We took my dog outside to their grassy area and he gave the dog his shots in seconds. He's a Belgian Malinois and is reactive. The small, inside room made him extra nervous. I recently took my dog to VCA Animal Hospital in Eagle River for an ear infection. I was charged an exam fee, a fee to diagnose his ear condition, and the cost of antibiotics. The total was $296. The appointment took less than 20 minutes. During that time my dog did not get an examination. The only thing the vet did was take a swab of his ear. No other physicals related to my dog were taken. So I was charged the $130 exam fee for simply walking in the door. After the scam visit, my dog continued to suffer from an ear infection. VCA then wanted another $100 to look at my dog again. So they want more money to continue to not actually diagnose my dog. As a lifetime dog owner I have never gone to a vet more interested in making money and less interested in the health of my dog. I can't possibly recommend avoiding this vet more! read more

We have been to several vets since having our dog Daisy, and this one by far has been the best one ever. I was able to call them with any concerns and email them pictures and they happily helped me over the phone and let me know the best course of action. When I had an emergency they made time to let me bring her in the same day and provided me with comfort. I'm not one to write reviews on businesses but this time around I feel like it's a necessity. I have never owned a pitbull before and I am very well aware of the general stereotypical comments about pitbulls and their character. Our family had decided to take a chance with a newly adopted pitbull who is a sweetheart. She has been with us for a few months now but is has no structure and is very high in energy. We went to the VCA clinic in Eagle River today as we have noticed our pup has lost some unexplained weight. Going to the vet is a scary experience for our pup for unknown reasons and so the visit itself was stressful with her pulling in all directions and not letting anyone touch her. We attempted to put a muzzle on her which also was not successful and so I was told to take her to the car until we can give her something to calm down before we examine her. NO PROBLEM!!! I came back the doctor was so rude. I was trying to share my thoughts and experiences with having this new pup in our family and trying to get some answers about what to expect from this doctor who is supposed to be the expert. She cut me off while I was sharing about our pups behavior with our other pups and how she is in general and I was told to stop talking so that we can focus on the weight loss problem. She couldn't be more expressive about how unbothered she was about our family and our pups well being. Dr Bahan, you have zero compassion, kindness or even the slightest amount of politeness when trying to deal with a family that just adopted a pup from the pound. If it's not from you, (a vet) where are we supposed to get advice and encouragement about our new family member? You have proven yourself to be a vet for all the wrong reasons. I do have to mention that the support staff including the front desk and the tech were very compassionate. Thank you for cleaning up after our pup and not judging us. We are new to this pitbull world and are really trying to give this girl a chance at life. My bad experience is with this particular doctor only. Like I said the rest of the staff were great. The Eagle River VCA is one of the best. We have been bringing our dogs to them for several years now. They are always friendly and professional. The facility is spotless. You can quickly see that they truly love the animals and care about there're well being. Recently we had to put one of our dogs "down". We wish we could recognize all the staff individually by name. From our phone call to the reception folks, medical technicians and veterinarian, they were so understanding, caring and compassionate. I have been pleased with the care I have received over the past year and a half but required nothing more than just routine checkups. I recently visited for one of these routine appointments and upon checking out, I was informed that I had an excess balance in my VCA Care Club account that would expire soon and the asked if I would like any lab work completed since I haven't had any since moving here in 2022. I told them sure I would like to run the lab work since the excess funds do not roll over. They took my dog in the back to draw her blood and after a few minutes, brought her back out and said she was all done and she did fine. They proceeded to hand me supplies to get a urine sample when I can and bring it back to them. A few days later, I received a phone call saying all of her labs were unremarkable and that her fecal sample was also normal. I questioned the fecal sample because I did not take a fecal sample in with me. I was first told that she went to the bathroom in the back, I questioned this because this is not my dog's normal behavior. I was told they have a run in the back and she went in the run. I didn't drop her off so there was no reason to put her in a run when I was waiting in the office. A week later I was able to take them the urine sample they requested, and I also took them a fecal sample from my dog that morning. I explained that my dog was having diarrhea recently and was suspect about the results of a fecal sample that I did not bring in, and was never even informed that one had been taken. The front desk associate was very polite and went to speak with the office manager. The front desk clerk came back a few minutes later and said she spoke with the office manager and the office manager said the urine sample would be covered under my VCA care plan, but if I wanted the fecal test rerun, it would cost me an additional $125.00, and the original fecal sample had been manually extracted. So now I'm getting two different stories of how the fecal sample was obtained and the office manager whom I'm sure wasn't present for the supposedly manual extraction didn't even have the courtesy to come out and speak with me herself. I'm currently awaiting a return phone call, but I am very disappointed that I was never informed they obtained a fecal sample as well as their response to my inquiry. read more

