I have never been so excited to write a review for Yelp as I am to write about my experience at Van Cleef Hair Studio, it's the best in Chicago! OK, let me calm down. But seriously, I had one of the best salon experience's I've ever had in my life at Van Cleef! Kudos to the whole team! I made an appointment with Van Cleef after reading some great Yelp reviews about a specific stylist - Evvy (I'll get to her fabulousness later). So I called the studio -- the receptionist was warm and informative. I was able to book an appoinment two weeks out, she answered all my questions about products and pricing. I even received a follow-up phone call confirming my appointment the day before my service. Excellent customer orientation! When I arrived, I was greeted by the receptionist. I filled out a first-time-customer card, and was told I would be receiving a discount card for my next service (Awesome!). They informed Evvy that I had arrived and instructed me to go to the changing room and put on a robe. The entire studio is beautiful, great decor and supurb lighting through out the entire facility. Everything was clean, the air was fresh and the overall atmosphere was warm and friendly. I changed into my robe and waited for about 5 minutes until Evvy greeted me. What a sweetheart she is! Down to earth and very friendly. She walked me back to her chair and asked me general questions about my hair history, what types of products I would like, and any special instructions I had for my service. Once again, amazing! She went right to work. Chatting with me about how I found the salon, what I'm interested in and if I like Chicago since I just recently moved here.... When I was ready to be shampooed and deep conditioned, I was greeted by Evvy's assistant Lamount. Talk about AMAZING! This man gave me the BEST shampoo/massage and deep condition that I have ever had in my life. It was so relaxing I dozed off a couple times... I sat under the dryer with my deep conditioner in my hair for about 10 minutes (which is great because normally stylists leave you under the dryer for WAY too long). Lamount rinsed me and blow dried my hair so gently -- this is key because I hate stylists who are rough with your hair and scalp. Lamount was gentle and attentive. Next Evvy hydrated my hair, trimmed it and flat ironed it in less than 30 minutes, period. Never in my life have I been in a salon for a relaxer, deep condition, blow-dry, trim and style and left in 1 hour. Yes, that's right ladies, 1 HOUR. My hair looked, smelled and felt FABULOUS. I've never had so much body and volume in my hair. Not to mention my scalp felt renewed and hydrated. No over-processing, no overheating, no rough handling of my scalp or hair. Just sheer perfection... I was too through with myself, smiling ear to ear when I jumped out of the styling chair, happy as can be! Before I left to pay for my services, Evvy gave me her card and a HUGE hug and said she was very happy to meet me and she looks forward to seeing me again soon. And that she will. I will now have a standing appointment with Evvy until that woman retires!!! Not to mention, every single woman in the salon walked out looking fierce and FABULOUS. Happy bouncy, curly, straight, silky and shiny, relaxed, natural, everything. The whole nine-yards. I paid for my services and left a nice tip for both Evvy and Lamount, her assistant. The receptionists made sure I was all set to go, and had a good experience. In summary: Van Cleer Hair Studo is a classy salon with excellent customer orientation, and amazing stylists. They specialize in natural and relaxed hair for African-American women, and even offer spa services. I highly recommend Evvy and her assistant Lamount (Evvy specializes in natural hair, color and cutting but, she is good and passionate about all types of hair services). Dear every other salon in Chicago, It's been fun (not really) but I have a new love...the name is Van Cleef. I moved to Chicago 7+ years ago from Los Angeles and had to come to the realization that it was inappropriate to only get my hair done when visiting the fam; traditionally once a year with my family stylist who's been taming my mane since I was a kid. I've avidly searched the Southside, Westside, Northside, the Moon... no luck. I came to Yelp hoping that I could find a salon that wasn't a 30+ minute drive away from my Logan Square residence... low and behold I found Van Cleef conveniently downtown! I figured my trip to Barbados this weekend was a great excuse to make an appointment and try them out today. Of course I did my research and checked the website/read other reviews. I figured I wouldn't nab an appointment with the owner, but from everyone's raving recommendations, he clearly had a competent staff so I was willing to try anyone. Shockingly I was provided an appointment with Rahni. The customer service and efficiency of the staff is AMAZING! Coffee and tea provided, greeted and seated pretty much immediately, and Rahni wasted no time fixing me up. I was out by 9:15am (7:30am appointment), which is mission critical because one thing that I ABSOLUTELY HATE is sitting in a salon for 4 damn hours because the stylist can't multitask and is running his/her damn mouth. Rahni could carry-on a convo while sticking to the task at hand: clearly a professional. Yes, Yes, YAAAAAAAAS! A little pricier than I'm