I had an exceptional experience in having a custom wedding ring set designed using the diamonds in my original ring. Katie, the designer, was very helpful as we came up with a beautiful design that was flattering and in good proportion on my wide fingers. After providing sketches, a wax mold was 3D printed for me to try to make sure the proportions would look good. The resulting ring is the most beautiful piece of jewelry I have ever owned. I would highly recommend Van Horne's. Prior to this job, I have often used them for jewelry and watch repairs. Very disappointed in Van Horne today. I have done business with them a few times. Took a bracelet in today to get the clasp looked at. The gentleman who repaired it did so in less than two minutes. He just tapped it couple times with a small hammer so it would clasp tightly. The lady who brought it to me charged me $10. After thinking about it, I was a little upset. I know a business needs to make money, but $10 for two minutes? That's $300 an hour. Well I was going to purchase a diamond necklace for my wife , for our anniversary. However, this time they surprised me going the extra mile in helping me out with outstanding service! On this occasion, Saturday, 2nd February I was flying into South Bend from San Francisco to surprise my girlfriend at her birthday dinner that her family was taking her out to. I was due to arrive at 4:30 pm with enough time to swing by Van Horne Jewelers, purchase and pick-up a gorgeous sapphire and white gold pendant and necklace to surprise my girlfriend with. Unfortunately, my connecting flight in Chicago was delayed due to a maintenance issue. So, while being delayed in Chicago I phoned Van Horne Jewelers, spoke with Doreen and explained my dilemma. She was understanding of my situation, excited about my girlfriend's pending surprise and willing to help me out. Well, she went above and beyond what probably most would have. I was once a customer . . . as was my son and parents. We spent a substantial amount of money at this store through the years. I stopped in a few months ago for two reasons: 1. I wanted to purchase some earrings to match a Kashmir Blue Topaz necklace. 2. I wanted to purchase a new ring or redesign for our 40th wedding anniversary. The sales woman that approached us acted like we were a bother. I asked about Kashmir Blue Topaz and she scoffed " that is not Topaz you are wearing. She said there was no such thing as Kashmir Blue Topaz. She asked if my necklace was something created by David Yurman, it was not. She walked away and left us standing at the counter. We wandered through the store and received no further service. Sadly, we were treated very poorly. We googled jewelry stores and found two in Elkhart. So we took a drive to Elkhart, Indiana. Eileen Hopman, owner at Hopman Jewelers in Elkhart put forth the time and effort to research and locate the Kashmir Blue Topaz stones that I desired. Hopman's custom-made my exquisite 8mm Kashmir Blue Topaz earrings! My 40th Anniversary ring was designed by Images Jewelers in Elkhart, Indiana. If you can imagine it . . .Images can create it! My anniversary ring exceeds my expectations. I was so impressed that I sent my Dad to Shawn at Images to purchase a beautiful ring for my Mom. Dad received superior service and Mom got an amazing ring! The rude service provided by the Van Horn sales person was a blessing in disguise. Van Horn is a bit over priced, arrogant and clearly they are not appreciative of loyal repeat customers. I decided to visit this jewelry store on the way home from work today as I am in the market for an engagement ring. I was incredibly disappointed with the lack of customer service. I spent about 5 minutes perusing the cases, taking my time. I made eye contact with both of the ladies on the floor. Neither greeted me nor addressed me. I made eye contact with the gentleman in the office. He did not greet me either. I was professionally dressed, so I doubt that my attire made me so dismissible. I was prepared to buy or discuss having a piece made. No one asked me what I was in the market for or what brought me into their business today. For my Ph.D. graduation, my aunt and uncle (who I am very close with) gave me the most BEAUTIFUL silver hoop earrings. Absolutely stunning. The sterling silver is cut so strikingly I have had people ask me if they were diamonds. I wear them all the time! They mean so much to me! LOVE LOVE LOVE. Well, I was crammed 5 girls into a hotel room at the Marriott in Philadelphia last week, and somehow one of my beloved earrings disappeared off the nightstand. We didn't have the cleaners come and we looked EVERYWHERE! So, I called Van Horne to see if they could replace the earring. Gary could not have been nicer or more helpful. He was able to look up the exact product that my aunt had purchased and was able to replace the earring for me, at cost. So happy! I'm delighted with both the product and with the customer service at Van Horne. Here is a review that I posted on google: In our experience, the employees there are great. However, the owner does not care so much for customer satisfaction. He became angry and was shaking because I wanted a refund on a couple of items that my husband had purchased. He walked away from me while I was trying to have a conversation with him. Granted, we were 10 days over the 30 day refund period, but my husband hadn't realized there was a limit on returns and had waited to give me the gifts. He then called and spoke with a woman who told him that we would be okay coming in and that they would take care of us. In all honesty, the experience was embarrassing for me and my husband. I felt bad for not liking what he had picked, and he felt stupid for being