Value Village - Charging $3 more than the original price? Lol. - Thrift Stores Near Me - Marysville, Washington

I went to Value Village tonight to shop and when it came time to pay, I tried paying at self checkout with a $50 bill and the machine spat it back out twice. An employee - older guy, little sketchy looking so we'll call him Sketch- come over to try and help, identified it as an older bill - I asked if I could exchange for some smaller bills to try - he said "sure you can go to the bank tomorrow and exchange it." Fair - they're not a bank though it could have been communicated more professionally than that. Then I said I would just go to the regular checkout and THAT'S when Sketch said if the machine rejected the bill they couldnt take it at the regular register either. I had NO other money - not on a card, no other bills - this was it. He took it to talk to the lady at the register, marked it with the color changing pen and then came back and said they couldn't take it. I asked why - I have worked around money, the mark PROVED the bill was REAL. I asked him: "Doesn't this mean this is real" (I already knew the answer was yes) and Sketch says: "I don't know and now that it's marked we can't take it." You don't KNOW but you work at a store that takes cash? You should know this, sir. And YOU'RE the one who marked it!! I also showed him the strip going through the bill and THAT wasnt even enough. "It's a strip," he says, "but not a metal one." How the F do you KNOW that when you don't even know the color the marker is supposed to turn! So asked what my options are - he takes my items, tosses them in the cart haphazardly and tells me: "you can come back tomorrow when you have real money and pay for them." I HAD REAL MONEY!! It was MARKED - the strip was inside the bill and the holographic face was on it!! How much more real could it be?! So I ask: "Well what if I come in tomorrow morning and pay for it with the same bill?" Like how would they know? Sketch says: "So you're saying you're going to come back and use this same bill tomorrow?" I told him: "That is NOW what I said" (Don't put words in my mouth, sir!) "I asked IF - how will the morning crew know?" "Oh they won't take a marked bill and I'm gonna tell them." So I finally said: "Fine! Go ahead and save them and I'll be back tomorrow morning." My sister overheard and comes over, I explain what's going on - my sister paid for my purchases with a card (Thanks sis!) which I repayed with the bill. Here's the thing about that $50 bill - I got it this morning from a CURRENCY EXCHANGE after exchanging some Euros and the bank ATM my sister deposited it in right afterwards took it no problem. If it wasnt real, the bank ATM certainly would have rejected it. My sister also worked with money and said yes that mark color meant it was authentic. IT WAS REAL AND I SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN HARASSED ABOUT IT!! My sister also said that Sketch seemed to be following us around the store and we had my niece with us. This may have also been discriminatory as he likely thought we were a lesbian couple with a kid and Value Village claims to be "Christian". Must've missed that "love thy neighbor" verse. I will NEVER be back to this Value Village and I will be getting in touch with their higher ups so they can be aware that their Marysville location won't take legal tender after its been PROVEN TO BE REAL and may be discriminatory against gay people even when they might not be gay read more

If I could give zero stars I would. You get these items from a donations FOR FREE!! ZERO DOLLARS!!! Everything here is extremely expensive especially because they're selling used items! You should be ashamed of yourself, this is stuff that I can't even afford working full time-I can't even begin to imagine how bad it is for the less fortunate. These jeans should be $10 maximum, these weren't even the highest priced pair that I saw. read more

I did buy a lot of fitness equipment here for my senior fitness center about a half a mile away. I also give away a lot of things to this value village. I had a very nice bench that was about 8 feet long that I wanted to donate yesterday so I loaded in my truck, and when I I got to the donation center, the guy said oh well this is wet. We can't take it and I was like that's funny, you're kidding right? And he's like no I'm serious. It's wet., I was all....dude get a towel, it's hardly wet. I came from about a half a mile away, and barely started raining. I'll help you dry it. But he insisted he couldn't take it. He was a real a-hole about it too. I didn't argue, I just left. I have no problem, taking my donations elsewhere! VV could've probably put it on the floor for about 60 bucks, whatever... in general this place has no customer service. They try to run you through self check out just like everywhere else, but they have no register open for people who don't want to do self check out. I'm done with this place. read more

