I've been a patient at this office since before Dr. Vargas took over and have seen many dentists come and go. Despite multiple uncomfortable interactions with Dr. McEnroe over the years, I never made a formal complaint--just asked to have my account noted not to be scheduled with her. At a recent appointment, I had no choice but to see her again since Dr. Vargas was out. When things didn't go well, I calmly asked to speak with her to share how her attitude has made me feel as a long-time, paying patient. No yelling or cursing--just expressing myself respectfully. She acted shocked, interrupted me, and didn't take ownership. A few days later, I received both an email and a letter saying they would no longer provide care, claiming the relationship was no longer "conducive to a congenial atmosphere." Sadly, it seems this is how they respond when patients speak up--something I've since noticed mentioned in other reviews. Also worth noting: after every appointment, they push hard via email for Google and Facebook reviews, which may explain why their Google rating is high, while their Yelp page tells a very different story. read more

I hardly EVER write a bad review but today was the day. My wife and I started going to the dentist because our dentist was retiring and we also moved from the Arlington, Virginia to the Bowie, Maryland area. First of all they schedule each procedure separately and never together. We have would been told that we have an appointment for one thing and when we would arrive, it would be for something else entirely different. Secondly, Shannon is beyond rude and unprofessional. She is belittling and sarcastic. She has NO customer service skills. They have a 4.7 rating in Google. I am not sure how when their rating is 2.1 on Yelp. Maybe some incentive for posting a good review or family and friends are doing the reviews because there is no way they have earned and kept such a high rating. Sure the office is aesthetically pleasing but the professionalism is beyond lacking. I wish I checked Yelp before deciding to go to Vargas Dental Associates. You have been warned. Run...run fast, and then run your fastest! I've been a patient here for a little over a year because my previous dentist got old and retired. I came here off of a recommendation from a trusted person who I respect and admire, but their experience is not mine! First and foremost Dr. Vargas is rude. And has a difficult time explaining his diagnosis in a crape and reasonable manner. Second, oven been over charged by almost $1,000 dollars and they gave me a credit not a refund! Last, my x-rays are the same as 7 months ago but Vargas wants to do a crown...hmm why didn't you say that then. When I asked why not a filling he got upset and rudely said, I won't do a filling and if you don't want the crown don't do it. He clearly doesn't know me and I'm happy that God lives in me because he almost got cursed out and then some. I sincerely warn you not to go to this dentist, and I am sorry for his emotional liters because they are...well the majority of them are very nice and professional. For me I'm done with this office and this crooked dentist that has one goal to rob his customers. But you're not blind you see this so don't go here. I rarely leave negative reviews, but after my partner's experience, I feel compelled to share just how incredibly disappointing it was. From start to finish, the entire experience was a lesson in how NOT to treat patients. First of all, the front desk staff was completely unhelpful and disorganized. They constantly were mixing up our Federal Insurances and the estimated out of pocket costs where not aligning with our benefits. Even CareFirst was frustrated. We always arrived for our appointments early (as instructed) and would still end up waiting over 30 minutes past the scheduled time. No apology, no explanation--just a vague "we're running behind." The dentist seemed rushed and distracted, barely making eye contact or offering any explanation of what he was doing during the exams. Totally jostling his hands our mouths without warning... We felt like just another name on a list rather than people seeking care. We've been to several dentists, and we've never felt more like an inconvenience than we did here. My exam(s) have all gone fine, however, my partner was a total different story. They caused more damage and harm on him than charged him SO MUCH. They ended up cracking one tooth, the two caps they placed on kept coming off which caused so much pain and ended up getting one tooth so badly infected--which they ignored. All along these costs were adding up. Thousands of dollars were SPENT after a simple exam that went wrong due to the dentist himself. Luckily, our dentist farther out (reason for new dentist was the move), was able to take my partner in and clean him up--stating that what they did was unnecessary. When we look back, the worst part wasn't the cost because the bedside manner was terrifying. There seemed to be a language barrier or lack of emotional awareness issue but when we asked questions about the "procedure" that he randomly decided to do--not kidding. All the sudden he put a needle in his mouth and went on with it...When asking what they were doing as his mouth was going numb the dentist gave him short, dismissive answers. They didn't take the time to explain his treatment options or help him understand the procedure, just DID IT. To top it all off, there was zero follow-up after the visit. When he started to have severe pain he was constantly put on hold. The overall lack of care, communication, and respect for my partner's time made this one of the worst dental experiences we've ever had. He felt like just another number, rather than a valued patient, and for something as important as dental health, that's simply unacceptable. If you're looking for a dentist who values their patients, listens to your concerns, and treats you with the respect you deserve, I would highly recommend looking elsewhere. read more