talked into spending way over his budget. In the end, the owner gave us half of our money back, but the experience was so awful we will not shop there again. On a side note, I think these other reviews sound a little phony. *EDIT* So, a little bit of back info here. I work at another retail store in the same mall as Van Horne Jewelers. During the conversation mentioned above I did tell the owner (Madison Knight, Jr.) that I also work in retail, in fact we're neighbors in business as I am in the same mall and that while I do understand the policies, there was nothing there that I really liked and would just like our money back. He refused, and at that time, I told him that I would share my experience with all of my friends and family and that I would share it on social networking sites as well. This is when he offered half of our money back. Okay, now for an update. Tonight I was at a marketing meeting for our mall, and lo and behold, there is Mr. Knight sitting across from me. The moment the meeting adjourned, Mr. Knight came around the table and immediately said to me, "You're the person who doesn't like me very much." I responded that I had been in his store recently and had had a bad experience. He jumped into how my review was not fair, that it had made it sound like he hadn't given me anything back (apparently he didn't read my review all the way?) and that all of the positive reviews were true. He was telling me that since we were "neighbors" that I shouldn't be writing bad reviews about his business. I told him that if I had had a positive experience, I wouldn't of written the negative review. I even reminded him that I had told him during my initial visit that I would post my experience everywhere, which he acknowledged. He kept telling me that the positive reviews were, in fact, not fake, and probably written by customers that he personally knows. I kept reminding him that had my experience been positive, I wouldn't have written the poor review. He finally agreed with me that he should have handled it differently and that he can get angered easily when threatened (?!). He then told me that he has two kids in college and that I was costing him business. I said that I would remove the part about the other reviews looking phony. After he left, somebody from another business came rushing up to me and asked who he was. I told her and she said, "I knew it! He ripped my sister off!" and then proceeded to tell me the entire story. Later, a friend from yet another business in the same mall, and who also knew the original story and witnessed the entire scene from the marketing meeting told me that I should absolutely not change my original review. My husband agrees. So, here is my addendum. Mr. Knight, instead of pointing at others for your lack of business, perhaps you should look at the three fingers pointing back at you. read more

My first review of a business ever... Sadly, it's not a positive one. I gave Van Horne two opportunities to earn my loyalty. First time I stopped in to get a diamond set into a new setting. This was a very nice approx. 1.75 ct. stone. It was beautiful but the color is a bit lower on the color scale. At first glance, the gentleman looked at the stone and asked me if it was moissanite. Excuse me?!? How insulting! Because I was dressed very casually, shorts/t-shirt/etc. he assumed my stone couldn't possibly be real. As one of their primary jewelers, he should have recognized a real stone especially considering the lower color range. I haven't seen a moissanite that isn't icy white. For the record, this stone was an authentic, natural GIA graded stone worth approx. $15,000. Many months later I stopped in as it was convenient and I needed a simple service that would take mere moments. I had purchased a pair of small diamond studs to wear in my second piercings. They were yellow gold and I wanted to have the rhodium dipped in white gold. I have several pieces that are rhodium dipped so I am familiar with the process. The woman who helped me, older woman who wears big/flashy jewelery, seemed to feel put-out to have to deal with such an inexpensive request. She told me "it won't last you know". Ummmmm, I'm not an expert but based on my own experience it will last quite a while. I just needed the prongs to stay white and they are on my ears so it's not as though they are exposed to significant sweat, soap, etc. Again, I was dressed casually out running errands and I clearly was judged as she looked down her nose at me. As I was under a time-crunch and didn't want to waste time going elsewhere, I had them do the job. I will not be darkening the door of Van Horne Jewelers again. I do not appreciate the condescending attitude of their employees. I am a college educated professional and certainly do not expect to be treated as though I am an inconvenience. read more

My wedding set was damaged a while ago and I couldn't make a decision on what to do. Fix the ring, get a new setting or buy something completely different? I found this to be an incredibly hard decision. We had visited several jewelers in the area and I have to say I found the experience a bit offensive. I heard several times "Your diamond is so outdated". I even had some try to tell me the diamond was not that great of quality, in hopes I am sure, this would convince me to ditch it and buy new. Yes, I understand a Marquise diamond is no longer "in" and I admit, it is not my most favorite shape diamond now but my husband spent a lot of time picking out my ring 25 yrs ago. It had a lot of sentimental value. It reminds me of all the years we cherished together and how incredibly excited he was when he proposed. What I appreciated was Van Horne understood this and gave me suggestions