Finding the right veterenary clinic that i can trust was very important. I've researched veterenary clinics around anchorage. I didn't find one that sat right with me. I came accross VCA Eagle River they had very positive reviews so i decided to take a chance and after taking my 8 week old samoyed I now know why. Scheduling an a appointment was very pleasant the receptionist was very friendly and helpful. With the pandemic still going on I was worried about the curb side policy because I didn't want to be apart from my puppy, but everyone there made me feel at ease. They really took care of my little baby like their own. They even gave her a complimentary nail trim as a first visit plus bags of goodies that included a puppy 101 book that will really come in handy. Switched from another vet to VCA and we have no regrets!! I was struggling to get my poodle seen when he had multiple urgent needs following surgery. I was at my wits end with Ravenwood, they can NEVER get you in and kept referring me to ER vets in Anchorage! VCA was able to get us in and get my guy treated and back to normal. I am going to update my review at this time, because the new owner/manager was willing to get on the phone and talk to me about my experience. She apologized profusely for the treatment I received, and assured me that it was a recurring problem that had now been taken care of. She told me that she had replaced much of the office staff because of similar complaints, and offered my dog the VIP treatment for free during his next stay. We took her up on it, and just got him back. He's been bathed, his nails clipped, ears and teeth cleaned, and apparently spent much of his time outside, playing. This time, they gave him a $50 heartworm treatment because he came back positive, albeit very low on the scale. My husband and I don't care to argue that, because that's in the dog's best interests. He's home now. He's a happy dog, very well taken care of, but then again, the girls that work with the animals were ALWAYS very good. read more

Of all the vets in town, I prefer this one. The staff is very friendly and I find that making an appointment was not too difficult. They were very gentle with my dog and asked many questions in order to meet his needs appropriately. The downside is that when it gets super busy I find that communication falls through the cracks...it's also a bit pricey here but if you're lucky you can find $20 off coupons in the mail. The medical staff at the Eagle River VCA have done an excellent job for years in taking care of our 2 little girls. In past, front counter staff have been a little lacking in patient communication/service skills. However, the current folks are very good--attentive, kind, efficient. So, training has improved. The front counter of any business is the customer's first impression. They must be the best trained & always sensitive & completely considerate of folks with sick babies. Sunday night my dog became ill. He was lethargic, couldn't walk and for a two year old lab that is weird. I was freaked. Neither of us slept a wink that night. ER VCA is open 7AM to 7PM, so I was there when their doors opened Monday morning. Dr Martell explained she didn't understand what was going on with my pup, but wanted to approach diagnosis in a measured, deliberate manner and not run every test imaginable and run up my bill. They started Sam on an IV and ran blood work which thankfully came back clean. No need for additional and expensive diagnostics and he was better by that afternoon. Turns out all he had was worms, but a couple days of diarrhea just wiped him out - he was weak as a kitten. The doc was fabulous, the staff empathetic and kind. They kept me informed via phone all day long and followed up throughout the week. Thanks, Doctor Martell & ER VCA for fixing up my best friend and for being intelligent about the way you chose to approach his problem. My $500 vet bill could easily have been $1500, but you guys showed some common sense and judgment. read more

