I used to come here all the time as it is my neighborhood shop. There was a recent change of ownership, I believe a family member taking over, and it has left more than a sour taste in my mouth. The new owner, David, is flat out rude and disrespectful. He doesn't care at all for his customers and thinks he is better than everyone who stops in the shop. He also has gone into other businesses in the neighborhood and treated people absolutely terribly. Work like this gets around and has consequences. I used to bring donuts into work from here but that is going to be stopping. I can no longer do business here after hearing how this guy speaks to people. read more

Great little donut shop that's been there forever. There are a few small tables but not a lot of seating. Also, your coffee will come in styrofoam. But the donuts are great - I recommend the Shakespeare rolls. They also have a couple little lunch options if you need a cheap and simple bite (I like the chicken salad sandwich). This shouldn't even be classified as a donut shop. Do they have donuts, yes....however, I am pretty sure they come from a store. I'm 99% sure the apple fritters came from Sam's Club. Perfect place to stop in for a jump start to your morning or an afternoon pick me up. Quick service, friendly people, clean and delicious! Serves up a variety of pastries all homemade and baked super fresh! Apple fritters are amazing and most everything costs 50 cents! Classic American doughnut experience. Super inexpensive and really delicious. Nothing unique or modern (no bacon jalapeño doughnuts or anything like that), just a good representation of your childhood favorites. Gotta love custard filled long johns and apple fritters! I also love the classic cake doughnut for dipping in coffee. Great place to stop and get treats for the office on your way to work because you can spend next to nothing for a couple dozen doughnuts - and they're homemade! Very friendly and reasonably priced bakery. Unlike some new downtown GR "vegan" overpriced snooty bakeries you charge $4 a cookie or $5 for a stupid cupcake, Van's is keeping it real. Not only are the baked goods amazing, but the staff are top notch. When ever I come in there with my kids, they remember my name, the kids names, and our order. Now this is the type of neighborhood business I love. The ladies keep up with our goings on and are always happy to see us. I have tried all the sandwich breads and think the wheat is the best. The cracked wheat is a little less dense and doesn't hold up as well in the lunch box. We love the macaroons, petit fours, and doughnuts. I also love the raisin english muffin bread. It makes the best toast and french toast. We go there in the afternoons and my son practices ordering, paying, and receiving change. It is good practice for a 3 year old. The quality of food is good and the price is inexpensive. I go here often on my way to work. The only compliant I have is about every 3rd time I stop in I end up with the wrong donut or cookie in my bag. I've asked for a strawberry Danish and received a cream cheese one or ask for an m&m cookie and get a chocolate chip. Van's Pastry Shoppe has been a staple in Grand Rapids that I have been looking to try for quite some time. I have always been a sucker for a good donut, so I'm glad I stopped by because Van's is in no short supply! It is no wonder Van's has been a success for almost a century. We tried a half-dozen assortment made up of an almond bear claw, cinnamon roll, raspberry jelly filled, chocolate, and two long johns. Every flavor was delicious, and I'm a little ashamed to admit that the fiancé and I polished off the half dozen by the end of the day (oops). I took off one star because I felt that the donuts could have been a little bit fresher. We stopped in mid-morning, but one of the donuts already felt a little hard around the edges. However, it was a small detail compared to the overall quality, and I may be a little picky. Overall, if you are looking for some delicious, classic donuts, Van's is your place. Enjoy! read more

Nice friendly staff, wonderful fresh donuts and bear claws, Bismarcks, cookies, danish, other stuff you don't find in most bakeries any more, done exactly right. The coffee leaves something to be desired, (alas, it's old school, too) and there aren't a lot of places to sit, but the place has its own charm. Grab a box of goodies and take 'em home for consumption with your own brew. So much better than the gooey, gummy frozen and thawed stuff you get at Starbucks. The bear claws are wonderful with no shortage of almond paste. The chocolate donuts are old school and delicious. My sister and brother in law live in midtown Manhattan and I have to bring large amounts of English Muffin bread, chocolate cake donuts, almond raisin bread and bear claws when I visit them. This summer I had to have her meet me at the train in New Jersey because I needed help carrying the boxes of pastries the rest of the way into Manhattan. They always tell me that they can't get these things in Manhattan. read more
