I have lived in Elizabeth City for 25 years and I have never tried their pizza...why? Because their subs are so incredible. The Italian sub in particular. It is so crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle with the best flavor. I go all the time...however I usually take it to go. In recent years , this has become a redneck hangout. A few members of the staff and many of their patrons will glare at you, whisper and point, and make you feel like a sideshow attraction. I will not give them a bad review because Its always new employees every time I go and that Italian sub is so good they could throw pies at me as I walk in and I'd still order it. I ordered from Van's Pizza for the first time, for delivery via DoorDash. As a transplanted Jersey guy with Italian roots, I can say without equivocation that Van's pizza is the real thing. The cheese, the sauce, the cook was perfect. No wood-fired oven, but a good crust nonetheless. The meatball sandwich was very tasty, with plenty of meat in a nice roll. Very disappointing. I ordered pizza from here a couple of months ago and it was excellent. Ordered it two more times since then and it was terrible! It was overcooked both times, the crust so hard that you could barely bite into it. Their crust used to be so delicious!!! On the most recent order, I ordered anchovies. You could not tell if there were actually anchovies on the pizza because they looked just like the mushrooms and you definitely could not taste any anchovies. In addition to that, the pizza was terribly overcooked and had so much grease on it that you couldn't just sop it up with a napkin or paper towel to salvage it. I ordered the veal parm with lite meatsauce. Very disappointed, the veal was a compressed breaded patie. The veal as well as the sauce was extremely salty. The portion was a lot to be desired but I guess it doesn't matter since the dish was salty. read more

owner is rude, place is very unclean and unhealthy got super sick puking and going to the bathroom constantly after eating there not just once but twice. i gave them another chance and definitely regret it. i definitely will never go back. if you value your health or want to eat clean food stay far far away. also like the comment below says i do agree the owner and staff makes you feel very unwelcome and like your in the way. is it a restaurant or fast food? who knows. the owner sure doesn't. honestly the entire setup is kinda ridiculous. even the parking lot is just plain stupid. can barley even get in or out most the time because the crammed spots they got. i'd give them a 0/10, and that's being generous. not to mention i paid 35$ for a single pizza and breadsticks is completely insane. i can buy like 5-6 pizzas for that price at little ceasers with better quality ingredients haha. what a joke read more

Came here before a doctor appointment. Really wanted some wings. Ordered 6 garlic and parmesan, which they were out of. Waitress was very nice about it and asked if I wanted to try a different one. So we ended up with sweet and spicy and hot wings. The crisp on the wings is nice. Wings are nice, big and juicy. The sauce is ok. Could use more flavor. They serve it with celery and ranch. The ranch was good and I do like celery with my wings. Also ordered the white pizza and a pepperoni, olives and mushroom pizza. I was sad when my pizza was actually raw. Not just one piece, the whole pizza was raw in the middle. I had to come home and cook it for 10 minutes. The inside of the restaurant is nice. Lots of room for seating. We were seated promptly and the staff was great and friendly. I would give them another try for Italian food. The sweet tea is on point here. read more

Honestly, this is my ABSOLUTE favorite pizza place. Every time I visit my family I make sure that Van's Pizza is part of the schedule of activities. I've only ever tried the classics, cheesy bread and pizza with dipping ranch. They're both so good! They're classics for a reason and Van's is nailing both of them. The food always comes out hot, the wait staff is always attentive and intuitive without being overbearing and I've never experienced a problem here. Hawaiian pizza was so soggy in the middle it was not edible. Gyro plate came with wilted lettuce, no flavor in the meat and a sauce that did not even resemble Tzatziki and more like sour cream. We just wasted $30 on food we left at the table. It was not the server fault and a monetary tip was left. I would not recommend this restaurant. We made the decision to give it a try as it was open on Sunday. Should have gone to Sonic or KFC which would have been better. read more

Pizza is good but I don't recommend online ordering through their website. I was supposed to pick up at 5:30 but didn't arrive until 5:38. None of my 3 pizzas had been made. Had to wait another 20 minutes to get my pies. read more

