I have had Laura doing fabulous cuts and perfect highlights on me for several years now so I'm late in writing a review. A recent visit I had motivated me to finally take the time for a well-deserved 5-star rating. My 15 year old daughter who has never had anything more than a trim asked to get some highlights. I knew I didn't want to trust just anyone with her untouched silky locks. Laura was not only kind enough to work her in during my appointment time, which made it way more convenient, but she did an absolutely masterful job at making my daughter's highlights look like something she was born with. The best part was my daughter's smile when she saw the end result. Teen girls can be hard to please. Laura has a way of understanding exactly what you want her to do but also adding the perfect amount of her own artistic flare that makes it even better than what you imagined. Bravo, Laura! I followed Amber here from the "other place" and I couldn't be happier. 1. Amber knows my hair and she is an excellent stylist, so I'd follow her almost anywhere. 2. The old house is super-cute! 3. The staff is friendly and they don't look down their noses at you if you aren't wearing the trendiest clothes or sporting the right amount of skin art. 4. I have nothing but good, nay! great things about Vanity Salon! My reason for trying Vanity was because my long term hair stylist up and vanished, which distressed me horribly! As the French would say, "Quelle horreur!" Then the last woman who I deemed could cut my hair did a fair job, but it didn't style well straight after leaving the salon and didn't grow out well. I sent her to the guillotine ;) So what does any person do when they are in need of a hair dresser to fix a hot mess of hair? It's not like I can wear a wig like Marie Antoinette. I took matters into my own hairs and went to Yelp and asked my besties of course! I was told to go to Holly with Vanity by a friend and Yelp confirmed this was a good, solid choice. I walk into the Salon and was greeted by reception. I can't remember the man's name at the desk, but he was charming and oh so gracious even though I was about 7 mins late. He offered me coffee and introduced me to my stylist, Holly. Holly and I had a good discussion about why I was coming to see her, what was wrong, how I styled my hair and how much length I wanted trimmed off. Then she set herself to work. Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow! What a hair cut! I was not disappointed as she listened and implemented everything I wanted done to my hair! I left the salon with an amazing cut and style. Erica straightens my hair with the Chi system about once a year and does an AWESOME job! I've also referred two friends to her for straightening and they were very happy. Staightening here is less expensive many other salons in town though it's still not cheap and you wouldn't really want it to be. I was a little nervous going in, I have to admit, but from the second I walked in I felt like a queen! I've always had weird hair. When I was growing up I would leave the bathroom after brushing and styling it only to have my Mom say "You're not going anywhere with hair like THAT are you?!?" This has plagued me all of my adult life with my hair always looking messy no matter how it was cut or what I did with it. My bad hair luck suddenly changed when I discovered Holly at Vanity salon. Not only do I have "cool" hair now, but I get weekly compliments on how good my hair looks. One time I even walked into an Austin bar only to have the band comment on how awesome they thought my hair looked in between songs! It only takes 30 seconds for me to style in the morning and I always leave the house with my hair looking great. Not only does it look amazing, but Holly was able to accommodate a "rock star" hairstyle that can be tamed down for the workplace. On top of everything else, I find the staff at Vanity friendly and accommodating. The prices are reasonable, and my cut and style come with a great neck, scalp, and shoulder massage. Denise saw me with only thirty minutes left in her work day. I am an avid procrastinator and my fried, dead ends were driving me so crazy that I thought I'd go Britney Spears style on my locks if I didn't get in to see someone stat--busy schedule aside, I had a day off and needed some hair-apy. I had no clue going into the appointment how I wanted my hair done I just knew I wanted the crispy, split ends to be done for--her consultation and my request for a certain length helped us find a happy medium and left me with a super cute new style. I was worried at first because my hair is curly, but I was able to educate her a little on some curly girl tips and tricks to share with other clients and she was able to reconcile my mane into a beautifully layered coif that didn't push the afro envelope. In fact, it is absolutely gorgeous! I haven't been so satisfied with a salon service