Inherited a Vanguard IRA when my mother passed away. I found out why I have my investments with another investment firm. The customer service and their portal are terrible. They make it extremely difficult to contact them or get information. They also make it difficult to liquidate funds. During the time period I have been trying to liquidate the account, the value has dropped 5%. i.e. their fund managers are not good either. I would not recommend this investment fund to anyone. read more

I had over $5M invested with Vanguard but every single time I had to contact CS was like getting teeth pulled without anesthesia. And their HOLD music made you want to scream at the reps at every chance. They used to offer silent holds but no longer have that as an option they said. I could not link my banking - I linked my bank account through their normal process. When it verified the next day it was NOT my bank account. So I called and a few days later the bank account was deleted and I tried to re connect and kept getting error messages. I even tried their 'manual input' and that failed to. They said they cannot change the code on the computer and there is no other option. They are blaming a program glitch. My Complaints are about the recent forced transition from Legacy to Brokerage Accounts which occured in fall 2024. (What happened to the adage, The Customer is always right). Vanguard has betrayed the Bogle legacy!). Complaints: 1. I have been with Vanguard over 40 years. Yet Vanguard forced this transition without my permission (while my wife and I were on a 40 day vacation-South Pacific cruise). 2. I have been informed that Vanguard put nasty restrictions on my accounts so I can't establish a new fund. 3. I found out Vanguard has a VBA form to remove restrictions but is 13 pages long and asking for information which Vanguard already has plus questions only appropriate for the IRS such as my net worth and income. 4. I am thinking about a TOA transfer of my and my wife's Vanguard IRAs to Fidelity IRAs which is probably simpler. We already have IRA accounts there. 5. Fidelity still has regular mutual fund accounts which are simpler. read more

Horrific customer experience!!!! Vanguard is holding my remaining cash hostage a month since I completed the transfer of all my stock positions and cash over to Schwab over a month ago. I have called 4 separate times with holds up to 1 hour each and given the wrong information, given the runaround, told it was Schwab that was placing a hold on my account even though Schwab has indicated the transfer was completed a month ago, even hung up on!! They have today me told me they have spoken with the processing department and have looked into and correcting the issue and I should see the remaining cash transferred to Schwab in a week. I am not holding my breath that this will happen! read more

Aside from waiting 25 minutes to speak to someone about a withdrawal, I was told there would be a $25 fee unless I did the transaction online myself. I was unsure how to transfer money to my bank account and Vanguard's internet is not helpful. I am very angry and expressed my displeasure since I wasn't ever notified that this $25 fee was in place. Apparently, it was just implemented at the beginning of the month. Vanguard services have gone downhill dramatically. I had a more serious issue with them in 2022. Vanguard is the worse company. If like me, you have a Vanguard account, close it. I will be doing that in the new year. Their customer service reps are ill trained and impolite so if you do have an issue, you will never get the correct answer. I wanted to take my RMD from my IRA and it was not showing online. I had to call serveral days for hours before it was corrected. Now I am taking the balance of my RMD, and again it does not show up on my account. Where to start? Their UI is so unbelievably bad, they created this "new and modern" UI to attract more millennials but they still have their old UI layered under it, which has all the real information on it (kind of like Windows 10). I couldn't even find the information I needed on the basic UI and had to dig deep to figure out how to transfer my money out of Vanguard. Very very basic "modern" UI...just trash. I did not know I could do a 401k rollover online so I called them, had a 1 hr and 20 min wait time which is insane. Lucky me, they had a "call you back" option. When I get the call, finally....low and behold...they actually fell short of my already low expectations....The customer service was terrible. The guy did not know what he was doing and gave me the wrong information. They also do not have an electronic option for transferring funds. It's by check through mail and is very slow. Then in the middle of the process, it just went silent and eventually disconnected. I did not receive a call back or email so that I know if the transfer went through. I call back again to inquire about the transfer, this time 1 hr and 45 min wait time!! With no call you back option for some weird reason! What a joke. I've never experienced this at my other brokerage in the years I've been dealing with them. Ignore Vanguard if you value your time, money, and sanity. read more

Worst company ever. My mother passed away so I had to do a change of ownership on the account. Four weeks later nothing has been accomplished although I paid $26 to overnight the paperwork in February. They tried to say I signed the year on a paper as 2020 but obviously it is 2022 and I wouldn't do that. Anything to hold up the process. This has been beyond frustrating. Occasionally you get the option for a callback otherwise the wait times are 20-40 minutes. They promise to fix the situation and call back but they don't. Absolutely the worst financial company I've ever dealt with. I wanted to open a Roth 401(k) , which is an option with Vanguard. It has been an absolute NIGHTMARE since then. I've had to call MULTIPLE times to access my account after being locked out (why was I locked out, I'll never know), one time being hung up on, and none of them helpful. I've been told to "register for account access", which I've now done no less than three times. I literally want to scream. As soon as possible, I'm transferring my account to another bank. An automatic 90 day hold was placed on my account. I had to call customer service to eventually get to talk to a representative who was not sympathetic at all. I had bought too many shares of a stock and immediately sold back half of them. I had money in my account but apparently Vanguard does not have the technology to process transactions that quickly and so an automatic hold was placed and I was told there is no way to lift or reduce the time out hold. I am not a day trader and this is the first time this has happened. I had to be connected to 2 people with several long holds and awful background music. The final representative was just matter of fact. Their system appears antiquated and stodgy at best. At least we have Fidelity and Schwab. read more

