The first time ever walking in the store, they had just got baby Quakers. I fell in love and put a deposit down on one instantly. I love how they hand feed their birds and get them used to people. I also was in there two or three times a week up until it was time that I could take my Luna home. The bird room is always very well put together and clean. They have beautiful babies all over the place the owner is very good to all of her bird mamas and they educate you very well on things you are unsure of we have had our Luna for a year and every time we go in there, they are excited to see Hertalk to her and play with her. Come here all the time for everything bird. Never had a problem until today. I buy the cockatiel deluxe mix from the dispenser and as soon as I get home I pour it into an airtight sealed container. About two-three weeks later I discover an Indiana grain moth infestation. It was so full of larvae that I had to throw all of the seed out today. Great place for toys, perches, stands, cages, and other birdy apparel, but be careful if you're buying from the open dispensers. read more

Love Varietees. We got our Green Cheek Conure from there. They let us visit her everyday until she was old enough to come home with us, and I mean we visited our bird for HOURS when we'd go. They're super patient and nice and any questions. The made sure to ask "do you have toys, a way for them to bath? Enough perches?" Before I brought her home as well as a nice informational packet on bringing home a baby bird. They gave us a free coupon for a exam at the vet. Our conure was hand fed and they were very informative when we'd ask about anything. I love going there for toys and other cage accessories! They're store is big a spacious so everything easy to looks at without feeling cramped or worried to knock something over. They have a build your own toys section, a wild bird section (hummingbird feeders, bird houses and feeders) a big bird toy section. TONS of different kinds of cages. A clearance section for toys. They have a birdie buffet area with tons of fired fruit and vegetables. They haveultiple different perches and shelves. Tons of foot toys near their checkout. They're got Pleasure Plant toys (my favorite) as well as multiple other brands of toys. They've got a large (always changing) selections of birds as well. I love the ethical and authentic values that the owners of this place demonstrate through their actions, and not just words. They allow the Gateway Parrot Club to meet here once a month, and meaningfully give back to the community. The staff are ALWAYS nice and knowledgable. Who wouldn't just love to work here? They have a huge selection of toys, food, and supplies you didn't know you needed. Food and treats are sold in bulk and prepackaged. I really like the big selection of toy making supplies and small inexpensive "foot toys". I recently got my Moluccan cockatoo's wings and toes trimmed, and DNA sexed. It was quick, they did a good job, and he didn't seem as traumatized or ruffled up as I'd feared he would be. Varietees is what every bird store SHOULD be. I now go out of my way to shop here and support a local business, instead of getting everything online like I previously did. This shop is truly a St. Louis treasure. read more

It is the only pet store that caters completely to birds! They have everything you could possibly need for yer feathered friend: grooming, toys, food, housing, more birds....They even offer boarding (for a fee) if you need to get away without the worry of leaving yer pal somewhere precarious. Love this place. They have a wide selection of feed (both seeds and pellets) and toys for birds. Staff are friendly and very knowledgeable. If you get a bird here, it comes with a complimentary vet exam which was really nice. Their grooming service is for nail trim, beak trim, and wing clipping (you can get all 3 together or 1 or w/e). We love looking at the baby birds they have in the separate room. Absolutely adorable. read more

I moved from MO in 2015 and rarely miss much from MO but I really miss Variatees. These folks really love birds. They take amazing care of their birds, have a clean well stocked and fairly priced inventory of supplies, toys and cages. They have knowledgeable staff and educate people about hookbills and how to meet their needs. Their boarding facility was the nicest I have ever seen in my life. When my little ones stayed there I felt they were in really safe hands and they did not charge any more than I felt was reasonable. I really miss the selection (best I have ever seen) and miss their friendly service. I wish I could talk them into franchising their store so I could open one in Western WA because we really need it. read more

This is one of my favorite places! I just discovered this wonderful store back in January this year. If you love birds, this place will blow you away. They always have a large selection of hand-raised birds. There is a "play area" where they take the birds sometimes and you can handle them. This helps you pick out which ones you like, bond with the one you have picked out if it's still too young to come home, and in general helps socialize all the birds. I love coming here and seeing the different kinds. They always have finches, parakeets, cockatiels, and various conures, and I have frequetly seen linnies, quakers, eclectus, and ringnecks. On rarer occasions I've seen a couple baby macaws. But they have any kind of bird you may be wanting, you just may have to wait a while before any become available. They will put you on a list if you are wanting a specific type and call you when one is available. The staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable. I always feel comfortable when I go up there. They are more than happy to answer any questions you may have and walk you through what each kind of bird requires and show you items they carry that would be suitable. And have I mentioned how HUGE the store is? There are cages upon cages, playstands upon paystands, and it's simply overflowing with toys. And then there are the perches, food bowls, nesting boxes, cleaning supplies, supplements, you name it. And best of all is the food selection. This place has a great selection of seeds and pellets that you can buy BY THE POUND! And this is one thing the owner does not mark up. The prices vary by brand, but I pay between $2.50-3.00 per pound for Roudybush and ZuPreem (I was at Petsmart the other day and, I kid you not, there was a package of Roudybush that was just over one pound and it was about $9...crazy). There is also a little "birdie buffet" of dried chopped fruits and veggies. You can get all one kind or mix a bunch up in one bag. It's very fun to get you bird snacks (I think, at least). They also carry pre-packaged foods. I have seen huge bags of ZuPreem pellets for those with many birds. They carry Roudybush soak-n-feed food and treats, Harrison's, Lafeber's, and many more. You are more than welcome to bring your feathered children along with you, and on Tuesdays and Saturdays they do nail and wing trimming for very cheap! (I pay $5 total for my cockatiel. The price gets slightly more with larger birds, but I don't think over $15 for macaws and cockatoos.) They also offer boarding for a very affordable price. You can bring your own cage or rent one of theirs for not much more ($8 or $10, I believe). This place is a bird-lover's heaven. The birds are raised right (you even get a free well-bird check up at one of their vets when you purchase one), the owners and employees are well-informed, and it's such a great experience being there. Love this place the staff is always helpful and knowledgeable. You see the same employees all of the time and are able to get to know them. They may not know your name but they know your birds name. Nice people that run this place and they know quite a bit about birds. Well they better know about birds they run a pet store that sells only birds! They have this cool open area where the birds are out side the cage. You can just walk up to the bird and interact with it which is the coolest thing for birds because all other store keep them locked up. What I found most helpful is that they where able to explain the general behavior of each bird breed. Like Quakers will never be quiet, conure can be playful, etc.. They also have boarding for your bird which is very helpful for me due to my traveling job. read more

I had a horrible experience with my bird at Varietees bird store. My bird boarded there for a few days, when I came back she had a bandage on her wing and her cage and toys were covered with drops of blood, naturally, I asked what had happened and why they hadn't called me when it happened. Neither of the two employees had been there when it had happened, and they were fuzzy on the details. They said she had a night fright, a vet tech bandaged her up, and the bandage would naturally come off. My bird was skittish (she is normally very friendly) and the bandage looked more like tape. I took her to a veterinarian who said that she had most likely caught her wing between cages, all off the major blood feathers on that part of the wing were pulled out because they had been broken, and she had an infection. He said that they should have brought her to a veterinarian in the first place. Now, part of my bird's wing may have to be amputated and she may lose the ability to fly. I strongly warn against this store and will never go there again! read more