since I was a teenager! The salon is full service and my cut came with a sea salt scalp massage, arm and shoulder massage, hair washing, consult, cut, and style. I was afraid that being the last client of the day and coming in so late on a holiday weekend would mean my stylist would be in a rush...not at all. Lee was very accommodating with the beverages and Denise took her time making my new style just perfect. As I said they are full service and offer massage, cut, color, facials, spray tanning, makeup, and of course feather extensions. I can't wait to go back!! I called on a Sunday afternoon with interest in getting a set of full highlights. I informed the front desk that I was interested in this service and that would be the reason for the appointment. I drove over 30 min one way and upon arrival I saw that there was one person working and that I was the only one in the salon. The colorist was Linda and although I cannot attest to her expertise, she was very unprofessional. She claimed that the process would take too long and would go over their closing time. I arrived at 3pm and they're closing time was 5pm. Instead of accommodating me she turned down business because it would take too long. Someone that is looking more forward to when they get off work than doing hair at a HAIR salon should not be in this business. After refusal of service to me I will never go back here! Over an hour in driving to be turned away for a service I had told them I wanted. Very unprofessional and poor management of their stylists. read more

I absolutely love Aveda salons and just moved back into town and found this place here on yelp and decided to give it a try. I am going to Jamaica in a few days and was a bit in a hurry to get my hair done so I was happy when they said they had a stylist available the same day I called. I am very picky when it comes to my hair and typically pay the extra to get a more seasoned stylist but I went out on a limb and let a new stylist cut my hair since they had an opening right away. I could not be more pleased with the cut Karlena gave me! I have very fine and somewhat stringy hair. I have been trying to grow my hair out and letting my short layers on top catch up. My long parts were just too long and looked funny kind of like a tail so she convinced me to take a few inches on the longer part to let the short layers catch up. When I came into the salon my hair was at like day 3 and needed to be washed. It was flat and lifeless. She suggested cutting my hair dry so she could see how it would fall. After she cut the first section my hair looked 100% better. I have a new stylist and will certainly recommend her to my friends or anyone in need. I love love love my new cut! Thanks Karlena!! Happened upon this place through yelp actually. Had great reviews, took walk-ins, and I was in the area. The receptionist was amazing. She was friendly and gave me a tour of the place. They have a variety of services and perks for clients. They provide a drink for you too. Erica was my stylist. She was great!! Super friendly and open to my suggestions. I never felt pressured or judged for what I wanted. She was friendly and genuine. The haircuts are really reasonable and include all the standard aveda stuff - scalp massage, hand massage, etc. My haircut looks amazing and I walked out transformed. I stumbled upon Vanity Salon at the Hill Country Ride for Aids Block Party and have consistently been impressed on how they conduct their business. The fact that they participated in the HCRA event was in and of itself an endearing factor, not to mention the fact that everyone I've encountered on staff there is always pleasant and welcoming. The salons vibe is cozy, located in a charming renovated house with ample parking spots around the back. I highly recommend Allyson for her excellent eyebrow wax/shaping and Lisa who did an awesome impromptu makeup makeover on me during my last visit. I decided to try this place since the reviews were good and it was open on Sunday which is really the only day I have time for a hair appointment. I was impressed before I even say down. Lee, the man at the front, was very friendly and made sure I found the place okay and didn't have trouble parking. He offered me a drink and took me around the salon. He was so great! He then introduced me to Carly, who would be my stylist. I have super thick hair and it requires lots of patience to work with and Carly was superb! She gave me exactly what I wanted in both the color and cut. She suggested tips for the crazy amount of hair I had and let me know exactly what I needed to do to keep my color and hair looking awesome. I can honestly say I have never had a better experience with a stylist before. I can't wait to go back and add more highlights in, I definitely booked a follow up appointment. Vanity is a great little place! Cute house, great lighting My stylist, Mandy, is a hair