on how to reset the diamond into a setting that I would love. I also appreciated their honesty. The diamond was not low quality and told me exactly what it was and where it landed on the clarity chart. They also explained the thickness and how they could do a lot with it. Again, we were told from other places the diamond was "awfully thin" which wasn't true. They spent 2 hours with me going over many options. Low pressure, they wanted me to be pleased with the result, that was their main concern. They came up with the creative solution of setting the marquise diamond into a setting I really liked, which was meant for a princess or radiant cut, (my preferred shape diamond). I could have the updated look of a "square" stone but creatively set the Marquise instead. I feel this is what makes my ring very special. Upon first look, the ring appears to be one shape but upon closer inspection, it is indeed the marquise. All the memories are in tact and I appreciate how unique it is. Thank you. read more

Last month my Mother was gravely ill at Dujarie House at Holy Cross Village. The staff noticed her fingers were swelling and needed her rings cut off. They contacted Van Horne's to cut the rings and the price quoted was $150.00. We, and the staff, were all shocked at the outrageous price since it is only 8 miles from the store. I recently purchased a custom engagement ring at Van Horne Jewelers, and I could not be happier with how the ring turned out and with my ring-buying experience. Kelly, Madison, and the rest of the staff were incredibly helpful and delivered on the promise of a beautiful ring at a great price. Kelly worked with me as I visited van Horne about 6 times over a month to get the stone and ring that I wanted. My fiancee and I had looked at rings off and on for nearly 2 years, and we had a hard time finding anything that she loved. We went and looked at Van Horne, and they had a ring from a designer that was close to what she wanted. She really liked many of its features but wanted a few details to be different if it were to fit what she had (finally!) figured out that she wanted. During this experience, our salesperson at Van Horne was incredibly helpful and patient as my fiancee tried on about 10 different rings. I knew that Van Horne could do custom work, so a few weeks later I went back without my fiancee and basically said "I want this ring, but with these changes." I was helped by Kelly, and she said they could order the band and then put in a different mounting for me. I decided to move forward and look at loose stones with Van Horne as well. They had a great selection of high-quality stones within my budget. I narrowed it down to two or three that I really liked during this visit, but I asked if I could compare these stones to a few others. So, Kelly ordered up 3 or 4 similar stones in my price range from their vendors, and I went back a week later to keep looking. Kelly patiently let me mull over the choices for hours, and when I asked to keep looking, she was perfectly kind and helpful. In fact, she found a stone they had recently purchased that was similar in quality but larger in size, yet it also fit into my budget because they had gotten a great deal on it themselves. I ended up going for it and was incredibly happy that I did. I should note, as well, that Kelly and Madison worked very hard to give me a great deal, and Kelly was insistent that I NOT go over budget and made sure I was completely comfortable with what I was paying. This is very different from my experience with the larger jewelry chains, which tried to force me into buying before I was ready. Meanwhile, Kelly learned that the ring I wanted could not be ordered as just a shank with a separate mounting because the ring was made by a specialty designer. No problem, Kelly and the goldsmiths told me they could make a cast from the ring I liked and literally make the entire thing for me. I had Kelly order a few mountings to look at as well. I didn't like any of those, so I asked for a few more. All the while, Kelly and the staff were incredibly gracious. Finally, I found a mounting that I thought would be exactly what I wanted, though it's hard for a non-jeweler to really visualize. The goldsmiths worked with me on what would look best and what would be most sturdy for holding the diamond. I was nervous about it, but I gave them the green light. I also needed the ring finished in a pretty quick turnaround after all of this looking and indecision on my part. The goldsmiths did an absolutely wonderful job, and the ring turned out better than I could imagine. Van Horne finished the ring a few days earlier than they planned, and I was blown away with how great the final product looked. Most importantly, my fiancee absolutely loves her ring. We will definitely go back for our wedding bands and all our jewelry needs as long as we live in the Michiana area. read more

