We were told our cat needed to have 2 teeth removed before they became abscesses due to bad plaque buildup. We brought our cat in for the procedure at 7am. We get a call around 4pm that the xrays came back and they in fact didn't need to remove the teeth that he must've had food stuck in his teeth that looked like plaque buildup. We were still charged over $700! I would've been fine paying for the bloodwork and x-rays but we shouldn't have had to pay for anything else, it was their mistake. We have pet insurance and we're set to get back almost all of money for the teeth removal but since they didn't have to remove the teeth we only got back $75. Since then I have pulled both our cats records and will be going else where. UPDATE: We were contacted by the manager of VCA and she made it right. Thank you so much! read more

(updated - as I felt my 1 star was not fair to the doctor, techs and most of the front staff that do an awesome job. I have felt that my dogs were well taken care of and after looking around I have found that while a lot of stuff is a lot more than others, some of the other stuff is actually a little less so maybe it balances out somewhat.) First off, the technicians, and veterinarian are great. They have same day appointments that you can call first thing in the morning to get. Twice now, today being one, the receptionist put me on hold to answer the other line. When she asked if it was an emergency or could she put me on hold? I said I'm calling for a same day appointment and don't want to miss it. She said there's a 2:30 and 3:30 so I quickly said I will take the 2:30. She put me on hold then when she got back on she said oh, I gave the 2:30 away. So I said the 3:30 is good. Oh, the other lady just gave that one away. What?! I was the first to call and was put on hold to answer the phone and book appointments. Why weren't they put on hold to answer in order. Now I still have a sick puppy and they are closed Sunday. Unacceptable. That is the worst case of poor customer service. Can't wait till the other places open up. Shame as this place is so close and I do like the vet and technicians. read more

I have had several appointments and the staff & vets are amazing. . They have great protocols for covid to protect there employees & customers. I will continue to bring my dogs here for several reason & one being these well thought out protocols. Everyone I have talked to this far has been extremely nice & very helpful. My little mini dachshund Lucy is usually pretty timid but she absolutely loved everyone in the office and the care and service provided was better than any experience I have ever had at the vet's office. They explained everything and answered all my questions and kept me updated throughout the procedure she had done. After calling about 10 vets in the area, about a semi emergency for my dog, I scheduled an appointment with VCA Alpine for within the week, rather than a month or two out. My dog grizzly is a 20 pound mix breed and can literally do no harm, but he acts like his name sake. The technicians and Vet at VCA Alpine handled him amazingly and gave me extra resources for the other questions I had. I highly recommend taking your pets here! read more

Loved their COVID aware process. They were one of the only vets in town that were 1. Accepting new patients and 2. Had availability. I was a little hesitant due to the poor reviews but my experience was nothing less than exceptional. I received a reminder text the day before outlining the process. Park in a designated spot for my appointment type, call and let them know, after answering a few questions over the phone they came to get my pets from my car. The Dr. called me to go over how the appointment went. Then they brought the car out and we did payment outside while I sat in my car. Easy. Thanks Alpine! read more

I called my veterinary clinic and there were no openings for my pet so I called here since a friend likes one of the vets here. I was happy I was able to come in a couple of hours after calling. Went in and spoke of the issue to the technician, who was affable and easy to talk to, and took notes for the vet. Vet came in and cat was a bit growly and didn't want to leave her carrier, though I offered to take her out for examination. She isn't really a grumpy gus, but she's not a fan of the vet. Vet declined examination, but decided to list all possible issues and outlined a recommended course of action, totaling over $700. Mind you absolutely no effort was made to examine her, but he did decide to slightly disparage my vet's determination of her health that was based on her blood work and results. Vet just stood there with his hands in his pockets talking. Yeaaahhh, I can listen to a person's symptoms and make a diagnosis using a physicians desk reference, but that doesn't mean it's dependable for adequate health care. Vet left and technician came in and showed me the cost of the examination/consultation fee of $78. When I said there wasn't an examination he left and came back with a bill of $75. Like, uhhhh WHART? Thankfully there is an online coupon for $25 for a first time visit or I would have been livid, like yelling livid. No way will I come back here or recommend, and though I appreciate my friend's love of their vet here I do not trust this center to provide good pet care if they hire this vet as a qualified individual. I did get a call from this clinic the next morning for an update on pet's health as I was driving to another clinic and said as much. That clinic had no problem handling her or making an effort to give the best diagnosis based on examination of her vitals and information. read more