This was a great little spot here in town! The wings here are crispy and and have a great sauce on them. I had gotten the pizza and it was just pizza, nothing more both hung less just pizza that was a bit greasy. Van's, Truly an icon in Elizabeth City, NC... The food has been consistently made well, made with fresh ingredients, made for the customers to enjoy... We have been to this Van's 5 different times and we have been impressed every single time!! When I say the ingredients are fresh, we are talking about nice cuts of veggies, nothing tiny but not oversized that you are wondering how to eat... The meats have been nice slices of pepperoni and sausage, the norms we get, and cooked just right... We have yet to get an underdone or overdone pizza from this location. The pizza crust is traditionally a not thin, not thick and the edge has a little crunch to it and has never tasted like store bought or been sitting around... We have only sat down here once and had one of their sandwiches so I will not rate them on this item but it was fresh and had great flavor but I cannot speak to consistency... Long story of why we were in Elizabeth City, but nonetheless we ended up here, hungry. The servers were really nice and recommended the pizza or Stromboli,and we should've listened. Instead we opted to split 10 wings and a meatball sub (which was described as oozing cheese on the menu). The wings were weird. They were buffalo flavored but also seemed to have some sort of seasoning on them that made them really salty. The meatball sub was a train wreck. The meatballs were slices of meatballs, with a bit of mozz placed on top of them and then put through the toaster. We actually had to ask for a side of marinara to moisten the thing. Slightly pricey $8-12 but good food thats consistent as having only done takeout a few dozen times. The pizza is good, gyros frozen from a box but ok, the fish is always good and nice sized. Never had a bad sub both hot and cold plus they are quick with the order. The lasagna meatball dinner will satisfy even the biggest eaters like David Shope with a healthy salad to boot. Elizabeth City is not exactly known for its vegetarian cuisine. As a matter of fact, I do not know what type of cuisine it is known for if it is known for anything in particular. So, while in town on a work trip, I was in search of a place to eat. Pizza/pasta are usually safe options, so I tried Van's since the dozen or so reviews were generally positive. I will start off by agreeing the service was great; very friendly and prompt. The interior is quite large, with plenty of booths and tables to choose from and a TV in the corner showing the news. There are a few vegetarian friendly options, including a vegetarian pizza. A large percent of their pasta and sandwich offerings are sadly (for vegetarians) served with a tomato meat sauce. The good news is that there are options to make your own pizza, and to make your own pasta, both of which could easily be done without meat. I ordered the vegetarian pizza. It's a Detroit style pie (only round), with a crispy crust and a dough that's halfway between focacia and NY style pizza. The sauce wasn't anything memorable. I did appreciate the diced green peppers and balance of the remaining vegetable toppings; not one particular topping overpowered. Parking is easy and readily available in their lot. Housed in an old A&W Rootbeer Drive Inn is Van's Pizza House. Most people don't even know that; heck the owners may not know, but I remember those frosty mugs of root beer. That's not important but just wanted to have everyone up to date if they visit Van's. Very reasonable pizzas and subs etc. We went on a busy night and service was slower than usual but the food is very consistent. We visit about once a month. The beer choices are not great; mostly domestic stuff. Just one or two good craft brews would be nice. They do have a separate room for parties. read more

The only good thing was the service. Our server was very sweet and attentive. However, I asked for no tomatoes and got tomatoes on my salad. It was all ice berg lettuce, white onions about 7 slices and one slice of a green pepper and judging by the wilted lettuce it was not fresh. It was chewy almost. One area was completely translucent. They don't make calzones. And it's an Italian restaurant. So I got a stromboli but made it a calzone. It was nothing spectacular. Their marinara tastes like ketchup. The place has been there forever so it might have just been a bad day. But I am not going back to try my luck. read more

I've loved Van's Pizza House for a long time now, I'm actually having trouble remembering when I first started going there. Maybe 10-12 years ago, probably earlier. The pizza is better than average, their pasta dishes are average-to-better, but their sandwiches are very, very good.