Horrible experience!!!!!! I had the worst experience with the staff that sits at the front desk. They have an extreme lack of professionalism. Shannon to be specific. I had to miss an appointment because I had the flu. I called them to let them know and they said it was fine. Two days later I received a bill for $67. I called them again to explain I already spoke to someone who said it was fine. They said I needed a doctor's letter for the missed appointment. I emailed the letter as requested to their email. They said they would call me back to schedule my appointment once they received my letter. They never called back. I called them again a few hours later assuming they were busy and I was placed on a 10 minute hold. When she finally got back on the line she said there was no record of me calling previously. I inquired as to why you would have me send a letter if that didn't matter. She got smart with me telling me she I would need to send another email and that there was nothing she could do. At the end of the conversation I learned that Shannon was the person I had spoken to the last time as well. The office is very clean and presentable, however , the lack of professionalism , rudeness , and incompetence was unbearable. read more

I used to love going here until my last appointment. At this appointment I was told that I had 8+ cavities and that I needed to get them filled. I was extremely shocked as I have never had cavities before. Plus months before they never mentioned seeing anything so where did all these cavities come from? Thankfully, I listened to a friend who had been to Vargas prior to me and they recommended I get a second opinion. I went to a new dentist and I never mentioned the prognosis that was given by Vargas. This new dentist looked and checked everything and only saw ONE cavity! He even applauded me on how well I take care of my teeth. I will no longer patronize Dr. Vargas. I wish them the best but they have broken my trust. read more

First off I went to Vargas due to the reviews which weren't bad. When I arrived I was asked for proof of insurance & ID which I readily gave them. However, when I finally got to see the dentist I informed them that I had dentures, and that the upper denture was not the problem but the lower denture was the problem. They gave me another dentists who did deal with dentures. I was told that I needed re-lining due to the bone in gum receding and caused the denture to come loose. The receptionist explained to me what my insurance would pay for and what I needed to pay out of pocket, which I did. However, the dentist who serviced me began to have issues with my appointments. I received a call on the day of my appointment explaining the dentist wouldn't be in because of an emergency. They scheduled me for another appointment. Then, nearing the new scheduled date they had to re-schedule me due to the snow blizzard (understandable). I received another appointment date. Then on that new date while on my way to the office I was told the dentist was running late & therefore my time had changed. I was wondering what was happening with this dentist and all the rescheduling incidences. When I did arrive at the office, I asked the receptionist did this dentist always have scheduling issues. The receptionist immediately took offense by what I said & then disputed the fact that the dentist didn't reschedule me all the times I mentioned until she looked at the screen and saw that I was right. They put me in a room and tic tic tic goes the clock. What I don't understand is when the patient is late they immediately start talking about a charging a fee, but the person performing a service to the patient should be charged a fee just like they do for patients if they're late. read more

I had high hopes for Dr. Vargas' office after reading some stellar reviews online. I was scheduled to see Dr. Vargas but was told that he was tied up and I'd see Dr. Smith instead after seeing the dental hygienist. Dr. Smith took a quick look at my X-rays and told me I had a lot of cavities and needed some crowns and fillings. She said crowns were needed because "I had old fillings in some of teeth with decay." I was shocked to hear that I needed any crowns as I take diligent care of my teeth and was seeing a dentist regularly. (I had to switch due to insurance.) Thankfully I was able to obtain my X-rays and went to a dentist that was personally recommended. He analyzed my X-rays and said that I have some cavities that needed standard fillings. He mentioned nothing about crowns and when I told him Dr. Smith's recommendations, he said "absolutely not, all teeth are completely stable." In fact, three of the teeth that Dr. Smith said needed to be crowned were not even identified as having a cavity at all. I am writing this review now with the hopes that it prevents another person from being scammed by a dishonest, unscrupulous dentist. I hope she is ashamed of herself for a blatant and disgusting attempt at scamming me out of money, time, not to mention the invasiveness and harm of all this unnecessary dental work. read more

