My husband and I stopped in for dinner on a Sunday afternoon before the rush. This was our first (and last) visit. We got there around 5:00 pm, so we were seated immediately. It took a while for the waiter to come to our table. We ordered a couple of drinks and the tamale appetizer. The drinks were finally brought over. No water was ever offered (even though I heard other waiters offering water). The tamales were really good. We placed our order. I ordered grilled chicken on mixed vegetables. I guess I should have asked what vegetables. The only thing under the chicken were the onions and bell peppers served with fajitas. My husband ordered tacos and wanted to get chicken and beef. Our waiter said they didn't recommend that. Not sure why. We do it at other Mexican restaurants. The waiter never asked us if we wanted another drink, so we didn't order another one. We did finally get some water. He came over when we were done, asked if we wanted the check and that was it. He never asked if we wanted some dessert or anything else. I'm not sure about the rest of the food. Ours was good. The reason I am giving this restaurant only 2 stars is because of the service. I feel they really need to train their wait staff and the hostess staff a little better before letting them actually greet and wait on the public. When we left, all the girls at the hostess stand were talking amongst themselves and never even looked up to tell us thank you or anything. We won't be back. read more

My husband and I went here for date night to give the new place a try. Had great fast service and she was attentive throughout. I'd read about the fajitas so decided to give those a shot. Came out sizzling but the best part was the melted Mexican butter served on the side for drizzling. Mouthwatering, ate way too much especially after devouring the queso as an app. Highly recommend the queso and of course date night wasn't complete until we grabbed the self serve ice cream on the way out. Absolutely NOT ready for business. Was excited to see what would replace the historic Tres Amigos - very disappointed. Came in Sat mid afternoon to avoid the rush (just opened previous Monday after a month of having In Training signs on the door). Assumed it might not be perfect but wow! All menu offerings were not available and marked as "Coming Soon". No big deal there but definitely didn't expect to wait over an hour for food to arrive and then have the order not be right. Drinks were also inconsistent in taste and alcohol content. Manager finally came by at the 1 hour mark to say it would be 2 minutes. 10 minutes later she was back to offer comps and food was 2 minutes later. Definitely not going back anytime soon - there is a lot of work to do for it to be worth the prices and taste - which was mediocre. Vaquero's is our family's go to restaurant for Mexican food. Food is top notch, good, reasonably priced drinks and always excellent service. Rudy and his team have created place for the family. Only wish it was a little closer to the Four Points area. read more

Not so great given how long it took them to open and the number of cars in lot. We had the chicken fajita nachos and a beef puffy tacos. Both seemed rather dry and flavorless. Drinks are OK but not better than anywhere else. Limited happy hour menu for drinks and none for food. Service was pretty good. I met a friend for lunch here a few days ago... we had both been wanting to try this place out for a while and it was a great middle point from where we were both coming from. My friend was running a little behind schedule so I got there first and got seated right away. The hostess was such a sweetheart and took down my friend's name so that she could lead her to my table when she got there. Steven, our waiter, was very attentive and gave my friend a suggestion on an enchilada plate. I was in the mood for a light lunch so I decided to order the spinach and chicken quesadillas. If this review was solely based on my experience with the staff and environment, I would totally give it 5 stars... however the food on the other hand... was very disappointing. The spinach and chicken quesadillas was very salty and greasy. The spinach was overdone and the chicken was dry. I forgot the actual name of what my friend ordered but it was some sort of chicken enchilada plate. She gave it an 8 out of 10. I'm glad one of us had a decent meal. I took my food to-go and brought it back to the office in hopes that it was just my taste buds that day and that someone would at least enjoy it... both of my co-workers who tried it gave me the evil eye. Amazing food. Amazing service. I had the shrimp fish tacos, which are some of the best I've ever had. The half baked chicken was a hit and the tortilla crusted flounder was loaded with grilled shrimp, avocado, and tomatoes. Jorge was a delight to have as our server. This will be one of our new go-to restaurants for TexMex. We used to come to Tres Amigos at this location years ago and were interested to see how the location had changed. On our first visit this week, we were pleased with everything including the selection, the quality of the food, and the service. We walked in for dinner on a Tuesday night recently and were warmly greeted by a host, given a choice of tables, and seated. Our waitress, Jordan, was pleasant and professional throughout. We had the regular queso, which all of us enjoyed. For dinner, I had some really tasty chicken flautas, and others had taco salad, crispy tacos, and enchiladas. All of us were happy with our dinner choices. Food was hot, tasty, and large portions so that all of us took half of our dinners home for lunch the next day. There were a couple of big groups there during our dinner, so it was a little bit loud in the main dining room, but we had a really enjoyable dinner and will be back. And, there are free ice cream cones offered on the way out for a sweet treat. read more

The Steiner Ranch folks finally completed their extensive makeover of the old Tres Amigos and opened 5 days ago. We were very pleased with our first meal here. A few menu items aren't yet available but that's ok; they are starting with the basics and a few signature dishes like the beef fajitas. For a brand new restaurant, the food was great and so was the service. Only one suggestion: More fajita beef, please! It was delicious but I wanted more of it! We will definitely be back. read more

