Me and my family are heading on vacation and needed a spot to eat. We settled on Van Born Tavern and Grill. Did not disappoint at all, very much so exceeded our expectations. To start off, the service was amazing some of the best I have ever had. We asked what would she recommend and she gave us so many suggestions and we wanted all of it. She did not need to give us any recommendations because everything would be amazing. Next, the food was amazing!!! We had the Cajun steak bites as an appetizer it was some of the best food I have ever had. It was gone within seconds. I had the classic burger it was great and I don't even like burgers that much. My parents had the euro they said "the bomb diggity." All they said and that's all they needed to say. (The bomb diggity was the sauce) Finally, since we arrived late there was no one around. Therefore, we had a great dinner with our family. The ambiance was nice, very comforting. In conclusion, the only bad thing about this place is that there's not one near us. I can't say one bad thing about this place. The bartenders are friendly, the food is delicious and the prices really aren't bad. This area isn't exactly known for its craft beer connoisseur-ism, so it's surprising there's a craft beer bar around. I love it. It's nice competition for Bierkeller without the sometimes-douchey crowd. The diners and drinkers here tend to be in their 40s and 50s, making it a pretty chill place for dinner or to stop in for a few beers. I've ordered food several times and always love it. Their pulled pork is really good, so is their pizza. Van Born Tavern has an upscale sports bar feel without the ridiculous prices. You can get a couple beers and dinner for around $40. I'm not a big fan of bar food, in general. But the food here is pretty good. Salmon, fish & chips, wings, classic burger with an egg, nachos...none of it was disappointing. It was a pleasant surprise. The staff is friendly and attentive. If friends want to go to a bar for dinner, I don't complain about this choice. There is a downside: Yes, the atmosphere is nice for a bar. But the music tends to be pop-country or top 40 hip hop (or whatever the hell they call that sonic slop) which causes tortured screams inside my head. It is played unnecessarily loud and that forces a limited conversation where you have to shout simple sentences and repeat yourself to be understood. I really hate that part. Came here after spending the afternoon at Henry Ford, and I have to say it was excellent! Very clean and comfortable. We arrived with a party of 7 and that staff was amazing. Everything came out quickly. The pickle fries were excellent! My husband had the jumbo shrimp which are hand battered-- soo good! The pizza was great, the rueben was on point! We've been a good handful of times now, and have never had a bad experience. Their tap list is very impressive for the area, and their prices on drafts are even more impressive. Very few beers will cost you more than about $5.50, which includes a bunch of crafts - a lot of which are a little off the beaten path, i.e. Not your boring safe choices. If you're familiar with the lineup at Pete's Place down Telegraph a bit, you could compare it pretty closely to theirs. We've sampled a few food items so far, and everything has been great. Their soups are all very good, as are the fish and chips, burgers, and pulled pork sandwiches. The fries are those thick battered-and-seasoned ones not too dissimilar from the ones Burger King used to have years ago. Not my favorite, but they'll do. Bartenders have all been wonderful, no complaints on service. I don't think we've seen the same waitress or bartender twice, though, which makes me wonder. Not a fancy place by any means, but that's not what they claim to be anyway. In fact, 75% of their customers seem to be blue collar people drinking domestic bottles. So if that's more your scene, fear not. This place is still for you. read more

I've been to Van Born Tavern a handful of times since starting a job in the neighborhood this summer. I definitely like this place! The good: - The beer selection is excellent... lots of options on tap, at reasonable prices. - The tacos are on special during happy hour (last time I visited, they were $1.50 each) and they were excellent. Not authentic, like the taco stand down on Allen Rd, but excellent in the "American / Tex-Mex / Salsa that tastes like tomato sauce" kind of taco. That is intended as an honest compliment :) - The Cuban sandwich I had this week was amazing! I hope it makes it to the regular menu at some point, because it was on the specials board. The pork was tender, the ham piled generously, and the bun held it all together like a champ. With plenty of ooey gooey cheese. - Loved their chicken lemon rice soup as a substitute for their solid-but-unremarkable french fries. - Parking is plentiful, the interior feels modern and fun. - Big garage door makes for a nice open patio where you can still chat with the