An out of town trip for the Memorial Day weekend brought us to Austin. First day, we were looking to eat out for dinner and drove out to Lake Austin at Oyster's Landing and decided to give Hula Hut a try. First look it has the tropical Polynesian theme. But definitely a packed place with all the seating a bit tight. Looking at the menu it was a mix of Tex-Mex Polynesian fusion items. We decided to start off with the Mexonesian shrimp flautas, main course was the back ribs and dessert Cinnamon Toast Crunch fried ice cream. The appetizer was an interesting mix of what I would call something between a stuffed jalapeño popper and cheese wonton. Crispy, saucy, cheesey and a sweet plum sauce to balance out the flavors. The ribs definitely did not come to play. Nice size rack of ribs, saucey spicy bbq, tortillas to soak up the flavor and side potatoes plus cannot forget about the wet wipes. The Cinnamon Toast Crunch fried ice cream is a monster of a dessert. Softball sized scoop, crunchy Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal, whipped cream and chocolate syrup/caramel streaks. Definitely shareable. Overall it was a straightforward visit and the view is nice next to the lake at Hula Hut. Our staff was nice and our server Violet was great. My only issues why I did not make it a 5 star were really small things that I was attentive to: *Though we had our silverware and drinks, when the appetizer came out, there were no plates even when given the chips and salsa at the table and had to ask one of the food runners. *My ribs were good and the portion great but when I think of ribs, I would think of some tenderness to the meat and a little bit of fall of the bone action. I found the ribs to be overcooked in some where the meat felt a bit tough. And I would run my fork through the rib meat to check the tenderness and it did give me some push back. Definitely cooked through nonetheless but maybe a little too long. The potatoes were an interesting take too. Definitely different versus fries so it kind of surprised me to have these instead of the traditional take. read more

Parking is a bit tough. It competes with other eateries in the immediate area sharing the parking lot. It has beautiful palm trees surrounding the front of the property. As you enter, you are given a choice of inside of out. We chose out on a hot Texas afternoon but was pleasantly surprised at how cool we remained in the covered area with a warm breeze and ceiling fans. Service was a bit slow but efficient. Food came out promptly, hot, fresh and good. We ordered the Macadanut encrusted Mahi Mahi with two filets. We shared. With the free chips and dip, was enough to fill me up and leave enough room for fried ice cream. I wasn't crazy about the cereal cinnamon toast crunch crust, but eh, I've had better. The menu has enough items on it that makes me want to come back. I really enjoyed the bonus of watching the local wild life of geese, turtles, fish and birds. Oh yeah, the music is great. read more