We had previously used Ravenwood but never again after trying to get 2 separate emergency appt during business hours. VCA was awesome, both times (once for dog and once for cat), they immediately said to bring them in. Most recent, our 18 yr old cat had a stroke and several seizures, staff was awesome and super caring. Carefully explained everything and prescribed some drugs to try and stop the seizures. Two weeks later, he had another stroke and we made the horrible decision to put him down. Staff was above and beyond awesome, caring and concerned for us. They made the painful event more bearable. My 16+ yr old cat was not herself Sunday night & I was happy to be able to get an appointment for 12 noon Monday. I thought I would loose her but they got to work & altho it cost some cash I got my kitty back Monday afternoon & she is her old self. Staff & Dr Julie Hanlon were great. Left her there for fluids & testing. Got an update call from Dr & lots of info from the Vet & staff. Molly cat & I really appreciate having her home & her old self as long as I can have her with me. I was carrying a carrier and my baby in a car seat and the receptionist noticed me walking up with hands full and came to the door to hold it open for me. Wait wasn't very long for my appointment. Poor 1st Impression: Sat morning appt, walked in, sat down, 1 other person with pet in the lobby, young woman at reception fails to receive: glances over, says nothing... for 10 minutes completely ignored me, has a brief conversation with other client , types some stuff, doesn't appear busy enough to simply say, "be with you in a minute"... for 10 mintutes... Another young woman comes to the counter and quickly asks if I've been helped... (what's up with the employee that's been there ignoring incoming patients for 10 minutes?) Dr Hanlon, when I got to see her 25 minutes after appt time, was kind, professional, and seemed competent. She recommended xray for a bloated belly that my 15 yo husky has developed. Ok, her conclusion was to have a radiologist review on Mon. (2 days out from appt date), and they'd call me to update and provide complete analysis. No call as promised, by 4 days out, I call and leave a message with Dr Hanlon asking for info as promised. 6 days out, call again and tell VCA ER they are fired. Turns out they forgot to send xrays to the radiologist! They did after I had to call twice, but this is ridiculous... Training of younger staff is apparently poor, and fact that they forgot to send in the xrays for analysis is further indication that seemingly good vets have incompetent staff support and poor management procedures. We're only as good as our team, and this team has proven to be short on abilities and attitude for this customer out $350 for a negative experience. Won't be going back, and can not recommend. read more

I will NEVER EVER refer anyone here! Very untrustworthy and disreputable business practices... A client of theirs rehomed their puppy to me and I made arrangements to transfer records and update vaccinations. When I set the appointment I was not given the full cost amount when I specifically asked before coming in what the charges would be. So you can imagine my surprise when I was handed a bill for over 50% more than the price I was originally given. After the service had already been rendered. I disputed the issue and was flat out refused reimbursement by their manager due to "standard fees" that were applied without my knowledge or consent. HA! If this is their standard procedure don't you think that disclosure of that "little detail" should be standard procedure as well? Especially to anyone choosing to use their services? I was brand new to this facility and I was told by their medical director that I should have assumed this fee would be added. Mmmm, even after I called ahead of time and confirmed? Then to add insult to injury she said she felt sorry for the vet who assisted me because I was upset and angry at the situation they created. I came to VCA with an expectation that they set for me and they are refusing to acknowledge their severe miscommunication and honor the service price that was provided to me by their staff. I expect nothing less from a professional service provider than to make discrepancies such as these right, because it is the right thing to do. Instead they are choosing their bottom line and profit over their reputation and valuable first impressions. DO NOT EXPECT GREAT SERVICE FROM VCA. read more

