We adopted a 12 year old dog from the SDHS who was blind from cataracts and deaf. Our previous dog Snickers had injured his eye and our amazing vet referred us here. Brought my baby here over a year ago due to cataracts, doctor was very honest and explained the issue with her eyes. We came up with a long term plan, and I thought we all had a clear understanding of it.. the eye drops she would be on for the remainder of her life to help against glaucoma/ inflammation or irritation. Doctor said any discomfort or changes to please bring her back. So far no changes and no discomfort.. Today I called the front office and spoke to a VERY rude receptionist who refused to help me get a prescription refill of the eyedrops that my baby is on for the remainder of her life.. She told me in order to continue getting a prescription I would need to bring her in to get examined again... hmmmm. So another $200 plus dollars AND no available appointments. TRULY made me realize what this clinic is after, this person did not care about my pet or her wellbeing. She cared about getting me another $200 appointment months later. Dr Strubbe examined her with interest & took great time in explaining what was going on as well as the treatment options to me. As a rescue, my Gracie is fearful of new situations, but Dr Strubbe & staff help her feel safe. He obviously cares about the eye health of Gracie, but is also interested in her comfort at the visit. I want to share my experience to help others make an informed decision about trusting this clinic with their pet's care. Dr. Stubbe performed surgery on my dog, Zeus, and initially, everything seemed fine. He used a pleasant tone, the surgery itself went well, and he followed up afterward, both in person and by phone. The front desk staff was also friendly and accommodating with scheduling. However, what happened with my dog's post-surgery care was shocking and unacceptable. Zeus was sent home with an extremely tight and oversized cone--so long that it extended four inches past his nose. At first, I assumed it was designed that way for extra protection, but I quickly realized something was wrong when he couldn't eat from any dish or even reach his water bowl. The cone was more suited for my Great Dane, not my lab mix. When I called the clinic about the length issue, Dr. Stubbe's response was dismissive: "I saw him, and it was only an inch past his nose." Really, Dr. Stubbe? Do cones magically grow after a dog leaves your office? I sent a picture proving how far it extended. They told me to come in for a shorter one, but instead, I trimmed it myself. Ensuring that it was about an inch past his nose. The cone did not need to come off in order to do this procedure, it was fairly simple. Then, things got worse. Even with the cone at the correct length, Zeus refused to eat. When I finally examined the area under the collar, I was horrified--he had bright red, foul-smelling lesions all around his neck. The tightness of the cone had caused severe irritation and infection. When I called again, Dr. Stubbe claimed that "the collar was at least two finger widths loose around his neck" when he saw it. I made it clear that I did not appreciate their attempt to shift blame onto me and pointed out that Dr. Stubbe must have mistaken my dog for another patient. He had previously stated that when he saw Zeus after surgery, the cone was both loose and the correct length--which was simply not true. Even if I had done exactly what they accused me of--adjusting or removing the cone to trim it shorter the day before--there is no way my dog could have developed open, foul-smelling sores in less than 24 hours. I sent pictures showing the wounds, the overly tight fit, and the absurd cone length. Their response? "Bring him in, and we'll see what we can do." No accountability. No concern. No urgency. At this point, I do not trust them with my dog's care beyond his post-surgery checkup. If you bring your pet here, double-check everything--from the fit of medical devices to the accuracy of what they tell you. I'm beyond disappointed in their lack of responsibility and refusal to acknowledge their mistakes. read more

I didn't realize the growth was creating a small hole in his eye; otherwise, I would have taken him in earlier. Regardless, he got a corneal transplant at VCA Eye Clinic. I was super nervous something would go wrong during surgery, but he came out fine. Took about 2.5-3 months for him to fully recover and all those eye drops, but yesterday was his last check up and the dr. gave him a thumb up! read more

This clinic has a long wait for new patients, but the wait is worth it. The location is in an industrial park next to a Tesla dealer. There is their emergency clinic next door, so make sure you see "eye clinic" above the door before walking in. They do an excellent job of social distancing and everyone on staff was wearing a mask - thank you! I believe they also require patrons to wear a mask since it is a medical facility. Each person on staff was very professional: the front desk staff, the nurses, the doctors - all outgoing and friendly but also knowledgeable and effective communicators. I was able to walk back into the clinic to have a 1:1 with the doctor to go over my dog's eye issue after his exam. She was incredibly detailed in her assessment and I thought her exam was thorough and scientifically sound. Overall, this is a well run establishment and deserves high accolades. read more

