My husband and I were finally able to check this place out. I'm from Brooklyn, NY, so when I asked locally where to go to get a good deli sub, everyone said Vanellis, so I was very excited. The quality of cold cuts is good, but the amount of filling (meat, cheese and veg) to bread is crazy. The bread is probably the best bread we have had in Memphis when it comes to subs, however, it was nothing like the bread back in NY or like any actual Italian bread I've ever had. It's more so a very soft type bread. None of that crunchy outer layer with a soft and pillowy inside that makes us all love deli subs so much up North. If you're looking for a good place for cold cuts, this is one of them. However, you'll be better off just going to Kroger for Boars Head because the prices here are $15-20 per LB for meats and I believe $9-10 per LB for cheeses. Overall, the subs were fine. Nothing special. Definitely not what I expected when being told this was like the deli subs we grew up eating. If you're from up north and are looking for a hero or roll like back home, keep looking. This isn't it.

Nice little Italian deli. Pretty authentic...I had to look up what some items were! The staff was friendly and helpful with just a touch of impatience for those of us with questions. I got the Ami. It was tasty. They had a fun selection of chips with some unusual flavors I hadn't seen before. We enjoyed that. The place was very busy.

Great deli!!! Popped in for lunch and we were definitely happy with that decision. There is some inside seating and some outside seating, not a lot of either though so it's possible you could end up there with no place to sit but we had a few places from which to choose so, clean living I guess. There were a few people ahead of us in line but the line moved pretty quickly. Employees were friendly and able to answer questions we had. We got an Ami, a spicy roast beef, an Italian sausage grandmama style, and a club. The sandwiches were all very good and there was a good selection of chips as well. I'll definitely come back here to try some more of the menu items.

Just a nice, a-ok sandwich place. The workers are really friendly and are happy to help people out. I've never been so they recommended me their most popular sub and said usually people work their way down the list as they return. Unfortunately, I'm not a big sandwich person so I can't see myself coming back. Again, friendly service, but the food was just ok. Ok: - Sandwich: #1 The 'Ami Disliked: - Dessert: Cannoli

The bread is fresh, the garlic mayo is delicious and the meats are top notch. I always get the #1 or #2 or #3. They are all delicious.

I've eaten there once. Food was good enough, but not memorable and it did not draw me back.

The Reuben was slightly less substantial but what it lacked in size was made up for in taste. The tasty corned beef, sauerkraut, and sauce was on a soft marble rye, beautiful blending of flavors. However, until I ordered and ate, the whole experience was a little frustrating. We are traveling and like to support kosher establishments. We did the research, seemed like they were open, we tried calling to confirm without any luck.... We even left multiple messages, as advised on their outgoing message. So when we arrived I saw the restaurant, knocked on the door, saw someone inside that I believe saw me, but still no luck. I joined the relatively long line of folks at the reception desk where I was told to just knock on the door of the restaurant. The receptionist called to the restaurant to tell them I was there. Then I placed my order with a nice person and the good food came out quickly. It's only take out which is fine. Too bad the process was so frustrating.

It is in inside the Memphis Jewish Home and Rehab off of Walnut grove near Forest Hill Irene. It is definitely a place the patients eat with the family members during visitation. I ordered the meat loaf that was soaked in a hearty slightly sweet tomato gravy--delicious! The green beans were really good and the mashed potatoes were really thick like I prefer and a rich buttery taste like granny's! I also had a slice of apple pie that was really good with slight firm apples and a doughy crust that was great. I will return for another Sunday special soon.

This is one of those Memphis spots that has a laid back atmosphere and plenty of character as soon as you walk through the door. I really liked the setup inside, especially the pool tables, old signs, and overall neighborhood bar and deli feel. For lunch, I went with the chicken sandwich and homemade fries. The chicken was seasoned well, had a nice grilled flavor, and was a good size for the sandwich. Everything tasted fresh, and I liked having the lettuce, tomato, pickles, and peppers to go along with it. It was simple, but done right. The homemade fries were really good too. They had plenty of seasoning and tasted like they were actually made in house instead of just being your typical frozen fries. They went perfectly with the chicken sandwich, and the portion was more than enough for lunch. Service was good during our visit, and we were able to sit down, eat, and enjoy lunch without feeling rushed. It was a nice place to get away from work for a little bit and grab some food with the guys. Overall, I really enjoyed my first experience here. Good food, good portions, a cool atmosphere, and a place that feels uniquely Memphis. I would definitely come back again, especially to try some of the other sandwiches and appetizers on the menu.
