I think I'm on a mission to…read more. SAVE RATON!! So, I've been going to and from CA to CO for the past two+ years and the Amtrak has definitely been a secret pleasure of mine. The rates are pretty darn reasonable and the experience is quite nice. One stop I thought was simply magical was Raton. It let me know that we're almost to CO or well on my way back west. Whether I'm jumping off to hitch a ride on the Grey Hound connector to hit the major cities, or hanging tight on the train a little longer to visit my cousin who lives near the La Junta station... Raton is a quiet town with some of the sweetest folk one can encounter. Enter "The Pack Rat" One of a few places open this past Labor Day was this great place. Browse for staple souvenirs and even amazing locally made goodies like rosaries, jewelry, crafty items, and even yummy eats. Our 2 hour delay got us patronizing and socializing at the Pack Rat. The owners were cordial and very helpful. They were very inviting and informative. Not too pushy and gave us just enough space to freely move about the establishment without feeling watched or pressured. They had a fairly large selection of dream catchers. Small to big! We snatched a howling wolf that was pretty huge for $25. A definite deal considering I got one in AZ or UT from a "native" that was the size of a half dollar for 15 bucks. They adorn the walls, so please check them out if your into them. I walked out with some snacks for the road, a habanero salsa, that catcher, and a few other trinkets. The Pack Rat is a tourist must because what's better than good people, local items, reasonable prices, and tons of souvenirs to sift through?? I was fully satisfied with the purchase I made and would love to come back again. AMTRAK, would you please consider re-opening the Raton station? Spread the word!!! I tried their milk chocolate walnut and milk chocolate almond fudge flavors; I ordered a pound of fudge and got another 1/4 pound of the cinna-swirl flavor fudge for free. The cinna-swirl was my favorite of the bunch. I was hoping the milk chocolate ones would be richer than they ended up being, but they were still very tasty. The white chocolate almond clusters were delicious. I will be sure to stop by again next time I'm in the area.

Every time I'm in town I love to stop by the store to see the new Vera Bradley bags and other fun goodies that the store has. You'll find things in here that you never knew you needed like personalized tweezers, comfy socks, or a piece of Red River memorabilia. This store is packed with great finds and definitely the best place to shop in town. Adorable (well, everything is adorable in Taos; it's the southwestern charm for sure!) but it's more than what its appearance says it all. You have to try their products and see for yourself. What I got me were a few bon bons and a chocolate torte (the whiskey kind). -Miso Caramel: is shaped like a mushroom. Even if you might not be a fan of miso based (everything), you should try these bon bons anyway as they don't taste like miso at all. I was quite shocked with this myself (well, I like miso soup; miso taste doesn't bother me at all. Even so, Miso chocolate candy was something I didn't know what to expect out of. That is why I am saying that I was surprised by it.) -New Mexico , Spicy: was also surprising. The kick in these tiny pieces was quite mighty and yet it was tolerable. -Whisky Torte: All sorts of organic ingredients are used to make these delightful tortes. Tortes tend to be a lot heavier than traditional cakes as their texture is that of fudge. And yet, that shouldn't be a reason for you to steer clear from it as this chocolatier perfected the torte in a way that it will not be too rich or heavy for your taste or stomach. At least that is what I thought when I tasted it. Another must-try item on their menu offerings. For its interior, it's mostly and simply grey on walls but this emits the "chicness" that doesn't overshadow the theme of its business. You should also pay attention to the ceilings and the floors. A careful attention to entertain the guests' eyes is seen throughout. Service was good. I first went here late in the afternoon (close to its closing time). I quickly glanced at each section of the store inside. The kind gentleman upfront wanted to assist me but after asking him if it was open tomorrow (it would be Sunday), he said yes to which I gave him my promise that I would be back tomorrow. The same man assisted me when I was back the very next day to make a purchase. Not sure if he remembered me or not. It's not chocolate bon bons or tortes you can enjoy at this store. The café offers tasting trios, mocha, chocolate mouse, ice cream, affogato, hot chocolate, and espresso and so on. This is a haven for chocolate fanatics.