wizard. I can trust her to understand what I am asking for and make it look good. My hair is straight and naturally a dullish blond and baby fine (read: FLAT). I go to her for dimension - highlights and midlights that banish the drabness of my natural color. Of course, I did not know what a "midlight" was before and never asked for one; I just said I wanted my hair to look better, and Mandy took care of the rest. This last visit, I also got a cut. It's surprising how much shape can be added to flat hair with a few strategic snips in the right places. I have rediscovered my cheekbones Lee at reception also deserves props. I can not recommend this charming salon enough... I had one of the best hair cuts/experiences in years, today! And the Owner, Laura, is a celebrity host on Top Austin Model... it doesn't get any more local and glamorous than that. I don't get my hair cut too often for the main reason that I'm always worried the stylist isn't going to cut how I am describing or showing in a picture. (Not that I expect the result to mirror a celebrity's prefect hair do) I've had more than a few horrible hair cutting experiences that has led to this paranoia. Rachel gave me great blow-drying tips and awesome color. Allyson was fun to work with and also did great color. But my very favorite person is the receptionist, Lee. I loved Mandy Silver!! As someone who has curly hair I am very worried to go to someone new but was more than happy with how my hair cut and color turned out after sitting in Mandy's chair. I brought in a few pictures of cut and color I was looking for and she hit the nail on the head. She gave me a warm red that looked so natural and even after a month has stayed a color I love. With my cut I have more depth to my hair with layers without the horrible puff cut that I have gotten over my years of trying to find the right curly cut. Mandy has also helped style my hair for a wedding and made it look natural and elegant at the same time. The style lasted all night and I got quite a few complements along the way. After looking for a new salon in Austin I chose Vanity based on the reviews. I didn't have a preference of stylist and I just needed a cut, no color, so I called for an appointment and was told Romy would be my stylist. I wanted to get a classic bob, all one length, since I had had many previous bad layer and "texturing" experiences. My hair tends to do the 50s housewife flip at the bottom when layered, a look I detest, so I try to avoid it. I showed her a number of pictures of the type of classic bob I had in mind and she seemed on board. I told her I wanted it long enough for a tiny pony tail and she said it would be no problem. After the first cut I knew she had gone too short. I stopped her and reminded her to keep it below the chin and she said it definitely was. She kept going and after the initial cut told me she was going to dry and style it. When I looked in the mirror my hair was already barely below my ear and above chin length. Romy then began cutting my already too-short hair shorter and shorter, giving it the uneven layers I specifically asked to not have. I walked out with a bonafied page boy hair cut and have never felt so hideous due to a hair style. While the hairstyle is fine for some, I feel horrible with it as it does not complement my round face shape and it's not at all what I asked for and not at all flattering. Romy seemed to know what she was doing, but decided to do what she wanted to do to my hair rather than what I asked for. I'm hesitant to leave a poor review, because everyone at Vanity was very friendly and I'm sure Romy is a competent stylist and she's extremely nice, but I've never felt so unattractive with a haircut. I barely feel comfortable leaving my house with my current page boy cut and look forward to the end of the two or three months it will take to get to the length I originally intended. I'll then finally be able to cut off the layers I never wanted and have a simple, clean bob. I wish I could recommend this salon to a friend but given how terrible I feel with the completely wrong cut, I just can't. read more

From start to finish this was the worst hair cutting experience I have ever had. When I first walked in, the receptionist asked what I would like to drink. I asked for tea whereupon he gave me a long list of my tea options. After choosing green tea, he immediately gave me a glass of ice water and went back to his desk. I thought this was weird, but I thought it was even weirder when he asked me three times if I "would like to buy any product," while I was checking out...as if he never remembered asking me before. I got my hair cut with Holly, who seemed off in her own world the entire time. She snipped and cut at seemingly random places, shredding my hair with her scissors. She then partially dried it and sent me out the door a damp mess. I had split ends before, but now they are frayed and uneven. Usually hair dressers can dry and style my hair better than I ever could, but I could have done 10x better than this blindfolded. I would not recommend Vanity salon to anyone. The worst part is, my boyfriend purchased a gift certificate for 3 haircuts and a facial as part of my Christmas present. What a waste of money... read more

