gas money to me. Not only was she able to get money into my checking account for gas to get me back home, she informed me that I could get a Quick Loan which would allow me to fill my gas tank and give me funds to tide me over until the first of the month when I receive my retirement. Thank you Nikki! As I told you that day, you are a life saver. This review is strictly about this location, as I have been satisfied with this credit union for the most part for years. This was my first time at this branch. My experience here today was by far the most impersonal experience I can remember having at any business. You walk in and see someone standing there somewhat reminiscent of a Wal-Mart greeter. You can't see any tellers until you walk into one of the "stalls" and then you can see a teller on a monitor. You pickup an old school phone receiver to communicate with the teller while looking into the monitor. I realize the need for security at a bank/credit union, however this to me just impersonal and poor customer service. It actually made me feel like I criminal. The whole transaction felt akin to visiting someone in jail. I don't know if this type of video monitor banking is employed at a lot of banks. I personally have been with the same four or five banking institutions for years. So I may have a somewhat sheltered view, but this was a first for me. read more

I wish that I could give. Negative Five rating. In all honesty can not recommend Valley First Credit Union they have what it means to provide customer service. The main branch on J Street had to wait for an hour to be told that my card was suspend due to activity in November that may have been fraudulent? A bank or credit card would have contacted us to verify. So I would need a new card but oh yeah the customer service rep said happily that there card machine was down and needed to go another branch. Surprise got to dale road and another half hour wait. Still waiting. I take pity in the customers that come here why you will go up to a window and pickup a phone and talk to someone in the call center no real human contact. Safety and security is one thing but saving a buck and not hitting appropriately is a sign that we should just move our accounts to another credit union read more

Nothing is easy at Valley First. For years, every time we would leave town, whether over the holidays or on vacation, our ATM cards would not work. We started calling ahead so they could put a travel alert on our account, letting them know our itinerary so we could use our ATM cards to fuel the car and have ready access to cash (heaven help you if you deviate from your itinerary ten miles to Laughlin, Nevada for lunch and to play the slots on your way from California to Arizona). But even then, giving advance notice doesn't always work (and it can be difficult reaching anyone from the road on a weekend or after banking hours, though with persistence it can be done). And now, when I call, if I have ready answers (or worse yet, anticipate the questions) to the security questions, I am asked ever more arcane questions (just now, after supplying my mother's maiden name and at which branch I first opened an account with them, which should have sufficed, I was then asked the last time I made a direct deposit - had to get up and go to the calendar for that and count backwards to determine what day that was; then I was asked when and where I had last used my ATM card, which I don't use very often, so again had to go to calendar and backtrack to figure that out. Both answers were correct, but then I was asked when I last logged in to my online account, which I only check a couple times a year - so to answer that question correctly, I needed to log-in to my laptop, then log-in to my bank account and retrieve my password, enter the password, then select how I wanted to receive a one-time security code, then answer my other phone, hear the secure code, and enter that - all while the call center rep was still on the line hearing me jump through these hoops - just so I could tell him the last time I logged in was ten seconds ago!!!) Twenty minutes and a lot of work just to confirm my account is mine! It would have been easier to drive to the bank, except then I'd be standing in line and dealing with an in-the-flesh version of the same weirdness. I have to assume Valley First has suffered losses from some major security breaches of late - until recently I only had to answer one or two questions that no one else would know. Ask them the time at Valley First, and you will be guided through all the steps necessary to build your own clock. If you value your time and good customer service, do not bank here. We will need to keep a small account open (considering we went through Valley First nine years ago when buying our house, so our loan is through them), but on our return we plan to move most of our accounts to another banking facility for peace of mind. read more

Ive always bank at a credit union because they are less of a hassel as when you are trying to open an account and you can use your atm at alot of atm machines without getting charged a fee. This location is different than the other ones due to the location. It has tv monitors where you can see the teller behind the screen, at the same time you are talking to them on a telephone. Thats pretty interesting. Ive never seen that before. But only reason for this is because of the location and that fact of the crime that happens in that area. Its a very small bank. But it is located by the mall which can become handy if you are ever heading to the mall and need quick cash for whatever reason instead of pulling from the atms in the mall. Its always busy and not all tellers station is open. So sometimes you have to wait a long time. Overall I really didnt have any bad experiences with this bank other than the wait time. read more

