Good: Vet surgeon Dr. Grace did a great job on my 10 yr old doggie who had swallowed two plastic bags that had held chicken. Saved her life. Two of the tech were equally good. Bad: Personnel including docs changes very often. My dog had 4 docs in 5 days, and the cost was outrageous. $11,000 + for treatment. They often didn't coordinate well between shifts, resulting in differing information and instructions. They also made every effort to upsell services. read more

the customer service was the only reason I feel this place deserves more than than 1 stars. The front desk workers were friendly and accommodating to the fact that I had to bring my young baby with me. However this does not make up for the extreme price gouging that happens here. My cat was seen for what turned out to be a dislocation injury to his back leg, that I was told would need a consultation for surgery. They set the leg in a cast as a temporary measure, but not a permanent or long term solution. Just purely as triaging the injury. The cost of this triage, temporary treatment was most of my rent and almost half of my monthly paycheck, with no options for payment plans. And I had to fork over 950 before they would even start the treatment. The only options I was given were to take out personal loans, ask relatives, contact rescues or not get my cat treated. I do not have good credit, and was not able to take out any loans, and my relatives are just as poor as I am, also it was late evening on a holiday weekend so no rescue would be open. After just scraping by making the payment that night, I'm now sitting 3 days later needing to bring my cat back in because his cast slipped. I am having to decide if I'm going to feed my kids and pay rent this month or treat my suffering cat. Would not recommend unless you're from the rich upper class with no where else to go and definitely not if you're expecting fair pricing for treatment. But hey, at least the front desk lady gouged out my finances with a smile! read more

All I know is that when I brought my dog in after getting attacked no one even came out to look at or triage her. No one except the front desk staff even bothered to acknowledge us after we checked in. My dog had two bleeding puncture wounds in her face and we just got told she kept getting pushed back on the wait list after waiting for 6 hours. I understand the more urgent cases get priority but the fact that not even a bandage for the bleeding was offered is ridiculous. Save your time and money. I can't believe this business is the only emergency vet in the state. So grateful for them. My 5 pound chihuahua had been sick since a Sunday and was progressively getting worse and worse as the week went on. I wasn't sure if she had a stomach bug or what. I called our normal vet on a Wednesday after she showed no signs of improvement despite at home care, and they couldn't see us that day. They referred us to Midnight Sun, who when I called, also couldn't see us that day. Based off of my dogs symptoms, Midnight Sun recommended taking my dog to the emergency clinic. I called the clinic, explained what was happening, and they said to come in. I got there around 9 am Wednesday morning and there was only 1 patient ahead of me. The front desk staff was very kind, helped me check in, and I waited about 1.5 hours in the waiting room before being seen. A few patients came in after us and were more urgent than our case, therefore were seen before us. The vet tech that helped us was fantastic. I wish I had remembered their name because they were so kind, straight forward, thorough and treated my dog with love and care. They were actually able to pretty much diagnose what was going on, but said the Dr would be in shortly to go over our options after dealing with some additional emergency cases. I think I waited maybe 30 minutes between getting into our room, meeting with the tech, to when the Dr came in. The Dr was SO incredibly kind and caring. Honestly I liked her more than the vet we've been going to. After meeting with her, I felt like my dog was in really good hands despite how uncertain and scary the situation was. The vet tech came back into our room, explained that they thought my dog either had pancreatitis or an abcessed anal gland, went over the entire list of treatment options/diagnostics/cost estimate. I ended up having to leave my dog at the clinic for several hours and she had emergency surgery to drain and cleanse an anal abcess. From checking in at 9 am, the clinic called me to pick my dog up around 2 pm. They explained everything they did to her, and sent us home with some take home medication and aftercare instructions. I am so grateful and blown away by the kindness, compassion, and care everyone at this clinic displayed towards my sweet chihuahua. The front desk staff told me they kept her up front at the check in desk with them as she was waking up from the sedation. It's so scary when our innocent pets are sick. I truly felt my dog was safe in their care and trusted the Dr to ensure her safety during sedation and the procedure. ADDITIONALLY - the cost of emergency treatment was substantially less than what I had anticipated. The whole ordeal cost me $1,200, which included a military discount. I was pretty shocked at this, because our normal vet in Anchorage quoted us between $2K-$4K just for a routine dental cleaning. I just think it's kind of odd that the emergency treatment ended up costing less than a routine dental cleaning. I'm extremely grateful and my chihuahua is on the road to recovery thanks to these guys. read more

