Two side of our house needed siding replaced due to construction flaws and water intrusion. We chose SFW Construction based on their Angies List recommendations. The workers were very skilled, they knew exactly what they needed to do, explained everything to us every step of the way. This is painful work for a homeowner: it is slow, noisy, invasive, and very very expensive. It took over three weeks to do two sides of our tall skinny house, and we spent about 10% of the purchase price of the house on the repairs. Painful, as I said. Very happy with the work and the people who did the work. 5 stars for that. I took one star off because they recommended SFW Painting to paint our house, and if you read my review of that company, doubt may creep into your mind as to whether you should do business with SFW. I can say that SFW Construction did a good job, and they were very good people to work with.

During a roof replacement, dry rot was identified in two second-story dormer window sills (~25-30…read moreft up, difficult access). I contacted SFW Company, which sent a representative who proposed accessing the area via the roof using boards already in place from the roofing crew. He and I spoke directly with the roofers and asked them to leave those boards in place for that purpose. I agreed to that plan. The next day, that approach was changed on-site by a supervisor without prior discussion. This raises a basic question: why send someone to evaluate the job who does not have the authority or knowledge to accurately define the work plan and access? Instead, three workers (billed at $125/hour each) spent essentially the entire day setting up two ladders with a plank between them, including fastening into my newly installed shingles. The total came to $3,000 for the day just for the labor, with very limited actual repair work completed (partial shingle removal on one dormer). The company also charges for worker break times, stating in writing that their 2 breaks must be paid by home owner due to "Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)." As a homeowner, I found this unusual--I have not previously been billed for contractor break time. Additionally, while lead paint procedures were initiated (notice on the home entry and paperwork), the containment method discussed was not implemented. Overall, this hourly model--combined with a last-minute change in approach--while lucrative for SFW is not economical for the homeowner and does not incentivize efficiency. Spending a full day on ladder setup with minimal progress was difficult to justify. I discontinued the project after the first day (additional $1781.25 charged to remove the set up!--3 men at $125 per hour ($375 per hour) adds up quickly).

I went to James Hardie's website and searched for contractors that are designated as Elite Preferred. ACAE popped up and had impeccable reviews. Starting with the sales person, Joe, he thoroughly explained what they would do for me. He was knowledgeable and personable. There was absolutely no pressure whatsoever. The bid was higher than the others but after researching (ACAE) and speaking with Joe, I was convinced they were the company for me. In this case, you really get what you pay for. I was introduced to Josh, the Project Manager. Once again, very knowledgeable and personable. Very easy to work with and communicated with me on a daily basis. When problems cropped up, he was always there to offer suggestions on how to proceed. His crew, led by Nikolay with Rosty and Eugene, did amazing work. The workmanship is impeccable; the crew was very organized and professional. They always made the worksite safe and clean; leaving everything spotless when they left at the end of the day. I can't emphasize enough the quality of their work. It was just beautiful. The paint crew, led by Vladimir, once again did unbelievable work; totally transforming the appearance of an already exquisite job. Although color decisions were ultimately mine, Vladimir was always willing to offer a suggestion as to which color to use on a particular area. (I had selected four colors for the primary on the house, secondary for the house, trim and the doors.) These individuals collectively transformed my house (a basic ranch) into a home that I am proud to show off. In summation, I would highly recommend A Cut Above Exteriors if you want premium quality work on your home. You can probably get a siding job done cheaper but I truly believe you get what you pay for. There is nothing I can say negatively about the experience from the initial walk around with Joe, the actual installation with Josh, Nikolay, Rosty and Eugene and finally the painting with Vladimir and his crew. She confirmed our appointment for the bid, even sending me a picture of Matt beforehand so I'd know who to expect, then sent me many informational guides, forms, receipts, etc. throughout the process. She never missed a beat and was so understanding and helpful while I tried to choose paint colors - helping out where my colorblind husband could not! Our house turned out to be a rotten mess with no insulation beneath the original siding, and Matt and his crew really problem solved to help us get it fixed without going too far out of our budget. Hired this company as part of a state home modification so unfortunately could not fire them part…read moreway through. $22,000 for ceiling removal with asbestos abatement, sound dampening and a new soffit. It was weeks of trying to avoid doing contractual work, add fees, calling me names, hanging up the phone on me before the first crew finally walked off of the job in front of the company owner. No apology provided to me, but after significant negotiation they did agree to hire a subcontractor to fix their work. Unfortunately this meant that they sanded their texture work and did not seal the ductwork first and refused to put up plastic in the doorway. I had to put up plastic and then spent 30 hours cleaning my home once I figured out what the air quality issue was. I have a disability and am prone to respiratory infections which is what I was diagnosed with following this event. The new crew told me that the soffit the previous crew built was too crooked to fix but I wouldn't notice it. They decided that they completed the project and the problem was the ductwork underneath the soffit. They want thousands more to replace my ductwork and build a new soffit. I cannot find their electrical license online although they did electrical work. The light fixture they installed will not turn off and they will not hire an electrician to fix their work. This was supposed to be a home modification project to help my disabled son--a fact that they have had no regard for throughout the project.

There is considerable damage to both the new flooring they installed and my existing flooring. They also were supposed install "custom trim" around my fireplace.. and it looks like a 5 year old did it (see attached pic). I contacted them immediately and they basically ghosted me and have not bothered to even come look at the shoddy work that was done. I'm in the process of filing a claim against them with the Oregon CCB. I also contacted their insurance company but they have a clause written into their insurance policy that doesn't cover their work!?!....How convenient for them.....Ruin someone's house then ghost them. I don't know how they are still in business !!
