Sally in her O2 chamber. They let us get some pets in before we had to leave her for the night

No one wants to take their pet to the ER, but if you do, I can't recommend VCA enough! We brought our cat in on a Sunday night--the staff quickly determined she was going into heart failure and started treating her right away. The entire staff was so kind, and the doctors took the time to explain everything they were doing and answered our questions. We had to leave Sally overnight, and the staff was great about returning my calls and giving me updates. VCA worked with our regular vet to make sure Sally would get proper care when she was discharged. So far, she's doing great! We're so thankful to VCA to giving us more time with our girl

SAVING MY CHLOE CHF EPISODE. 04-02-25 - One night in the early hours I rushed my dog to this emergency hospital over all the others because it's one I'm familiar with, less busy (busy but less busy than the others) and I've always had a good experience here. This time he was truly an urgent matter. My dog has had murmur for years and has been well managed - takes Vetmedin 2x a day every 12hrs and have an annual echocardiograms at her normal vet office. She had this scary cough that woke me up at 02:30am but her energy was normal, little bit of panting, gums are pink. She was drinking and taking treats from me. But I noticed a faint crackling in her breathing which was not normal and I sped her to emergency. My dog has anxiety so if she is separated from me or we enter a vet or groomer facility she goes into panic mode. This likely triggered her breathing and heart rate. She was immediately put in the Oxygen chamber, was asked if they can sedate her (keep her calm so they can do the testing and X-rays). She was then Oxygen Dependent and was diagnosed with CHF (congestive heart failure). We took it 24hrs at a time as she fought for her life. After 12hrs of being in the oxygen chamber she was able to breathe on her own. She was able to be discharged later that evening but since I paid an arm and leg, i felt more at ease if she was there overnight. Picked her up at 7am the next day and she was a zombie form sedation and meds. Discharged with now adding Furosemide (diuretic) to her daily medications every 12hrs for the rest of her life. Also prescribed anxiety meds (tranquilizers) before any vet, groomer, or exciting events due to CHF. Was told after a week to schedule an appointment with her vet which then attempted to lower the dosage of furosemide because the initial dosage is making the kidney values elevated. RELAPSE. 04/9/25 - 24hrs of reducing the dosage my dog again had the scary coughing but gum color good and resting heart rate normal. But the coughs a starting at 3am again. Rushed to emergency, same drill, put her on oxygen chamber, sedate, X-rays, inject more furosemide, etc. This time no CHF episode and not Oxygen dependent but there was fluid built up. Was told to go back to the initial dosage of furosemide. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I've been told by emergency vet and regular vet that the coughs are expected with CHF and the coughs could be a factor or some fluid build up, her heart is big pushing on her bronchial tubes and trachea, etc.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Or how she's positioned when she sleeps and when she gets up can trigger it (suggest to try and elevate her head when sleeping). And the most important thing to monitor is her resting breathing rate. Also was told this emergency doesn't have a cardiologist team onsite and the Hotel Circle location does - so I have options. Talked with emergency vet about what to do because CHF has no cure and it only gets worse. And her condition and where it's at. ANOTHER SCARE 04/14/25 (5-days later), 2:30am scary coughs were back but gums pink and resting breathing rate normal. I gave it some time but it wasn't calming down and was going to Emergency for guidance. We arrived at 3am and nobody was there the doors were locked. But this is a 24/7 Hospital. I knocked, door belled, called, walked around the hospital. I called the bigger hospital VCA Hotel Circle and they tried to make contact too with no answer. I left and went to VCA Hotel Circle. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I hope someone can explain this. That was VERY strange.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

While on vacation, my dog Callie suddenly began limping and was clearly in incredible pain. Even though we were far from home, I didn't hesitate--I drove 8 hours back because I knew the only place I fully trusted for her care was VCA. Callie has been a neurology patient at VCA since 2022, and I can't speak highly enough about the incredible team there. Dr. Geiger, Dr. Biegan, and all the amazing neuro techs have provided her with consistent, compassionate, and expert care. Over the years, we've also been supported by Dr. Jackson, Dr. Jones, Dr. Michael, and numerous ER doctors--each one going above and beyond to make sure Callie is comfortable and cared for. Knowing she is in the hands of such dedicated professionals gives me peace of mind every single time. Thank you to the entire VCA team for your commitment, kindness, and exceptional care.

