Things that I love: - This cafe is very affordable. - There is a nice, clean aesthetic. - You're able to work at your leisure without there being a time limit. - There is ample seating: an outdoor space, seating in the front, and a back room. Good to know: - There is a bathroom. - There are a variety of outlets. - They have baked goods for sale (get them while supplies last!). - This is a good location for taking online meetings. I was visiting from Southern California, and tried various places in the Park Slope/Prospect Park neighborhood where I was staying. I had an iced mocha and scone the first time and they were excellent. So I had to comeback a day later and get the same order again. The service was atrocious. No smile, no how are you, just existing till you have to force them to look you in the eye; barely audible asking how you want your drink. Stumbled in here one night after spending much time visiting a loved one at the hospital. The barista greeted me with a smile and we engaged in easy, natural conversation. She was extremely kind and empathetic and showed such compassion after we talked about why I've been in the neighborhood so often (I don't want to say what she did for me, but just know it was extremely kind). I got an iced and hot coffee and tried the house made vanilla syrup in the iced! The coffee was delicious. The experience was meaningful and it made me want to continue supporting this place forever. "Great if you enjoy caffeine-induced rage headaches." Came here to get some work done and left with a migraine and mild existential despair. The coffee? Totally fine. It's coffee. Nothing special. But that's not the issue. The real problem is the environment--loud music blasting throughout the shop, including the back room, which I naïvely thought might be quieter. Spoiler: it wasn't. Add to that a table full of Park Slope moms shouting over one another like they're recording a live podcast, and you've got a recipe for pure sensory overload. Outdoor seating looked nice--but it filled up immediately and isn't a reliable option. Unless you're arriving at 7 a.m. with noise-canceling headphones and a Xanax, this is not a workspace. It's a caffeine-soaked rave with a La Marzocco machine. Won't be back. Not to work, not to relax, not even for a date I want to sabotage. read more

I always love checking out a new café and while wandering around Park Slope one day I saw Variety and decided to stop in for my caffeine hit. The space is nicely renovated. Beautiful wood floor, brick walls and windows that allow gorgeous sunshine to flood into the space. I found the interior very welcoming. I went up to the counter and ordered a Dirty Chai Latte with Oat Milk - my go to drink whenever I"m check out a new café. They made it quick and I took it over to the counter with lids, sugar etc. to grab a lid and napkin. The drink was good. Not the best Chai ever, but it had some spice flavor and was not too sweet. I would go back but probably try something different. read more

The manager is an awful person. He will shout at you for, god forbid, asking him for a coffee... He even tried stealing my money! When he could not do it, he simply shouted and screamed at me! This manager also serves as the most unpleasant barista I've ever seen. I was so short on time that I couldn't find another place so I asked someone else to serve me after the manager was gone for a few minutes and I got the most awful coffee I've ever tasted. I was thinking I would skip this place because there was a long line when I got there, but there were open tables inside so I decided to risk it. The baristas tore through that line with incredible speed, precision, and a good cheer. The space is open and airy, the music is great, and my iced oat milk latte is perfection. Adding this to my coffee shop routine effective immediately. read more

Stopped into Variety Coffee today on the run...so happy I made the choice to enter. As I entered I was greeted by the wonderful barista with a nice bright smile & cool, calm and collective vibes. Automatically from being a past lead barista in boerum hill I knew colson pastries from first sight. The small teddy financier was always a hit for the kiddies...it brought me back to good times. If only they had megpies this would have completed my life lol...#throwback Drink: I grabbed a mint iced tea that touched my soul...perfectly brewed not under or over extracted. It was the perfect amount of mint gave me spearmint vibes like opening a fresh pack of double mint take. Love you. I fought the urge of a pastry because I know how good colson is and already grabbed a few munchkins next door beforehand. Next time will def try the espresso straight up I'm sure it's tasty also will grab an almond croissant my favorite. The store was nice and clean, love love love the setup and vibes, it gave me the perfect park slope specialty coffee shop feel especially with the retro logo. Love this place. My latte is always so rich, the staff is always so nice, and the vibe is great for getting work done. Lots of seating. They leave honey and simple syrup out so I put some of both into my latte and it's just perfect. I also love their banana bread! read more

There certainly isn't a surfeit of coffee options in this neighborhood, but I'm always of the opinion the more caffeine, the merrier. And Variety has some quality beans and offers a quality brew. I had a good coffee and a fine cortado here as well. Pastry selection looks good as well. The space is incredibly impressive. Even more so If you remember the dingy old dive bar that was previously in this spot. It is an incredibly welcoming spot to sit and linger, with ample seating and a huge windowed area overlooking the street. So welcoming, in fact, it already seems quite crowded--I found it tough to find a seat. Seems like it'll be a great spot to work from, for those who like to work from a shop (not my coffee shop preference, but FYI). I would say that they seemed a little lax in checking the vax for my tastes. Felt like I had to offer the card--I thought I had said I'd like to stay, but perhaps they missed that or assumed it was to go. read more

