Monk's Bar & Grill was a fun bar and grill to visit on a Friday night. I came out to stay a night in Madison, WI, to break up my road trip and this looked like a great spot to watch hockey playoffs. It wasn't crazy busy at 7pm and the staff looked like they were enjoying their guests and time. They had all kinds of sports on, and had the Brewers baseball game playing overhead. There was a good crowd of people in good spirits. I ordered a blackened chicken cilantro lime rice bowl and later ordered some fried pickle spears. Great food! The rice bowl had a lot of flavor. With the lime squeezed over the top and added salsa, it was extremely tasty. The pickle spears were seasoned in the batter and the spicy ranch it came with was really good. I'd recommend Monk's to a sports fan looking for some quick bar food and games to watch. I'd come back to try a famous burger or some wings! read more

We had a family gathering at Monks Bar and Grill this evening. Honestly, it isn't my favorite place to eat, as I have never been happy with their burgers. My husband ordered the cheese curds and onion rings to start off with. The cheese curds were delicious, served with a ranch and marinara sauce. I am not a fan of onions rings, but these were awesome, and served with what appeared to be a chipotle type of sauce, but they called it fancy sauce. The onion rings were not just one ring, but two rings. Tonight I chose a Reuben sandwich, to get off track, and possibly like something else on the menu. I was still disappointed. I looked at the Reuben and said where's the beef? Seriously, it was not a Reuben you would expect, with a small amount of corned beef. The corned beef was slightly tender, but not tender enough, and their sauce on top was so limited, that it was a very dry sandwich. I chose the beer battered fries. They were okay, but still dry. It was an overload of fries, so much that I couldn't finish them. My husband chose the Alamo burger, sans the BBQ sauce. I am not sure why they placed the mozzarella wedge on top of the burger instead of inside the burger. Correction, he said there were two mozzarella wedges on top, but he ate them outside the burger. My appetizer was the spinach and artichoke dip, which was not bad. My entree was the big ten burger, which tasted really good, with a side of hummus and cucumbers (very generous hummus portion). I tried some of my partner's fries and they were really crispy and good on their own. The cocktails were okay. Also the staff are friendly and the place has a nice rustic atmosphere. Came here with a group as it was a good central meeting spot and one person in our party wanted somewhere with wings. I was super excited to see a traditional Old Fashioned on the menu and had to order that. While it wasn't my favorite, I still love being able to order it and I drank it all over the course of our meal. We had friendly service and they were very accommodating of our needing to switch tables as our group grew larger than initially reported. I ordered the California Chicken sandwich and it was very delicious -- well made and the chicken was juicy and nicely cooked. Great french fries too - no condiments required for these! Food is great and is always a hit. The food looks good, tastes good, and lots of options compared to other places. Service is excellent as well and I have never had a problem with the timeliness. We're in town for Coldplay and made a wrong turn, but we wound up at Monks! Lunch here was fantastic. I got the special cotton candy shake, a double cheeseburger with cheese curds, and we split an order of the fried mozzerella. The cheese curds were some of the best I've ever had. read more

