I think I'm on a mission to…read more. SAVE RATON!! So, I've been going to and from CA to CO for the past two+ years and the Amtrak has definitely been a secret pleasure of mine. The rates are pretty darn reasonable and the experience is quite nice. One stop I thought was simply magical was Raton. It let me know that we're almost to CO or well on my way back west. Whether I'm jumping off to hitch a ride on the Grey Hound connector to hit the major cities, or hanging tight on the train a little longer to visit my cousin who lives near the La Junta station... Raton is a quiet town with some of the sweetest folk one can encounter. Enter "The Pack Rat" One of a few places open this past Labor Day was this great place. Browse for staple souvenirs and even amazing locally made goodies like rosaries, jewelry, crafty items, and even yummy eats. Our 2 hour delay got us patronizing and socializing at the Pack Rat. The owners were cordial and very helpful. They were very inviting and informative. Not too pushy and gave us just enough space to freely move about the establishment without feeling watched or pressured. They had a fairly large selection of dream catchers. Small to big! We snatched a howling wolf that was pretty huge for $25. A definite deal considering I got one in AZ or UT from a "native" that was the size of a half dollar for 15 bucks. They adorn the walls, so please check them out if your into them. I walked out with some snacks for the road, a habanero salsa, that catcher, and a few other trinkets. The Pack Rat is a tourist must because what's better than good people, local items, reasonable prices, and tons of souvenirs to sift through?? I was fully satisfied with the purchase I made and would love to come back again. AMTRAK, would you please consider re-opening the Raton station? Spread the word!!! My vacation in Red River cannot end without some for now and later. My husband has to have sugar-free. I tasted it and could tell no difference, it was delicious. Sadly, I lost all my fudge and 2 shirts I bought. The bright thought is the do ship for on-line orders. Yes it is pricey but worth every cent. There is the most adorable area for sleepwear, and further back is the largest collection of t-shirts imaginable. A variety of ages makes up our group--3 years old to 66 years young. We can count on each and every one of us finding something in Main Street Mercantile: candy, toys, clothing, accessories, jewelry, candles, memorabilia. Even if you might not be a fan of miso based (everything), you should try these bon bons anyway as they don't taste like miso at all. I was quite shocked with this myself (well, I like miso soup; miso taste doesn't bother me at all. Even so, Miso chocolate candy was something I didn't know what to expect out of. The kick in these tiny pieces was quite mighty and yet it was tolerable. -Whisky Torte: All sorts of organic ingredients are used to make these delightful tortes. Tortes tend to be a lot heavier than traditional cakes as their texture is that of fudge. And yet, that shouldn't be a reason for you to steer clear from it as this chocolatier perfected the torte in a way that it will not be too rich or heavy for your taste or stomach. At least that is what I thought when I tasted it. Another must-try item on their menu offerings. For its interior, it's mostly and simply grey on walls but this emits the "chicness" that doesn't overshadow the theme of its business. You should also pay attention to the ceilings and the floors. A careful attention to entertain the guests' eyes is seen throughout. Service was good. I first went here late in the afternoon (close to its closing time). I quickly glanced at each section of the store inside. The kind gentleman upfront wanted to assist me but after asking him if it was open tomorrow (it would be Sunday), he said yes to which I gave him my promise that I would be back tomorrow. The same man assisted me when I was back the very next day to make a purchase. Not sure if he remembered me or not. It's not chocolate bon bons or tortes you can enjoy at this store. The café offers tasting trios, mocha, chocolate mouse, ice cream, affogato, hot chocolate, and espresso and so on. This is a haven for chocolate fanatics.

The cookies for the sammich were pretty sweet on their own, so the homemade ice cream definitely helped with that. I also tried one of their homemade Salted Caramels, but I wasn't a fan of them.