Run and don't look back. The office is attractive and clean and the dental assistants are friendly and helpful. However, the actual dentists seem to be 100% incompetent. I have been going to them for about one year and since my insurance allowed 4 cleaning visits per year I was happy to go. I have never had a cavity in my entire adult life so I was shocked to hear I had a small cavity that needed to be filled--according to the dentist. Especially since within that year they were telling me how strong and healthy my teeth were every 4 months. I'm still kicking myself for not getting a second opinion. After getting the filling, one month later my mouth has been sore, achy teeth and I can't chew on the left side it's so sore. I have been back to them twice to complain about the pain and the doctor says she can't find any problems. My mouth has been in pain since the day that doctor touched my mouth. Best dentist office ever. The office is very clean and the staff is always pleasant. They are excellent with emails and text message reminders, so you'll never miss an appointment. Dr. Vargas takes time with his patients and is very thorough. I appreciate his sense of humor too. All of the hygienist are great too, especially Rachel. While taking x-rays last week, I was nervous and fidgety and she was very calming and reassuring me that everything would be ok. She gave me tips to make it a more palatable experience. As she noticed my continued discomfort, she was able to check my insurance quickly and recognized that I was eligible for a panoramic scan, so I didn't have to continue with the regular x-rays. Dr. Vargas deserves -0 stars. I made an appointment only for them to reschedule it, then text me on the morning of to cancel it. I have been going to that office for over 15 years, yet the receptionist only has records dating to 2018. Did they discard my records? Unbelievable! After my surgical procedure in 2015 I visited Dr. Vargas many times, but now am told to go to the UMD for my cleanings and x-rays. That is absurd as the hospital provides surgery not cleanings and fillings. This is the worst patient service I have ever experienced. read more

I arrived with high expectations based on the positive reviews, only to find out that these reviews were primarily from long-term patients. As a new patient, I experienced poor treatment. Especially after informing them of my long absence from the dental office. The nurse spoke condescendingly, displaying unprofessionalism, rudeness, and snarkiness. She performed about 18 X-rays and various scans, far exceeding what I've had in my entire lifetime quadrupled. Despite my having no symptoms or dental issues, and only seeking a cleaning. Communication was lacking as the nurse roughly shoved the radiation pieces into my mouth, without warning or explanation. She was determined to find something wrong with the man that hasn't been to the dentist in years. In general, the American Dental Association recommends that dental X-rays should be based on the patient's oral health needs. It's important to discuss any concerns about radiation exposure with your patients! There is a general principle in radiation safety called ALARA - "as low as reasonably achievable," Seems like this practice went against ALARA. Additionally, when discussing the next steps with Dr. Vargas, clarity and patience were lacking. It has now been three months, and I have yet to receive a follow-up for any cleaning. If I could give this dump zero stars, I would. My entire family of four was coming to this dentist and we ALL have gone running for the hills. On three separate occasions I was called days before my appointment (which had been scheduled months in advance) to tell me "there is no dentist here during the time of your appt." and that I needed to reschedule. The times offered to me were very limited. My mother was called with the same statement same day as her actual appt as she was getting out of her car in the parking lot to be told she could not be seen. I was told I needed a filling and when I went back for the actual filling, a different dentist was there to do it and she couldn't find the actual cavity. Their only concern was pushing me toward Invisalign so they could make a buck. Even after I repeatedly stated I was not interested. On two separate occasions I was told I had no remaining balance when leaving the office. Only to then be slapped with "late fees" in the mail. How can you have a late fee when you don't have a balance? I was then told that my insurance neglected to cover 18 dollars of a filling, which I have never heard of in my life. When I called the office the person answering had no idea what the charges were for when referencing my bill and had to seek help to find out stating "I don't do finances." The business manager was rude and dismissive. They DO NOT treat people like patients, not even customers...only concerned with any spare bit of change they can suck from you. 0/0 stars. NEVER GOING BACK! Last time I had work done, they charged my insurance company twice for the same procedure. If I hadn't checked with the insurance company, I would have been responsible for a bill of $900 when the correct amount was $140. In the summer of 2017, they had a new dentist do my exam that wasn't set up with my insurance. I had to make several calls to get this straightened out. Just received a statement for my January check up. They billed the wrong insurance company. I called them to try to fix this and even though it's posted office hours, I get the answering machine. I do not have time to have to unravel their insurance billing errors for them every time I go in. Very frustrating and really unprofessional. I've had enough of this practice. read more

