My daughters (3rd & 4th graders) and I watched "Tracing the Life of Frederick Douglass." The virtual class was informative and engaging. My girls & I really liked it. My grandparents settled in Baltimore by way of NC & VA during the Great Migration and my dad, uncle, my siblings, & I were raised there. So, my girls were already familiar with Baltimore, other areas of Maryland, and (of course) Frederick Douglass. However, this lesson delved deeper (in an age/a grade appropriate manner) into the complex history of Maryland which my girls did not know about. My daughters learned more about Maryland as slave holding border state, the Wye Plantation, and discovered that there are living descendants of both Frederick Douglass and the Lloyds. My girls had not consider that Frederick Douglass had 3rd and 4th (or more) great-grandchildren living at the same time as they are. It was wonderful to watch that "ah-ha!" moment. Ashlee Anderson asked thought provoking questions which resulted in us talking about this topic long after the presentation ended and how Maryland's history impacted our family. This was my first experience with Varsity Tutors and it far exceeded my expectation. We will definitely participate in future virtual classes. read more

Some classes have been awesome, some have been ok. Some I would have really liked better if downloadable access could have been provided for the materials. My son is a little slower at grasping new ideas and getting started with something new, so it would be nice if we could always prepare a day or two ahead and have materials so we could finish a couple days afterward for classes that fit this category. There was one class where I would have been more impressed if the lady (college student) had not appeared fresh out of the shower and been a little more professionally dressed. Dry hair, even jeans or something other than a thin t-shirt would have been more presentable. Thankfully, my son didn't think twice about it. read more

Varsity Tutors has been an amazing educational option during the pandemic. My son has had a 1-on-1 tutor, as well as participated in many fun informational classes, from drawing to space exploration. I 'attended' (virtually of course) Varsity Tutors' Star Course on the subject of the assassination of Julius Ceasar. It was presented by a renowed expert from the actual historical location where the event had happened. The expert, Darius Arya, gave a very interesting presentation, referring to the various nearby archeological structures and pathways, and the q&a session held afterwards by the Varsity Tutors host was fascinating too. My 8 year old daughter participated in a free Coyote Peterson class about different dangerous animals. She had such an amazing time and absolutely loved it. She drew pictures of each animal she learned about so that she could show her dad and I, she had such a great time and asked if she could do this every day. Coyote Peterson is one of her favorites to watch, and for Varsity Tutors to offer this class for free, I am so appreciative of. Seeing her face light up and smile is the best feeling in the word. Johnathan was my instructur. I have learned a great deal from him and would like to take another class from him. If you needed help he would stay after to assist you. He sent math problems out by email to help us and if we need any assistance then he would work them out in class for us. We have taken numerous courses during the COVID19 year. There are many excellent courses from technical courses in how airplanes fly to animal classes on big cats to the most useful one which was 6 sessions on our Immune system and how it works. All ages take these courses and everyone we have taken were useful well presented information. The instructors are great, mostly younger folks with good tech skills. Many are even free. read more