I've brought two pets here, one needing to be euthanized and I agree with the comments that the staff is amazing. The prices are not. I do appreciate them being open 24/7 as well. My cat had cancer and was nearing the end of his time. We had an appointment scheduled for Friday but he took a turn and I knew he wouldn't make it so we spent the entire day with him and brought him in in the evening. Over the phone I was quoted $195. I brought $300 with me, all I have until my next paycheck. They asked if I wanted ashes back and I desperately did but it would've taken the price to $343. I told them I only had $300 and they offered to take off the ashes and do a paw print or a nose print. I agreed on a nose print and it took the final price to $266. All I wanted was to bring my baby back home with me. They did make the experience as nice as they could for both of us. I just wish the prices weren't so high. It could have been worse though - my regular vet wanted to charge about $588 for it. Which would've included a $100 exam, $160 for the procedure, and the remaining cost for cremation and a paw print and none of it was optional. People should be able to take their pets ashes home. I wish they would've at least worked with me a little on it, maybe take my $300 and have me pay the rest when I come back or find a way to make it $300. I was only $43 short. It's been such a rough year and especially a rough December. My good friend passed away two weeks before Christmas, my sisters house burned down, the day after Christmas I find out my cat is nearing the end of his life, and on top of helping replace things for my sister and helping take care of them it was just the holidays so money is already tight enough. It felt like I failed a little bit hearing I was only $43 short from taking my baby's ashes home. read more

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. My friend's dog was puking worms nonstop, and when taken here, they brushed it off and refused to help. We later found out she had a serious blockage in her intestines (from another clinic). How is that not an emergency? The staff here are apathetic, careless, and completely lacking compassion. The two ladies up front were also constantly being rude, and making faces towards us. They act like they're running a business, not an emergency hospital. Poor people deserve not to have their hearts ripped out too. My dog was beyond saving, and I was willing to do anything for her- even when I was quoted SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS for a 2 day hospitalization, not even including a surgery, even knowing she was beyond repair. Recently our miniature schnauzer ingested something toxic. We don't know exactly what it was but rushed her to the PET clinic once she showed symtpoms. Arrived around 5:50 pm, my dog had been violently sick throwing up worms since 4am. My husband had called and was told that since she was throwing them up we needed to bring her in sometime the same day, that they could get her in within 10-15 minutes. My dog and I were then placed in the quarantine room for about 3 hours. I then said that we could wait in the car as my phone was dying. During our stay in the quarantine room my dog was consistently throwing up still. At the time we arrived there was only one person ahead of us. I asked a few times when she could be seen as she was obviously not okay, i had to carry her back to the car as she was panting and whining in pain. Waited in the car for another 2 hours. Continued to vomit in the car I walked in upset asking again when she could be seen. Was then told that she was "not a priority". I was then just handed puppy pads and paper towels. After waiting another hour I left to find another emergency vet as they clearly didn't care. My dog proceeded to start popping blood shortly after we left. After driving an hour to another place that would actually care for her she was hospitalized from an obstruction from the worms she had been throwing up. Absolutely infuriating. The negligence and just being brushed off like we were nothing was absolutely ridiculous. Do better I could have lost my dog. read more

