We were wandering around downtown Newberg when the skies decided to open up. Unprepared for the rain and with a couple of hours to kill, we decided to seek shelter at VWM to check out the selection and talk to owner Andrew. When I go to a wine shop, I like to see how well organized the store is. I've been in some shops that have open cases of wine at every endcap and it feels disorganized and chaotic, not to mention it makes it very challenging to find anything. On this front, VWM has a well-organized selection and absolutely no clutter on the floors - two walls with wine, and a decent number of labels as well, and plenty of space to walk. The shop focuses on wines from Oregon, which makes sense. Perhaps 60% or more of the labels are from Oregon producers, and most of those are smaller producers that might not see a ton of distribution. There was also a decent selection of champagnes as well as a smattering of still wines from France (mostly Burgundy), Italy, etc. This is a very well-curated selection with some unique wines as well - when's the last time you've seen Beaujolais Blanc or the Saint-Amour cru from Beaujolais? And not to worry if you don't know the first thing about wine. Andrew, the owner, is incredibly knowledgable and knows all of his wines inside out. Whether you're looking for something specific or not sure what to go, you will almost certainly leave the shop with a wine you'll love and within the budget you indicated. In terms of price, you may be able to find some of the wines more cheaply than VWM's price. I looked up a few labels compared to retail prices for shops in my home state and found VWM is about 10% more expensive on average, however I'd gladly pay slightly more to receive the value-added knowledge that Andrew adds to the buying experience - details about the producer, its history, its winemaker, the site, etc. Although many of us that travel to the region are there to visit wineries and do tastings, if you're looking for an excellent shop where you can find some Oregon's best producers all in one place, VWM is definitely the place. Best part is that they can ship to most states so you don't have to worry about carrying a case (or two) of wine back on an airplane and wondering if it'll survive the journey home. read more

I was recently in the area and looking for wine from specific regions/varietals including Chablis, Beaujolais, and of course the Willamette Valley and found this shop which seemed like it would be the best local retail option. It turns out Andrew was on vacation and I sadly missed him (especially given that I'm told he has a connection to New Orleans) but the shop was great. We have been visiting Andrew's wine shop since he first opened 3 yrs ago! A much needed, fabulous addition to the already growing wine country in Newberg, he really knows his wine! My favorite are his pop-up tastings on Friday nights... we have tasted many great wines and chatted with the wine makers at these little events. Andrew is always fun to chat with too.... from gardens to wines, to the growing area... always a joy when we visit! His wine selection also rotates very often which is nice too see. In late July, we stopped here on our way from Seattle to the Bay Area. We were immediately welcomed by Andrew and blown away by the sheer number of local Pinots. We were familiar with some of the more well known producers but explained that we were really interested in knowing about up and coming Pinots both for their quality and price points. Andrew took his time and introduced us to at least a dozen wines, including notes about the wineries' histories as well as their owners. Without doubt, this is the finest wine shop we have visited irrespective of locality. We strongly recommend dropping in to Valley Wine Merchants if you are in the area. Stopped in on our way back to Portland after a delightful overnight stay at the Allison Inn & Spa. What a little gem! Newberg has come a long way and the streets are now dotted with cute little wine and coffee shops, and the old buildings and houses are charming. Valley Wine Merchant matches the charm and is well kept and has a great carefully chosen selection of wines. The owner was extremely personable and friendly, and helped us select a few very nice bottles of wine to take back with us to enjoy later on. He was knowledgeable on the wines we inquired about and I was able to find a particular bottle that I had been looking for. I think it's cool this wine shop has its own wine club!! Instead of joining a wine club from a winery that you ONLY get that wineries' wine, it makes so much sense to join this club, which Andrew totally customizes for you! Want all Oregon wine? All French wine? A mix of all countries? Just white? Just Pinot? He literally asks you all kinds of questions and gets to know your palate, so every bottle matches your taste. I have a number of friends who are wine club members and we've never gotten the same wine as each other in our boxes because we have different tastes. If you just walk in for one bottle he does the same thing (hence why I joined the club). I've even called him from a restaurant and read him the wine list and he told me what bottle to order based on my taste and what food I was ordering!! Amazing! I have my own "wine guy!"
