We loved playing on the playground located on the park too. The only downside of the playground is that it's sandy, which can get a little messy, but our boys loved playing in the sand! Outside of the playground, the park is made up of large green fields to explore and run around. We wandered all around until we found a set of stairs leading down to the lake and takes you right to the beach. The path was so pretty! The lakefront in Chicago is always so busy, it was nice to be right along the water and it be so quiet. Doc Park is a gem!

Queue my regular visits to Doctors now that spring has sprung! We live nearby so it's the perfect…read morespot for me and my fam to get our nature fix. I love that it's such a vast park, which so much open space to run, picnic, or post up on a blanket with a book. It also happens to have my son's favorite playground around, so he's always requesting we go! Surrounding the play area are plenty of picnic tables where we have seen grill-out type gatherings before. It's on our list to plan a big one with friends this summer. Plus there's a pavilion down one of the paths that has bathrooms and a covered space which comes in handy. Oh and the BEST part? The very best part!? The relaxing and beautiful walk down into the woods that leads your straight to the Milwaukee shoreline. Everytime I walk down I think that it must be the best kept secret because it's never (ever!) busy. Maybe I'll regret telling the community in this post!? The two pathways, be it quite steep, are wide and paved, winding down into the forest. When you get to the water you find the most stunning and serene views. Sometimes I forget how lucky we are to have Lake Michigan attached to our city. There's nothing not to love at Doctors. Get outdoors and enjoy!

We went cross country skiing with rentals from Nordic Specialists located in the Evergreen Shelter next to the Evergreen lodge. Entry is with a fee or free with your purchase annual WI State parks pass. Not too far from the city, this place has the solitude and nature getaway not too far from the city. Xski rentals were $30 for classic ski that came with shoes poles and skis for two hours. It's also nice in the summer for getting a hike in whether you want a short one or a challenging long hike. There's also an observatory tower you can hike up flights of stairs for a nice view! The evergreen lodge is new and spacious to stay warm during the winter or cool in the shade in the off-winter time.

It's built kinda into a hillside, making for some beautiful and tricky holes. However, it's really unfortunate that it makes it ADA inaccessible. I struggled a lot with the stairs and steeper hills due to a knee injury I have, so that was a smaller bummer. Plenty of space for dogs to play, basketball, baseball fields, tennis courts and paved access to the Milwaukee River Trail. There is a dog group that meets there most mornings around 7.00 so if you don't like being bombarded with off leash dogs, steer clear around that time. The river access is awesome and the river can be taken north to Estabrook park, or south to gordon park and all the way to downtown if you connect with the beerline. The rivertrail is almost always empty, any time of day. Great for dog walking. You'll forget you are in the city.

Franklin Woods' playground area has greatly improved since they put in Kayla's Playground- a…read morehandicap-friendly and large playground to suit many ages. This playground and nearby picnic area is much improved, and they've also doubled the size of the parking lot, which is nice, and the playground is really a popular attraction. I've been coming here to hike the woodland trail for years, and it's a nice secluded hike with one main trail and a short offshoot. It's dog friendly, and we like to hike it year-round. If hiking in the winter, wear boots, as the trail can get icy. It's a nice secluded trail that connects to the neighborhood nearby. The paved loop around the marsh is nice as well. I would like to see them bring back the interpretive nature sign by the woodland path that told you about the numbered trees in the trail. The signs that do remain look unused, and the one by the marsh is broken with a small beehive inside. Small improvements to the "nature center" part of this area would make it five stars.

This park has greatly improved from what it was just a few years ago. It started with a tiny…read moreparking lot and trails through the woods. Then a playground and walking track was added. Now there is a big parking area and a handicap accessible playground- but my favorite part is still the original woodsy trails. From spring through fall(not a fan of winter walking) I have walked these woods, watching the birth, life and death of so many cool plants and foliage. In spring there is an impressive Trillium bloom that can be seen from the road. The trails are good for walking dogs too, but please clean up after them! The walking trail is very flat so anyone of any age can enjoy it. I can't speak for the playground as I'm a bit too old to partake, but the swings were always fun ;)

We were in town for a July 4 getaway vacation. Since we were unfamiliar with the Milwaukee area, I…read moresearched online for parks hosting 4th of July fireworks shows. With our hotel at the nearby Residence Inn in Brookfield, Williams Mitchell park was within range and we headed over there around 8pm. We barely made it there just in time before the park closed it's gate to the public. Pro tip, you do want to arrive at the latest by the 7:00 pm hour to secure a spot because as mentioned by the time we arrived by 8:45, they were closing the park off. The parking spot we secured was the second to last lot in the vicinity. This park is large. In fact, it's over 400+ acres large and boasts a total of 5 public parking lots. Lots 1-3 were already at capacity so we were in lot 4 and we still had a 20 minute walk (each way) to get to the main lawn where everyone was to watch the show. Experienced park goers came equipped with wagons filled with tarps, collapsible chairs, picnic baskets, foldable tables, lighting and meals. Some even set up hours beforehand and set up tents. If these are your aims, you want to come much earlier than 7:00pm to secure a good spot and get your gear situated. The show was spectacular. It was at least 45 minutes in length and the displays were big and bold. I only wished they had accompanying music to go with the firework show. Perhaps a combination of classical, rock, and current pop hits to enhance the experience. Like I said, the park is big and even though we were there a half hour before the start of the show, we still managed to get a decent view of the fireworks. Another Pro tip is to bring bug spray. Seriously. You will need it here. I was unfortunate to not prepare for this and I left with double digit mosquito bites on both legs and feet. The mosquitoes really like me for some reason. Dealing with the aftermath was not fun considering all the itching that followed but despite this, it was worth it. Next year I plan to be armed with Deet and perhaps bathe myself in OFF spray.

I've played mini-golf there several times, and some of the holes are pretty challenging, which keeps the course interesting. Pay for mini-golf in the pro shop. Sometimes they give you a ticket to take to the hut next to the mini-golf course, and you check in and get your putter there. Otherwise they give you the putter and scorecard in the pro shop. I've also used the driving range a few times. You walk into the pro shop to buy whichever size bucket of balls works for you, and head out to the range. The pro shop has what you would expect, and often offers fittings with specific club manufacturers. Check them out!