I've had a few experiences with this place, from bringing animals in to other's bringing their animals in, and in a pinch this place delivers. Recently, new neighbors moved in and let their cats out. I've had to let them know to keep their cats out of my yard due to my having to chase them away from my trees with nesting feathered families (yes, am looking into deterrents). So, public service announcement, if Bird Treatment and Learning Center is closed bring them here and they will stabilize bird until Bird TLC is open. This place also takes other injured animals and specialty surgeries. Once, I did have to pay for a dog bite my pet gave another , and it was settled easily. I wish I could deal with some people with a bite like dogs do sometimes, but here we are. (I'm looking at you, crazy cat lady). Will come again when necessary. read more

I called PET when we left our remote property and told them our situation (pyometra) and that we were coming in, we got there in about 3 hours (2:15 am). It was 3:30 am before a tech came out to take my dog's temperature. While we were waiting, I was wiping up their floor because she was just lying in the waiting room. The tech offered us a towel for her to lay on and told me that the doctor had just finished a procedure and would see us shortly. At 6 am, I asked the receptionist about the doctor's schedule. Jose told me we would have to wait until after the shift change and after they completed rounds. By 6:30, I knew that Tier 1 would be opening soon, so I left with her. Not 5 minutes after I left, I received multiple calls from PET staff saying, "oh, we are ready to see you. We saw that you left, but if you just come on back and let us know what is going on..." I took her to Tier 1 and within 30 minutes, she was prepped for emergency surgery, and within 2 hours, she was in recovery. I get that PET is the only 24-hour emergency room for pets in Alaska. But if you have ANY other option, please take it. It may say 24-hour emergency, but it is not that. read more

We drove over an hour to take our cat here because they were the only emergency veterinarian office open at 1:00am. They were extremely helpful and immediately took our baby to the back. Within thirty minutes we spoke with the Doctor who explained to us what needed to be done. We left our baby overnight and returned the following day. The dayshift staff was pleasant and explained in great detail what we needed to do at home for her. Was not idea to drive to Anchorage, but it was a great decision. All they would say is you have 2 people ahead of you and we take critical cases first. They made no effort at all during that time to let me know how it was going. After 8 hours they wouldn't even tell me a guesstimate for how much longer. I left, went home, and regrouped and got him to a different vet. He had to be euthanized because he was too far gone. Additionally he suffered for 8 hours laying in a cold car. If you're not going to take care of critical cases, what are you there for?! I will never forgive you for the way you treated us and our beloved pet. I will make it my mission to spread the story about the "care" you gave our family. My dig had suffered an attack. I was hysterical. My life has been crazy like everyone else's during this pandemic. A lot of stress- hubby got job transfer, house renovation, getting ready to sell, living apart, zooming with 2nd graders daily, craziness to the Max. The vet was rude, cold and lacked empathy. When I expressed my concern for her obvious lack of bedside manner while treated my loved one, I was told, "Oh we are sorry, she's our best vet. It's been a stressful night. Normally she isn't like that." First, YOU ARE AN ER VET!! Every night is stressful. You chose that occupation. That is no excuse. I teach. Usually, I teach in a classroom, however this year has been 100% stressful and NOT what I signed up for, so please save your sorry excuse for someone else. After surgery, my dog was sent home with me. Two days later she had pus oozing from the other side of her neck. I decided to try Midnight Sun instead. They were surprised that the vet at Pet ER had totally missed the puncture wounds on the other side of my dog's neck. She had to undergo a second surgery in less that 72 hours, which cost a ridiculous amount (less than PET ER, thankfully ). Incompetent and lack compassion. This place needs more veterinarians. When you have to sit in your car for SIX hours just so you can euthanize your dog there is something seriously wrong there. The parking lot is no where near full either. The woman at the front desk was rather indifferent and unapologetic. They obviously don't mind dragging out what is quite possibly one of the hardest days of your life. Don't bother coming here unless you have an actual emergency because if you need to put your dog down you are going to be super low on the totem pole. My husband and I have had to visit this place 6-7 times for 2 different pets and have had unpleasant experiences each time. For the record, neither of our situations were dire emergencies and overall our pets were treated. $ wasn't a problem for us either so although we noticed the bills being expensive, it doesn't affect our opinion. The reason for the low rating was simply due to the customer service. Some of the front desk staff is incredibly moody and rude both on the phone and in person. If your going to work for an animal hospital you should expect to work with customers who are emotionally charged and want to handle those situations with grace. This place is not warm and inviting by any means, in fact we experienced the complete opposite - very cold and nonchalant, even condescending at times. There were 2 folks in particular that just put a bad taste in our mouth every time. A younger blonde girl that appeared to be a front desk staff only, and then an older blonde lady who seemed to work the front desk and in the back (maybe a vet tech?). Either way I have dealt with these women multiple times on the phone and in person and it's just been an off putting experience every time. Even hearing them answer the phone to other people while I was in the building made me so angry. If we had a choice we would not take our pets here but seems to be the only viable 24hr option in town and is who our primary vet uses. We would not recommend this place to friends or acquaintances if it could be avoided. read more