A big shout-out to Becky T. for her excellent service of our party of 20, 5/9/2026. Food was good, no complaints, but Becky was the epitome of what good service should be and I am only giving this restaurant '5 stars' based on her. I had called a week earlier, asking to make a reservation for our large party, and was told that Monk's does not make reservations for Saturdays. It would be 'luck of the draw' if there would be space for us, and it was suggested I should call back about an hour before our planned family gathering. I called and when I stated I needed seating for 20, there was a gasp on the other end of the line. I'm so glad Becky was there that day. This place was yummy. Visiting from out of town. Stopped here for a quick bite. They have a sign that says immediate seating outside so that was nice, we were sat right away. The cheese curds were good but greasy when you bit into them. I got an iced tea but it was burnt so sent back and asked for water. Curds came out fast and so did our food. I was so hungry I forgot to take a pic of my Gouda burger which was really good, but also very greasy. The house chips are amazing and I got a side of the French onion dip which I wanted to lick the cup clean over. Overall, food was very good just greasy. Monks is our go to spot when we're craving bar food or a cheap Friday old fashioned! It's a great place to watch a game, eat good food, and enjoy some good drinks. We love their wraps, sweet chili cauliflower bites, burgers, wings, and cheese curds! The Friday $5 Old Fashioned night is my favorite. We always have food service and enjoy the bites and brews. Quiet Wednesday evening slow service still. I understand if short staff but my water was never refilled even after being empty when my food came. A very disappointing visit. We visited on a week night and it was very quiet. The cheese curds were undercooked, not crispy, and dense on the inside. The burger was overwhelmingly salty and underwhelming in size. The bun felt like it was out of a firm memory foam mattress. They call themselves a sports bar, but they didn't even have the World Series game on! Instead they were showing a replay of an NFL game. It seemed like they only cared about the packers and badgers. Absolutely horrible tasting food which is saying a lot since the bar is already low in Wisconsin. I ordered the deluxe nachos and was pretty impressed at how bad tasting an establishment can butcher an item so incredibly easy to make. As pictured: I added ground beef and guacamole which were both additional charges. What I got was a sundry of chips with a scarce amount of meat and other toppings. We have been here a few time lately and have never been disappointed with the food and service. I think they have the best Taco salad in the area but the rollups and other sandwiches are equally good. If the weather is good the outside seating area is nice as well. To start off, the food was very good! I got a bacon cheeseburger and my cousin got the bacon tot mac n cheese with chicken tenders added. We both cleaned our plates and finished our drinks until the last sip! The service, however, ruined the mood for our first meal together in years. We were served by a bartender named "Niko". We walked in at about 11:10 and were greeted in a very friendly manner, no complaints about that. They had maybe 6 people total, including us, at the bar and a +10 top in the dining area. After we get our drinks my cousin states like we also know what we want to eat right away. This is met with "I'm sure you do. It'll be a second." Not inherently rude, but definitely not inviting with the tone that was used. "Niko" comes back maybe a minute later and tells us "You better know everything you want right away." This is followed by body language telling us to hurry up, blankly staring at us, and walking away just before I'm done giving my order. This same passive aggressive attitude and abrupt actions are given to the other customers at the bar. How they took it, I do not know. It wasn't until it was time to pay and leave a tip that we were called "buddy" or "friend" and other nice gestures. I'm not one to leave reviews, but this was very disappointing in my eyes, a fellow bartender/server with some year's experience. Food was great, attitude was not. read more

The ambiance is a sports bar environment, which I could imagine would be much more fun during seasons where sports are taking place. Wanted a juicy burger and after going to a few places that had too long of a wait time we decided on Monks. I visited monks quite a few years ago and had a great experience so it was an easy decision to make. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. Decor is what you'd expect from a sports bar but done very nicely. Atmosphere is mixed as there's sports playing and a bar but also a family restaurant. He ordered the chili and liked it. I got the clam chowder and was disappointed, it tasted canned. We both got burgers and they were cooked to perfection (I also loved the fried pickle on top of mine) but it was evident that these burgers were frozen burger patties and not fresh. Ordered a brisket nacho to go and had very very little meat on it but what meat was there was flavorful. I'm unsure if we will visit again, although the service was on point the food didn't back it up. read more

I really wanted to love this place but I can't. We stopped by for an impromptu visit on our way from Chicago to Minneapolis. Well the inside is super welcoming for sports lovers the food wasn't great. The chicken wing appetizer was extremely dry with minimal flavor. The meatball pizza just felt wrong, overall the flavors didn't mix well and it sent us to the bathroom pretty quickly. They do you have a vegetarian option but they charge an awful lot for the impossible patty. The drinks were OK, but nothing spectacular. Overall I left feeling like I spent a lot of money for a pretty bad experience. The wait staff were extremely short staffed and despite trying to be friendly they often messed up the food and forgot to bring things we needed. We asked for napkins four separate times and I had to send my food back because it was wrong. At this point there really is no reason to contact them as it was a side stop on a road trip but others should be aware that it might not be exactly what you're hoping for. read more

Solid sports bar with friendly staff and a huge menu. The beer list is average with quite a few draft options as well as bottles/cans. The menu is massive, almost too many things to even make a decision. I've had the buffalo chicken wrap, the ultimate club, and the cheese curds. The entrees are massive portions for a reasonable price. The chips they have are very tasty and they pile them on top of your entire meal. None of the food was outstanding but better than an average sports bar. The bartender was able to answer any questions we had and made some suggestions on what to try. Friday lunch, the place wasn't busy. I ordered the blackout burger and house chips. The burger was greasy, but fine. The chips were hard and tasted like cardboard. I asked for a small up of ranch dressing in an effort to make the chips a bit more palatable. Wasn't told there's a dollar charge for a tiny cup. My server appeared very tired and uninterested in being there. I don't see a reason to go back. read more

