Dr Rushing is who we were seen by & she did an excellent job My fur baby didn't show signs of anxiety with her or the staff which speaks volumes bc at my other vet she would just be shaking in fear I think we've found our new Vet home It's not expensive & it's not cheap but you get what you pay for out here in Houston Dr Rushing & the staff are 5 stars in my book! The main reason we first came to VCA was because through the Humane Society, the first well check was free at VCA. This should have been my first sign that they wanted to hook you. Nonetheless, our cat needed to be seen and this hospital location was able to get her in immediately. This was the end of the positive experience. (One extra star given for getting us in immediately.) I was given an estimate for the exam and X-rays at a staggering $500+. (Slow blinking). Due to my emotional condition at the time, I agreed to her being seen despite the fee. Unfortunately I could not stay with her and left the office, of course after paying the $200 deposit. The call I got from the Vet about 2 hours later gave me 2 options. 1. Wait and see or 2. Emergency surgery. After discussing things with my husband, we decided to take the "wait and see" option. When I returned to retrieve our pet, I felt the treatment we received because we opted for the non expensive/non invasive/approach was terrible. Things like, "Your pet is going to have an agonizing painful death" and "The doctor does not think she will be ok without surgery" was said to me for going against the doctor's recommendation. I felt like I was being shamed as an awful pet mom for not opting for a $5000 emergency procedure. (Oh- I was offered a payment plan if I went along with the surgery.) Needless to say, our pet is doing quite well despite not having surgery. I feel for pet parents who get bullied into expensive procedures. I get it, we love our pets and places like this prey on our emotions. I'm changing vets. I don't want to feel bullied again. read more

Do not take your pets here unless you're wanting them to die. The delay in care and negligence is totally unacceptable. We brought my dog here because the reviews were great and we want the best for our dog. Our dog had been vomiting for 24hrs, not able to keep anything down, lethargic, unable to defecate. They did an XR, fluids, and nausea med but then sent him home when clearly he should've been hospitalized. They said for him to come back the next day for repeat XR. However, in the night, he declined further. We took him to another VCA where they said my dog should've been hospitalized. The one thing that is simple and should've been done was lab work where they would've found out he had pancreatitis and probably would've still been alive if treated at this location. I would NEVER send any of my animals here ever again. read more

The only reason we started going to this Vet is because we rescued 2 of our pets from the Houston SPCA. Regardless, 3 days ago my husband rescued a kitten from the middle of the road in our neighborhood and we took it to the VCA hospital the next day. They said she was dehydrated and malnourished but healthy. They said she had no fleas and her gums looked great and the weird noise I heard was just her purring. They gave her some fluids and sent her home with me. The next afternoon I came home from work and the kitten was collapsed in the room and barely responding to my touch or noises(we kept her separated from my other pets). I called the VCA and they had no time to see me and told me to go to a nearby Animal Hospital. I arrived at the animal hospital and they immediately took her and said the little kitten was COVERED in fleas, and was basically dying FAST. They said she had pneumonia and fluid in her lungs. This is literally 24 hours after being told she was healthy at the VCA. They recommended humane euthanasia because they did not think she would survive the transport to an animal hospital for a blood transfusion. We called a week in advance to see if we can get a scope down in my dog's ear so we set up an appointment, as she has been having dried blood and ear infections for years without ANY HELP from my original Banfield doc. Mind you our dog is VERY SCARED of veterinarians. They kept her in a cage for 4 solid hours then called us multiple times (all in all we had to tell them ATLEAST SEVEN TIMES that there must be a foreign body in her ear), and as soon as we hostily responded after the SEVENTH TIME ASKING, they refused treatment. MY DOG NEEDS HELP AND VETERINARIANS ONLY CARE ABOUT GETTING PAID (And really don't give a care about us or our pets) . I was going to use them as my regular vet, but after several visits and boarding my dog twice with them, I realize I don't like how unwelcoming the staff is. I saw a very young (female) vet two of the times I was there and she made comments I didn't like regarding when I choose to spay my dog. One time I went for a shot and they literally did it in the waiting area. My dog doesn't care about shots and was ok, but I felt that was not the way I wanted my dog treated. If I'm paying for the service, then take her into a room and give her a shot like every other Vet's office. I decided to stop boarding my dog there because if I called to check on my dog they would sound like I interrupted something important. Furthermore, there were days that at almost 9 am they would tell me my dog had not been let out just yet. I actually like the facility, they keep it nice and clean. Their dog boarding is very inexpensive and other than the issues when calling my dog seemed ok when I picked her up. Sadly, due to the lack of good service I will probably not be returning. If you decide to visit them, you may have a different experience as a lot of the reviews claim, but in my case it was less than great. read more