I agree with one of the reviews posted on Google when he/she said, "Worst experience ever." I will never go back there again. Don't be fooled by the friendly staff. The dentist, at least the woman dentist, is the worst. I had to go back several times after getting my filling replaced. I think they are all about money. I probably didn't need new crowns and fillings to begin with! Lesson learned. Always get a second opinion whenever the dentist tells you that you need something that will cost hundreds of dollars. If I could leave zero stars I would. My experience there today and over the last six months has been unacceptable. Dr. Vargas is very unprofessional if you try to ask him a question about the work he has performed in your mouth. There is no reason that if I am paying him and my insurance is paying him hat my mouth should still be hurting after he performs a service. Dr.Vargas tried to kicked me out of his office today because I asked him about why he sent me on elsewhere to RCT without him checking his work he did back in July. From July to now his office canceled my appointments with no follow up or rescheduling them. I had a crown and bridge done by him and it has been pure HELL dealing with him and his office to recheck his work. Well low and behold today he gives me another referral because there is something wrong with thr bridge he did ib July that he can't fix but let him tell it everything was normal this whole time. I will not be returning and as he said to me today there is nothing noone can do to him because he is the owner and I can leave. He is a unprofessional and a poor excuse for a dentist. read more

I went here today to get a crown finished today and as usual they got it done within a reasonable amount of time and made sure that I was Ok during the entire process. It doesn't matter if it's a cleaning, a bridge or starting or finishing a crown, they also make sure that you're Ok during the process and the work is done efficiently. I have been coming here for 2 year and I doubt I will be back. I had an appointment today and it was cancelled because I had a past due balance from a claim that was supposed to be rebilled once my insurance fixed something on their side. They were aware of this and someone A woman I spoke to months prior told me she would take it out of past due status. I took off work after not being able to for 6 months because my tooth hurts. I get a call 4 hours before my appointment telling me it's cancelled because I didn't pay my past due balance. I can't even take off for another 2 months because I am an essential worker and they won't allow me to be off during the pandemic without getting in trouble or possibly losing my job. This could have been paid at my appointment or they could have let me know when they called me a few days prior when I was confirming my appointment but they chose to just cancel instead. Now I have to deal with this for another 2 months. read more