It's been 5 years since I took my pitbull here for chemotherapy for lymphoma. She developed a horrible infection due to her weakened immune system. When I took her for the next treatment and pointed out the infection I was told "the infection isn't our problem." Long story short, four days after her last treatment she died. The day she died VCA called and asked why I missed her chemo treatment. When I informed the woman on the phone of my pets death that morning, I was told "oh, okay" then click and she hung up. Take what you will from this but I feel as though this particular pet hospital is more concerned with profits than pet health. But, this is to be expected from a vet hospital owned by a corporation (Mars Inc.).I would not let this veterinary oncologist give my dog so much as a rabies shot. Use at your own risk. Photo is Lucy on her last day.

Ask the Community - VCA Animal Specialty Group

Are abdominal single cavity ultrasounds performed here? What is the cost?

Hi Linda, thank you for your inquiry. We would be happy to answer your question regarding our services and pricing. In order to fully understand your medical situation and provide you with the most precise estimate, please give us a call at (858)…

French bulldog (or any bulldog) owners, how has your experience been?

Is there a VCA location that does show level ear cropping? If so what location and whom? Thanks

    I certainly hope not.

Has anyone had Dr Gregory Jackson perform ACL surgery in a large dog? Was the outcome favorable?

So I didn't have an ACL surgery but if it helps, he performed surgery on my Husky's broken femur. She's doing well so far, still doesn't put all her weight on it but she runs and plays like she did before. Hope that helps

I knew that I would not make it to her regular vet before closing time and the closest VEG (to my location) was the Mission Valley location so I loaded Molly in my car and we made the short drive to Mission Valley. The VEG Mission Valley location is just across the parking lot from Mimi's Cafe and was super easy to find. We walked in and someone immediately came over to triage Molly before it was the doctor's turn to give her a full exam. Dr. Bronstein was awesome and explained everything in great detail. While I was waiting for Molly's treatment plan, an emergency came in and it was all hands on deck to help the dog out. Everyone ran over to help and not one person working there complained. I could tell that they really care about animals. When the doctor was finished, he came over and apologized for the wait and I said not to worry about it since that was a priority issue. He gave me the treatment plan which I approved and it was just a short amount of time until I got the prescriptions and receipt/medical notes (for insurance) and I was out the door. I would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Bronstein and the staff that helped me this past Friday evening for your kindness and for helping my "little one" out. They helped us remain calm and made a quick action plan. Everyone we interacted with was wonderful and the staff really makes VEG what it is! Thank you!! Ironically I've spent the past 5 years designing veterinary clinics and specialty hospitals, and the owners had a strong desire to maintain the separation from public facing to the treatment areas. I must say as someone experiencing having a pet emergency, being able to be in the open treatment area was the reason we felt so satisfied with the care. We were visually connected to our baby boy and got to be a part of every step of his treatments. It made us feel at ease, and felt entirely different (in the best way) than we've ever had at other veterinary practices. Design matters and can really make a huge impact- so props to the team for going with the open plan! I hope to see more of this in the future, transparency builds trust. Goodwork VEG!