Beautiful coffee shop with lots of indoor seating (and maybe outdoor in warm weather?). The coffee was good and I was with others who enjoyed their espresso drinks. They had a variety of pastries (including vegan and gluten free), quick service, and friendly staff. Walked in tired with a looong day ahead. Ordered an iced oat latte with an extra shot. While waiting I stayed toward the back of the establishment. Guess the 2 dudes behind the counter were so deeply engaged in their "barista banter" that they didn't notice that I had moved closer to the bar where I could hear them arrogantly scoffing & joking at people who order "quad shots" in 16oz cups. This is all happening while a portrait of Norm McDonald hanging above their simple syrup, is looking down on all of us. I'm definitely taking this spot off my list. This a new coffee store that opened up recently and replaced the bar the Old Carriage Inn! I was initially very excited to try this place but although the ambience is nice, the food is lukewarm. I am particularly picky with my croissants and Variety's just doesn't cut it. For a reasonable price of $3, it underperforms even for that price. The texture is crisp and somewhat flaky but it has almost a burnt taste that makes it less appealing than even deli shop croissants. The iced latte is reasonably good, but the cappuccino is only ok, not great. I think there is a lot of potential because it has a really cute atmosphere and cozy vibe inside. Once the construction is all done (sat in once with the drill just going off the entire 30min I was there, couldn't take it and had to leave), I hope it will only get better with time. read more

I wish this location would have some sort of laptop policy or communal laptop table, because in the morning almost every table will be filled with one person on a computer with their bag and coat sitting on the chair across from them. Food: Usual coffee shop fare consisting of light snacks and pastries. Service: Most of the staff come off as paggro, Cali-sober undergrads and dropouts, though a few of them are cool. If you don't mind a terse and somewhat unremarkable level of service, or are just trying to get a drink to go, it's not that big of a deal. Ambiance: Speaking of paggro, this location is usually teeming with all of Park Slope's best and brightest, working away from home. Expect a legion of stares if you make too noticeable an entry, and make sure to use your indoor voice - at least a dozen Zoom calls are going on at any time of day here, if the hushed tones and MacBooks are any indication. Coffee: Oh, right, I should probably talk about the coffee at some point. It's good, really good. I would say it's worth possibly upsetting a few type-A's to obtain. Overall: Yeah, you're definitely not going to find seating space here unless you wake up at the crack of dawn. My beverage universe is complete. Variety Coffee has opened a new, beautiful location on the corner of 8th street and 7th avenue. What, another coffee place for Park Slope, you may say? Well, there's coffee and then there's Variety. Variety is the BEST. Perfectly brewed lattes (made with Battenkill Creamery milk, the holy grail of coffee shop dairy), a great selection of beans with super fresh roast dates, cold brew, delicious pastries, friendly staff, lovely seating (lots of outlets for those who need a place to hang a while) and a very convenient location. I'm just going to stop ordering iced coffee outside of my house since it's just so weak and watered down everywhere I go, even when I ask for not too much ice. I poured their simple syrup in my coffee, not sweet then I poured more..so much in my coffee and it STILL wasn't sweet! I'm convinced it was just water so I've made my already weak watered down iced coffee more watery. Ugh. read more

The good: Friendly staff the few times I've been there. The olive oil orange cake was fabulous. The interior looks nice. The bad: They no longer make the olive oil orange cake. The espresso is not good - weak and acidic. They incorrectly charge sales tax on pastries (ie croissants, scones, etc). These items are generally nontaxable items, except if they are heated up or put on a plate. I've only taken these items to go. read more

The coffee is just ok, but the spot itself is great. Comfortable seating and nice ambiance. It's one of those coffee spots where you get the coffee because you want to stay inside.... not so much for the coffee itself. There are certain days when the music is too loud. (spoiler alert - props for Autumn) Park Slope has a real neighborhood gem in Variety Coffee. Yes the coffees and milk options are great, and no, I can't resist the treat case. (I'm partial to the vegan blueberry muffin.) But - it's the people behind the counter that make Variety extra special. I start early and can't wait for that am caffeine fix kick off. I count Autumn as part of that start because she always greets me with a smile and convo while smoothly managing a bustling 7 am start and line of caffeine zombies lol. Thank you Autumn! read more

Sadly, this coffee shop has become a shared office space. People occupy a table for the whole day (strictly one person per table...), set up their laptops, put on headphones, conduct zoom meetings, and make business related phone calls. Do not dare sitting next to them to chat with a friend (that is, if you miraculously find an open table...), because someone will look at you angrily, for you are disturbing their work session (yep, it happened to me more than once). The owners really need to do something about this, or else this is a place to be avoided at all cost. PS: btw coffee is good...but who wants to have coffee at the office? read more

First timer. Cappuccino is dead on. Cappuccinos in Park Slope are all a little milky for my tastes but this tastes excellent and the foam and color are both correct. A fairly large space where you can sit and relax or get some work done. Ambient music this Saturday afternoon, not bad. Lighting is warm and soft but still bright. Impressive. read more