accustomed to but you get what you pay for right? Rahni has a really loyal clientele. He did my hair years ago and it was absoutely beautiful. I didn't remain a client only because it wasn't convenient for me at the time. Many years later I came back to the salon when Carrie Stewart joined the staff. She did my hair for a few years before I moved away to California and I was always happy with her work. The fact that so many black women trust this Italian girl with their hair is a huge compliment!!! But Rahni has such a a good staff, truthfully-I would trust almost anyone there with my hair. I decided to start 2011 on a different hair-foot, so to speak. I'd had enough of passive aggressive hair stylists, progressively shorter and less healthy hair, and the implication that I'd been doing everything wrong with my hair each time I sat down in my stylist's chair (the only thing I did wrong was stick with his behind as long as I did). I'm so glad I woke up and had the courage to change! Danielle is a fantastic person and hair stylist. She's ON TIME (and doesn't take all day), concerned about the health of my hair, and does a great job instructing me on hair maintenance between appointments. I moved to Chicago from Detroit a few months ago and had been looking for a stylist every since. Two things I don't play about, my hair and my time. I had decided to go back to the short style I had been rocking and loving a couple years ago, but that was the problem. If I went short, I needed to have someone here I could go to for maintenance. I was planning a trip home in a couple weeks and could have gone to my home stylist for the cut but I'm impatient and needed it cut NOW! After scoping out some yelp reviews and getting an idea on prices (I'm a grad student, I can't/won't pay the $85 some salons were charging for a relaxer touch-up). I called Van Cleef and the wonderful, amazing awesomeness started from the moment they answered the phone. I'm a sucker for good customer service. Once I told the receptionist I was a new client, she transferred me to Darryl, the salon manager who asked me what I wanted (short cut, natural on the top because I wear it that way sometimes and relaxed in the back and on the sides because well, you know). Immediately, he placed me with Danielle. I called on Tuesday and had my choice of times for Friday. Friday morning I walked in and as everyone has stated, they called Danielle and sent me to the coat room to hang up my coat and get a robe. 5 minutes later, Danielle came over and took me to her chair, LUV HUH! We talked about my picture and what I was looking for and throughout the appointment she continued to check in with me and make sure we were on the same page as far as the cut and the style. We also talked about what to do about my color moving forward. It was a great experience. And I loved/love my hair. It's everything I asked for, cute, a little edgy, easy to maintain and very me. Oh and they have product, so I was able to walk out with what I needed to keep my hair fabulous. I kept hearing about Van Cleef via word of mouth and finally I just broke down and made an appointment because I was looking ROUGH. I called and made an appointment for a Saturday at Noon and I was immediately afraid. After some fairly negative salon experiences, I knew that a salon stay could last all day and I could fall victim. I got there at Noon on the dot and checked in with the receptionist. Then I immediately met my stylist, Danielle, and she began to go to work. She was very thorough and listened to me as I told her my concerns and what I wanted. What I really loved is that she would make a suggestion and not tell me what I NEEDED to do, but what I SHOULD do in her opinion and she left it up to me. At previous salons, I usually had a stylist make a statement and then act on it. No questions asked. And like Nia W, the bill was $90 before tip as well. That was pretty rich for my blood as the most I have paid for a wash and blowout is $75. However, since I told Danielle about my lifestyle and that I wear my hair natural most of the time and I didn't plan on coming every two weeks for a blowout, she gave me some GREAT tips for handling my hair at home and what I could do. I mean, she seriously talked to me for about 15 minutes after she was finished and discussed products, hair styles and maintenance for my hair care welfare. If I could give more stars then i would... where should i begin. I was looking for a new hairstylist that was close to my current employment.. I had a few conditions 1. They knew how to do African American Hair that was in it's natural state 2. I wanted Color that blended perfectly with my previous color ( i'm a honey blonde) 3. Upon arrival i felt special.. I was served refreshing tea... I sat down with Danielle who then took 30 minutes to find out what type of look, i was looking for. She said " you are trusting me with alot on your first chance ( cut, color and style) i said i have confidence in my yelp reviewers ( free plug) .. I review hair stylist all the time.. plus i've been going to beauticians since i was 5 and at 30 i have a knack for picking out great stylist. So we began our process she was very detailed oriented.. she applied the color, when my dryer went off, her timer went off and she pulled me from the dryer immediately. washed me throughly, gave