What a nice little hidden bar. Ring the bell to enter... Once you enter, you are amazed at all the different offerings. So many different beers on tap and way more cans of beer to choose from. We did discover that when you get the beers on tap they're in a pretty small glass but if you buy the can for basically the sameprice you get twice as much. We will definitely be back, but we will be getting the canned beer to enjoy. There is lots to look at in this bar so much stuff on the walls to admire while you're having a nice beer with friends. Oh gosh. I just love everything about this place. Cooler after cooler of international beers. The one "rule" I set for myself is to get something international- something that I'll never be able to get anywhere else. Sounds easy, but Sergio also has a great selection of domestic craft. While roaming around downtown Louisville, multiple locals recommended we stop by Sergio's. I'm so glad we listened because this was such a fun experience. Just getting to know the owner, Sergio, and his eclectic tastes was worth it alone. Sergio's World Beers is the perfect dive bar and is the spot for real beer lovers. Place was amazeballs. Can I sleep in the basement? Would like to live here. I had this place bookmarked in my Louisville collection along with a bunch of places I never had the time to get to. So very happy that my buddy brought this place to my attention as a place I must go to. Should have looked at their hours before getting my ride in. Got there about 1 on Friday and they don't open until two. Walked around the neighborhood for an hour until opening time. There is no prominent signage on the place to indicate Sergio's. Both my driver and I were uncertain. Just trust the address, and I guess, the pictures of the exterior on Yelp. Finally got in. Well, holy moly, this was the place alright. Only about 40 beers on tap, but coolers upon coolers of bottles and cans of beer from all over the world. 1,700 uniques or thereabouts! Knocked off my New Zealand badge on Untappd which is not an easy one to come by. They get knocked down one from a five because I was dying to get back there on my way to the airport and they were not open on time. Supposed to open at two even on Sundays and they were not open by 2:30. Spent a full half hour camped outside their door before I gave up and went with a nearby backup. read more

Thank you Yelp for pointing me to Sergio's. You have to know what you're looking for to find this place. Non-descript door in the middle of a block on Story and windows covered, you don't quite know what you're getting into until you walk in. Speak-easy-esque. And then you walk into what I think of as Cheers with less seating, lack of sassy waitress (erm, server), and a way, WAY bigger selection. I love the bar and really didn't make it past that point since the coolers were all around us anyway. Brightly lit, beer steins adorning the walls, relaxed and welcoming. The bartender was one of the most knowledgable craft beer drinkers I've ever met, steering me from the obscure German gose I had picked out to his recommended pick - another gose of the same vein. If he knows the 'back of the cooler' selections enough to make recommendations his knowledge has got to run deep. You can choose from the variety of taps at the bar, each impressively unique, or you can browse the 'shopping mall of beers' as one Yelper called it by checking out the bottles in the coolers surrounding every inch of non-bar wall space. That was my favorite. Bring your bottles to the bar and they'll pour for you. I've rarely seen a collection of bottled beers like this one, with seasonal rotations from all over, their selection runs deep. My favorite of the night: Bell's Brewery Cherry Stout. I would fight someone for this beer, and I'm a lover not a fighter. They supposedly have food blah blah why go there for food. They have a few TVs there and a game on (soccer) blah blah why go there for sports. Tip: Bring a six-pack holder. Trust me on this. Then at least you don't look like a complete lush walking (stumbling??) back to your car because you are going to want to bring some bottles home. read more

Wow. This place really does attempt to hold all the beers of the world! This is no dressy spot so put your hip t-shirt and jeans on for this joint. Not sure if they offer food as we were passing through like a bunch of kids at a field trip ooing and ahhhing at the plethora of beer on draft and bottles. There isn't really a strong organization strategy for the HUGE assortment of beer. So plan to dig around if you are looking for something in particular. The food isn't necessarily anything special -- but if you're drinking a lot of beer the food is a necessity. I like the nachos, but slap cheese on anything and I'm happy. If you love beer, get in here! Unless you want some "Lite" swill, and then GTFO. Sergio's offers the widest selection of bottles and cans anywhere. Their draft selection of 25-30 is incredible as well. The cooler selection stretches back like a snake through the deceptively large building with reach-in's noted by country and region. Seemingly, everywhere that could be refrigerated was and then filled with beers. All beers can be purchased and drunk there, but all are by the beer. The place is divey and doesn't even really have a sign outside. A scant few bar stools surround the front bar which almost looks homemade and covered in stuff. Netflix nature documentaries were playing when I visited last. Josh behind the bar was great and talked up the menu and the brew selections. There are seats in the back as well, if you need more space. Beers are reasonably priced for their quality and exoticism, but don't expect to get off super cheap. Ok call me a beer bar snob but I can't understand how the ratings for this place are so high. The positive is the