I have been taking my golden retrievers to Valley Vet for 13 years and referring countless other friends who have also taken their animals there for more than 10 years but last Friday I was appalled how I was treated. I came home to find my Guinea Pig barely breathing but still alive and moving around and making her sweet squeaky noises in my ear. There was no way I was going to allow her to suffer for another minute so I called my friends at Valley Vet with no doubt they would take care of me and my little Abby. I called to hear a friendly voice and I explained the situation and that I would like to bring her in and put her to rest. I was told to hold so they could pull my charts. I was told they could not help me. The disbelief and pain I felt in that moment was a likened to being stabbed in the heart. WE CAN'T HELP YOU???? I found a loving caring vet that welcomed me and Abby and humanely took care of her for $50. I will NEVER return to Valley Vet and will tell all the hundreds of friends who have pets in Simi Valley to do the same. I have been coming here for many many years, and this past weekend I had to put my beloved little boy "Bear" down at the age of 14. Dr. Lori Prater assured me that I was making the right decision, and as hard as it was, she managed to take some of the pain away. She is AMAZING with your doggies and treats them like they are her own. I have never met such a compassionate understanding doctor as she, and the staff is very kind too. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is an animal lover, as all the doctors here are very kind. We started going to this vet for our Two pugs about 6 years ago. They did a good job an helped Fred our male pug during a stomach problem in which we happily paid a over $1000. Our dogs are older now on on two occasions in the past 6 months we have been very dissatisfied with the service. Our female was having multiple seizures one day so we brought her in on an emergency visit. They told us she looked fine and if we wanted to schedule an appointment they could see her the next day. needless to say we were very worried about her so we took her to another vet. Recently our Male pug has been diagnosed with cancer by the "other " vet the only food he will eat is a prescription food. the other Vet is a bit of a drive so we thought we could get it locally. They refused to sell it to us even if our vet called it in. very disappointed. read more

Today I brought in 11 kittens in to Valley Vet Clinic in Simi Valley and cannot tell you how wonderful the staff is. I have never had such warm, caring interaction with busy vet staff before. I highly recommend them and driving a distance to find excellent service is worth it. I work with a rescue and this is where we take our kittens. Started going there because of the reviews from yelp and because it's 5 min from my home. I have to say that I really like the staff there. They are all very nice. The prices are reasonable, i think. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the first 2 times we went, we were scheduled w/ vets who were "floaters", for lack of better words. So when I called wanting to speak to them about our dog, i was told the Dr would not be back until next month. That happened twice, and being new to that clinic, i was annoyed and bothered by that. Other than that, everyone is great and the hours are perfect! Open on Saturdays and stay open late on some days during the week. read more

Looking for a new vet and a family member recommended Valley Vet Clinic. They have been in Simi for a long time. Small clinic. My other clinic sold to a large corporation and their vets and staff have changed a number of times and always put me on hold for 10 mins or longer. Valley Vet had me on hold but only a couple of mins. They was able to get me in on a Monday. The doctor was nice and thorough with the exam. First of all he's Just about the kindest man I have ever met, second he treats dogs like people, they are that important to him. BJ does not have epilepsy he's definitely vaccine injured from the shot he received in either 2015 or 2018 that contained: **Thimerosal is approximately 50% mercury (Hg) by weight. Well that's really stupid because they make vaccines without it now so what idiot decided to give my dog that shot... Well it's a vaccine clinic that I will never go to again! So forget about saving the money at a clinic that gives out old shots because you will pay in the rears for the vet medical Bills To fix What that crap does to your poor fur babies little brains. I will in the future always take my dogs to Dr. Novy because it's not about money to him it's about the dogs health and the tears in your eyes. The vaccines he gives Don't contain Thiomersal & he doesn't over vaccinate. OK I said my peace! read more

Just got off the phone with Mindy...I must say I'm a little taken aback by the way I was dealt with. After trying to get records for a cat I rescued who we figured out had been to that clinic as a kitten, Mindy refused to even let me know anything unless the original owner was there. Does the word rescue not mean anything to you? I obviously don't know the original owner. I'm trying to take care of this cat and I can't even get a vaccine history or a birthdate. Further, it took about 9 minutes on hold to find this out. Lastly, as a first time patient and someone trying to understand my cats past, I'm surprised at the level of customer service I received. Constant interrupting from mindy as I was explaining things or asking questions, much of which the only answer I received was "sorry the owner and manager said no"...also just an over all anxious and rude demeanor over the phone that made me feel unwelcomed, maybe because I wasn't making an appointment (aka bringing any money). Can't comment on anything other than this, but as someone who has worked in healthcare (not veterinary) that's always a tell tale sign of the quality and care within. This place seems like they only care for the patients who are currently paying them and don't care as much for previous patients or just animal care in general, otherwise I think giving a new owner some info about a cat should be justified, especially when you have the file right there. The only redeeming grace is their holding music. I actually sang along to 3 songs during my 9 minute hold. read more