I've been a loyal customer of this practice since it moved to the current location in Bowie many years ago. I was a patient of the prior practice before it became Vargas & Associates. My family and I have been coming to this dentist for years. Unfortunately, today is the last straw. I've developed a phobia of the dentist as a result of this place! I use to actually enjoy coming to the dentist. Now, I get very anxious and it makes me so sad! There has been significant turnover and I had a filling done by one of the most recent dentists. She was the most insensitive and uncaring dentists that I've ever experienced. I left my appointment shaking and in tears. My husband also had a bad experience. I cried almost the entire procedure. I was later asked for my feedback on the visit. Afterwards, I was informed that Dr. Vargas would provide for me any time that I came in for dental work. I came in January 2020 for 2 crowns, as they had mentioned that due to small fractures, I'd need to get 4 of them done. I scheduled for 2. Even with Dr. Vargas, I cried and left there super emotional and shaking. I must have been injected 7-10 times after telling him that I could feel him drilling. It wasn't until the 6th or so injection that I started to feel numb- and that was after he had started to work on me twice and I had to stop him. His bedside manner is terrible. Today, I was supposed to get my permanent crowns installed. I rearranged my morning schedule to make it, only to be turned away! After getting prepped for my appointment, I was asked if I had come in contact with anyone with the flu. I mentioned that my son had it but he was fine. The hygienist leaves only to return 10 minutes later to tell me they couldn't service me. I was LIVID! Why didn't they ask that during reminder calls? Also, it's senseless to turn me away when there are countless of people that come in contact with viruses without even knowing! Touch any public doorknob, handle, or just walk and you'll expose yourself! I was so angry and I felt treated as if I posed some sort of health and security threat. It was unbelievable. All About Money They schedule appointments without consent and if you miss it!!!!! They will charge you almost a hundred dollars. However, the will call you two days prior to confirm the appointment. But if you do not answer their call which you are not expecting, they consider it a missed appointment. They have done this to several people that I am aware of. They will send you to a collection agency as well. Trying to speak with the office manager for billing will NOT help. After several years as a patient of Dr. Eduardo Vargas, I've given up on him. I should have given up on him back in 2015 when one of his associates replaced a crown which has bothered me ever since. He's never been able to explain why that area is still painful, and so I stopped telling him about the pain during my regular 6-month checkups. My last visit--and I mean that in two ways--was the last straw. A couple weeks after the visit, I received my uncovered charges for services received. I have medical insurance coverage which provides limited preventive dental care, but I don't have dental insurance. I dropped it last year. On that bill was a charge for periodontal evaluation and charting that I don't recall having done, nor told I was having it done. I'm familiar with the procedure as several years ago a periodontist completed one on me. It takes several minutes with the evaluator probing the gum area around each tooth and recording a score for that area. Well the hygienist I had for my last visit must have been lightning fast, like seconds (1, 2 ,3 seconds, if that), and completing it in such a way that I never felt one single prick from the probe. If I didn't notice the evaluation, however, I did notice the $120 charge on my account statement. Since I didn't recall having the evaluation nor been told it was being done, I contacted the office to clarify the charge. It took two weeks before I was able to talk to a manager. (It was during the Christmas period, so I can't be too critical for a slow response.) Once I did receive a response, it was terse: I was told the hygienist did the evaluation and I am responsible for the charge. Well, dentist offices are known to be painful, but boy that final billing resolution was painful! I'm not someone who likes confrontations so I figured that the best way to get this "dental" pain over with was to pay the charge and move on. And so I did. Now I'm off finding a more helpful and honest dental provider. Okay, so truth be told, I haven't moved on. It is still painful having been charged for a service I didn't receive, so I had to see if I was the only one who experienced this. I can't obviously ask or poll other patients of Vargas' practice, so I did a simple Google search. (If you are interested in this topic, you might do the same.) Sure enough, a quick search on "periodontal evaluations" produces some disturbing results. First, hygienists find it a tedious task probing around the gum area of each tooth and scoring the area. (Hmm, I can't imagine I would have sat in the chair not knowing that this probing was being done even if I wasn't told about it.) After reading what's involved in periodontal charting and remembering back when a periodontist did the same evaluation on me some years ago, I am now more convinced that it wasn't a service I merely forgot I had done even if the hygienist attempted to spend a mere 3 seconds doing with a blunt probe. The second, disturbing result found from the Google search was that the practice of charging separately for periodontal evaluations is disapproved by many dental health providers but practiced by some. The practice of charging for separate pieces of dental evaluations during 6- or 12-month check-ups is termed unbundling. From what I read, unbundling of services is a billing practice used when charging patients who do not have dental insurance. As described from the search, the billing practice is a method to increase overall charges for services rendered to uninsured patients. Not all dental practitioners unbundle services when charging the uninsured, however. Some don't take the opportunity to price discriminate among their patients, those with and those without insurance. I'll reserve opining on such a practice and let you come to your own conclusion, but suffice it to say that the search finds some interesting positions on this billing practice. The third was not disturbing but instructive. Periodontal evaluations are an important part of dental health evaluations. Hygienists find it an important health-tracking tool to inform patients of their overall dental health. By tracking the health of the gum, the provider can recommend steps for the patient to follow to better ensure good dental health, including the reduction in risk of tooth loss. Had this been explained to me, I'm sure I would have welcomed the service, and been willing and happy to pay. So I must ask: why wasn't this explained to me? Well, maybe because it becomes difficult for a provider to explain the value of a service they are charging you for but not performing. read more