I recently lost my pet due to an illness that although was aggressive was seemingly missed by the team here until it was too late. There were red flags over the span of multiple months that should have been caught but were disregarded as unrelated issues. They were however, happy to charge me for services that ultimately did not contribute to my pet's health outcome. Again, if youre looking for a place for a young pet this place is adequate enough. It's obvious they are all about revenue and do NOT advocate for your pet. I'm guessing they are awarded commission for every pet they can quickly extinguish, to make room for the moneymaking surgical patients in the waiting room. We paid $3,500 plus $500 for them to care for our very sick baby girl, and they left her to LITERALLY bleed to death in her cage. She came into this "hospital" at 5:00pm June 4. She was in shock. Barely alive. It came on suddenly and we had no idea what had happened. They started out good. They did fluid resuscitation and she came back. Her eyes were open. She was breathing easy. She had purposeful movement. We were grateful, we had hope. But then it became a nightmare. They suspected she had internal bleeding of some sort since she was extremely anemic. Or maybe cancer? They needed to do an abdominal ultrasound to correctly diagnose her..and start appropriate treatment. The remote radiologist that read her X-rays said an ultrasound would help to diagnose a "hazy" appearance across her abdomen. We were ready to give them more money! Just save our precious baby. And then we were told THEY HAVE NO IN-HOUSE ABILITY TO DO AN EMERGENCY ULTRASOUND. We were told it couldn't be done until after 3:00pm the next day. That's when a radiologist comes in everyday and does all the ultrasounds ordered. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! How did they pass accreditation for an emergency facility? It's criminal. Our companion, our best friend was bleeding somewhere and they thought it was ok to wait another 17 hours until an outside radiologist comes around. Well, it wasn't ok and she didn't make it. She was put into a cage surrounded by dogs. (She's terrified of them. She's an indoor cat her entire life). Had a plastic head cone put on. Loaded her up on barbiturates because they thought they saw "seizures".... And then forgot to give my grossly anemic baby any supplemental oxygen and IGNORED her dramatic drops in her labs. And also ignored her blood sugar of 345-450 and her very abnormal blood gas. It was obvious at 3:00am on June 5, that she needed a blood transfusion and immediate diagnostic intervention. Maybe even surgical intervention. But there is nothing on her chart that indicates the veterinarians in the hospital were notified. In fact, I'm not even sure there were any doctors in there during the night. I was at her bedside from 1:00am to about 2:30am and I never saw a doctor anywhere. In fact I never met the nurse or whoever it was that was taking "care" of her. I have a gut feeling there were mostly unlicensed staff running that facility. The charting is horrific and barely legible. She continued to lose blood somewhere. Her labs clearly showed she was dying, as they became progressively worse throughout the night. And no doctor came to help her. And the person caring for her thought it was a good idea to assess a patient in acute shock every 6 hours. Obviously they never touched her abdomen because when she finally crashed at 1000am, the doctor described her abdomen as distended, tight and painful. I guarantee this is NOT standard protocol. A patient this sick needed assessments every 1-2 hours. WE When the AM came, Dr Chen halfway assessed her and then messaged my son at 0800 with a positive report. "Her pupils are normal. She looks much better. She's ok to go see her veterinarian" Evidently she missed the labs that showed critically low levels of hemoglobin carrying cells. Which means she was laying there with a belly full of blood. And according to the other labs, every organ was struggling. Two hours later she goes into respiratory arrest and is DEAD. Every body, humans and animals need oxygen carrying cells so our organs don't suffer injury. She died from negligence, failure to diagnose her in a timely manner and incompetence. This place falsely represents itself. It is NOT a full service emergency facility. They do not have the in-house diagnostic equipment to rapidly diagnose and treat. They never did a urinalysis on her either, because they don't have a machine. "It needs to get sent out". A urinalysis is part of almost every initial workup. It is a very important diagnostic tool that is not too difficult to do...yet it can tell you a lot about almost every system. I have not stopped crying. It feels like a nightmare. We are all traumatized and still in shock. Shame on both VCA and Mars Inc. (Yes, the candy bar people own this chain of sh*tty animal hospitals) They have profits in the billions! Surely they can afford appropriate diagnostic equipment for their "emergency pet hospital." And maybe pay for some extra licensed personnel. From the reviews, it looks like they make it a habit of giving substandard care. What a shame. Save your pets lives and keep them away from here.

The room was nice and clean and private and even had a little sign with our names on it as well as the vet's. Too cute! Dr. Del Rosario was amazing -- super kind and caring and sincere, she wanted to know all about Zorro! She got a good plan together and we were out the door within an hour and he's doing great almost a week later. So grateful for her help! I truly can't recommend them highly enough. Thank you for being amazing to us!

The front office staff was great in getting us checked in and also making us feel welcome up front. Veronica is also a great asset to the team. She went over pricing with us and was transparent by showing us the pricing on the iPad rather than reading everything to us outloud. Dr. Skinner is probably the best vet we've been to. She's very empathetic, patient, and knowledgeable. She gave us options rather than making us feel obligated to do all of the tests appropriate for our dog's issue. She showed us his X-rays and was very sweet towards our pup. The place is new - just opened up in December. There's drinks and snacks in their waiting room. The facility is extremely clean and modern. I don't live nearby, but this is definitely a place we would turn to if needed.

I immediately gravitated towards her because she had a way of explaining things that made sense to me. We stayed in touch even after puppy graduation and I would text her from time to time to ask questions or stay in touch. I found her on social media and loved her training information. Then when my now 1.5 year old puppy was full grown and became harder to manage we got back in touch and she'd offer suggestions. Finally when she neared the age of 2 I realized I needed professional help Amillie came in and once again explained things even on our first session in a way I could understand and broke down behaviors for me. I actually have 2 giant breed Greater Swiss mountain dogs and she has helped me with training both of them. Mainly frustration reactivity for my younger female "puppy" and then being able to successfully loose leash walk both of them together (2 strong willed and physically strong, with a combined weight of ~200 lb) female dogs. Each time we meet I leave with so much information. She's been great and I only wish we started training them with Amillie when my girls were younger. You won't regret this partnership or Amillie's expertise. Training comes natural to her. It's a gift and that's with me already having had 2 large breed independent dogs before working with her!