I enjoyed today's shopping at value Village Tom. The guy upfront was super sweet. The only thing that I would recommend is that they have a live voice over the intercom, letting people know what color of the day it was. I was quite confused. There was blue or green the signs indicated it looked blue, but somebody said it was green, the clothes were organized very nicely and the staff was great. I would give you five stars darling. You're doing great and I would come again to your store thank you so much. read more

Might as well take the Value out of your name. A company who's products are donated, selling things like Lodge skillets for over retail price is gross! I am impressed with the gal cleaning the carts and greeting the customers as they walk in. She's friendly and informative. This is a fairly big store with lots of stuff for sale. I have shopped here for several years since I live nearby and it is easy to just drop in every couple weeks or so. Most of the time, though, I leave with nothing. I would guess I probably actually BUY something about every fourth visit. This is partly due to the fact sometimes there just isn't anything there for me, but often there are items I would purchase if the price was more reasonable. Clothing is especially way overpriced, even worn, torn, stained stuff. I don't even bother looking through the very large clothing selection anymore because the prices are just ridiculous. I'd rather pay a little more and get new clothing from a discounter like Ross. Fortunately, there are other departments with more reasonable pricing, including books, artwork, toys, games, and furniture. Like many other VV stores, this one recently went to self-checkout only. If you'd rather patronize a thrift store that still rings your purchases up for you, Goodwill is just a ways down State Avenue from VV. I find prices there to be generally more reasonable, especially on clothing. read more

Come here and yes you can find good bargains, but be careful as a lot of the items are actually more expensive here then you can find them new, or from Facebook market place. I mean some of the clothing is sooo worn out and they still want a large sum for it since it's a name brand Used dirty nasty shoes with worn out soles are 13 bucks just because they are Nike, no thanks that is absurd. The staff are generally very friendly, but the fact that the prices are so high, I don't want to donate my things here, to a business that Claims to help people by selling cheap second hand items only to find out that the prices are so high. My top favorite Thriftstore! ALWAYS find at least 5 things that I NEED, from clothes to movies to pet supplies to shoes to trinkets and furniture. This is my favorite second hand clothing store in the area. They are always very organized, friendly staff and plenty of selection to choose from. The prices seem to be creeping up but are still reasonable... I donate so I do take advantage of their 30% coupon when I can. They get busy but even when there is a line the checkers are quick and friendly. The only CON is they need to update and clean their bathroom more. I bought 3 pairs of jean shorts today at the Marysville branch. I was told by an "alleged" brand new employee that we could try them on at home (due to covid) and would have 14 days to return any or all of them. I charged the jeans on my credit card and went home, tried them all on and found that only the $6 pair of jean shorts did not fit correctly. I brought them back with the receipt and was told I had to buy something immediately for $6 to replace this item--no return credit to my account--No credit exchange for shopping for something some other time. Tell me why Value Village can't return to their old return policy. How is the idiotic 'no refund' policy helping control Covid-19? It makes no sense. It is a simple computer transaction that requires NO exchange of cash (potentially spreading the virus). They are going to put this pair of jean shorts right back on the shelf so why would a 'no refund' policy like this make any dent in our current pandemic? I chalk it up to yet another store policy set up to make shopping less convenient for the masses benefiting only Value Village in the short run but detrimental to the company long term. Waste of time waste of a trip. This thrift store doesn't even directly help any non profit. Their prices are atrocious. Had to exchange things during this pandemic recently because fitting rooms are closed I took the tags off to wash the Jeans we bought for precautions sanitary reasons. The supervisor would not exchange any of the items that I had with the tags and the receipt because they didnt match but they were all the items I bought there! How about your labels dont even match the quality or the price of the item they should be! So overpriced. She went over all of them 15 mins just to tell me she wouldn't exchange them. I'm not annoyed at her so much but it's not my fault they label and make their stuff so much more then it should be so much that even the supervisors wouldn't/couldnt fathom that the item/price matches what THEY sold to me. Could've bought cheaper new items at ross or marshalls wanted to used recycle goods even though couldnt try them . Was negative experience. The supervisor said she wouldn't exchange and then just left the poor cashier to deal with me (a possibly angry customer but I wasnt I just grabbed the stuff and left). Felt bad the supervisor just abandoned her employee also to deal with what some other people wouldve been real upset about. read more