BEWARE This Dental Office is very dishonest, sneaky, and money hungry especially since they recently changed their policy. They offer you services without mentioning the hidden fees or other cost, expect you to pay for it after your appointment, then bill you later for other fees not told to you when you accept their service. i can't recommend this office, I don't know what the problem is w/the office, they seem nice, but I was a neglected patient, like the other person in comments that waited and waited and waited for permanent crown, they cancelled my appointment repeatedly, a total of FIVE times, was told several times that it was because Dr. Vargas didn't like the crown and sent it back. That happened again w/another root canal done later too. then they called and cancelled and rescheduled for a month later, and then cancelled again for the next week. All the while, having cavities that Dr. Vargas said that he'd get to later. I experienced pain for months, MONTHS, and was flippantly blown off by Vargas to just go see the endodontist repeatedly w/out Vargas personally looking at it. When I went back to see Vargas to finally get my crowns, I mentioned my cavities again, it had been 6 months since telling me that he was going to take care of those cavities during another appointment, and he never did, cancelled quite a few appointments which was insanely unacceptable, and to see that it's happening to other patients, wtf?, and the other comment where the person said they got an appointment reminder for an appointment they never made? that's happened to me too. and the person that said Vargas is rude to his employees in front of patients, yes, he is, almost every time I was there, while he scolded his assistants for talking while he was talking to me, with his hands in my mouth, another time nit-picking about how many wipe containers were on the counter in such a degrading way, in front of me.... Unprofessional on multiple levels. How can a patient have trust in a dentist and office that does all that? Another dentist asked me yesterday, regarding the pain I've been experiencing, if Dr. Vargas had decided not to fill that cavity because of any other problems, and I suddenly realized why I had continued to experience that pain all that time, not from that root canal, it was from neglect from Dr. Vargas leaving that tooth cavity neglected in the tooth next to that root canal for so long. I would not have suffered like this if Dr. Vargas had taken the time to at least see me for my cavities while waiting for permanent crowns. Dr. Vargas needs to be reported about neglecting his patients like this, it's more than just me he's doing this to. update: I just received a letter telling me that "our relationship between our office and yourself is no longer conducive to a congenial atmosphere" for writing this review, the problem is that they don't recognize themselves as the problem for the compromised "atmosphere" by neglecting their patients for months... Vargas office spent more time and effort monitoring the reviews and cross-referencing them to patients to promptly send them break-up letters, than they do to actually monitor the patient they are actively neglecting. Super friendly staff! Always taken good care of by Dr. Vargas and associates.

Been going to this practice for many years. always pretty happy with the staff and with Dr. V. However, the billing and waiting for appointments is excruciating to deal with. Fighting with people over incorrect billing and then to receive the same bills over and over again.. only to have the office laugh it off and act as if they've never heard of any problem with the bills. I'm questioning their honesty at this point. Not to mention, I've had three different crown fittings which where all not satisfactory for Dr. V. Waiting 6 weeks for a followup and new crown. Waiting and waiting for a call. Calling and no return calls from office managers, etc. My husband has been unhappy for years (because of billing and up-sell techniques) and now I'm in agreement with him. bad business practices. read more

Very well managed but to be honest I'm not sure about their procedures. I had one crown replacement and 3 fillings per their recommendation but weeks later I have significant tooth sensitivity despite not having any before I came in for a check up. I will no longer be a patient here read more

This practice is well managed. Never a wait time. Im seen right at my appt time. Staff was friendly.

Staff is rude and his hygienists do not follow instructions. I asked the hygienist to use the water pic/power tools to clean my teeth when I made my appt., I followed-up a few days before my appt. and spoke to hygienist that was scheduled to clean my teeth directly. Day of my appointment in her chair before she started, I reminded her of the conversation and my request. She said, she remembered and will use it. I waited and waited during my cleaning for her to use it and she never used it. I really don't think she knew how to. I asked her why she didn't use it and she said because "I didn't think I needed too".... I reminded her of the THREE times I requested it and how she agreed to use it, right before she started. She became very rude and defensive. I complained to the Office Manager and she was very rude as well. She offered no resolution or compromise. I was shocked at lack of professionalism. I called back a couple of days later and spoke to someone else and she was equally as rude and unhelpful. No customer service. It just goes to show, you can pay for school but can't buy class. I asked for the Dr. to call me back and they would never give him the message or he just didn't want to be bothered ?? I wonder if he knows how his staff/hygienists act when his back is turned. I wouldn't go back there if they offered me free cleaning for life. read more