Do yourself a favor and listen to the bad reviews and do NOT waste your money here. They are unprofessional and drug pushers. My dog got cherry eye back in January and unfortunately I found this place. It took months to get him but finally, in March, they got him in. Soon after the appointment was made, Brookelyn in the office called to ask if I could move my appointment up 1 week because Dr. Cooper wasn't going to be doing surgery on that day (?), so I said ok. They rescheduled the surgery and they said they rescheduled his post op check ups also, but didn't. He got his surgery and a week later I called the office because i never got a confirmation call for his follow up, turns out they didnt have me on the schedule because Brookelyn didnt move the appointment.... His eye didnt get checked until 3 WEEKS after his surgery when it should have been 1. They left his harness on which we had to cut off him after it irritated his skin and gave him a rash. After keeping him heavily sedated-- they insisted on more and more sedatives-- and in a cone for over 1.5 months, his cherry eye came out. It went away for a few days but i took him in anyways and Dr. Cooper said i didnt know what i was talking about and it couldnt have popped out. Dr. Cooper disregarded the whole thing. A few days later, while still in a cone and sedated, the cherry eye came out for good. It was like pulling teeth trying to get them to call back. Finally after calling and calling we got back in to get checked, and Dr. Cooper said although my husband and i did everything right, we would have to pay for another surgery. I PAID OVER TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS to get it fixed and they couldn't do it correctly. On top of it, Dr. Cooper and the office were trying to get me to buy more sedatives for my 11 month old dog who did not logically need them at all. Anything for an extra buck with them. I have never had such an unprofessional experience with a vet before, i feel like i was robbed and my dog was traumatized. read more

I'm not sure if zero stars works or not, but a negative 4 stars would be appropriate. This is the worst experience we have had with a Vet. Do not choose these people, just because they say they can "get you in." The response I received when I cancelled all my future appointments, including the rescheduled surgery to remove my Mom's dog's eye, was "Ok, no problem." They do not care. I cannot wait to see what their comment is below. My guess is something like "we are so disappointed that you weren't satisfied with your experience, we'd love to discuss this with you in person....blah blah blah." We are out $700 of our $2000 deposit, and I would spend that again to get out of that place. read more

Do not risk your pet's health here. VCA Eye Clinic only cares about their profit. The only positive is that Dr. Strubbe seems quite knowledgeable and competent. Probably the staff is as well, but "they are in high demand." I went forward with cataract surgery, in both eyes, for my dog. The aftercare requires 4 weeks in a hard cone, three eye drops SIX times a day. Medication refills are not a priority for VCA Eye Clinic. On one occasion when we ran out I had to call three times in one day asking them to call the prescription into my local Costco before it was finally done. On the second occasion when the doctor prescribed a new medication (which I opted not to have them fill but to call it in to Costco), I had to call the Business Manager and ask her to call it in. On the third occasion when the doctor recommended that we re-start an oral pain medication, I called only to be told that they were too busy and other prescriptions were ahead of mine. The following day, they didn't notify me until 1:37 that the medication had finally been filled. The surgery after care appointments are scheduled, but I found out when my dog developed problems, they do not have appointments available and they were unable or unwilling to fit us in. In order to be seen I had to call each morning asking for cancellations or one of the few emergency appointments. When I did get an emergency appointment, I was told by the doctor that it was a good thing I got my pet in because she had developed complications including a corneal ulcer. That ulcer grew from barely noticeable to noticeable. I called first thing Tuesday morning asking for a cancellation or emergency appointment and I was told there were none. I called again on Wednesday and was told the same thing. Thursday was Thanksgiving and when I asked if they were open on Friday, I was told they were not. Because VCA did not take my concerns and my pet's aftercare seriously, I watched over the course of 7 days the ulcer grow larger and deeper. It was heartbreaking and mentally stressful to watch this happen and know that the place I trusted with her eyes did not care about her. I did not know where to turn for further opthamology help. Thankfully when I came to leave my review, I found another reviewer mentioned an eye clinic in Sorrento Valley. The new clinic was able to get her in on an emergency basis on Tuesday. They told me that the ulcer was so large and so deep she was at risk of bursting the eye. The options were to remove the eye or attempt a graft. They were able to fit her into surgery the next day in an attempt to save her eye by performing a corneal graft. They were shocked that a clinic who had performed a major eye surgery could/would not take care of an existing client and allowed the pet to suffer. Because VCA did not properly take care of us, my dog progressed to needing another expensive surgery or removing the eye, also an additional expense. Before leaving this review, I again reached out to the Business Manager to tell her that I would be sharing this experience. Once again I was told how it was an issue of (lacking) staffing versus the demand for service. I understand that veterinary ophthalmologists are hard to come by, but priority should be given to existing clients and those with emergency conditions. VCA Business model is apparently simply to take your money without any continuing concern or care for your pet. Corporate VCA should step in and make some major business changes. Focus on something other than the money instead of risking the health of the pets and the mental well-being of their owners. read more

