My husband and I came to eat here this evening only because we were with other people who wanted to eat here. We were pleasantly surprised because we thought this was still the old place that used to be here that always had crime and issues. The fried cod was amazing and the tartar sauce was delicious! Best tartar sauce I've ever had! I had a side salad, which was really good and clam chowder, which was very very good! Also the wait staff were fantastic!! Best service I've had in a long time too!! Never had a bad experience here! It is my go to when needing to meet up with co-workers and have a working lunch. They have wifi! It is also family friendly. Somehow, Varsity has become one of my go-to places lately. After not going there for years for reasons I cannot express, we just started hitting it up a lot. I like the food. The service is solid. The menu isn't overwhelming in complexity, but it doesn't have to be. This place isn't the be-all, end-all, nor is it bad. The menu is fairly priced. The beers are cold. There's nothing pretentious about the place--and really, that's all I ask for a bar like Varsity. I really appreciate the fact they utilize their social media to make sure people know what the specials are for the week. That really helps me decide if I'm going to be heading there for anything. (I ALWAYS go when they have prime rib quesadillas--those are wonderful.) If nothing else, the fish fry always hits. The cheese curds are good. And there's always a sports channel on a TV within easy viewing distance. Keep it up, Varsity. You're the underrated workhorse of the Sun Prairie restaurant scene. You're not going to win the beauty awards like Full Mile, but you get the job done every time. read more

Our family made a lunch stop on a Sunday afternoon while traveling from Wisconsin to Illinois. The food was done perfectly and tasted great! Just joined Yelp so wanted to leave a cumulative review for the best bar in Sun Prairie. Checklist: Great owner and staff - check Taps with some rotation and some consistent favorites - check Great specials - check Entertainment - karaoke Thursdays and Saturdays, other fun events - check Quality food - chicken strips, Varsity Burger, and of course, Fish fry - check One of my favorite things about their Fish Fry is that you can get a half sized one for kids at a very reasonable price. It isn't the best in Wisconsin or anything crazy like that, but it is well worth the price. I don't fish fry as frequently as I would like to, but the Varsity is a go-to. A big thank you as well for having karaoke and making it consistent. Some places end up having such a weird schedule with karaoke that it just can't get a following. read more

Meh. Wasn't impressed. Went in Friday for their Friday Fish Fry. The clam chowder was ok, the chili looked much better. Ordered the pretzels and cheese, probably the best thing we ordered. Mini soft pretzels served piping hot with a pretty decent cheese dip. I made the mistake of going with the baked cod for my main course. It was tough and tasted like nothing. The BF got the fried cod which was much better but still nothing amazing. French fries were pretty good. BF ordered a drink with Sprite and it came Coke. Or really dark Sprite? Lame. The atmosphere was probably the worst part about this place.One of the bartenders, the only female working at the time, seemed pretty great. The others seemed to kind of hate their jobs. One of the speakers behind us was shot - it sounded like a kazoo was playing. It was very loud, and very bright inside the large bar/restaurant. Just not really what I was expecting I guess. In general, I didn't enjoy very much at all about my visit here. There seemed to be several "regulars" so that's good I suppose. They can keep this place all to themselves. Oh and one last thing - they didn't use ice scoops. They just shove the cups into the ice, which is gross. read more

Tried this place for the first time. My husband and I both ordered burgers and they were very good! Fresh, hand made and thick - cooked just how we asked. They offer a nice selection of sides and the prices are great too. The atmosphere is Ok - more of a bar than restaurant but still kid friendly. Lots of TVs if you want to watch sports and one TV had the game show network on if sports is not your thing. We will definitely come back. read more

My husband wanted pub food and this is pub food. BUT the thing I really liked about it was their diet-friendly options. Theor salads sounded amazing. He got the Varsity Burger with fries. He was mad at himself because he forgot to ask for jalapenos, but he was happy that it came on a pretzel roll! I got the Grilled Chicken Sandwich with a side salad (light italian dressing). Let me tell you, it was DELICIOUS. The order of onion rings we got on the side were fresh, hot, and of a hearty portion. The only complaint I might give this place is that it was freezing. Granted, anything will feel colder when you walk in from 80* weather outside. Service was prompt and friendly. Their drink list looked great, too. I'm giving this place a 3 because it's hard for a vegetarian to find food here but the karaoke is great! Pretty much your only option is a salad sans meat or a grilled cheese sandwich. They have Flatbread pizza but none without meat. I know, I know. Most bars don't cater towards vegetarians but, come on at least offer a cheese pizza! It's a dive bar but relatively clean. Service can be slooooow though. Bathrooms are clean and well maintained and they have an ample parking lot. Several TVs are scattered around including 2 large ones up front so I imagine game days here are popular. The drinks are fine...nothing too special but that's not really why one comes to a dive bar, is it? I can see this as a place for regulars. Since I live a good half hour or more away I'll never be a regular but I'll come here occasionally, especially if I'm on the east side with friends. read more