The following is a letter I dropped off to Christopher Clement at Alpine VCA on Monday, December 13, 2021. As usual, I received no response!!! December 13, 2021 Christopher Clement Alpine VCA Dear Mr. Clement: I can't even start with a Dr. salutation. I am writing this letter to let you know that I am so very disappointed with you and your staff. You came SO HIGHLY recommended that I waited a month for an appointment with you. When I met you and saw the way you reacted with my dogs, I was pleased. I was also appreciative of the way you explained everything to me and continued to ask if I had more questions. I thought you genuinely cared about my sweet girl Haylee but now I believe you and your agency are all about the mighty dollar. You knew how sick Haylee was when you went on vacation and you did not call once to see how she was! I called the day after you left asking for medication to help her eat. Not one doctor, tech or receptionist bothered to call me back! I called at least 4 times in the time you were gone asking for the last result of the very expensive blood test I paid for from the University of Michigan. Again, not one return phone call. You yourself said you would call the office for that last test result and would call me even though you were on vacation. It appears neither you or anyone else in that office care about your patients. You finally called me on December 6, 2021 to ask how Haylee was doing and you prescribed more expensive useless medications. You said you would call me back on Thursday or Friday of that week to see how she was doing and guess what??? YOU YOURSELF DIDN'T CALL BACK LIKE THE REST OF THE STAFF THERE! I truly believe my girl suffered from your lack of care and compassion! I will never recommend your office to friends and family and if asked why, I will go into detail with them so they know never to go there. I will also let people know that your office gave vaccinations to the wrong dog without waiting for their records from the Pet Stop. Sooooo much incompetency at that office. Initially going here five years ago, was lovely no problems. We had I believe a dr.Schmidt working with us. She left and since has been hard to get quality service. My main complaint is with he front desk staff, many times I go in to check in or out and I do not get a friendly positive attitudes. Or worse yet, today my dog needs an appointment for what is a wet cough, since the night before and still today (pneumonia is my best educated guess). My cell is broke. Had mom call, and she had a rude man named Matthew a desk receptionist, sit there and tell her what HE thinks it was (kennel cough) and says this Tuesday for our appointment not to even bring in my dog. First call I gave to him I was put on hold for four minutes! I gave him a call back on a borrowed cell, he picks up immediately and is ready to help..so I called to let him know what the symptoms are, and that he was rude , of course he denies being that way and is defensive. We have gone here for quite a while. I always thought the prices were high, but they are near our house, and my wife likes them. I noticed they always seem to load up surprise charges for extra tasks that seemed unnecessary. Now our new pup needs to be spayed. VCA estimated ~$75 for a "consult" (she already goes there!), then ~$175 for bloodwork, then ~$632 for the spay operation. All told about $920 for a common operation that is performed daily at vets all over the US. When I asked why, the receptionist said it's their policy. I checked around town. College Village Animal Clinic will do the whole thing for about ~$480. Southside Animal Clinic quoted about ~$250, but they're not taking any more new animals because they have all the work they can handle. So, VCA quotes roughly 2-3 times the price of other vets. I'm not going back to someone who charges two to three times what the other vets charge. That's MY policy. If you're made of money, then by all means, go here. read more

First time coming to this place. I had read the bad reviews but decided to give it a try. The vet was really sweet and played with my pup and answered my questions; however, the receptionist ruined my experience here. She couldn't think about more than one thing at a time and there were a million things going on with customers and dogs everywhere. By the time she was able to give an ounce of attention to me during my check out, she made a huge error which only flustered her more and caused a bigger delay. I spent more time trying to pay than I did in the back with the tech and vet. I won't be returning. My time is valuable. You need to hire a receptionist that has great customer service and multi tasking skills and can answer basic questions. read more

My dog had been seeing Dr. Simmons for months. She used acupuncture and the results appeared to strengthen him more than the weekly water therapy sessions (at another facility). He has high anxiety and Dr. Simmons was very patient and caring, and he would perk right up after each session! It is an animal hospital so patience is needed as they may run late due to other pet emergencies. I absolutely love Dr. Simmons and if other therapies are not working I would highly recommend her. read more

