If I could sum up my experience (a complete siding job with James Hardie fiber cement siding) with A Cut Above Exteriors (ACAE) in one word it would be professional. This is an example of what dealing with any contractor should be. After much research I had decided to install the Hardie siding. I wanted to use a contractor who was familiar with the product and installed to James Hardie criteria and specifications. I went to James Hardie's website and searched for contractors that are designated as Elite Preferred. ACAE popped up and had impeccable reviews. Starting with the sales person, Joe, he thoroughly explained what they would do for me. He was knowledgeable and personable. There was absolutely no pressure whatsoever. The bid was higher than the others but after researching (ACAE) and speaking with Joe, I was convinced they were the company for me. In this case, you really get what you pay for. I was introduced to Josh, the Project Manager. Once again, very knowledgeable and personable. Very easy to work with and communicated with me on a daily basis. When problems cropped up, he was always there to offer suggestions on how to proceed. His crew, led by Nikolay with Rosty and Eugene, did amazing work. The workmanship is impeccable; the crew was very organized and professional. They always made the worksite safe and clean; leaving everything spotless when they left at the end of the day. I can't emphasize enough the quality of their work. It was just beautiful. The paint crew, led by Vladimir, once again did unbelievable work; totally transforming the appearance of an already exquisite job. Although color decisions were ultimately mine, Vladimir was always willing to offer a suggestion as to which color to use on a particular area. (I had selected four colors for the primary on the house, secondary for the house, trim and the doors.) These individuals collectively transformed my house (a basic ranch) into a home that I am proud to show off. I had a great experience working with A Cut Above on a pretty big exterior remodel of my house. The overall project included new windows, asbestos abatement, new siding, and painting. From initial consult to final walkthrough, they were communicative, professional, and fair. I would highly recommend paying extra to have them project manage for you, especially if you are working with multiple vendors like I did (chose my own window company). The work and paint crews led by Anatoliy and Valerio did a stellar job working with my unique and wonky 1948 bungalow. I would leave a review of 10 starts, if I could. A Cut Above Exteriors completed the replacement of my roof, windows and siding on my home in NE Portland in 2017 and they were great. The quality of work was fantastic and the level of customer service was A+. I am now in the middle of selling my house and there was a minor issue that came up during inspection on the gutters. They sent out somebody on THAT SAME DAY and had their subcontractor that installed the gutters address the issue THE NEXT DAY. Not only did they quickly resolve this minor issue, but they reminded me that I had a warranty on the work that was transferable to the buyer, which was a valuable negotiating tool. The entire experience was great from start to finish. All of the crew were extremely professional, thorough and very cautious with regards to being COVID safe. My old roof was in dire need of replacement, it had soooo many issues and the Project Mgr; Randy was very detailed and upfront with all the work that needed to be done as well as possible additional damage. We contracted with them for a residing and roofing project. The quality of their work is a solid 4-5 stars. Quality of communication is a mediocre 2-3 stars. Manager was fine, but he did not make it clear at all he expected us to manage the window installers, engineering, and permitting process. Normal for the industry sadly. And while it didn't cause us major issues, for someone less familiar with construction and permitting it easily could have. The accounting for costs is obfuscated, no real line item breakdown for costs or hours. Also not unusual for the industry unfortunately. Estimating backwards from the total, it looks like their materials markup is about 100%, and their hourly on site seems to be between $100 and $125 per hour. Above average, but reasonable on the whole. 4 stars. Relevant as our project went over budget by about 25%. A bit over our expectations. And while some of the costs were understandable (the engineering firm signed off on plans with far more supports than expected or needed on a single story wall rebuild), there was no breakdown as to what the overcharge went to and why. Unfortunately, again, industry norms here. We were expecting 20% because of known possible dry rot. The extra from the engineering firm deciding an exterior single story wall needed 10 inch engineered wood supports across the top of the wall easily accounts for the extra. 4 stars overall. They're pricier than average, but their costs expectations were communicated informally ahead of time reasonably within expectations. All told, they would have walked with a 3 or 4 star review overall. Being expensive when contractors are scarce across the board is perfectly normal. And being terrible at billing and accounting is sadly normal in the industry. The reason for the 1 star review is the financing company they refer their customers to is extraordinarily predatory. Green Skye. It is one of those fly by night loan companies with a "0%" interest rate for the first year if you pay it off before the first year is up. If you don't surprise lump sum charges equal to almost 50% of the total financing if you are so much as a day late. And if you want to ask them for clarification, it is outright impossible to contact them until they are suing you. Their auto attendant on the phone is designed to never let you reach a person. They are a glorified payday loan company. We are in the fortunate position of being able to pay it off whenever we want. Someone not in that position could be looking at a literal bankruptcy as surprise fees in the 5 digit or higher range could easily be levied. On general principle, I will always leave a 1 star review for contractors that work with these financing companies period. It is unethical. It should be illegal. It should always be called out as the scam it is. And A Cut Above Exteriors enables it. Shame on them. read more

