I normally love VCA clinics. And my primary one is the Centreville VCA, but while I am down here at school I needed a secondary clinic and I thought VCA would be a good option so I tried this Little Creek Location. So I booked it a week or two in advance, and properly gave anxiety meds to my very loved but older cat and dog. I love them as much as any other caring pet owner, but I have also worked with dogs for 6 years now and I have never been treated like I have at this place. I'm on my way to the clinic on time, as it is just down the road, but I am stopped by the train on the way. And then as I get past the train after waiting for a while I had to get past an accident, and long story short I was late. I was 20 minutes late. And the receptionist lady was so very not empathetic, and the thing is I totally wouldn't have cared, except this time I had two drugged up babies with no where to go. I was so sad, and it was such a waste. And I will never go to this location again. read more

I sincerely wish I could give zero stars. I brought a rescue dog into this location several years ago. She was seen twice. The first appointment was in November and they persuaded me to sign up for their "animal care plan" (DO NOT do this it's a complete scam.) When I got home and did some research, I asked to have that cancelled. I was told that it had been. I then brought my dog in one more time (all routine care here) and was told that in fact the plan had not been cancelled but would be. I paid at that time and asked AGAIN to have the plan cancelled. The kicker is that ALL the care was completely routine. They charged me for a "microchip" when the dog came from the SPCA micro chipped. They charged me for vaccines she already had. They took advantage of us. I switched providers for my other dogs and have not been back. Fast forward 3 years. Suddenly a $300 charge has showed up on my credit report. It's through a completely different third party and owed to another third party. When I finally tracked down the issue, I found out that it was VCA. I called VCA and the vet office told me that they "don't handle the accounts" and that the care club had a different telephone number. I called the number, and *surprise* was told the hospital was responsible for the charges. The hospital told me "no managers are available" when I called them back and then ALBERT who answered the phone hung up on me. They sincerely were breezy and chill about me writing this very review. They DO NOT CARE AT ALL. You're going to want to AVOID this place at all costs because in the end it's not about your pet it's about their billing and the "care club" cares about your wallet. Not your pet. They got my $300. They will NEVER get another dime. BEWARE. read more

I have nothing against the staff they're really nice but it all seems too scripted and not enough information about my dogs health. It seems to me VCA's only concern is the dollar. Me and my wife are in our early twenties and feel taken advantage of every time we bring our dog in. First pet visit was $240 for antibiotics that only work temporarily and the last time we brought him in it was $290 for antibiotics and some medicated shampoo. All these pet visits and still no real explanation to what is causing my dog to have the symptoms he is having. I'm quite disappointed with VCA Animal Care Center on Little Creek Road in Norfolk, VA. I feel as if I've been scammed and taken advantage of by answering an ad for a free initial vet visit for my dog. Today the experience was anything but kind or friendly; rather, it was as if I'd just signed up to listen to a multi-marketing quick money-making scam. When I decided to forego all the additional medication and recommendations (totally over $200) I was informed that I'd need to pay for a sick visit because the vet looked at my dog's itching issue which no longer made it a wellness visit. I was so infuriated. Why would I ever choose a place that treats the owners of their loved pets who clearly do not care about us or our pets but really at the end of the day making more money. The floor was incredibly sticky too. I felt as if I was in a clinic in a 3rd world country. I highly recommend avoiding VCA Animal Care Center at all costs. When my dog tested + for heartworm, one of the vets called me afterhours to discuss options. They helped me establish a course of action/treatment rather than sell me with scare tactics. Routinely bring our dog here and we have always received good service. We often times have to kennel her when away and they always take good care of her. I woke up to my cat being unable to walk. I brought him to this location by mistake. The tech is immediately more concerned about setting up appointments for his shots, which he already had or will receive from the Newport News location. She then pulls out a treatment plan of nearly $800 to examine the little kitten. Long story short, a cat with a broken femur is sent home with 2 ibuprofen and an x-Ray, at a cost to me of over $500 (I declined their offer of having an external radiographer interpret the X-ray, and declined the antibiotics). The tech and vet also claimed the break was due to abuse in the household (imagine the tension this caused among those living in the home). They suggested we go to Blue Pearl, which was the only useful suggestion they had. Do not give your business to this branch of the VCA. Go straight to Blue Pearl, where they actually care about the comfort of their patients. (Imagine going to the ER with a broken femur and being told that 2 ibuprofen should get you through the pain, in addition to an enormous bill, all for no treatment whatsoever.) The vet at this clinic is a disgrace to the profession. Do not give your business to these con artists who are simply out to profit off the vulnerable owners of sick animals. read more

I have been taking my cat here for the last five years. It is conveniently located, only ten minutes from my house. The doctors here are very knowledgable and have always made great observations and recommendations regarding my pet's health. The staff is incredibly caring about every single pet. Recently, I scheduled my cat for a feline dental cleaning (something that all cat owners should be proactive on) and she ended up having a couple lesions removed. The doctor called me right away to make sure that this was something that I wanted to proceed with and removed and was able to promptly complete the procedure. They called when she was out of the procedure and explained everything. I was able to pick her up a few hours after and they provided her with the proper medication to keep her comfortable. Within a day, my cat was back to her old self. I felt very comfortable and safe with them caring for my pet. read more