I've had nothing but good service here! When I first moved here 4 years ago I am saw a different vet that I didn't like and made an appointment with Tina Simmons. First couple minutes I knew we found our vet! Tina is amazing and truly cares about your animal & you! I'll tell you a scary story. This past June my dog, daughter & I went up to Talkeetna to start senior pictures. My dog ate or got bit by something and went into shock. I had no clue what was happening to her. She just plopped down on the ground and wasn't responsive to anything. Talkeetna had 1 vet that I couldn't reach. So I called then next one that was "close" in Big Lake & they could fit us in if we weren't late. I was freaking out thinking my dog wasn't going to make it the 1.5hr trip south. I called Tina! She talked me through one of the scariest moments of my pet-parent life and helped me through getting vitals & temp and calming me down. Figured she would make it back to town and that she was not having heat stroke & the signs seemed to be Anaphylactic shock. We got her back to Anchorage and took her to PetER for blood work Tina requested us to do and it showed what she suspected was right. If she wouldn't of been able/willing to talk to me and walk me through this I would of probably been pulled over for speeding trying to make the Big Lake appointment. Today my dog is fine & and she will need Benadryl before any hikes or outdoor woodsy activities to help any future issues. I've also seen Dr Cho and he was very nice and caring. Joyce in reception is WONDERFUL! I love that woman. She will do anything she can to fit you in at the last minute for a sick animal! read more

Our cat was seen by Dr. Simmons, who very quickly diagnosed his swollen front paw as a cat bite abscess. He was treated kindly and professionally and was back to his normal self that evening. Dr. Simmons listened to my concerns about drug reactions and selected a sedative and antibiotics that didn't cause any adverse reactions. Very pleased with care at VCA. read more

We have been taking our dogs to VCA Alpine for several years. We purchased our insurance plan there. We didn't care for one of the veterinarians, but thankfully she left. We have been satisfied with the care for the most part, but my impression is they care more about making money than for pets. We inadvertently let a prescription medication get to the last pill. We called to get a refill, but the prescribing vet was out of the office. We had to wait several days until the vet returned. There is another vet in the office, but apparently only the prescribing vet can refill a prescription. The medication was for pain and anxiety. We waited and worried about out our elderly dog for days until we could get a refill. I called another vet clinic today and asked if their vets covered for each other when pets need a refill. I was assured that the problem we faced at VCA Alpine would not occur at the clinic I contacted. Time for a new veterinary care clinic. read more

Don't go here! :-( Boarding options for dogs with special needs in Anchorage is limited to VCA clinics it seems. Our lab is diabetic and requires insulin shots twice a day. Last year we boarded her here while we took a trip and we got a call that they gave her took much insulin and she had a seizure. We counted it as a fluke and were happy with their honesty. This was the first time she ever had a seizure the whole time she has been diabetic. Fast forward to yesterday, once again boarded at Alpine and she has another seizure from too low blood sugar. They claim they gave her the right amount and it was the "stress" of being boarded. She never had any problems at her prior boarder in New Mexico (and it wasn't even a vet)! 2/3 her diabetic seizures were at Alpine... you do the math. Unfortunately, from experience I have an assumption of what might have happened since her other seizure happened at home after getting a shot then not eating.... Either this happened or they once again gave her too much! I just expect a lot more boarding at vet for the price we paid. Never again! read more

Our family recently adopted a rescue dog. This was our first visit to VCA and we had heard mixed reviews from our friends. We decided before hand not to use them as a vet, but we decided we would try them for a bath and nails since they were so close to us. It was a mistake. I dropped the dog of 815am on Monday and was told she would be started on right away. We called to see if everything was ok at 2pm and were told the groomers were finishing up and would call us as soon as she was dry. They never called back so we called at 345pm and no one seemed to know what was going on. We picked her up 15 minutes later and still it seemed like the staff was over whelmed and confused. The 15 pound dog came home and drank 2 bowls of water like she hadn't had any all day. 7.5 hours in a cage to get a bath and nail trim is ridiculous. Definitely won't be back. read more