Im a single woman in my forties very down to earth and spending money on myself is something I very seldom do. I had been a customer of "another" area jewlery store for over 20 years - Due to a terrible chain of events with my ring - I decided to see what Vanhornes could do for me - And BOY OH BOY AM I EVER GLAD I DID !!! Earlier this year I had taken a very sentimental diamond band ring and seperate stone into their establishment to have the stone placed onto/inside the center of the diamond band ring. (both the stone and the ring were extremely sentimental to me and my goal was to keep the ring as it was but yet adding this stone to it) This is when my nightmare started I had been in and out of that store over ten times for numerous issues - each time my ring was getting worse and worse with each attempt to have them "FIX" what they had done the time before. I was sick - the beautiful ring I brought into their store was now a mess - dents, waves, gouges,nicks pits and finally a broken stone - I had sold every peice of jewelry ever owned to originally pay to have this stone placed on this ring and I had nothing more to give - because all of the damage (cover ups) that was done by their jewler I asked if they would take responibilty for this damage and redo my ring - start all over - they said no - that I should of never expected perfection since I had asked to have the ring changed and finally, they would be more then happy to place a new stone in my ring at no charge BUT I would have to buy a stone first - and that would not be cheap - This is when I went into Vanhornes - I was depleated - emotional and angry - I placed my once beautiful ring on the counter - I was first greeted by Bill and I explained my story -he waited patiently as explained what had been done to the ring - I showed pictures of what it once looked like before all of this happened - Bill let me vent and cry as I explained my 8 month ordeal. He called Kevin out to the counter who looked the ring over and together they explained what my options would be and then i asked them about doing what I had never ever imagined I would do - Have them melt my ring down and start all over - customizing a brand new ring / minus a center stone. Bill and Kevin never blinked an eye -they jumped right on the new idea They communicated with me thru phone and email - they bent over backwards throwing themselves into the possibilities of creating a brand new one of a kind ring for me - These two guys worked with me for over an hour we found a style I loved then Bill would take my ideas and create a ring - a few days went by and Bill sent me a computerized image of what he created and my ring was starting to take form - after my approval he went on to create the wax mold (a wax replica of what my ring would like like) which was a fantastic feature to be able to physically try on a mold of the ring BEFORE they actually begin. Then Dec 22 I got the call that my ring was ready !!! I have never written a Yelp review but I feel that Van Horne needs to be properly represented to clients who are looking for a jewler and so I want to share this company, and more improtantly, the people that make up the company, mean to me. Today while at work, i received a carefully wrapped box....under all the bubble wrap was the special periwinkle box I get excited over each time I unwrap one. I opened it to see my three rings which they have tacked together for me sparking and ready to wear. These three rings are very special to me...I had received each ring as a separate present from my dad...the first band of diamonds as a christmas gift, the second band as a graduation gift when I graduated from Notre Dame, and the third band as a 22nd birthday gift right before I moved away from home to start my career. A diamond had recently fallen out and when I went home in October, I stopped in to see everyone that works there that have come to know my entire faimily and gave them my broken ring. Not only did they fix it, but they sent it to me (which I had expected I wouldn't get it back until Christmas). I called June as soon as I opened the box! This place has been so amazing to my family. I remember as a little girl going in to their old location and helping my dad pick out stones and settings for a beautiful ring for my mom. I remember when I first got to open my very own gift from my dad that he had carefully selected at Van Horne. Every time my mother, my sister, or myself receive this little box, we know that my dad has spent hours picking out something specifically for us. and everyday when I look down and notice an item that I am wearing (like the rings that I am currenly wearing) or when I receive a compliment about one of the peices...I think of my father and the people that have grown to be friends that helped pick it out for me. The main requirement here was that my wife loves her rings and that was a complete success. We went to Van Horne because Dan does such a great job on our jewelry (repairs, additions to other jewelry, etc...) and we've been going to Van Horne for those services for years. This was our first occasion to have a piece of jewelry custom made and we absolutely love it. Having jewelry custom made was more expensive than buying something out of the case but it was well worth the additional price since the quality was that much greater. We chose a beautiful sapphire first and then went to work on the setting. Both Dan and Bill worked on the setting and it came out amazing. We had several concept meetings with them to rework any items that we wanted or that they thought would add or detract from the ring. We are both very happy with the level of service we received, the quality of the workmanship, and the quality of the materials. By pure accident I stumbled upon Van Horne and discovered they we practically local. With a bit of trepidation the wife and I brought in our designs. We had expected that they wouldn't be able to do it as that was the case with other places I had tried before. We spoke with Bill Martin, a designer and artist by every right, and when we showed him the designs he was excited and eager to do it. My wife and I were so impressed with Bills enthusiasm that we agreed to have him make our rings. We couldn't have picked a better person. Bill's attention to detail and his ability to see our vision of the rings was astounding. Through out the whole process we got to see the rings take shape and when we saw the finished product we were virtually speechless. They looked amazing, better than we could have imagined.
