This particular occurrence was by happenstance or divine intervention (you decide) because I didn't even know something was wrong with my car. Dave happened to pass by me outside a lovely eating establishment in Provo while my car was still running and I was standing by it. He kindly mentioned that he noticed my valves needed loosening. Obviously I knew exactly what he meant (no, I knew nothing of what he meant!) but he offered to look at my car for free at his shop just down the street. After taking advantage of the free service, my car indeed needed a fix including the timing belt that was on it's last string. I feel like it was a blessing in disguise that he stopped me that day or the fix my car needed could've been much worse. Long story short, he took the car for 3 days, fixed all my issues, charged me a fair price, and even lent me a loaner car for free while it was in the shop. I've always feel like I am treated well here and I trust the knowledge of the mechanics.

I had a very disappointing experience with Main Street Mechanics…read more I called asking if they could provide me with a copy of a pre-purchase inspection that had recently been performed on the exact Toyota Highlander I was planning to buy. The manager I spoke with on Monday morning told me that "the law states" they could not provide me with the inspection and that I would have to pay another $360 for a completely new pre-purchase inspection. After looking into it further, I found that this was at best a misleading explanation. If the shop has a policy not to release inspection reports to anyone other than the original customer, that's understandable--but saying "the law" requires a new inspection is very different. I felt like I was being pressured to spend another $360 unnecessarily. On top of that, the manager was rude from the very beginning of the phone call. Customer service matters, especially when someone is trying to make an informed purchase on a vehicle. I hope the business is more transparent with future customers about its policies and treats people with more respect. You asked us to look over the truck for any issues. We did a full and thorough inspection and went over each item we found by severity. We have no $90 jump fee so I'm not sure what you are referring to. We have a diagnostic fee to determine the issue the vehicle was having which is $90, to go through the test procedures and get you the answers you needed. You had several things we brought to your attention including differentials that had excessive pinion bearing play and needed to be rebuilt. My staff informed you, due to the excessive play in the gear boxes and the driveline moving around that it eventually could become a safety issue. I'm not sure to what standard that you fill like you were being overcharged but we are well under national average for automotive repair cost. Your friend I'm sure is able to get you a better price and wewould encourage you to save money where you can but we have overhead and labor expenses we have to cover with the repair cost, while still trying to make a profit. We are happy to have you come back in and we can go over the inspection report with you and actually show you what we found on your truck with it lifted in the air. The last thing we want is for you to feel we made recommendations on your vehicle that it didn't need, so the best way to resolve that would be to show you what we are talking about. The real issue is that your team attempted to charge me nearly $7,000 for repairs that multiple independent mechanics have since confirmed are completely unnecessary. That is inexcusable. It's not just a mistake, it's taking advantage of people who may not have the knowledge or resources to question your recommendations. I've since had my vehicle evaluated by several trusted mechanics, and they were all shocked and upset by the quote you provided. They confirmed that the work you recommended was not needed. Frankly, it seems like your shop has grown complacent and overconfident due to the lack of competition in the area.