me a deep conditioner and began to style my hair.. 3hrs later ( i was her only client) . I looked great! i was very, very, very pleased! i see why this place gets raved reviews.. Just for my yelpers.. No one is paying me to write this review.. i have no stock in Van Cleef.. I was just your average woman fed up with waiting in hair salons, listening to the gossip, arriving at hair salons to find out 10 people have the same hair appointment time, fed up with 2 different assistants working on my hair and fed up with people who don't know how to style hair that fits to your face. I found the place for us. Danielle was great!!! and i will surely go back again ( psst.. i think i found me a regular stylist) However, every one did great hair.. no one person came out looking the same.. ( you know that tired featured look yehiah does ) This lovely person gave me style! and my man absolutely loves it! I think the total cost was about $115 but i gave her a great tip... WHY DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO SEE THE LIGHT?! I have short, relaxed hair. Due to everyday stress, working out, a bit of unintentional over-processing, and a family history of alopecia, my hair was in a crisis. After reading reviews for several salons, decided to try VC. I called on a Tuesday and, after a very helpful conversation with the receptionist about what I wanted during my visit, was able to get an appointment for the following day. From the moment you walk in, everyone is friendly and inviting--great customer service. My stylist was Danielle. She is simply amazing! She took the time to sit down and discuss my hair concerns, history, etc. She listened and offered suggestions to help reach my hair goals--then we developed a care plan moving forward. Who does that? Just awesome! Everything after that was glorious. The best part? My. hair. is. fab! It's shiny, light, healthy-looking and swinging! I finally found the real thing... A salon that specializes in providing a full service high quality experience. My Salon experience was exceptional. I made my appointment the day prior with Mohammad. I was treated like a princes from the time I walked into the door until I left. My greeting was courteous and professional. The salon was bright, airy and inviting. The clients were diverse and friendly. In addition to the benefits mentioned above: - Great Products used - Kera Care, Aveda, Vitale and Mizani and tons of others were there -No waiting, 1.5 hours to complete a relaxer, style, deep conditioner and trim and style -Fantastic stylist -very personable and attentive The only negative was that I received a parking ticket upon my exit of the Salon, I forgot to add minutes to one those ridiculous Chicago meters. Overall my experience was a 5+, I received tons of compliments on my hair and I walked out without breaking the bank for beauty. I started coming to Evvy a little over a year ago. I have always had relaxed hair, which was pretty healthy, long and thick. However, my pervious salon damaged my hair, leaving it dry, brittle and extremely uneven and patchy in the back. When I first came to Van Cleef, I was in dire need of a miracle, and Evvy is just that! She started by examining my hair and we talked about possible reasons why my hair was in such bad shape: scarfs that could be breaking my hair at my shoulders, too strong relaxers, too much heat applied while blow drying, not keeping it moisturized. I was so eager to get my hair back into good shape that I agreed to do everything that she suggested, and she for sure held up to her part of the deal. I stopped wearing scarves and cross-body bags, kept my hair moisturized and made sure to come in every two weeks with enough time to let her work her magic. She used light relaxers, we did a roll and set to keep the blow drying to a minimum and she worked her amazing touch. A year later, my hair is even, past my shoulders, thick and shiny, just like she promised. I did my part, and Evvy definitely did hers. Without a doubt, Evvy is an amazing stylist who truly cares about healthy hair that lasts. I loved everything about my experience at Van Cleef. I was a new client looking to get balayage highlights done on my virgin hair, and a trim. When I called they were able to get me in two days later as a new client! My appointment was at 1:00pm. I got to the salon at about 12:50 and was in the chair with Venita by 1:02! They were so on time and didn't waste any of your time by having you sit around and forgetting you under a hairdryer. They were super attentive and my entire time there was spent actively getting my hair done, rather than waiting. My stylist was Venita, and she is like a hair angel! She really took the time to understand what I wanted and made sure I was comfortable with everything before she got started. I am natural, mid-back length hair, and don't really go to the salon much - until now, because I will definitely be back to see Venita regularly. I've gotten so many compliments on my hair color/balayage highlights already - and more importantly, it came out EXACTLY how I pictured it and hoped it would. So, I have only been here once. So, that is not enough experiences to give a 5, but after I have made a few visits I may upgrade. I am Black, so I need a hairstylist I can trust. Especially, after creating my own hair fiasco (which I apparently