A friend raved about this sports bar and talked me into checking it out and I'm glad I did. We stopped in for Saint Patrick's day and they had a great deal on green beer (you could also get it un-dyed) They had plenty of TVs for those who follow March Madness and once the game was over they kicked off Thursday night karaoke. What a hoot! We went back on a Saturday night for some more karaoke and great drink prices. $3 a rail mixers and $1.50 cans of Hamm's. The staff is always friendly and quick to fill your glass which even when they are busy. They have great specials daily that we will be going back for. Can't wait to go back to see what kind of shenanigans I can get into during Packer and Badger games. P.S. For some reason the nachos were not placed under the broiler. I really liked this place. The food's good (not great, but good)--I had a BLT. Whole wheat toast was nice and thick, and they didn't skimp on the lettuce or the bacon. I got the chicken dumpling soup as a side (no extra charge). $6.75 for a meal that really filled me up. The real reason to come here is the happy hour: $1 off drinks doesn't sound too impressive until you realize the regular price of drinks is $3. So yeah--$2 per mixed drink is fantastic. There are darts and shuffleboard... booths or table seating... and on Thursday nights, karaoke (which I was dismayed at but ended up LOVING the DJ and having way more fun than I thought I would). They accommodated our group of 22 with no problem (friend's goodbye party), and the staff were extremely attentive and fast with orders. Bathroom was nice and clean, too--that makes all the difference to me. There's a whole lot of space here, and lots of seating options. Great off-street parking, too. We visited Varsity on a Saturday around 1pm when in town for a youth hockey tournament. We had approx. 65 people attend our team dinner (18 players plus parents and sibs). I did call ahead a couple weeks prior to make sure they could accommodate us. The owner was welcoming and appreciative of my planning ahead and told us he'd be ready for our team. It is very hard to book something of this size and have a restaurant do separate checks for each family. Tony was ready for us when we showed up. He said he had extra cooks on hand, but he was our lone server. I am still in awe at how organized and thorough he was at serving our team. He hustled like no server I've ever seen. Not once did he act annoyed by our group (18 hockey kids can be annoying). This bar offers that relaxed "divey" appeal. It is a large open bar with seating on one side of the room, a large beautiful, circular bar in the center and pool, darts, shuffle board on the other side of the room. There are TVs in every corner, so you can't miss the game! The pool tables and other equipment are in great shape! Our group was pleasantly surprised at how hot our food came out and how no orders were "messed up". Everything was accurate! We didn't expect to all get our food at once, being such a large party, but the wait times were very reasonable. The food here is typical bar food: burgers, flatbreads, fried pickles, etc. with a few surprises like sweet potato fries. I am torn on how many stars to give because I wouldn't generally give 5 stars for standard bar food, but the service here for our group deserves 5 stars. The food was also tasty enough. We had a chicken burger (which was customized to buffalo with blue cheese), a cheeseburger flatbread (YUM!), and fried pickle spears (also YUM!). I absolutely love this place!! My opinion of the food and atmosphere may be a bit biased due to the fact that I know the owner of the establishment. But it is a very good place to grab a burger and just relax with friends. Another thing to note about me is that I am still a youngin at 22. However, having said that, I just visited last week with my aunt who is roughly 3x my age and she enjoyed their food as well. My favorite bar. I stopped in for a bite and a beer this afternoon, with some friends. We were all feeling down about the Cubs season ending. Paul was there before I got there and saved me a spot in the corner. "Look who's here." He said. I looked and it was Hank. He was wearing a cubs hat and crying into a beer at the bar. I kind of felt bad for him. He was taking the loss harder than any of us. I walked up to him and put my hand on his back, he was sticky. "Wait til next year." I told him. I've been here many times and have never been impressed by the staff, drinks, or food. The bartender turnover is crazy and the management tries to cover for the lack of talent but falls short every time. The food is terrible as well and none of the recipes are good even though the owner praises the cooks. Be prepared for cold cheese curds and over cooked burgers. read more

Me and my friends have recently decided to come out sun prairie way and see how sun prairie bars are and we thought varsity would turn out to be a good one but as of recent it has not been. The woman bartender is rude and has an attitude and is always moving so fast that she can't remember if she gave you your change or the right drink. If your going to work in the customer service industry it would be wise to have a good attitude and learn how to talk respectfully to your customers. read more