Smells BAD. One thing I have never understood about thrift stores: Why not launder the clothing before placing it on racks in your stores? Sure, it may cost a little extra, but certainly the extra profits would make up for it. People would likely be willing to pay more and you wouldn't scare off the THOUSANDS of potential clients (like me) who find the smell of 6 month of barf and sour milk on clothing so unappealing. read more

My error today was being a professionally dressed male in slacks and button up long sleeve shirt carrying my laptop bag. Store employee told me I couldn't have a bag, but had no issue with every other female having a bag (several larger than my laptop bag.). Apparently I need to have a prettier laptop bag. Today was my first ever visit to a consignment/thrift store. It will not be my last. Recently out of the military and entering the civilian work force for the first time ever, I found myself in need of an entire new wardrobe. My first choice would have been Men's Warehouse but I don't exactly have a few thousand dollars laying around to be spent on clothes. So, on a complete whim, I decided to check out my local Value Village before heading to some department stores. I sure am glad that I made that choice! This location is HUGE. There are racks and racks and racks of clothes. Good clothes. Brand new clothes. CHEAP CLOTHES. I left with 5 pair of dress pants, 5 dress shirts, 9 long-sleeved knit shirts, 1 pair of dress shoes, and 1 pair of dress socks all for under $170. Unbelievable prices. The store is clean and the fitting rooms were fine. The employees were a little standoffish and seemed to talk about customers aloud. While checking out I listened to an entire conversation between two employees about how a certain customer who had just entered was probably shoplifting. That was a little weird. Other than that my visit phenomenal. Don't let the stigma of thrift shopping get to you. It's totally worth it. Save some bucks and shop at Value Village the next time you have needs. read more

I shop at thrift stores regularly and this one was a huge disappointment. While the store is huge and packed with used goodness, the prices are just way too high for used items!!! I found a handful of things that I wanted to pay for like books (buy 4 get one free,) a used women's leather jacket for $19.99, and a pair of jeans for $7.99. It is a HUGE pet peeve of mine when thrift stores do not have a public restroom that is easily accessible to the people. It is very disrespectful to have to ask "permission" to use the restroom. Do we look like we are four years old? NO! There is only ONE restroom which had a line of course. It would be a nightmare for women with children. I can only imagine!! The changing rooms are so small. No circulation. The changing room attendant was so nice and helpful. She is the reason for one of the two stars. The other star is due to the cashiers. They were helpful and friendly. However I will NOT be returning to this location. Ever. Prices are too high. I have no reason to want to pay high prices for used items. I've been shopping this same store for over a year now and it continues to get progressively more and more expensive which is sad. I shop here a lot and can definitely tell that you really only find deals on clothing or accessories based on which employee is doing the pricing. They had a michael kors used purse with lots of flaws priced for $70 when you can go to tj maxx and buy a brand new one with more current style for $100. Often shirts are priced equal or higher than just going directly to a store like ross. So now I really only shop this store when I get the 50% off coupons In email or the 20% ones which barely make a dent in the costs. I think the store would def get more sales if they made prices more affordable without having to use coupons and it would definitely benefit the customers too. I visit our Value Village fairly often and usually have pretty good luck. The store is reasonably clean for a thrift and huge, lots of items and they restock several times throughout the day. If you go during the week you'll mostly have the place to yourself. Minus one star for the pricing system, which tends to be on the higher end and kind of erratic. I don't expect them to be experts on the wide variety that comes through the store, but I've found glaring mistakes, like books of similar condition from the same publisher and part of a *series* all priced differently. I've also seen books priced higher than the original tag, such as having an old Borders tag for $2.99 right on the cover and Value Village pricing it $5.99, things like that. The first place I head to is the crafts section, which is also hit or miss on pricing. I've purchased perfect skeins of Cascade 220 and Malabrigo yarns for $3.99, and the next day they'll have old, scratchy, puke green acrylic that looks like it's been marinating in cat fur since the 1970's priced similarly. My advice: block out two hours for browsing, wear comfy shoes, bring hand sanitizer, and use your smart phone to compare ebay pricing on anything vintage before you buy. Oh and Value Village, if you need someone local to help you with craft and yarn pricing, I'm here. Seriously. Call me if you have yarn. read more

If I let myself I could lose all track of time and spend hours looking, and that would just be for clothes and accessories. Always finding neat things for my hand made business at a good price.