Very good all a round. Start with the decor which is pretty cool with sculptured metal landscape outside and eco-friendly. Solid door welcomes you and promptly greeted. This place is clean with great decor from unique lighting to painted murals. Ok, here is where the rubber meets the road...the food! Very good chips, Salas and queso. Basics but a must have. Next fresh tortillas made on-site. I had the combo Quesadillas, half beef and chicken fajitas which were excellent! The meat quality was really good, juicy and not overdone served with very fresh pico, guacamole and sour cream. These people know how to run a restaurant and don't cut corners. We have driven by a hundred times not realizing the new ownership was the same folks from Steiner Ranch Steakhouse, a high end restaurant. Good parking, friendly service and the manager was very hospitable, think his name was Rudy. Can't wait to go back! read more

When I finally spoke up and asked if someone could help me and the 4 people in front of me who also did not get put on the list. A girl just says it'll be a 40 minute wait. I was disappointed with my first dining experience. The restaurant seems to use cost saving measures like packing my margarita glass with ice and not so much drink, beans had lots of liquid in the little bowl and not so much beans. Mr fried avocado with chicken had hardly any chicken. Appetizer of queso lukewarm as well as my entree. My friends said their entrees were good. 1 piece of Tres Leches cake almost 9.00???? They also had live music. We ordered the salsa and we split the spicy fajitas. We also order the large margaritas. This was my first time at Vaquero's, although I had been looking forward to going there since it opened. The queso was delicious. The margarita had to be replaced, as it had some weird taste to it. The replacement margarita was fine. The entree was the 1/2 chicken, rice and beans and it was terrible. Dry. Tasteless. Buried in sauce, the taste of which remained even after you scraped the sauce off. The saving grace was the free ice cream cones from a machine at the door as you leave. On a scale of 1 to 5: the service was a 4. But the food was a 1. The waiter was attentive. The manager personally remade the margarita after I returned the first one. This was a Saturday night and the restaurant should have been on its game. But it definitely wasn't.The initial margarita took forever to reach the table. The food was out very quickly, but it wasn't very good. I didn't complain about the food, because I had just complained about the margarita, and by the time the replacement margarita arrived, we were halfway through dinner! I've read the other reviews for here and it seems like people either love this place or are very disappointed. I'm afraid I fall in the latter category. It appears to be a roll of the dice when you eat here. But on a Saturday night, if you can't do a good job, well, that's not a good sign. read more

Wow!! I stopped by last week to try the breakfast tacos for the first time and the sweet brunette girl selling tacos was very welcoming. She introduced herself with a firm handshake and a kind smile. She told me the potato + pico, egg, and cheese was her favorite but convinced me to try all of them because she said they all tasted great. The tacos are a great size and very filling. Like the girl said, all the tacos were phenomenal. I will definitely be back again for more breakfast tacos and to dine in for lunch or dinner. read more

We moved to Austin/Lakeway 5 years ago from south Texas and finally found the best fajitas in town. Great quality of fajitas ! Amazing ! Homemade tortilla were just like mom made. The service was great ! Debbie was wonderful and offered the best service we've had in the area in a while. The manager Rudy greeted us at our table and even took our kids up front to get ice cream. We've been going to this restaurant for years (when it was previously Tres Amigos). We (my mother and I) went this past Sunday with my grandmother. My grandmother ordered an enchilada and my mother and I ordered tacos. The waiter proceeded to bring her food out without ours. We waited a solid 15 minutes for our tacos to come. By the time our tacos came out, my grandmother had completed her meal. Not once did the waiter ever apologize or try to explain what was happening. He continually walked by our table and said nothing. After we ended up finishing our meals the waiter brought by the check. We had 3 adults at our table. Most of the time, the waiter will place the check on the table. Instead, he handed it directly to my mother to "take care of". Keep in mind she was sitting on the far side of the table toward the window so he made an extra effort to reach over the table and hand the check to her specifically. INCREDIBLY RUDE. My mother was so caught off guard that he just insinuated she was paying. Terrible experience and rude waiter. Will not be returning. read more

Good start for a new place. The salsa had a nice smoky flavor to it & chips were thin & crispy but didn't break when you dipped them into salsa & queso. The portions are huge! I actually ordered a chicken enchilada a la carte. There is no way I could have eaten more but it was full of real chicken that was juicy! The beef fajitas were very good! The roasted peppers on top added a nice touch. There are a few kinks but they've only been open a week. The retried beans were very dry, but that was our only real complaint. Freshly rebuilt interior, well done, tasteful classic Mexican with well appointed tables, fixtures, etc. Prices and Menu were good. Service was excellent, attentive but not cloying. Very professional like an upscale place without upscale prices. I got the Tacos al Carbon/ Beef they were excellent on par with Papasitas. Guacamole was very good. Chips are crisp not greasy like other places. My wife raved about her chicken enchiladas and also said they were top notch. I had doubts about this place as I pulled into the parking lot. All doubts removed as I pulled out. Very good quality of food, service and ambiance. It will be on the top of the list for TexMex.for me. That's saying a lot because Austin does have some great TexMex places like Chuys, Papasitas and Matt's el Rancho. I would have to put it above Matt's El Rancho and definitely above Maudies which is mediocre by my standards. I will be going back if they can keep the quality that I experienced today. read more