I moved to Alaska over a year ago and used VCA for vaccinations and minor health care needs without incident. Over the last six months the clinic as a whole has changed. It started with my second dog needing to be spayed. I dropped her off at 7am as requested; but by 3pm I had heard nothing in regards to the surgery. I picked her up at 7pm, and the staff apologized for the lack of communication. I had boarded my dogs here before and had no problem, with Kelly being our favorite tech. While I was out of the country the dogs needed to be boarded for part of the time. I called every couple of days to check on them while they were there. I was always told that they were fine and a pleasure. When my dog/house sitter went to pick up the dogs, she was informed that the dogs were being sent home on antibiotics and steroids due to suspected kennel cough (my dog's vaccinations are current). This new horror occurred when my dog required to have some fatty tumors removed to test for cancer. Again no follow-up call that the dog had made it through surgery, and in recovery. We brought the dog home with the warning that fluid may build up under the skin where the lumps had been removed (Wednesday). My husband and I cleaned the incisions twice a day to keep the area free of infection. By Sunday, my dog developed what looked like to have a third degree burn on his chest with fluid underneath. When we changed his dressing Sunday evening, the fluid showed that it was infected. We immediately took him back to the vet as soon as it opened at 7am. The vet who performed the surgery stated she may have damaged the blood supply to the skin and it may be dead and need to be removed. The office again never called to up date my husband or myself, and it is now 5pm and the dog has not had his operation. The staff told us that we could come pick him up at 7pm and he would be ready to go home?! Needless to say, save your four legged family member and DO NOT TAKE THEM HERE!!!! read more

This place is the WORST. I am so frustrated by them. Batteries of expensive tests recommended of which I complied, diet changes to specialized very expensive food I had to buy from them, of which I complied, medicines and pills, of which I complied and the dog is still sick. The doctor said to bring the dog back for a recheck just to make sure what was prescribed was working of which they implied that it was very low if not any expensive because it was a quick, how's he doing... I told them to not give him anything, do anything, absolutely nothing that would cost extra money because we have already spent almost $1000 at this vet trying to get my dog healthy. At the end of this quick recheck appt. I was told the cost was over $160 because they had done a test which I didn't want and charged their "discounted" appt. amount. This place is all about the money and very shady with charges. I told them I felt like I was being exploited and I didn't have the money to be spending... They said we already did the test that I didn't want and said I had to pay everything. read more

I have never had a problem with the office staff - I was a long time (20+ years) customer of Ravenwood, but over the past couple of years that clinic has not been able to schedule appointments when I needed them. I tried VCA and have not gone back to Ravenwood except to get my pets records. One problem I noted with VCA is the staff and Docs seem to hone in on all the symtoms I presented and did not do much exploring on their own. I am not the expert - just the owner - but all in all the treatments have been good. read more