We had such a fun experience at Hula Hut. We sat outside by the lake and it was the perfect setting with the fans going and a really beachy relaxed vibe. It felt like a mini vacation. I ordered the chicken enchilada and it was massive. Honestly big enough to share. It was super cheesy which I personally loved but my friend thought it was a little too much cheese. Definitely something to keep in mind depending on your preference. The service was good and the overall atmosphere really made the meal. I LOVE HULA HUT! Seriously, have been here more times than I can count. The HULI HULI LUAU PLATTER is the greatest thing on the planet: half rack of bbq baby back ribs, four texas nachos with grilled chicken, two bbq chicken tacos, four chicken flautas, hula hut chopped salad, papas asadas & chile con queso. And guess what? My boyfriend and I order this just for ourselves and have leftovers. It's a great space with a huge outdoor patio along the water, outdoor bar too. Inside is spacious as well. Amazing view! Good drinks! Mid food.. Horrible parking.. I finally made a visit to this restaurant which has ample indoor and outdoor seating and was taken in by the great view! However, my food on the other hand didn't compliment these views. I ordered Montego Bay Shrimp Taco which included crispy fried shrimp with red cabbage, fresh cilantro & jalapeño-lime sauce in flour tortillas. You may as well say I ordered a red cabbage taco because the amount of cabbage on this taco was way more than what was needed. I had to make sure the shrimp were there and that they weren't trying to hide anything placed on my food. I actually didn't really enjoy my food because of this. I also ordered a frozen Watermelon Mojito which was good but the waiter brought me my drink in a broken cup. I'm pretty sure this wasn't the last cup so why even give this to a customer. He kept saying it's just missing the ring for it to close tightly but didn't replace the cup after I inquired. Nonetheless, I finished my drink without it spilling. What a fun spot! This makes us feel like we are back to living in Florida. We enjoyed tiki cocktails here on a hot summer night overlooking the lake. It was so beautiful! Service was good and drinks were good, but not amazing. We are tiki drink snobs and these were just fun vacation/pool type drinks - not specialty cocktails. It was my friend's bday and she chose the spot. We were glad that she did. We all commented how long it had been since we visited. The weather was perfect. Who doesn't love Hula Hut on a beautiful day?!? The parking is free so you can't complain but it took a long time to find a spot. One friend even had to valet because she couldn't find a spot. At least, there is that option. :) It was a Saturday afternoon, so it was expected to be busy. There was also some sort of car show at Mozart's, which I'm sure added to the busy parking lot. The view from our table was great! The chips and salsa came out quickly. One of the best parts of our lunch was Dylan, our waiter. He was kind, funny, and responsive. He checked in on us and made sure we had everything we needed. He brought our friend a fun bday treat and even took a great photo of our group. I didn't get a picture of my food because I was having such a good time catching up and chatting with friends. I did get a great pic of my margarita! Decided to head over to Hulu Hut since the weather was beautiful on a Sunday afternoon. We were well prepared for there to be a wait and walked around the area, watched the boats and wandered down to Mozarts to listen to some live music while we waited. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive throughout our meal. She even gave my son a free tortilla when she saw us standing over by the station watching them make the tortillas while we waited for our meal. And the tortillas were delicious! Homemade, right there, and you can tell. The two salsa they brought out were yummy, the pineapple/jalapeño was my favorite. My son got the kids quesadilla with beef and it was VERY large for a kid's meal- we ended up taking 1/2 of it home. I ordered the fried avocado tacos. Again, portions were generous and the sauce on the side added even more flavor. The cabbage on top was fresh and crisp. My husband got the fajita beef enchilada and said the beef was super tender and the spices and flavor were perfect. The atmosphere is great for people watching whether you are seated inside or outside. Probably one the worst places in Austin. Poor quality food , poor service and the worst drinks. I recommend skipping this place completely even if someone else is paying. The drinks taste like they are nothing but triple sec and water. The place would not last a week if it wasn't on the water. It just keeps going downhill. Sad to say. It's an awesome location and view BUT the food ruins it for me. We had the chicken and avocado tubular taco, chicken fajitas (original), taco salad and shrimp tacos. The rice served with has zero flavor. It's like colored white rice. Not sure how you can ruin shrimp tacos, but there was more breading than there was shrimp and more red cabbage in the taco than shrimp. 4 teeny tiny pieces of shrimp with a pretty big taco flour tortilla. Couldn't eat both and didn't bring other 1 home. Took 2 bites of the rice and couldn't eat more. Service was ok. Won't be back and this was a great spot to take out of town guests to. read more

This is an iconic-Austin spot, so we've brought students here off and on, but unfortunately it's always a hit or miss. First- it took 15 minutes to get drinks ordered, and then over 40 minutes to receive our food. Two of us got the "fresh" fish tacos... and they were so dry and hard to chew. PLEASE Read!! Baffled..I saw this restaurant HULA HUT, Austin on the show The Daytripper, told my husband about it and within hours the same day we were there. First time here the atmosphere was great, with a diverse group of people, on the water made it even better. Walked in the hostess greeted us immediately she was very kind, seated within seconds. It went down hill from there our waitress JASMINE approached the table greeted us with smile and said she would be back to take our orders, the next person that came to the table was a waiter named Miguel saying that Jasmine was going through something and she would be with us shortly. I guess shortly never came as Miguel then introduced himself as our server. We then noticed that across the table from where we were seated, JASMINE was taking orders. I guess the something she was going through was resolved, because we noticed that those 2 tables didn't have any people of "Color". At that point we begin to realize that JASMINE's problem was "Us". Needless to say our new server Miguel was "Outstanding, "Attentive" and Very nice. We enjoyed our meals order the steak fajita skillet, Shrimp enchiladas and hula hut burger delicious the fries were cold our only complaint, the drinks were good too. We will return again and recommend it, and hopefully "JASMINE"will get proper training in dealing with people of all colors.