A Cut Above Exteriors completely replaced the siding on my house and shed in November 2021, and I can't praise the company and its employees enough! Josh, my project manager, is everything a project manager should be: extremely skilled, on top of the project at all stages, communicative, responsive, and very kind (the last asset sadly lacking today in our world). The crew, Nickolay and Dmitriy, are very hardworking, careful, prompt, and helpful--and they surprised me in the best possible way by finishing the project early! During the project, the crew discovered some dry rot under the existing siding and took care of it with a very reasonable time-and-expenses fee (this approach was made clear to me early on). In addition, they solved some other problems I wasn't even aware of: repaired some window frames that had been installed incorrectly; added some 2x4s to the inside walls of the shed to make it more stable; replaced two of the posts on my front porch; and repaired an outdoor electrical outlet, among other items. I am so grateful that Josh, Nickolay, and Dmitri really treated my home as though it were their own! A Cut Above Exteriors came highly recommended to me, and I certainly see why. This is our second big job with A Cut Above Exteriors. We had siding replaced a few years back (the work was very well done and service was professional in all ways (I am an architect and know what I am talking about)). So this year it was time to replace our 32 year old cedar shingle roof. We got two estimates and ACAE was in correct range. We went with ACAE abased on their prior performance nd being in the right price range. Our sales POC Bill McDermott and project manager Randy Gardener were both great communicators who kept us updated on activities and telling us what to expect. They were very helpful in helping us pick the correct shingles. We had some family plans that would have conflicted with the roofing and Randy accommodated our needs by adjusting their start date. Then the work started with the actual workers, Rodrigo, Brahyam, & Claudio, who were super nice, super hard-working and cooperative. They finished in the predicted time by showing up every day and working full days. It should be noted our roof is very high, steep and large. Had this company out to estimate a fairly simple job, had great rapport with the nice sales person they sent out. But then never heard from them again. Wouldn't return emails or calls. No idea what happened but this is unprofessional. Have since hired someone else who is glad for the job and was responsive after coming out to see what it entailed. Our budget was not huge, but it wasn't unrealistic with some tweaks to our wish list. Replaced my roof and gutters. Roof replacement went well and was done in the expected time frame. The project manager communicated well with us and went out of his way to quickly rectify the minor hiccups that occurred. Grade A-. The gutter replacement did not go as well. They did not replace one downspout because it was deemed unnecessary. They did not discuss this with me in advance and then "forgot" to cap the hole in the ground that remained from the old downspout. There was also an electrical line which they didn't run behind the downspout. This seemed sloppy to me. These problems were rectified, but there was little communication as to when they were planning to do this. Other than these issues, we have no complaints and the quality of the workmanship seems good. Grade B. read more

What to say about A Cut Above Exteriors? A year ago I wanted an estimate to have a metal roof put on my home replacing my shingle version. Out of three different companies, A Cut Above Exteriors gave me an estimate of over 25 grand for the project by far the highest and compared to another company who was under 15 grand for their bid, why do I need to pay an extra ten grand profit to them? Why does it cost $25,000 to put a metal roof on a house no bigger than 1500 square feet? Also, the old sales tactic of metal prices are going to go up soon so you better hurry is a bunch of crap. Even more than a year later, I've received at least three separate calls from them about trying to get me to go with them. The first time I honestly told them I had to wait financially but they seem to keep calling. Great from start to finish. I had siding replaced and a roof vent installed. In addition I had cedar corbels installed. I had several companies come out and give an estimate. Bill, a salesman from A Cut Above, presented a line by line estimate that detailed all work. The amount of time they put into the estimate was above and beyond compared to ever other company. costs were broken down by each line item. Other companies estimates were simply "Replace Siding - $X". Sam, our project manager, was great. He communicated dates, worked around our schedule, and continued to check on his crew throughout the process. Any issue that came up along the way was dealt with immediately. He never gave the typical "Oh don't worry about that, it's not a big deal" answer. No matter what the concern he was there with a solution. Finally the work crew was incredible. They were extremely fast and always kept the work site clean and professional. Not once was there a mess left behind. I had watched A-Cut-Above install a new roof and siding on a neighbor's house. I was amazed at the work-ethic I observed and the absolute attention to detail. I literally wrote myself a note so I would know who to call in the future. The future arrived, and it was time for a new roof of my own. I called A-Cut-Above. Bill, our estimator arrived and I quickly received a bid that I found completely fair. Bill