First, I was a personal investor for over 20 years and was happy with Vanguard. Then, the customer service changed and was so bad we withdrew every penny. As an example, for a jointly-titled account with my spouse, telephone representatives, including supervisors, repeatedly asked for my spouse's authorization/permission to speak with me regarding the account. It's a joint account - each party with equal authority under law. Second, I am an attorney that does administration of estates after someone's passing. Vanguard has been a total nightmare for our clients in obtaining values for inheritance tax purposes and claiming accounts, including requiring paperwork that is not required by PA law for a joint account, so that a joint account owner is not given access to funds that rightfully pass to the surviving joint owner upon death. Avoid the company at all cost. Take all funds out and run to another. read more

I have been trying to roll over a 401K into an IRA, within the same company, since March of this year. Every time I call it takes them at least 1 hour to locate the check. Then they tell me the check is frozen and I need to send them a letter. I have sent them the same letter at least two times. They say they can't find the letter. I have tracking numbers verifying they received it. I have done everything they have asked me to do. Each time by the end of 1-2 hours on the phone with them they say they will need to look into it and will get back to me but I never hear back. I just called the better business bureau to report them but they are out of the office today due to a staff meeting. I will be reporting them. I spoke with well over 12 individuals and received conflicting information. No one even bothered to apologize or express any empathy for the issues that we experienced. Don't think about it, if you're planing on day trading. Executions can take 30 mins. I'm on the phone right now trying to reach someone there (during normal business hours) - still waiting after 10 mins. You can get their ETFs with any broker. Low fees can't be really the argument to stay with Vanguard anymore. 10 years ago they were good enough. Their UI was also fine for expectation levels 10 years ago. An example is I called today to ask questions of transferring 30000 more of my money to them but was placed on hold 20 minutes so I hung up. Does anyone have to continually deposit as we are told he have to continue depositing in order to acces the money. Then again asked to deposit higher amount. So basically that money is either stuck or lost because they continue to ask for higher amounts making it impossible. The broker said that's it, no more fees, then receive emails saying in order for us to get the money we have to make another deposit! Anyone that can help me out not sure if this is right. You put your money in through FedEx but when you actually have a hardship or need the money they make it impossible for you to get it back,Then they find everyway to hold the money or charge you for so many fees its ridiculous. I will never give any of my check to this after this. Let's say you write a check, deposit it in a bank and the check bounces. What happens? The bank charges you a bum-check charge ($10-20 and you write another, better funded check, right? No, not with Vanguard! While some companies produce customer "loyalty beyond reason" - Apple, Tesla, Ben & Jerry? Vanguard produces customer hostility. For 30 years I've had a Vanguard Group's VWLUX - VANGUARD LONG TERM TAX EXEMPT ADMIRAL CL fund. I use it to park my cash between investments. Understand this: VANGUARD IS NOT A BANK. VANGUARD IS A STOCK BROKERAGE. That means "customers" are treated like corporate assets, and brokerage law and no-good will produce a "customer beware" ethical base. Add to that a rapacious corporate philosophy and "at Vanguard, your voice is your password." When you put money in a bank for instance, you don't need to understand stock brokerage terms like, "margin," "sweep (in & out)," "holdings/balances," "trading hours," "market value," etc. AT VANGUARD THERE IS NO ONE TO LOOK OUT FOR YOU - YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN. Here's my Yelphy example. In November 2020 I transferred $15,500 to Vanguard from XYZ Banking Account. Vanguard invested the funds in the VWLUX account. Shortly thereafter, for no reason I could find and without notice from either my bank or Vanguard, the payment from the bank was rescinded. Since I was not informed, I did not step in to find out why the cash did not transfer. In a normal bank-to-bank transaction, XYZ's "check" would have bounced, the "Vanguard" bank would perhaps charge me a bounce fee, and that would be the end of it. NOT AT VANGUARD. Vanguard, took self-serving advantage of a 30-year old contract, which allowed Vanguard the ability to BORROW money already in my account ON MARGIN. So, Vanguard covered the bounced payment by having me BORROW money to deposit $15,500. From that point, it was like actually having deposited the money (see statement) and I indeed earned about 3% on my total funds. However, at the same time, VANGUARD was charging me 8,5% on my borrowed $15,500! Last week, June 2021, I decided I'd like to cash out some of my Vanguard money to buy a house. What I thought was a whopping $73,800 fund was actually more like a thousand dollars less than I had in November 2020! As you might expect, I calmly called Vanguard and explained to a customer-phone-level drone my problem, he quite quickly understood and agreed that Vanguard had "abused my client-corporate relationship." My argument was that Vanguard should debit me a fine for the bounced payment, subtract any interest that the margined money earned, and credit me the entire 8.5% margin interest charged. Of course, the drone had to refer this to his supervisor, Ms. Patti Vitale, who waited until the end of the day to call me back (which incidentally made the following day a full interest payment more on the margin). No deal with Patti, of course. She recited from her well-worn corporate policy playbook - even when I reminded her that I was planning on making sure the $15,000 in cash and an additional $75,000 would be coming her way - "and there is simply nothing" Patti could do for me. I might note that Patti's voice and delivery were spot-on, professional, polite and as quick as a Dallas cattle auctioneer. However, when I told her my corporate policy - that I would like to immediately liquidate my entire holding at Vanguard - Patti was as silent as a Trappist cemetery. For 15 seconds or so. Then another few seconds of silence after I informed her that I would be depositing the funds into Vanguard's most hostile competitor (Edward Jones, Merrill Lynch, Franklin Templeton, Fidelity Investments, BlackRock or TIAA). Then it was business as usual and - oops - "I didn't mean you could have your money on Monday, we'll sweep the account to our bla-bla account and you can call in two days and transfer it electronically - and free! - to your bank." Why should an electronic transfer of funds, for instance, take three days and five if there's a weekend? Do electrons take the weekend off? Goodbye Patti. Goodbye Vanguard. read more