I am absolutely disappointed in this office. My dog was seen over the weekend for an ulcer at VSH Sorrento Valley. I was told to be seen ASAP by my Ophthalmologist for him. I have been going here I think almost two years. On Monday, his was getting worse. I could not get into any vet in the area and at 804 VCA told they weren't taking any appointments and to call tomorrow. I called the next morning, and again at 810 they said they reached their capacity for ER and told me I could book in DECEMBER when I said my dog has an ulcer and needed to be seen now. They said I couldn't book with one of their other providers because the pt patients needed to stick to one provider before even looking at my history to see I was originally seen by Dr. Cooper. They offered we an appointment and told me WED I can come in. I called to have him be a drop off in the morning because my work wouldn't let me off, on only to find out it was NOV 10 they booked me not the 3. At this point I am pissed because my dogs eye is bad. Luckily, the vet I was schedule to see on the 12 at VCA Hillcrest let me drop my dog off Wednesday morning and told me his ulcer has gotten worse and it is VERY deep and very close to perforating his eye. This vet even called over to consult and see if I can get in ASAP because he may need surgery and they didn't even care. Told him to have me call everyone morning for ER appointments. I was crying on the phone, begging and they didn't even care. I called multiple other places on the third, and three places got back to me (mind you, they haven't even seen my dog before) and told me they would of course get me in first thing Thursday to exam and go from there because HE NEEDED TO SEE A SPECIALIST. I was able to get in through VSH Sorrento valley and they squeezed me in for his appointment And his recheck I just had on Monday AnD his recheck next week. That's what good customer care is and that's what caring about the animals looks like. Don't waste your time or money at this establishment. Take your business to VSH Sorrento Valley or Eye Care for Animals. They actually give a crap about the dogs. Even though eye care was down to only one vet for the week and he only came in on Thursday that week, they still weee willing to squeeze me in. So disappointed, when I needed them to be there in an ER, they weren't. I will NEVER go back to them. read more

Our mini golden doodle has had a series of issues starting with his eyes since April. We have seen Dr. Todd Strube multiple times and have been thrilled with his care and willingness to adjust therapies as the problems have evolved. His front desk personnel are simply impossible. They take their jobs as gate keepers so seriously that they could be easily mistaken for guard dogs and several of them seem most happy with herself when they can say, "no, I won't do that for you". We have repeatedly complained to the Dr. that his desk staff have made getting help from his office, despite his repeated offers to "just call if there's any questions" a true impossibility. He acknowledges that most of the problems we've had are their fault and they need more training. These are not training issues. They are attitude and control freak issues. All the training in the world will not correct the problems at this front desk. This morning as my husband was begging for biopsy and lab results- even just as a prelim 6 days post op he was met with zero cooperation. We just wanted them to send the results to our primary vet for today's appt even though we are both doctors and I have 30 years experience as a pathologist. They were not impressed, or moved or willing to bend their arbitrary rules no matter how senseless they are, inconvenient for us or dangerous to the health of our dog. So, bottom line. Great doc with a Cerberus frontline. No wonder our friend the veterinary pathologist highly recommended Vet specialists in Sorrento valley over VCA. it appears we should have listened to him, and so should you. read more