offered many suggestions, that I appreciated. The job was scheduled for a few weeks out, but I got a call saying they could fit me in earlier, so I took it. Everything that was done by the company was methodical. A drop-box arrived, right on schedule, the roofing arrived right on schedule, and the workers arrived at about 7:30 and worked tirelessly throughout the week. The entire job took about 4 days. Each day the workers cleaned up, and the project manager, Randy, would check in with me. Before and after pictures were provided to me, showing where the roofing anchors were, etc. My experience was exceptional. I set up an appointment for an estimate for siding. I told them at that time I'm selling my house and think it will need siding before selling. When they called for a confirmation the day before I informed him we had a house showing and what time they would have to be done by. He then told me he didn't think I would want to put "high end siding" on my house if I'm selling it and that there is no point to send his guys 3 hours down to me (woodburn) if we were not actually getting siding. So he canceled the appointment. I told him that's silly that how can we know if we want to go through with the project without knowing how much it would cost. I felt like he didn't care to do the project at all. He called it "high end" a few times so I don't know if he thinks we don't have the money for the job or what but I know we'll never use their service for any job. :/ read more

I've hired A Cut Above for several jobs over the past few years. Yes, they are expensive, but I would still hire them again for my next big job that requires long-term support. Here is why: - Sales process: Josh Robertson is a completely down-to-earth, problem-solving guy who knows the industry. He has literally spent hours with me to help me brainstorm and plan my projects, and to do what he can to work with me on price. The time he has spent on brainstorming alone is above and beyond. I felt like I was talking to a good friend who cared about my house. I trust him. - Delivery: I have had two project managers oversee my different projects. Rob Colson and Peter Bretz have been nothing but professional and dedicated. On my projects, they have kept me informed of the plan, adjustments needed, things that didn't go as planned, and how they were going to fix them. Yes, there were problems, especially with my siding job. I have had a few subcontractors through them who I was unhappy with. But, A Cut Above was 100% responsive to my feedback. I have never had to make a stink about the problems that occurred, because these PMs took the initiative to put a mitigation plan in place before I had a chance to get upset. I can honestly say that I feel that Peter and Rob have gone above and beyond to ensure I was happy with the quality of work they provided. They also were cool enough to take photos of unrelated problems on my house that there is no way I would have been able to spot on my own, while they were up on the ladders, enabling me to take advantage of chimney warranties and other types of repairs that other providers were responsible for. They have followed up on my jobs even while they were on vacation. Above and beyond. - Customer Service: On some of the earlier projects, small things failed over time (gutter leaks, etc) and they have always immediately resolved the problems without giving me a hard time. You can save money by hiring independents on smaller jobs that don't need the long-term support. But I feel that the extra money is totally worth it on roof, siding, painting, and other things that you may need followup on years later - A Cut Above will much more likely still be in operation, as opposed to the independent who might have retired to Arizona within a few years. I only wish the price was a bit less. They really are not cheap, but I don't hesitate to recommend them and I would definitely hire them again if I had to do any of it over again. read more

a cut above put new siding on our home in 2005 shortly after we purchased it. i remember it being a fine experience and the work was good. the staff we dealt with was professional enough and straight forward in their communication. WT* has happened since then???? i called A Cut Above's phone number and gave them my info to get an estimate on a front door replacement. yet every time they called me back they would say "this is so-and-so from anderson windows". and almost everyone who called me was in a call center, probably not even in oregon. and i can tell, i used to work in a call center. then they start giving me the old "will all the DECISION MAKERS be in the house" routine a la empire carpets. at that point i just cancelled the appointment. someone needs to advise whatever dinosaur is running the sales department that they need to wise up to the fact that educated gen x-ers and millennials aren't going to fall for this Glen Gary Glen Ross routine they are attempting to pull over there. in fact they called me again today, i assume to try and get another appointment with me. but they didn't leave a voice mail, i had to call the number back to find out who it was. The original crew had one guy who spoke english, the rest spoke no english. I'd come home from work and there was less siding installed than when I left for work. Our siding was combed/finger-jointed cedar and no one knew what angle of joint cut to make. It was face nailed not using ring shank nails (they say now that ring shank weren't required) and using an overlap of 3/8" on a 5 3/8" siding board (the contract stated 8" boards and installers usually use at least a 1" overlap). For years the nails have been popping out and when windows were recently replaced, we discovered the smaller siding boards and dry rot in the plywood and studs. The window installers, a very good company, told us that the siding was not properly sealed around the windows. The house was painted shortly after the siding install, so many problems did not show until years after the original the work was completed.