The few times I have been inside the employees have always been very nice I do feel that by having the tellers on the other side of the wall it does make it very awkward but then again it is for a reason. This past year the "Member Services" consultant who set up my IRA made a mistake by applying it to the wrong year. I know mistakes are made, but my issue with them is that after months of phone calls, emails, and visits to the branch this issue is not only still not resolved... No one seems to have the professional aptitude or courtesy to even want to fix it. (I should add that the mistake was caught early, but now months have passed). I'm at the point now of filing a formal complaint but again, no one seems to know (or rather, no one will tell me) who to go to. I had to stop at this valley first atm, as the valley first atm In Ceres is literally NEVER working. So, got my money all set to put in my account to pay my rent. The atm takes my 600$ and spits out a note saying, "unable to process". What if this was literally my last day to pay my rent and I was kicked out on the street? I've had an auto loan with VFCU for a few years now so when I bought a new car I wasn't really concerned about using them again. I set up the auto payment with my other instruction and checked each month to be sure the payments went to them. They did. About two weeks after my second payment went through a tow truck showed up to my house at 3am to repo my car. I was confused and showed the driver my payments from my bank account on my phone. Of course he couldn't do anything about it and he towed my car. I was forced to take a day off work, as was my daughter, who's now driving my old car, to go down and get my car back. After speaking with the bank they discovered my payment was put on the WRONG LOAN...TWO payments were showing each month on my OLD car loan. They insisted I was in the wrong because I didn't answer their calls. Well, I've since discovered that when they call me my phone shows "Scam Likely" and they don't leave a message! Of course I don't answer Scam calls!!! So it cost me a $15 fee at PD to get a release form, $150 at the tow truck place, and I was charged a $375 repossession fee by VFCU!! That's over $500. VFCU insisted that this was all MY fault and that I'd put the wrong account number on my auto payment...even though THEY'RE the ones that gave me the account number in the first place when I set up the payment. I went in and deleted all future payments on that car and entered a whole new payment putting the correct account number and car description in the Payment Description line. Low and behold I call VFCU AGAIN after the third payment goes through and they STILL have it going to the wrong loan!!! I spent two days on the phone with 6 different people, none of whom can fix ANYTHING!! I requested that they credit me for the amount I had to pay to get my car back and they say they "don't know if they can do that!" I am beyond pissed at this point, the problem is still not fixed, they have my money, the proper loan isn't credited, and who knows when they'll show up to try to repossess my car again! To top it off, after being inconvenienced beyond belief paying all these fees my credit that I've worked my butt off to get into the mid-700's may be affected by their stupidity!!! VFCU customer care is the worst I've ever seen!!! I'm probably going to just take out a loan with my other institution and NEVER use or refer anyone to VFCU again!!!! Opened two savings and a checking account after Citibank closed locally. Everyone was helpful at the Ceres branch. Last month we went in to deposit our rolled coins. We were informed they don't take rolled coins and to use the coin counter machine. AND that they CHARGE us to use the machine to deposit money into our account at THEIR bank. WHAT!!! Talked with the branch manager who said that was their policy and she had no power to do anything about it. I advised I would move my mid-5 figure savings account if they didn't waive the fees. She said she couldn't. I moved my account simply because of the principle of charging me to deposit money into their facility and that the branch manager has no authority nor do they seem to care. read more

I was recently placed with this company for my new car loan. It has been nothing short of horrendous in only the first month of servicing my account. 1. I never received my first bill. I get a collections phone call wondering why. I explain that I never received a bill yet and that last I talked to my sales associate (the finance guy) for the car they had not placed me with a particular credit union yet so I was not even aware of who had my loan and have been waiting for the paperwork to no avail. After talking with the lady on the phone we came to realize that in regards to my address they were given the wrong city by the dealer. So more than likely paperwork was sent out but I never received it because it went to an address that doesn't exist. Nice! Well the lady said she would mark the account so that it was not in arrears and give me an opportunity to pay the overdue payment and the current due (which is not cool, but has to be done I understand). 2. I ask how do I pay? Where do I pay, etc? Since I have no documentation, amount, loan number, etc. -- All I get is you have to drive to Modesto or Tracy (towns that are 30-45 min from my home) and bring them a check and write down this number on it...she gave me an account number. I am not comfortable with this this at all without some type of statement included, but I do realize it needs to be paid asap so I am agreeable for now. 3. I then ask for her to resend whatever paperwork that was sent to the wrong address, as well as update the wrong information so that I receive the next set of documents. She says "yes I can resend it, but I can't until I transfer you to member services for them to change the information. I cannot do that here". So I say ok please do that! 4. I wait on hold for over 25 minutes for a member services to answer. I explain what happened. She has me verify my identity with my social security number and name. I do that. She puts me on hold. Comes back...I need more verification...what is your payment amount? Also a couple of other questions specific to my loan. Ummmmm hello I don't know that's why I'm calling to get all this information so I can make a damn payment and receive my documents that have this information on it. Well sorry she says "we can't help you, you need to come to Modesto or Tracy in person to do this. Anything else I can help you with?" I am livid at this point. So needless to say I now must commute 30+ min away and rearrange my day to go hunt down my loan amounts, documents, and change my address all because of incompetent individuals, horrible customer service, and retarded business practices. I am stuck with this place for 5 years, it is going to be a long 5 years obviously. DO NOT get a loan from here if you don't have to!!!! The customer does not come first. read more

Went to deposit my paycheck and guess what? Both ATMs were Out of Order AND they were closed. Now, I am perfectly fine with them being closed on the 26th, because Christmas fell on a Sunday this year. What I find ridiculous is that BOTH of the ATMs were not working. Thankfully, I had some cash on me, but what about the half a dozen people that showed up to those ATMs within that two-minute time span when I drove by and saw the machines weren't working? This is not the first time their customers have been abandoned and their ATMs were non-operational. It is frustrating enough to have only one ATM accepting check deposits, but to have both of them not working after a holiday weekend? Bills still needed to get paid. Groceries still needed to be bought. This branch needs to get their act together and fix those machines, so that they work consistently.