We have been going to Valley Vet for over a decade. They have always taken good, compassionate care of our two poodles. Dr. Novy took all the time we needed and always suggested things to improve the quality of life for our two pets. This week, our 17-year-old poodle Brandy, began going downhill fast. Dr. Beth Young did several diagnostic tests and X-rays and these convinced us that her time had come. Dr. Young took all the time we needed to say goodbye to her and then gently and painlessly eased Brandy over the Rainbow Bridge. They even allowed our other dog to be with us. She lent us some books to read to ease our family's grief. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Young, she's wonderful. read more

I used to really like this vet, until COVID hit. Now you still can't go in with your fur baby to see what's going on, their site says one can but if you try, they make you feel about an inch high. Also they were never about the almighty dollar, that has also changed, you can't get a script from anyone but them ( they don't trust a company whos been around forever, but we are supposed to trust them???) What happened to freedom of choice and getting the best care for you fur baby? Well, if you pay them triple for meds doesn't leave much to give in other areas. We've been Valley Vet clients for over 20 years and wouldn't consider going anywhere else. The doctors AND staff have never been anything but friendly, caring and great to us and our pets. I saw a review on here about the wait time on hold - um, this office is busy! There's a reason for that, they're terrific. They get lots of calls. And they've handled Covid beautifully - we got a new puppy in the midst of all this and have had several appointments for puppy shots and rescue-pup conditions to treat - everyone has been efficient and safe and as always, I'm completely happy with their care. read more

This is the only Vet office I will take my dog to. Not only is the staff super friendly and accommodating, but they have this way of making you feel like family. I have always been taken care of at Valley Vet and I've been going there for the last 10 years. Originally we saw Dr. Prater, but she moved and now we see Dr. Spitzer. The office girls are absolutely amazing, too. The service and support they provide is outstanding and really hard to find at other Vet offices as busy as this one. With that said, even though they are busy, they have always been able to squeeze me in and make appointments work with my hectic schedule. I have also never felt like I was upsold on anything or taken advantage of, they only charge me for what is required and that really goes a long way and helps to build trust between the office and their patients/clients. Honest and caring vets and staff. When I call they usually ask how one or more of my dogs is doing by name. They are experienced and don't do unnecessary procedures. The receptionist told me to call back in the fall when they are not so busy. Rude and inconsiderate with no suggestions on any alternatives either. We brought our dog in for an evaluation. Spent over $400 for diagnosis. After,it was recommended they perform surgery for another $3400. It was recommended the dog be to sleep because the dog would only live another 6 months to 1 year. We skipped the appointment to have the dog put to sleep, but instead got a second opinion. The same surgery was done for $2300 dollars less elsewhere, and our dog is doing wonderful. The loss of our family dog would have been devastating to our family had we kept our appointment. I finally took my dog here and from the moment I walked in I knew that they were going to do what it took to figure it out. when the vet came in she immediately dropped to the floor and greeted my dog first and I knew I had picked the perfect vet. Love Valley Vet, I've brought a lot of beloved pets here over the years and have always received attentive, devoting care for each and every one of them. I even had to call in after I found out my dog had a brain tumor, and I'll never forget the woman at the front desk who sat on the phone with me as I started to cry. She took the time to comfort me and tell me that whatever would make my dog more comfortable, they would do for him and she was actually one of the very few who helped me accept what was going on during that time. A lot of respect goes out to this little veterinary clinic off Los Angeles Avenue, they deserve it and really are a group of caring, hardworking people devoted to helping animals live happy and healthy lives. I would give this place no stars if I could. My baby chihuahua is 10 weeks old and he contracted parvo. I rushed him here from the emergency clinic in Thousand Oaks because it was more cost effective. They ended up putting him in like a laundry room pantry outside. I kept coming to visit and he looked worse and worse. We asked the doctor many questions all of which were responded with I don't know or I can't answer that. My favorite was when I asked if they had taken his temperature because the night before at the emergency clinic it was below normal and the doctors response was " why would we? His insides are like ground up beef" excuse me? But how would you know what my dog needs if you are just going to leave him in a pantry hooked up to the iv we provided and leave him there to die. No tests were run, no temp taken. NOTHING. I ended up paying 800 for a day an a half of them doing nothing and decided it was best to take him back to the emergency clinic. It may be more costly but let me tell you. You definitely get what you pay for. I will never come here again. I strongly urge anyone who has a puppy with parvo to not come here. They will just pretty much leave them there to die. read more