Last month our maltese ruptured his cornea and had to go through surgery to get the eye removed. Dr. Cooper and the staff at the hospital are amazing! They went above and beyond to make sure we were not only informed but comfortable with every step of the process. They answered all our questions (pre and post op) in a caring way that made me 100% more comfortable with what was going on. With the COVID situation, the process was easy and the techs were all so nice with the pickup/drop off car situation. Beware of this veterinary practice. They are not transparent. We are specifically very displeased with our experience with Dr. Cooper. Decision making was poor and created a complication for our dog. Please ensure ahead of time what the doctor plans to do under anesthesia... that procedures are not done without informed consent especially when they can complicate recovery, and don't yield a change in plan. Dr. Strubbe! What a lovely man. I'm the mum of a darling 8 year old pug named Jackson. We came to Dr. Strubbe to have his eyes removed as they were causing him a lot of problems and it was just time. I was so nervous for the procedure and sad to see my pup go through with it. It was a tuff decision to make for my boy. Dr. Strubbe and his staff were amazing. So patient with the both of us. I asked a ton of questions. I called a ton and not once did they ever make me feel like a pain in the butt. They were so happy to help me. And very supportive. This was my first visit. My dog was referred for an ongoing eye issue by our regular vet. I had concerns after reading the reviews but went anyway We had a great first visit! They told me when I arrived they were short handed today. (I completely understand, we had 2 and now 3 out sick at my office too.) I had a bit of a wait but they were very honest about the situation. The wait time was not excessive- 20 to 30 minutes or so. No big deal, it was worth the wait! Irene took my girl back after explaining what would be included in this visit. They were very thorough as I expected, going to a specialist. Afterwards, I met with Dr. Cooper. She filled me in on all the test results and what she was recommending. She gave me time to discuss her findings and ask questions. She explained the benefit of what she was recommending and why. I appreciated her very much and did not feel rushed out. She let me know that if anything came up she would be happy to answer any additional questions. Irene was great and so was the receptionist- I am sorry I didn't get her name. Everyone was caring, informative professional and friendly. (Another employee even came by to see my dogs- she has 3 of the same breed.) All in all I am very glad I was not dissuaded by the other reviews. I am very happy with our visit today and will be back in a month. I will add more then- I would definitely recommend them. I took my cat to VCA at the recommendation of my veterinarian because she had a severe problem in one eye and my vet didn't know what it was. They were able to see me for an emergency appointment (the only other veterinary opthalomogist in town didn't even return my call), which meant that I'd drop my cat off in the morning, they'd take a look at her when they could throughout the day, and I'd pick her up at the end of the day. I felt comfortable going there because they'd performed cataract surgery on my daughter's dog and she was very happy with them. I wasn't. Dr. Stubbe saw her and called me to describe his findings. He told me what her condition was called and told me there were several things that could be causing it. One of the options he gave me was surgery to remove the eye -- and put in a prosthetic eye (why?), a second was some very expensive tests, and the third was to keep her comfortable. I chose the third and was given some NSAID anti-inflammatory eye drops. He wanted to re-check her in 3-4 weeks so I made an appointment for 4 weeks in the future. A week later her eye looked much worse so I called and told them she was getting worse and was told they had no openings until the appointment I already had, which was still 3 weeks away. Feeling a little bit frantic I called my vet's office. They didn't have any openings but said they would double book me that morning since the situation sounded serious. The vet took one look at her and said the eye had to come out and that they could do the surgery there. He also told me that her condition was EXTREMELY painful and immediately gave her a shot of morphine and gave me more morphine to give her orally at home for the next few days until the scheduled surgery. I was very upset with VCA for telling me that this cat who, was getting worse, couldn't be seen for 3 weeks and also very upset with Dr. Stubbe for not telling me how painful her condition was and for not actually giving me anything that would make her more comfortable. I DO NOT recommend this office. read more

I am really disappointed in the Eye Clinic. I have been going there for over 15 years and always had a good experience. In the early 2000's, I saw Dr. Barbara Steele, then later, Dr Jamie Schloring--loved them both. I own a rescue, so I had multiple dogs as patients (seven at one time). The prices were fair and i was given a discount, since I own a non-profit. Recently, things have changed dramatically and my experiences have not been good. One of my dogs needed eye surgery (Keratomtomy--ulcer removal). I was quoted $1,300-1,500 for the surgery. I had had an initial eye exam and a recheck. The vet wanted to see the dog a third time before doing the surgery then wanted me to drive back (I live in Orange County) another day for the surgery. I decided to see another ophthalmologist in Tustin (Eye Care for Animals). The ophthalmologist saw him right away and did the surgery after the exam on the same day. The total for the visit and surgery was $467.00. Had the Eye Clinic done the surgery, it would have cost me over $2,000.00 with the surgery and multiple visits. The surgery and exam took less than an hour. As much as I have loved the Eye Clinic over the years, I am sad to say that they have lost my business. read more