We had to take our dog here last night after a cyst ruptured on her back. Midnight Sun was an incredibly long wait time and Tier One was closed. Despite my hesitancy, it ended up being a great visit! We ended up waiting for an hour and a half and our appointment took about 30 minutes. It was a slow night, there were only two people ahead of us, so I'm sure that helped. The staff was incredibly friendly and kind, and we had a great experience there. Our dog got sent home with a cone, antibiotics, and anti inflammatory meds. The visit costed about $280 which is about what I would expect to pay at an emergency vet. I do get the impression that this is a "first come first serve" vet despite emergency level, if you have a true emergency I would call multiple emergency vets and see which one could get you in first. Our dog wasn't a true emergency, so we did not mind waiting. read more

Never take your pet here. My dog was choking and had collapsed, rushed him here and he was immediately rushed into the back by the only caring nurse there. Wish I got her name, she was younger and had piercings. Thank you I am very grateful for you. What made our experience bad there was the careless front desk ladies, their was 2 of them and the actual Veterinarian doctor. They couldn't tell me if my dog had choked on anything or if he had suffered a seizure but had cleared his nose an airway an had put in a IV, saw him for less than 20 mins and already had a $1600 bill. I asked what they think had happen to him an was given no answers, said he didn't need X-rays because his airways sounded fine. So I asked why is this bill so high?, she said she wanted to hospitalize him for the night an those were the possible medications he'd need overnight. I asked so I'm being billed for something that hasn't even happened yet?. I asked how he was and she said he's up an walking around. So we made the decision to take him home an observe him ourselves. They said well you need to pay for the IV in full. The one they put in and never used!. That's was $454. Really felt like they didn't care about my pet, just wanted to get as much money from me without giving us any answers. read more

I took my dog in because he had something stuck in his paw that I couldn't get out. When I got him back he was acting really weird and unusual on top of that he had a very bad smell coming from his fur almost like they poured chemical on him. He wasn't eating, drinking water, or using the bathroom. So I took him back and they told me that I had to wait 6 hours and leave my dog In since the doctor was busy, so I waited in the parking lot and 3 hours later he passed away. These people are dangerous almost as if they hate pets and their job. I am shocked on how horrible their service is and has been. I will forever regret taking my beloved cat to this place. They made Buddy and I wait 12 hours before they admitted him. They continuously told me they were receiving critical animals that needed immediate attention but I never saw anything of the sort. When they finally did see Buddy they told me I could wait some more while they ran their tests which at that point I just wanted to go home I was hungry and tired so I made a terrible decision and left Buddy there to be hospitalized. First of all, I just want to say that the night crew earned a 10/10 from me. I can't say the same about the day crew. My cat wasn't feeling well at night and we received the A+ treatment we expected. The night crew was extremely kind, courteous, and respectful. They took care of us and got the job done in a timely manner. I was 100% happy with how the night crew handled the whole situation. The following day we returned to pick up our cat after surgery. When we walked through the doors to the counter, the 3 females in the front watched us walk in, and continued having a conversation. After a couple of minutes one of them decided to ask us why we were there. Not even a greeting of any sort. While we were talking to the lady, there was another staff member behind her just staring at us. It was hard to not notice. Her eyes were hateful and judgmental. She gave us an eerie vibe that was completely unsettling. That stare alone made me not want to come back. What's worse is she stared at us until we left. God forbid I hope I never have to come back. It may sound like I'm asking for too much, but I'm really not. People walk in there because their fur babies are not in the best condition. The staff should be understanding of this and be supportive and attentive to customers. That being sad, the day crew needs to take notes from the night crew. If the lady who stared at me reads this, you need to get a job that's not dealing directly with customers. Get a job in the back so you no longer can stare at people while judging them. read more