We moved to Norfolk and got a puppy. A friend recommended VCA in Norfolk. We took our puppy for his first visit and we are very impressed. The facility is clean and well designed. The front desk staff were nice and efficient. The tech (Jessie) who weighed our pup was very personable and the puppy loved her. Dr. Thompson was super! He took his time with the puppy and thoroughly examined him and continued with the puppy's shot schedule and wellness routine. He called the next day to make sure the puppy was doing well from his vaccine. There was no hard sell for products...insurance was mentioned and there are food and toy items to buy if you want them. I have taken both my dogs to VCA on Little Creek for ten years, and I highly recommend the clinic for both the trusting knowledge all professionals there give and the obvious caring respect they give to you and your pets. Veterinarian Dr. Thompson has at VCA there since I started there; he always conducts a thoroughly reliable examination, explains conditions found clearly and gives options for treatment. The vet technicians there do their jobs with obvious love for animals, and one who tends to your pet with Dr.Thompson always give you a follow-up call the next day to see how your dog or cat is doing. My beloved boxer Joshua succumbed to cancer after a year. I had to bring him many times as he struggled, and because I didn't always have the amount of money for some visits, the office manager allowed me a promissory note to help continue Joshua's treatments. We weren't established patients at VCA, but after a call to them to let them know the botch job and terrible, horrific service at the norfolk spca vet clinic, (her incision was wide open as they don't use stitches at norfolk spca, she's infected, and it was life threatening and the norfolk spca never returned my 3 calls and when i took her there yesterday morning, they just didn't care). You guys openly took us in as walk in and the receptionist, the vet, i'm sorry i forgot his name, and the nurse were so accommodating and nice. They explained everything to me. They had to redo the surgery yesterday and let me say, my cat is so much better! She's easily taking her pain meds and antibiotics. I'm tearing up as I type this! Yes, this cost a lot, but it wouldn't have happened if the *@#! norfolk spca would have done their job!! Don't ever take pets to the Norfolk SPCA vet clinic for any kind of surgery. everytime we went there, it seemed very money oriented. when concerns were voiced about the health of my dog, it was ignored, over attempts to push for surgeries. finally, when my baby was failing due to a straw being stuck in his throat, we were sent way out in va beach after being put on hold for several minutes. needless to say my dog died on the way out there, and I will never recover. if you want your dog to stay I healthy I suggest going across the street to friendship vet they actually care about your animal's health. read more

Lacking in care! I was not pleased at all with this VCA hospital after loving my VCA hospital in Washington State. My dog had surgery there for a bump removal and they did not even call to check on her! They scheduled an appointment time for me to pick up my dog after the surgery because the vet wanted to meet with me, when I got there the vet had left early! They never called me with biopsy results I had to call them over and over, at which point another vet finally called me back to let me know the removal was cancerous. They will also sell you on Simple Guard Flea Topical Treatment-do not buy it!! Read reviews online first! It is greasy and does not work. My dog had an allergic reaction to it and they wouldn't even return the unopened treatments stating "we don't return prescriptions". I can understand not returning medication that has been opened, but these are totally sealed. I have already changed vet hospitals, but I'm so disappointed I have to let others know-find another vet hospital! read more

We went for our first visit and the staff were very friendly and my cat received good care but we have decided not to go back. The exam room was dirty, even the mat on the exam table was grubby. An additional $500 worth of unnecessary services were recommended and the appointment took an hour and a half complete. We have two dogs, a pug and a french bulldog, which we took to VCA for all their shots, as well as to have them boarded. It was always a pleasure to take them to VCA, even the dogs were excited to be there. We never had any worries about leaving the dogs for a couple days as the staff is attentive and caring. The vet techs were always very excited to see the dogs and knew our whole family by name. On the few times we called with medical or behavioral questions, Dr. Thompson was always very quick to respond and gave us great advice. We almost exclusively saw Dr. Thompson, who is wonderful, knowledgeable, personable and obviously cared about our dogs. We had to move out of the area and are sad to have to find a new vet because our experience at VCA was so positive. read more

I have been going to this vet for at least 10 years (and have really loved some vets there quite a bit). We started having some problems the last few months, but we never expected this. I scheduled appointments for my two 6 week old kittens. We waited more than a half an hour. When we asked the receptionsit how much longer she said the vet was in surgery and she said the vet had scheduled surgery when my appointment was. She then said I could talk to the manager about it. Ten minutes later we were called into a room to speak with the practice manager. I asked her about the surgery. She asked about the recent troubles and as I was explaining about our pets she yelled that she was going to get the other files and slamed the door hard enough the papers flew. We were shocked. We started to hear some arguing and then the medical director came through the door and said when my staff is upset I'm upset and my staff will not be treated this way. I didn'tcome in here to argue is what we heard when I said I didnt understand. My jaw dropped. I am friends with my doctors, bank tellers, the really wonderful folks at my Chick-fil-A. I mentioned the other vet's great bedside manner and the really good rapport we seemed to have, but that we had previously requested to not see him anymore as he had challenges diagnosing and coming with a treatment plan for our pets (ended up going to another vet for one pet and another died before we got the correct treatment). We had made that request when I spoke with the medical director in May, at which time she asked me to give them another chance and she would waive the fee for that visit if we came back. She then asked if we wanted the records for all our pets copied for a new vet. Despite being in our neighborhood, I now join the growing list of folks who won't be returning. read more