The only reason I am giving a one star is for the office staff they are really great. As for Dr.Novy I can't even believe his actions. I brought my Dane/Lab mix in for his ears being infected. When I called to make the appointment I did let them know that he is very strong and would not let anyone look in his ears. They took me into the exam room Dr. Novy came in he seemed very nice at first and he explain the he was going to have his two tech people come into the exam room and clean them there so I could help hold my dog . My dog was crazy jerking and pulling trying to get away , I did put a muzzle on him and after a couple of minutes of trying to hold him still he had pulled off the muzzle, I had noticed his tongue was purple and blue so I said "do you think we should wait a minute because his tongue is purple. He stopped got up handed me the leash and told me he will not treat my dog and for me to leave! I then was so dumbfounded I said what? He said he was dangerous and did not want him or his staff to get hurt. At that point my dog did not growl or show his teeth at all !! I am pretty sure their are way worse dogs than mine. So I went straight to park hospital and told them what had happen took my dog gave him a sedative and treated him. Why Dr. Novy couldn't do that is beyond me. Sorry so long. read more

This review is long overdue, but I wanted to share our experience with Valley Vet Clinic because it has been extensive and positive. It began in December, 2011, one of our Yorkie Terriers, Maui, needed surgery on her back legs. Our physician was Dr. Gonzales, who gave my wife and I a clear diagnosis, and then when we agreed to move forward with the hospital, she made all the arrangements for a surgeon to perform the operation that Maui needed. The estimated costs for the entire procedure was lower than any of the other places we checked out here in the San Fernando Valley. The surgery was a success, and our Maui was running around again within weeks of her surgery. Not too long afterwards, our other Yorkie, Buddha, ended up with the same knee problems as Maui and he needed surgery as well (consider this a warning for all you people out there who plan on owning a Yorkie Terrier -- the breed has congenital issues with their knees!). But before we could have the surgery done on his knees, Dr. Gonzales needed to extract several of Buddha's teeth because they could have caused an issue during his knee surgery (consider this your second warning for all you people out there who plan on owning a Yorkie Terrier -- the breed is like many British people, they have congenital issues with their teeth!). Again, there was an accurate estimate for the final costs of the surgery, and a wonderful outcome - Dr. Gonzales was able to perform a lengthy surgery and remove all of my baby dog's bad teeth and Buddha was eating solid food a week later. A few months later, Buddha had the surgery on his legs and, like Maui, was up and running around in a few weeks. Two dogs... Three surgeries... a lot of visits for checkups.... Follow ups... and three overnight stays... My wife and I, and our dogs no doubt got the full "Valley Vet" experience... And we couldn't be happier! We totally recommend their care to your loved ones with four legs. From our first visit to our last, the staff was courteous and professional. The medical staff was experienced and... always right about everything they recommended. And the financial part of our interaction was handled with accurate estimates that each time beat any of the other vet clinics or hospitals we compared (which we did for all three surgeries... Look, I live in Encino, and each time was looking for an excuse to skip having to drive out to Simi Valley) Okay, so that was our experience. If you doubt the authenticity of this review, just wait because I will probably be writing again soon... Yeah, that's right, we have a third Yorkie (his name is "Kiki"), and it looks like his back legs are starting to bother him... and his teeth. read more

The staff at Valley Vet has provided care for my 7 year old Boxer, Champ since he was a puppy. They've always been pleasant and supportive.... Two weeks ago our cat Max suddenly became gravely ill. Dr. Prater & the rest of the staff was very caring & tried very hard to save our beloved boy. Unfortunately, there was nothing left to do & there was no other choice but to put him down. Our lab-mix had a growth on his right paw. Dr. Ron's quoted $3800 to remove it and "necessary" testing. Our dog is 14 years old and we didn't want him rebuilt, just comfortable for his last couple years. Valley Vet did the procedure at less than half the cost and our "Shady" is doing great!! Dr Gonzales at Valley Vet is one of the best vets I've ever found. She listens to the owners and works with them to help the best she can. I brought my elderly diabetic cat in and explained I could see that she was declining but that at her age I couldn't rationalize the cost of insulin, blood tests and needles. With no judgment or guilt, she talked about the various options and I had offered to check to see if she had any insulin given by other patients that she could gift to me. In short, she did everything she could to help us and Smokey (with a new lease on life) and I really appreciate it! read more