We just had our second horrible visit in under a year. We have seen two vets. We absolutely LOVE Dr. Schmidt and can't say enough about her, but unfortunately, we can't always see her. Last year we ended up having a disastrous visit with Dr. Hodges. She has no bedside manner and even for a routine physical/vaccines was hostile towards our pup and instantly put her on guard. She didn't introduce herself and clearly was put off from the start. It's the only time our dog has threatened to nip at anyone. Ever. After a year of working to overcome that one incident through attempted positive stops just for treats or weigh-ins, we had the misfortune of being scheduled with Dr. Hodges again. Our pup instantly recognized her and was alarmed. Again Dr. Hodges didn't introduce herself to the dog and just started gruffly handling her. I directly asked if she could stop and introduce herself (As we've been told to do so as to overcome her fear) and Dr. Hodges refused! We were there to investigate a suspicious skin growth. We were given an estimate for an $800+ removal surgery without being offered any sort of tests in advance. I got the feeling we were being taken advantage of and that had a skin scrape test or other test been available (as was done by a vet on a previous dog we had that had cancer) it wouldn't have been offered. As much as we love Dr. Schmidt, I can't guarantee our dog won't have to deal with Dr. Hodges, either in a visit or in the back. This was the second chance. We will be finding a new vet where all the staff seem caring and respectful, especially to the animals. read more

Absolutely positively a horrifying experience. I will never return to the facility again!!! There's no point in even reporting the incident to the manager because the manager was involved in the situation. Do not take your pets here they do not care about your animals!!!! It was my first visit and I kept getting told "weigh your dog" "weigh your dog".... where was the scale??? Oh it was behind the counter!!!!! You would think they would have been courteous enough to tell me where it was, especially for a first time visitor.... I didn't know that and then I got a really bad attitude with me because I didn't weigh my dog! Then the vet visit was an absolute joke! The veterinarian didn't check his teeth didn't check ears didn't check the pause just petted him and said oh he's a good dog he's fine! I refuse to take any animal here again!!! Run away as fast as you can! The staff obviously was having quarrels because they were rude to each other, glaring at each other, and extremely rude to the customers!!! If you don't mind getting treated like junk and don't care about your animals then I guess you can go here, if you actually care stay away from VCA!!!!! read more

I have taken my dog here since he was 4 months old and he will be 3 at Christmas. The first year we brought him we enjoyed the service we received. However, around a little less than a year ago we brought him in due to bad eye boogers which were abnormal. The vet we saw passed it off as nothing, which we believed not knowing that a dog should never have eye boogers to that extent without a cause. Also at this appointment, we asked about his weight (he's a very active hunting breed with a fast metabolism (he already eats 2x what hes supposed to on his own) and if there was anything we could do to his food beside schedule feeding. We felt like they were trying to really push us into schedule feeding which we felt wasn't right for our dog's lifestyle and they couldn't recommend anything else besides it. Fast forward to the past 2 weeks where we moved out of state and my dog is living with another dog who out of nowhere started getting bad eye boogers as well. His owners brought him to a vet and concluded that my dog must have a bacterial eye infection and spread it to this dog because they aren't around any other dogs. Bringing my dog to the vet concluded this true. So who knows how many dogs my dog has accidentally spread this too when he attended daycare over 3 months ago. We did try changing vets at one point but it was too much of a hassle to transfer records and go to an even farther vet when he rarely visited. read more

Our AWESOME vet - Dr. Tina Simmons! We adore and appreciate her so much! The Kitty and K-9 Connection (KKC) rescues get excellent treatment and care from Dr. Simmons. When she first agreed to become the KKC vet, she didn't know what she was getting into. We've brought her lots of challenges thru' the last nine years that's for sure. Dr. Simmons is always willing to give our rescues her best. She's never treated them as "just rescues" - they are her patients who deserve her high quality of vet care and expertise - and they get it! KKC would not be able to save as many cats and dogs without a vet devoted to providing vet care to our rescues - Dr. Simmons has been our devoted and very loved vet for nine years now! Our volunteers trust her so much, that they have transferred their (sometimes numerous) personal pets to her for vet care. We can't thank her enuff for all she's done for the KKC rescues and the hearts of the KKC volunteers - but we try by keeping her going with diet Dr. Pepper - .