We recently had to put our 13 year old Golden Retriever, Scoobie to sleep. I will tell you after dealing with a precious pet passing away 5 years ago and then going thru this at VCA, this clinic is by far the best. Scoobie was a patient there and they tried to keep our old man out of pain the last 3 years until finally it was his time to go. From the very beginning when I called in to make a appt for a Vet to check him out and telling them we may make the decision to put him to rest, till the time I went to go pick up his clay paw print, they showed nothing but compassion and understanding on what we were going thru. We had a very nice room, no exam table, the lights were dim and a blanket in the floor where he could lay. It was a very peaceful environment for us and him. They even put us in touch with the crematory where he was going. We will continue to bring our other fur baby to them and sing praises about this place. This place is fantasitic. I just moved to Eagle River and called around for a new Vet. I called Raven Wood and they were a bunch of ass holes on the phone. and so i called the VCA. The girls on the phone were so helpful. They answered all my questions and even the manager was there to meet me when I checked in. The vets are all hot too. Over all I got great service. I boarded my two chihuahuas here to take my kids to Disneyland last week. The frony desk receptionist quoted me $36/night for each dog over the phone two months before my stay when I booked. Upon picking up my animals I was told the charge would be $39 and $42 per night per dog. I talked with the receptionist and told her what I had originally been quoted and she said she had quoted me that before a price change and that she had thought the price was the same for two animals if they were boarding together. She was apologetic and helpful and gave me a partial refund. I requested that I get the full refund for what I had originally been quoted and asked that the manager call me. The receptionist said the manager would call me the next day and would give me the remaining refund for what I was originally quoted for. I had to take it upon myself to call the next day and get ahold of the office manager TERESA NELSON. She was unwilling to give the refund for what I had originally been quoted. She disconnected the call when I requested a receipt with the breakdown of the individual charged be emailed to me. I called back and she ignored the call. I had to go into the clinic to get her to face me in order for her to address the situation and get my receipt for the individual charges. She refused to give me the full refund and instead agreed to give me a $6 dollar refund. She didn't take my card or any information for the refund so now I have to wait and see if I even get that. She was completely unhelpful and uncaring and refused to acknowledge the miscommunication by the receptionist even though the receptionist herself admitted to quoting me incorrectly. This is the most unprofessional practice of business I have ever experienced. My dogs board for vacation every 6 months and I will GLADLY be taking my business elsewhere to somewhere that practices ethically sound business, where I will be charged what I am quoted. The only good thing about this place is the location, as its in Eagle River where I live but it's not even worth it. I'll drive the extra 15 minutes to one of the many places in Anchorage in order to receive actual decent customer service. Also, two months ago one of my dogs was stepped on by my son and had a limp and a possible fracture and I was told by Eagle River VCA that the first available appointment was two weeks out even in this emergency situation. I had to go to the emergency vet to get him seen. Save your time guys with Eagle River VCA. NOT worth it or worthy of your business. read more

I will now go elsewhere due to their lack of treatment and compassion for my pets ( cat and dog). God help you for going to this clinic. Get a second opinion if you do go here. Do NOT trust their diagnosis. They were extremely rude when I called to say please be careful with your exams - my dog's 2.5 tumor was missed on a 20 lb dog. That's all I wanted was to advise of the missed diagnosis. I was met with hostility and anger as I was crying about my dog's condition. My dog had surgery there Monday! Dr McPeck and the tech we had for the surgery was amazing! I went in there today to get her drains removed and the vet tech who took out the drains brought her out to me with her wounds draining blood on the floor. She didn't even bandage her and said that's just the way it is that they need to drain! On what planet do you let a dogs blood drip on the floor. I tried to bandage her myself before getting her into my car with the ace bandage I had and a paper towel from their bathroom. Another person checking in their pet helped me hold her. The two people at the front desk just sat there! Worst after care ever! I will be changing doctors and going to the valley to continue her care with the Dr McPecks in Palmer!!!!! read more

This hospital is TERRIBLE. The vets are all too consumed with trying to sell you a package deal like a car sales man and the front staff dont know the first thing about customer service. Save your money, get treated like an actual person and go to somewhere like Ravenwood or College Village. I have taken my pets there several times only to find upon checking out that my "annual bloodwork", new crappy food and I dont even remember what I went for in the first place.. cost me more than I would be charged at the hospital without insurance. read more

I've used this vet since 1993 and my experiences have always been positive. The staff is friendly and really care about my dog. I board my dog there at least twice a year and I've never had any problems. (I have a dachshund who can be a bit of a handful when she's out of her element). The staff is always gentle with her and she always comes home in great shape! Appointments are easy to get and I prefer using this vet over all others in town. read more

I have been going here since it switched from Eagle River Veterinary years ago. I highly recommend this practice. I usually have 3-4 dogs and 3-4 cats. Needless to say that I have had my fair share of vet bills and pets with various issues from diabetes to asthma. I have worked with Dr. Hanlon for a long time and I wouldn't go anywhere else. All of the vets are great, compassionate and truly want what's best for your pet. Even though it may have a corporate name, the vets are the same as everywhere else and it's not all about the money.