like to do every few years). Anyway, a friend recommended I hook up with Evvy. She was the bomb. Ok, so first, she got me in the same day. Which, to me is important as I am kind of a free spirit, particularly when it comes to style. I like to change things up and she has appointments from early morning to after 5pm. Kewl! The facility is clean and inviting. And they had such a lovely Christmas tree. To add to it, the owner stopped by to say hello and he was so pleasant. The fact that he is owner seemed like kind of an after thought. He was honestly, just checking in to say hello. Nice! Finally, Evvy has a focus on keeping things healthy. So often I have come across stylists in a frenzy to let their creative juices flow on top of my head. I am blessed with a lot of hair, but part of the reason I have had so many fiascos is precisely that reason. They love to cut me. But not Evvy, she was telling me how we should not cut it, she gave me a conservative trim that left me feeling no regret and safe enough to return to her .....today in fact. I have been going to Van Cleef for about 4 years. Danielle has been my go to stylist for all special occasions in my life (engagement, wedding, etc). As a natural hair care girl, I usually don't require many trips to the salon, but when I do, it's always Van Cleef. After a not so good hair coloring experience at another popular salon that allegedly specializes in natural hair care, I stumbled upon Van Cleef. Danielle recolored my hair "rebel red" (my trademark color) and taught me some tips and tricks for in between visits. My hair (length-wise) now hits the small of my back - and I was bold enough to switch to a honey blonde for the summer. Since I wrote my previous critique of Van Cleef...they've only WOW'd me EVEN MORE! Due to Evvy's skill in dealing with my natural locks, my hair has never been healthier! It's also grown so much longer in the past year - I've had very little breakage thanks to Evvy's care and hair tips. Every time I pass by a window or mirror I can't help but admire how fantastic my hair looks! This is coming from someone who's hair was always over processed with a relaxer, or color, or both - on top of going to stylists who put too much heat or just plain didn't know what they were doing. Suffice to say, when I came to Van Cleef, my hair was a wreck! Now I constantly get asked how I keep my hair so healthy and "who's your stylist?" After years of going to the barber shop I treated myself to a haircut at Van Cleef. Evee was my stylist, upon recommendation from a friend. I was reluctant because of the time and money that you pay in a salon. I also thought I wanted a change from my natural but Evee finally made me just accept the hair I have (which I do love) and let it grow and we'll explore options. I didn't get anything fancy, just a wash and trim, but even though I was there almost 2 hours, I left happy. I went feeling icky and left feeling like I could do a salon. I liked eavesdropping on the other clients, flipping through the magazines, and the fact that Evee and her assistant noticed my exasperated looks and assured me that they'd be with me as soon as they could. Van Cleef is the standard in hair salons! Today was the first time that I went to Van Cleef to get my hair done. I knew about the salon for many years, because my sister used to cut hair there over 15 years ago. When I called the salon to schedule my appointment I told the receptionist that I was a new client and that I wanted to get my hair cut. She informed me that she would have the salon manager call me back once he was done with his client. I received a call back from the salon manager Darryl about 20 minutes later. He asked me tons of questions so that he could pair me up with the right stylist. He recommended Danielle. Once I got to the salon I waited about 30 minutes before I was greeted by her, but once she took me back to begin doing my hair she made up for it!! She was so very nice and apologetic. She asked lots of questions and was genuinely concerned about how I wanted my hair done. I told her that I wanted a simple bob....and what I got was a SLAMMIN' BOB!!! My hair looks and feels awesome. The salon is beautiful and spacious enough to socially distance customers safely. Shampooing bowls are set up in a way that stylists are behind you while shampooing not on the side of you. Most importantly when you schedule an appointment it's really an appointment and not a wait list. You are shampooed, styled and you're out. I'm surprised at hairstylist who are still overbooking during the pandemic. The only person who should be in the salon is the person you are servicing. I was absolutely blown away by Van Cleef hair studio! I was visiting Chicago and wanted to get my hair done for New Year's Eve. I called on December 30th and they were able to schedule me for an appointment the very next day! I told them that I was a first time customer and they transferred me to the manager who took the time to ask what my needs were and then he placed me with the stylist who would be best suited to take care of my hair. I have natural hair, but am currently wearing a full sew-in weave. I wasn't sure if "just anyone" would be able to do my hair. Thankfully, since the manager took the time to ask what my needs were, he was able to pair me with a wonderful stylist (I can't believe