We pass Monk's Bar & Grill multiple times and finally had a moment to go in and dine. Buckle up, I like to do in-depth reviews, TL;DR at the bottom. First Impressions: It was packed when we arrived, parking was an obstacle in and of itself. This made us think that this was the place to be. We're not sports enthusiasts, but the thought did cross my mind if there was some sporting event that lead to the high volume of tenants. Wait Time: We go in, it's a 10-15 minute wait, we go back outside to wait as there was a line, and 3 minutes later a table cleared up. Being as packed as it was, we understood that there might be some wait time for our order to be taken and our meals to come rolling out. Overall, it wasn't too unbearable, and it was more reasonable than anything. They have a cool robot server running around, I hope it's getting paid fairly. Atmosphere: It's your usual sports bar/pub restaurant combo. They had a bar area, TVs all-around playing different things, and lots of Packer decor, but this is WI, so it's expected. Service: Our server was very chill and attentive. Overall, Morgan did great! Food: We ordered the cheese curds for the appetizer, the server was kind to inform us that they taste better with ranch than with marinara sauce, but they did fail to inform us that ranch is extra ($0.50) but now you know. We also ordered their Sweet Chili Cauliflower Bites, the sauce tasted like Asian Zing sauce from Buffalo Wild Wings, other than that, it's fried cauliflower with sauce. For the main meal, we ordered the Smoked Brisket Burger and the Alamo Burger. At first glance, they look amazing and photogenic. The Alamo was very disappointing, there was no flavor in that patty. After a couple of unsatisfied bites, I disassembled my burger. The mushroom & caramelized onions were oddly very sweet and overpowering, with a hint of BBQ sauce. It says there's bacon in there, but I didn't taste the bacon when it was all together, after separating, the bacon was sad soggy meat slices. Speaking of soggy, that bottom bun slice was absolutely drenched, your fingers were just sinking in trying to grab a hold of the bun. The amount of lettuce & tomato was laughable compared to how big and presentable the burger was. The only good tasting thing on this burger were the two breaded mozzarella wedges that were stuck on top, they had enough flavor that I didn't need to dip them in the sauce. Then (and only then) after adding some salt and pepper to my patty, was that more enjoyable. For the Smoked Brisket Burger, just go to Smoky Jon's BBQ. It had the same issue as the Alamo, with the patty, bottom bun, lettuce/tomato ratio, and overall lack of flavor. Portion Size vs Value: The amount of cheese curds you get for $9 and the amount of cauliflower bites you get for $9 are not worth it. The cheese curds were very small as if it was the remanence of what once were good curds, same with the cauliflower, they were very small pieces that looked bigger due to the breading. The burgers, as a whole, are a lot, you get pickles slices on the side, fries/chips, and the extras stuff that they skewer on the top bun, each one was $16. However, seeing how distasteful they are, to me, they are not worth it. I dare say Culver's has better burgers and I can get two basket meals for almost the same price as one Monk's burger, and it'll have more flavor. Conclusion: Overall, Monk's left me very unsatisfied. They can definitely improve on how they present the burger to deter the bottom bun from sucking up all the juices, not skimp on the lettuce and tomato, and season their meats. The only time I'll go back to Monk's is if a friend/family member wants to go, but I'll probably avoid the burgers the next round and try something different. I'm very critical of taste and the overall integrity of my meal, and so my review is just that, my review of my own experience at this restaurant for the first time. Food was fantastic! The wild rice soup came out hot, and delicious. I ordered, the cod batter fried tacos per Nico's recommendation. Also delicious...0 complaints. Based on the parking lot we could tell it was a slow evening. We were a bit early, around 5pm for dinner, but not the early bird special or anything. We got seated in a slightly too small booth for our group of 5 but we're friendly so no worries. It took a bit to get service but ordering went fine. Food came out quick enough and hot. The BBQ chicken wrap was lacking BBQ... and our waiter didn't come back to check on us so we could ask for some. The chicken sandwich was tasty but there are better options at certain fast food chains (if you know what I mean, wink, wink). I doubt we will be back. read more

The highlight for me is the really very nice outside seating area. It's been deliberately designed with a dedicated bar... so yes you can sit outside at the bar. There's also a number of tables and soft seating with a fire feature (albeit it was not on during our daylight early evening visit). This bar is smack dab in the middle of a shopapolis designed neighborhood. This said once seated within the outside seating area, it didn't feel that way... a huge plus. Our party had a couple of apps. They were decent. More or less what you'd expect at a Wisconsin bar. Lots of beer on tap and full bar. I had an Old Fashioned... it was decent. Our server/waitress was very attentive and very nice. It was a decent place for a post work business meeting, which was the case for my visit.
