Eat Local: Try the meatball sub. A half will do as they include chips. The meatballs are really good and you can taste that they are homemade fresh. I added a drink to make my total just over $10. If you are really hungry you'll want the whole but your price will jump more than you'd like to spend on a meatball sandwich. Love this place! I moved from midtown, and was so sad that I wouldn't have a good Italian deli. I stumbled across Vanelli's, and fell in love. I recommend, well everything! My favorite is the brisket sandwich, which they only sell on Saturdays. Be warned though, they sell out early. Their pasta salad is amazing, as is their Italian spinach. Nice little spot to be served a deli sandwich the quality of which I would expect from a 13 year old. A LOT of "get it yourself" going on. I understand this is a "family run" business but trimming back on the amount of meat/cheese; having VERY limited selection, tired lettuce, sad tomatoes, unidentifiable spreads, making me fetch my own simple items is ridiculous when you like a the the amount you just paid. Just a modest increase in quality of breads, broader deserts (hit up Costco like other family run places do) and a napkin holder that's been cleaned and refilled wouldn't hurt or kill profits. read more

Delicious sandwiches any way you like it. They roast their own pastrami and roast beef. The olive salad (like a relish) is amazing. They have toppings like grated carrots. If you visit Vanelli's Deli. You have to try to the Meatball sandwich. WOW!!! it was delicious. This sandwich is made with big homemade meatballs! This afternoon I was out in Germantown and had to urgently find a place with wifi. I stopped in to Vanelli's for about 20 minutes. The wifi was fast. The deli itself was very bare-bones, though. It seems like a basic family operation, with a big kitchen, and several cafe style tables & chairs. No decor or fancy anything. But that's okay. For $8 I was able to get a bowl of tuna salad and pimento cheese respectively, on beds of lettuce + tomato. Tuna salad was the winner. Also, the owner is an adorable goofball who came up to me, looked at my computer, asked me what I was doing, and said that I better not be looking at any nasty sites. LOL. read more

Went to Vanelli's during lunch with a coworker. We were greeted with a smile by the lady behind the counter. Being my first time, I asked her what she would recommend, and she recommended the "Ami" sandwich. I ordered the "whole" sandwich and she kept saying that it was huge serving. It was, and could easily be split by two (around same size as a Lenny's monster sandwich). I got the combo (whole sandwich, chips, and drink). It was a little pricey, but trying a new place I didn't mind so much. The sandwich was really good. My coworker and I both agreed that the meat, the toppings, and the Italian mayo made the sandwich. I have never had a sandwich with such freshness. The bread was pretty good as well. I will definitely be back. There is a decent amount of seating and they have a TV playing ESPN. My family and I have been loyal customers for many years. I, however, will never, ever return!! The owner, I assume, was rude, obnoxious, condescending and irresponsible. Never in my 50 years of life have I seen an owner so disrespectful and unappreciative to a loyal customer. My 90 year old mother was not happy either. She is the reason I visited this place so many times in the first place. Everyone has always been so nice, receptive and helpful at the deli. Not this time. I purchased two pounds of ham a few days ago. The most disgusting tasting and looking ham I have ever seen in my life. You could not even see the meat because there was so much fat. My mother called me to return it. I live neither near my mother nor vanelli's, but who can say no to a 90 year old mother when she calls? I did not hesitate because my mother observed the ham first, and she (being the woman who has lived 90 years, birthed and raised 8 children, and seen most everything there is to see) called me to pick it up from her house and return it. She was so disappointed and unhappy with her "favorite deli." We anticipated no problems when returning the bad quality ham to Vanelli's Deli. Again, I assume the owner (a man with his arm in a sling), saw the ham, raised up his arms and said, "I can't be responsible for how much fat is on the ham." I said that is all well and good but you cannot even find the meat there is so much fat. I have never returned lunch meat in my 50 years of life keep in mind. The owner continued, "I agree it has an unusually high amount of fat compared to what we usually serve, but I can't do anything about that." Ok. That is all well and good, but don't you appreciate the loyalty of customers who have visited your establishment for numerous years? Apparetnly not. Don't you want to provide a high quality product, so customers will return and other new customers will follow? Apparently not. Don't you believe in your loyal customers and stand behind what you sell and provide? Apparently not. The owner continued, "we get that ham from Canale. If you have a problem with it you will have to take it up with them." What the hell? Yes, wth? No owner, you TAKE IT UP WITH CANALE! YOUR BUSINESS IS WITH CANALE. MY BUSINESS IS WITH YOU! GROW SOME BALLS AND GROW UP! I left the entire two pounds of ham. Vanelli's Deli had a successful day yesterday I guess, thanks to the owner. They got my $25 for two pounds of ham! They got to keep the ham! They lost a loyal customer forever! And they could not care less! I will move on to Lucchesis or another deli forever now. The customer is not always right at Vanelli's Deli even when he is definitely right! A young man was training behind the counter while this drama unfolded. I wanted so badly before I left to tell him not to listen to anything this idiot owner says to him. The owner's advice is most likely ridiculous or directionless. Btw Vanelli's- I was on the way to celebrate the life of my 36 year old nephew who unexpectedly died. Thanks for ruining that for me and my mother also! Always great. It's that quaint, classic Italian place down the block but better. So much variety, yet everything I've had has been good. Good quality meats, has hot foods and sammies. If you're looking for a sub, get the 'ami- super fresh, Italian dressing is A+. The people are great too and you can tell they like what they do. The ravioli is good. And you can buy meats by the pound- get the Canale's ham it's very local and VERY delicious. Oh and they have that awesome "pebbly" ice. read more

I'm typically not a deli-sub kind of gal because of my limited tolerance of condiments and raw veggies, but Vanelli's is an exception to that rule. All my Vanelli's experience (one takeout and two dine-in) have involved the Hoagie Club sans tomato, onion, and mayo. The meat is so fresh-tasting and flavorful, I really don't miss all the toppings. The bread is delicious. And the half sandwich is plenty big for lunch. (A couple of my coworkers went for the whole, realized their error, and ended up with half packaged to take back.) Vanelli's also offers really good chips, which is more than I can say for some of the other sub shops in town, and wow, the cookies! Trust me, you need to try the chocolate chip. The drink offerings are pretty standard, but their pellet ice can't be beat! The only downsides for me: the dine-in area is small and gets really, REALLY crowded, and I wish the menu were more inspiring, with more hot sandwich options and more pre-built sandwiches in general, as I'm not the most creative orderer. If you're a sandwich guru, that last bit won't be a problem. And so long as you get there before the rush (try for just after they open at 11:00 a.m.) you'll be good to go. read more