I have been coming her for years. Close to home. But it now has all changed. They do not care about your pet. I went last week as my dog has a loose dangling tooth. Happily paid the accessment charge. The vet gave me pain meds and antibiotics. However they gave my 6lb dog double the pain medication than what my dog can handle. This caused my dog to have an opioid overdose. Which i rushed her back as she was drooling and no longer could walk. She was excessively panting and rocking her little body back and forth. It was obvious she was in distress. I happened to be at the vet discussing an appointment for my dog for tooth extraction which they still had not given me an appointment when i was there the day before. My hub called me and said dog was in distress so i told them. They said bring her in now. As i was running to my car crying an office person came running after me saying there would be an 98 dollar emergency charge. Wth are you kidding me! At that point I didnt care i just had to get my dog help. I rush back crying hysterically and when i brought her back they casually asked who i was. Are you kidding me? I live a block away. I was back in there office in 4 mins. They told me to calm down as my dog was not dying. Until finally a nurse came out and looked at her and grabbed her from my arms and said sorry ill be back but the doctor needs to access her. Stay here. Finally after a half an hour dr comes to me with out my dog and says she had an opioid overdose. Im like how is that possible? They gave me prefilled syringes of the pain killer. My dog couldnt even take all of it. They had to use doggie Narcan to reverse the effects. They never said sorry . They charged me for the emergency. They charged for the narcan. Original vet said my dog could not be put under as she has a heart murmur. 3 stage. The nurses said dog has to be put under. I was stressed. They did call the next day to see how my dog was doing. Which by the way she was high for 10 hours. She couldnt blink. She didnt drink or eat. It was terrifying.so needless to say voiced my complaints. They offered a vet with more experience. I said okay. Made an appointment for me 3 days after the overdose. They gave me a complimetary visit. This vet said yes i see her tooth. She wanted to do another blood test as her sugar was high . But they said it could be from the reversatol drug from the overdose. Okay so why did you make me do a blood test after trying to save her life for an extraction. Actually why a blood test to remove her dangling tooth? If the test would come back incorrect from the drug you gave her why do the test? Money obviously. Then they gave me an new estimate for the tooth. 671. But thats a deal for dental month. I have already paid 350.00 and so far my dog almost died they want to do another blood test and still the tooth is dangling. First vet said not safe to put her under. 2nd vet said her heart murmur had improved to a 2 now. She said probably from the antibiotics. Not true because my dog couldnt swallow the antibiotics. I told the vet at the beginning that my dog was not able to get the antibiotics down. She must have forgotten that convo. I asked about the new pain meds that they said she would need after the surgery. She said oh dont worry we wont give you the same one. Your right I wont worry because I will be going to another Vet. Oh and they wanted to give her a pain block every 15 mins. For 32.50 and they said they needed a min of 45 mins. I wish i could take a picture of my dogs tooth. It is dangling. It pretty much out. I think the worse part was how little they cared. Oh they talk cute to your dog but they do that to all the dogs there. I am using the Simi valley community forum to find my next vet. I am just thankful that my dog survived there incompetence. There was no reason to overdose my dog. They knew her weight. But comeon at least say your sorry. Something. Waive the emergency fee. We just had to put our first family dog down due to Lymphoma. It was the hardest thing to do but Dr. Prater and the rest of the staff were amazing. The staff in front played with our two small children while my husband and I said goodbye to our amazing German Shepherd Zayla. They gave us as much time as we needed and were just amazing all around. We went in last minute on a Saturday as she took a turn for the worse. I've been going to Valley Vet for years and though all of the Veterinarians on site are knowledgeable in caring for our four legged friends Dr. Spitzer is hands down the most compassionate Veterinarian I have ever met. She has a real genuine way of caring for your pet. Most of all, if needed, she will explain in detail what is wrong with your pet and walk you through how to care for your animal going forward. I never feel rushed and always feel that all of my questions are answered. The one downside is Dr. Spitzer only works a few days a week, but she is most definitely well worth the wait. I can't say enough great things about Dr. Spitzer. I absolutely love her and the way she cares for all of my animals. read more

Love is an understatement for how I feel about Valley Vet. I came in with my 120 pound boxer mix that has serious hip and knee joint issues. I was expecting them to tell me he needed surgery and tests and x-rays. Well they did tell me they wanted to do blood work and x-rays but they also didn't pressure me. They understood that I simply couldn't afford to do it, not because I don't live my pet, but because I'm a single mom with only one income. They put my guy on a pain regiment and when that wasn't good enough they switched it up. He's not 100% but he's doing a lot better than I thought he would be. I was expecting him to be put down, instead I'm working with Valley Vet to keep his quality of life as great as possible until it's really his time.