Sergio's has tons and tons of beers from around the world. Most of what I saw wasn't overly rare (lot of craft and international beers with large distributions), but admittedly it is tough to see the full selection. This is a dive bar. I'm fine with that. Dive is fine but the place seems dingy. It looks like a hoarder bought a beer bar. There are coolers and fridges (even a residential one or two) packed into every corner of this place. There is no real rhyme or reason to the way they are organized so you probably have spend at least 10 minutes wandering the narrow hallways and aisles to see them all. If there are any other people in there with you it may be tight to move around. There are tons of mismatched glasses on the wall behind the bar which look like they haven't been moved or washed in ages (may have been but they don't look like it). They serve food but between the overall atmosphere and a quick peak in the kitchen as you walk to the back room did not inspire confidence. I want to hear from someone that actually tried the shrimp ceviche here...if they're still alive. That large selection is impressive but also creates a minefield. Going through to select a beer yielded many older/expired beers. For some styles this aging may be a good thing but for things like IPAs, you may end up with a skunky dud if you don't check the date. My friend and I rolled the dice and opted for a draft beer both of which came out foamy and warm. The front room with several coolers and bars was blisteringly hot. It was a warm day so I'm not sure if it was that, all the coolers pumping out heat in tiny rooms, bad or no a/c or all of the above. It was a little better in the back room but there were 4 of us and between the heat of the air and drinks - none of us bothered to finish our beers before leaving. I was a bit perturbed as well that is a cash only place but whatever. That was the cherry in the terrible overall experience. This place 10 years ago was probably unique there were very few places in the country with this type of selection. Fortunately for us, but not Sergios, there are plenty of better beer bars (Louisville Beer Store being one of them) with a not as large but still significant and better quality selection and experience. In all my talking about bars and beer I have never been to an establishment like Sergio's before. If you know what your expectations should be and you really, really, love beer - then you'll love Sergio's. Easy to find and easy to pass by, Sergio's is located on Story ave. No Sign hangs on the storefront to establish you have reached Sergio's. Every visible window is covered with a flag prohibiting anyone to see in or out of the establishment. I finally made it to Sergio's! After hearing so much about it on Yelp, I met friends there last night to toast someone's birthday. It's on Story Ave. You will see everything but Sergio's. No signage, covered windows, dark street. So be prepared to ask yourself, "Did I go too far?" and if you passed Vernon Lanes, the answer is "Yes, yes you did." Inside is very shot gun with the bar in front and tables in the rear of the building. Its main décor is coolers of beer. No, seriously, coolers and coolers of beer, from all over and ranging from $4 - 25+ each. Sergio's also keeps a small selection of beers on tap. It's fun to look through the coolers and pick a different beer each time. What I didn't grab, my friends let me sample from theirs. The bartender will open & pour it for you and everything is nice & cold. Make sure you also pay attention to the alcohol % ... some are quite high and after a couple, you're going to notice the bite. I enjoyed a pale IPA, called California Pale Ale. Truth be told, I loved the trapeze-looking blond flying across the label, but I drank two more of them because it was smooth. Couple of warnings: CASH ONLY. And food isn't served every night so don't let the website fool you. (I do wish there was something available last night though - even a bag of pretzels would've made me happy.) Also, go there with fun people. This isn't a place with music and TVs to distract you. Good ol' Sergio's. I can say this without hyperbole: if Sergio's was anywhere within public transit distance from my house (in Chicago), I would be there at least once a week. Within walking distance, multiple times per week. But I doubt that a bar like this could flourish in a big city. The front feels like someone's living room, only with a small bar and several beer refrigerators; the back is like a cross between a modern speakeasy and a VFW hall. I started off back there because I wanted somewhere quiet to sip my beer and read. As the evening went on and the room filled a bit, it became much more fun to people watch. Then after a while I learned that everyone is a friend in Sergio's back room, myself included. I won't say too much...there may or may not have been a poker game and a lot of off-color humor, but it was just pure, honest, fun camaraderie. I heard some of the funniest lines in my entire life that night, and everyone was really friendly. And oh yeah--the beer. A couple dozen drafts (all good stuff) and hundreds of different bottles (mostly good stuff). To give you an idea of the variety, I counted 17 Bell's labels, some of which I'd never heard of. But after a while, I lost track of what I was drinking. For the most part I was trying new stuff; this joint is great for that: I could probably drink ten different beers a night for several weeks just sampling ones I'd never had before. I can't remember how much it cost either..but who cares? Even if I had sat back there by myself the whole evening, this would still be a solid 4.5. How much you socialize is up to you, but whether you take up with the good ol' boys or sit quietly reading, you can do it while drinking an amazing variety of beers! read more