Worst pet emergency in anchorage. Your dog could be dying with parvo or some other terrible infection but if the only symptoms are bloody diarrhea, lethargy, not eating - this is not an emergency to them. You will wait hours or possibly all day and if you ask how long the wait will be, they will lecture you on their process of being a pet emergency walk in... all their availability is based on how the emergency ranks on a tier. And diarrhea "is not an emergency". They will tell you yeah we can get you in, come on down now - but then you show up and they will say it will be hours and if you leave - you lose your place. You have to wait. This happened to me a year ago with my older dog who I was worried was dying, they made me wait from 8am - 4pm. And when I questioned their process around noon they just said it shouldn't be too much longer, if you don't like it - leave. When we finally saw the vet, the vet actually examined my dog and apologized on behalf of their shoddy judgment at the front desk and said my dog should have been escalated to be seen in the morning due to her stage of illness and age. Today my 9.5 week old puppy was showing signs of being very ill. I decided I should take her to pet emergency. I thought the other time around a year ago had to have been a fluke in judgment and it wouldn't happen twice. Nope! Same old shit from this office. - Come on down! Show up, they do not care, tell me I can wait in the front lobby or my car. So I ask to speak with a tech about how long the wait will be and she tells me it shouldn't be too long. I ask her what her idea of "not to long is" and she tells me 3 hours. And I tell her- to me, that is a long time, especially with a sick puppy. To which she says, if you don't want to wait you can go to another vet. I let her know that it wasn't just not wanting to wait - when they tell me to come down, I'm under the impression I'm getting right in, if I had been given a heads up on the wait, I could have been more prepared, my puppy didn't have water, food, puppy pads, etc. I also assumed since I was getting right in that I didn't need to call various other vets to see if I could get in sooner. I wasted an hour answering questions on the phone, getting there, filling out paperwork and re answering the same questions again and waiting to speak to a vet or a tech before they told me maybe 3 hours? Everyone that works here appears to be around 20 and have no empathy for sick pets nor do they seem to care about inconveniencing people - customers. They talk like they aren't able to use judgment - as if they've been given a script to deal with everyone in the same way. I decided to call midnight sun, and got right in. Midnight sun said my puppy's symptoms sounded enough like parvo that they didn't want to take chances and marked her as needing urgent care. They were prompt! So caring and empathetic! Very reasonably priced! And got us in, tests run, and out in an hour or so. It wasn't parvo, but it was a bacterial infection that would not be able to resolve on its own and did need urgent care. I still feel so angry at Pet ER, but all we can do when we aren't happy with bad business is choose to not give them our money. So, I'll never go here again. Never. And I was torn about leaving this review... I don't like giving bad reviews, I usually just don't say anything if I'm unhappy. I like giving good reviews and I'll happily rave about a 4-5 star experience. But when it comes to peoples pets - creatures that we consider family - to be lectured on a tier of urgency when your baby animal looks like the life is fading out of their eyes - it's just incomprehensible how these people can be so cold and uncaring. Waste of 4 hours there to only find the severity of our cats symptoms online. Only take your animal there if they are truest dying then they will see you. read more

Staff are incredibly competent and the doc saw my Chessy as soon as he could. Will travel 50-mi there again if it is necessary! Thanks.