I have been going to Erica for almost a year now. After a medium brown dye-job ended up a nightmarish black at Jackson Ruiz, she was able to strip me back down to dark blonde without excessive damage and make me look like myself again! I have had at least a half-dozen haircuts and some tinting (much better and less expensive than dying, her idea) and I'm always happy with them. Plus she is just really cool and always remembers me and what is going on in my life. I really appreciate the comfortable, laid-back atmosphere at Vanity. My 5-star rating is all based on my experience with stylist Mandy Silver. Not only do I LOVE my color she is definitely the fastest colorist I've been to. I have a lot of thick and curly hair that in the past has taken 4+ hours to do a full and Mandy does it in half the time. She is fantastic at styling and updo's as well and I would highly recommend her for brides and bridesmaids (especially for people who like the soft and romantic look). She taught me this simple technique with a curling iron to touch up some of my curls that I now use on a daily basis. Gone are the days of washing my hair just because a few areas are frizzy! The thing I love most about going to Mandy is that she genuinely loves making people feel beautiful. I wish I could give 10 stars! From the second I walked in (which happened to be half an hour late for my appt. on a Sunday) everyone at Vanity was FANTASTIC. I was immediately offered a cold or hot drink and felt totally at home. Despite my thousand apologies for crazy 35 traffic, they were welcoming and understanding. I Vanity on Yelp, and because they were ranked at 4.5 stars (should be 5) I trusted that they would be a great place for my rash decision to cut off 7 inches from my fine brown locks. I was nervous, but when I sat down with Denise I knew it would be great. She had a conference with me before the cut about what I thought I wanted, and even suggested that I do something different- it ended up being the perfect cut for me! Hands down, one of the best haircuts, if not THE best haircut I have ever had. They have great products, all Aveda, and wonderful stylists. Denise stayed open for an extra almost full hour on a Sunday to do the job right just for me and she rocked it. Lynsey is a color guru. Seriously. I had my hair colored in high school, and for the past 10 years I have been trying to dye it back to its natural color to no avail. My natural color is a mousy brown and I typically end up with some chestnut brown that eventually fades to red. It's pretty awful. Lynsey was the first person who has successfully achieved the color I have been wanting for so long! It's been almost a month now and the color has faded beautifully into my natural color. Skip ahead several years later to the present, where I am visiting family in Austin, Texas. I was very much in need of a haircut and decided to brave the salons again. My dad recommended Vanity Salon & Day Spa, as one of his coworkers was also employed there. I called and booked a same-day appointment with Denise. I have never been treated so well! Everyone was polite and made you feel right at home. There are complimentary drinks and a tour when you enter. Each haircut starts off with a wonderfully soothing scalp massage and wash. I felt like Denise listened to everything I asked for, which was a huge change from my past experiences where I received what the hairstylist wanted, not what I did. I left happy, without feeling guilty about the fair price, and with ten-ish less inches of hair. My only regret is that I'm from out of state, so booking a second appointment will be a little tricky! read more

The man who works the front desk is incredibly friendly. I like that the salon is located in an old bungalow. But, I came in for a trim and later I realized that one side of my hair is close to an inch longer than the other. It is noticeable enough that other people have pointed it out. I am certain that if I brought this to their attention, they would fix the issue. But it never should have happened in the first place and is an inconvenience to go back in and remedy such an obvious issue with my haircut. read more

I haven't trusted anyone else with my hair since meeting her four years ago. She's reliable, her results are amazing EVERY SINGLE TIME and she's also a wizard with the up-do, with the blow-out, with makeup. She was the stylist who spent an entire Saturday helping me make an amazing (classy) pin-up calendar for my boyfriend --and did my hair and make-up two years later when I married said boyfriend.