I forgot her name!) who was very professional and totally attentive to my needs, bringing me tea and magazines. She did a wonderful job with my hair and even recommended another stylist for me to go to once I am liberated from this weave. She pointed out the stylist and told me that she is an expert in natural hair. Besides having a wonderful hairdo for New Years Eve, I have to comment on the salon itself. From the woman making the appointment, to the manager, to the staff in general - this is the most exquisite salon I've been to -- EVER! I loved it. Upon my arrival, the manager greeted me and introduced me to the owner, Rahni, who was SO incredibly welcoming and he seemed genuinely happy that I was in his salon. At the end of my service (which was a surprisingly GREAT price and took less than 2 hours), I went to Rahni to tell him how much I enjoyed the Van Cleef experience and he gave me a huge hug and told me that I am now part of the Van Cleef family! It really made me feel so welcomed and valued as a customer! I have been in dozens of Black hair salons in my life but I have NEVER been in one that was so completely professional and just absolutely beautiful. My whole experience was so exceptional that I had to take the time to write this review (even 3 weeks after the fact) ... I did not want the opportunity to pass for me to be able to say that this is definitely my new favorite salon and when I move to Chicago, this will be my spot -- without question! I rated it high because of the outstanding service. The experience is first rate. So is the owner and his staff. I had a consultation with the owner, he gave me great recommendations to get my hair healthy again. The salon is professional, clean and everything you could ask for in a salon. And the prices are reasonable. Plus, you can get manicures, etc. I loved my experience. I would not recommend this salon for natural hair styles. read more

I went to Van Cleef last week to get a relaxer. I was very nervous because I know what a bad relaxer can do to hair. It took me about 2 weeks to get up the courage to call and I'm so glad I did. I walked into a salon full of stylists who were friendly, talkative, and def knew hair. Danielle did my hair and when I need another relaxer I will def be setting up my appt with her. My hair looked awesome, it felt great - wavy, bouncy (I thought I was in a hair commercial). The only reason I'm saying this place is pricey is because I'm originally from a small city in the south and relaxers are usually around 70-80, so anything above 100 seems high. I'm still very satisfied with the service and the job done, so I think the price was worth it. I will def be back! read more

FINALLY! Ive been here for years and it recently found my ''IT SALON" they everything I wanted in and upscale urban setting! As many of us black folks know that we are NEVER on time for nothing! So the things I don't mess with is time, hair and food! My stylist was Evvy! She was FABULOUS!!! She was very polite, patient and was ON TIME! She greeted me asked if i needed any refreshments...my appointment was at 3pm and i left there at 4:30pm! shes great at time management, and she actually care about her clients hair! she gave me great shampoos and treatments to maintain my hair in between visits. I'm 21 years old and she gave me a simple yet stylist cute do. Age appropriate look. Her assistant was just as great--i LOVE the wash! My overall experience was fabulous, delightful and memorizing!!! AND for all my fellow YELPERS---i do not work there or know anyone. i am just a college student who cant afford a $100 wash/style! Hell I don't have Oprah or Tyra Banks money. I have a college student budget. The team was great from the receptionist from the assistants to just the regular customers! The atmosphere was great! NO gossip about who man is with who or the lastest whore of the week---NONE OF THAT! It was JUST SIMPLE AND HAPPY, PEACEFUL ENVIRONMENT. Well- she did it again. I have not been in to see Karin Lemon, stylist at Van Cleef, in 9 or 10 months. I have a toddler, and with natural hair I don't always see the need to come in unless I am getting my hair blown out. But Easter Sunday was coming and I wanted to look good for Jesus, he did die on the cross for me, I figure the best thing I could do was to wash up the inside and shine up the outside. Karin, text me every week, so this time I made an appointment. She always has someone she is training, a competent assistant. Since she is in high demands on Saturdays, her assistant washed and dried by hair. Of course I would rather have Karin do it, but I have grown to trust the choices she makes for me about my hair. She recommended I go natural a few years ago. It has been a crazy transition, but I am so glad I did it. I digress....Anyway, when I walked out of the salon, my hair literally looked happy. It is always thick, bouncy, smiling on my head, I got big curls. On Tuesday, four days after seeing Karin, my hair is still looking great. So great I had to give her a call and tell her, " Karin, I LOVE MY HAIR!" I think wearing it blown out actually makes it easier for me to moisturize it. I won't ever go back to the relaxer, and I feel beautiful, isn't that what it is all about; feeling good so I can meet the needs of my family. Thank you Karin, I hope to see you sooner than later.