No one is happy when your vet refers you to a specialist. That means that: 1. Your pet has health problems 2. I was referred by my primary veterinarian last November when my young cocker began to develop eye problems. They were direct with his diagnosis, and did all necessary tests. My dog has gone for regular checkups since that time. Just a couple of days ago, my dog woke up, basically blind. He was scheduled for cataract surgery the next day. Following the surgery, I picked up my groggy, but SEEING dog. Seriously, he couldn't see, then surgery, then he was ok. How could I give any other than a five star rating?! The staff is also very caring. They were very kind, as I tend to become emotional when my dog has to go through surgery. They also speak highly of my dog and lavish him with belly rubs. When he came out of the surgery, they had placed all kinds of cute stickers on his Elizabethan collar and had dressed him in a bright-colored harness! This is very expensive, but I did get what I paid for. All post-op care is included in the price of surgical procedures. Worst front desk staff (someone named Brooklyn is particularly inept). We have been seeing Dr. Strubbe for a few years for our dogs glaucoma. They have had recent staff and policy changes and the new staff is rude and incompetent and the policy changes are absurd and inhumane. They make you wait 3mons for appointments, during that time they will not refill prescriptions until your pet is seen. Well it's one thing to have the pet be seen before a script, that is understandable but that is only reasonable if you can accomodate an appointment made within a reasonable time frame, otherwise they expect your pets should suffer in pain until seen. This is inhumane. I would never recommend this place, they basically are rude and do not care about the pets. Horrible incompetent staff. read more

Wow, wow, wow! This place was awesome. I was referred here over the weekend from my regular vet as my puggie had an ulcer on his buggy eye. Monday morning appt, by 5pm he had surgery and was ready to go home. The staff was amazing, from them helping me find the place on the phone to the tech who checked me out and sat down and went over all the meds and instructions. Its just a well run establishment with truly nice nice people and caring doctors. amazing. HIGHLY recommend if your furry baby needs their eye fixed! Dr. Schorling is outstanding. She took beautiful care of my Shar Pei Maggie and her displaced lens. She answered all my questions thoroughly and professionally. The total cost even ended up being less than she had originally quoted. The staff is friendly and very warm. We also saw Dr. Vestre for one follow-up appointment. While certainly taking much less time with us than Dr. Schorling and not having quite the same bedside manner, he seemed friendly and competent, and I didn't feel shorted. My only complaint would be the ease of scheduling follow-up appointments. They recommend multiple and certainly it's incredible as they're included in the price of the surgery--however, they book 2-3 weeks out, and you need to be looking at 3-4 weeks out if you want a time that will be convenient for you! I wish they would schedule the first few follow-up appointments WHEN they do the surgery rather than piecemeal. It's very hard to keep taking time off work! read more

Safe, friendly, honest. We took our "fur kid" to be assessed after she had scratched one eye and lost vision rapidly in the other. I am lucky enough to have family/friends in both veterinary field and ophthalmology field so I could have guidance along the way. Everything Dr. Cooper brought up was on target! I loved that she presented options in different price ranges (covid has been tough financially) without sacrificing care. She listened to my ideas and concerns without judgement and always gave me all the time I needed. I really valued that. The staff are also incredibly friendly and kind to our dog. I know our dog can be intimidating at first and they were so calm no matter how much she barked. Overall I feel they care about our dog and her recovery. read more

I have been a client of Eye Clinic For Animals since years before they were purchased by VCA. My husband and I rescue Japanese Chin, and since Chinnies have famously flat faces, they also have famously problematic eyes. Dr. Strubbe, who is new-ish to the clinic, is so wonderful that my husband or I drive our dogs from Carlsbad all the way to Kearny Mesa rather than use one of several more geographically desirable veterinary ophthalmologists. He is thorough. He is knowledgeable. He is kind and warm (neither is a prerequisite for being an excellent doctor, but they don't hurt). He thinks outside the box, but he is also pragmatic. He doesn't oversell me on unnecessary procedures or medications. I'm a fan! Linda and Debbie, both of whom I've known for 6 or 7 years, are basically family at this point. Steve, the new office manager, has been helpful and kind, too. I don't leave a ton of reviews on Yelp, and I try only to review places I really love. I prefer Yelp as an expression of my gratitude rather than my displeasure. Our dog, Zsizsi had ulcers in her eyes and they got her in right away, quickly determining that she needed surgery. I was so apprehensive, but Dr. Stubbag called me before and after the surgery, explaining EVERYTHING I needed to know, including how to take meticulous care of her after the surgery to optimize her chances of healing. The communication was outstanding. She was in so much pain going in, unable to even open her eyes, that I thought I would have to carry her out after the surgery, but she trotted out on her own and her eyes were OPEN. The front desk staff was wonderful and the Vet Tech explained the medicines meticulously. What a wonderful place. I'm so grateful. read more

They're really good vets, just to start. But I really want to comment on how good they are with dogs. We have a dog with prior abuse issues and anxiety. She hates new situations, new dogs, and new people. Fun at the vet, right? The staff here have been AMAZING with her. Super calm and gentle with her, keep her safe, and take care of her stress, even during COVID when we couldn't go in with her. Seriously recommend. read more