bartenders, and gives the place an open and airy feel on days with pleasant weather (more on that later). - Servers have always been really pleasant. The meh: - Service has been hit or miss. I've gone an entire lunch without a water refill even when there were only three tables with patrons. - The specials are a pretty good value. But if you don't go with a special, many of the lunch items are $8-9 without a side or a drink. That's a pretty expensive lunch for "bar food" in south Dearborn Heights. The ugly: - Another reviewer mentioned this, too: when it's 85+ degrees outside, a restaurant probably shouldn't open their huge, beautiful garage door and have patrons sitting on the patio. I just had lunch here today. I'm under the impression that the "chef" has never heard of seasoning! Talk about bland flavor! The fries taste like potato and vegetable oil. The burger, and tuna melt both were about as bland as could be. The French onion soup was pretty standard nothing blew me away, I wasn't expecting a meal to move mountains but I thought it was gonna be better than that! My server was just fine she was really efficient and fast. The atmosphere was decent. I am giving two stars because the food was so ordinary and boring. Don't let the bad reviews of this place turn you away! Everything we have tried here has been very good! We love the chicken nachos and the pizza! The chicken nachos are loaded with cheese and very flavorful chicken and all the other toppings. The pizza we love the most is the Tavern pizza, the garlic crust is very flavorful and really crispy and not real thick! The service is always good we sometimes eat in but mostly carry out. Well nice and cool except that 88 percent humid air made it uncomfortable. Oh well our super waitress Deanna rocks, , fast funny and helpful. We ordered a Double Damn Patty Melt a full pound of love perfectly cooked loaded with flavor. A big Beer IPA rules perfect paired with the Mega Appetizer Platter be Tater Boats, Wing Dings, Pickle Fries and mega delicious Chicken Fingers we both agreed some of the best ever. They proudly serve Scotty O Hotty hot sauce, , I slathered on my wings Beer Bacon Chipotle only the best money can buy. Server Brandi, was super rude sad to say. gave me cocktail sauce instead of salsa and then argued with me about it! Wtf. Then when I ask for a box to go, she said.." arg.. like I ain't busy!!" A friend of mine recommended this tavern to me. I went in for lunch one afternoon and I was blown away at how nice it was. We ordered the steak bites as an appetizer, they were so good. My husband ordered the boneless wings and I ordered a BBQ chicken pizza with butter parm crust. The pizza was sooo good, the crust was just crunchy enough. I've been here a handful of times now. Each time has been great. Good service.large portions of good quality food. The salads are all large.... almost big enough for two people. They have a lot of toppings and aren't 90% lettuce. The mac and cheese is great. Hearty and filling. Love all of the choices of beer on tap. You can even sample them for only $1. Solid three stars. It's walkable from my home which is always a bonus. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich which was nice, predictable fries. Nice food. The moscato was an inexpensive moscato (along the lines of Barefoot or such). Please upgrade this with something nicer. The brunch food was great but the service is something to be improved upon. Our server had one table (ours) and spent a lot of their time sitting at the bar looking at their phone or chatting with the other server. We were never checked on. This place was just OK. We arrived about 6:15pm and sat at the bar. We were given beer menus and the bartender disappeared. Beer prices were on par with other places like JP McGuires. The food menu is extensive and reminds me of a coney island. Many greek options including Saganaki, gyros etc. My problem with establishment was it was not really a bar vibe, but more of a coney island vibe. I think many in the area will like this but we were looking for more of a bar atmosphere. It took forever for the bartender to take our order since she was taking selfies at the end of the bar for 10 minutes before she came back. That immediately turned me off. Then one of the other waitresses came up and started complaining about her day. After a long day of work, I didn't need to hear that. My husband ordered the house burger for $7.99. Fair price. I ordered the personal pizza for $7.99. Thought this a bit overpriced for what I got. Both his burger and my pizza were satisfactory, but nothing special or something we couldn't get elsewhere. Our bill for three large beers, one small beer, a personal pizza and burger was $42.00. Not sure if it's someplace we'll come back to. I wasn't digging the vibe and definitely felt more like a family restaurant than a bar to me. I hope they do well and I think the neighborhood needs it and will enjoy it. Just not for me. read more