So, I've been coming here for about 2+ years now. I visited this location when "Ace" was a pup and still continuing to come here and grow with this place. I transferred my other dog Daisy here from Banfield in Pearland (because the manager got my number from the system and started to text me personally, which was strange..) I'd like to start off with the appearance of the place, good location but busy spot right off of the corner of 518 and across the street from Walgreens. The atmosphere is friendly and the employees are sweet. I always enjoyed calling and talking to Jesse (she no longer works there...*sad face*) actually there's a lot of old employees who started there when I began my pup journey with Ace and now no longer work there which is sad but the new group is still learning and are friendly. The Vets are super friendly but I will always stick with Dr. Cupples, she is by far the NICEST and realest veterinarian I've ever met. She is super sweet, always lets me know the pros and cons about Ace and Daisy, lets me know what will save me money or lose me money, I absolutely love her and her personality. My dogs are NEVER scared when she approaches them and she's so kind and pure hearted. Daisy and Ace love her! So I've been here multiple times but I just decided to write a review because I realized I haven't written one and I chose the photos attached of Ace when he had a bad allergic reaction/infection, and some normal ones of Daisy. Ace had to wear a cone because he kept trying to scratch his head so we decided to put a cone on it. In a few weeks with the right meds and treatment plan our little guy was A-OK. I don't know what has changed in the last few years, but the quality of customer service has really dropped. We just got a new puppy and they were not able to get us in for an appointment about 4 days out. This morning after taking our cat there for a 10:30 am appointment they had an emergency patient and the tech kept us updated on the status of when the only DVM was able to see us. After waiting in the room for over an hour, we had to leave to make a 1:50 pm appointment for our puppy elsewhere. The good news is that the other vet was able to squeeze in a visit for our cat. I don't know what happened to all the vets @ both locations, but they need more to give care to such a facility. read more

Trust the one star reviews. I adopted a 7 week old Great Dane and had to have him checked out within 48 hours of picking him up from the breeder. I made a wellness appointment with VCA. The day of my appointment I walked out of the house and left his shot records and the $25 first time customer coupon sitting on the counter. I called on the way and asked the receptionist if I needed to go back home and grab them. After informing me my appointment was in 2 minutes, she said the shot records were not needed and that she could only validate my $25 coupon if I could bring up the link. Turns out I did not need the shot records because the first thing I was told by the receptionist when I walked through the door was that they "looked up his age" and because he was 7 weeks they were going to do all his shots again that visit and it was "fine because he's a puppy". No one had met him. No one had spoken to me about anything. The lady that answers the phone told me what they were going to do, as we walked through the front door, before we even got to the counter to check in. I told her that I was there for a wellness exam and to potentially establish a relationship with a vet for myself and my new puppy. She said she would let the vet know and put me in a room. The vet enters the room and first thing she says is "so I hear you have some concerns about the vaccinations". I asked her to explain her approach, which she did. I told her my intention that day was a wellness exam, to establish a good experience for my puppy and discuss next steps in maintaining his health. Here's my point: I see the validity in vets administering their own vaccinations so they can guarantee effectiveness. My problem is all this conversation happened before anyone even met the puppy, examined him, or had a conversation with the owner. This isn't auto zone where you type in year and model and it delivers an electronic parts list. My expectation from a vet, especially first time visit with a brand new puppy is to exam the puppy, talk about next milestones, things to look for, things to consider, address questions/concerns from the owner. Nope. Here I just walked in the door and got vaccinations crammed down my throat without even a "hello". It's worth noting that my puppy was shaking and vocally scared. Granted, I had only had him two days by that time, but in two days he had flown on a plane, left his litter mates, went to a completely new environment, met several different people and had been in the car for at least 5 trips. He had not shook or vocalized his fear before that vet visit. My mother had a similar experience when she brought her dog there. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, but I won't ever go back. They truly do not care. It's just a day job to them. I ended up paying $25 for 3 minutes in an exam room. I don't care about the money. I do care about the experience. read more

After numerous bad that experiences over the years, I took a recommendation to bring my great Dane puppy to Dr. Campbell for her ear cropping. We unfortunately had just lost another Dane puppy at a very young age due to an inattentive vet, and we were very paranoid this time around. Dr. Campbell made it very clear that the overall health of our dogs is more important than anything else and it shows. Her staff knows our dogs by name and I can tell our babies enjoy their time with them. They genuinely care about the pets and even recognize my voice over the phone before I tell them who's calling. Last January, my 9 year old chihuahua was attacked by my neighbor's dog. She underwent emergency surgery that night at a 24 hour facility. Three days later, Izzy was transferred to Westside and has been under their care ever since. So, it's safe to say, I have been to Westside 20+ times in the past 3 months. I've seen the doctors and staff at Westside many, many, MANY times since Izzy was first admitted, which has really given me the opportunity to get to know them on a personal basis. This is what i have learned: The doctors and staff at Westside have been extremely loving, patient and dedicated with little Izzy. Pets are always welcomed with a smile, and Izzy is often greeted by someone that recognizes her. Izzy feels very comfortable around their staff, which makes me feel at ease when dropping her off. I just had the day that every pet owner dreads. The cat was ready to go and I have to deal with it. The staff was so wonderful and understanding in such a tough time. They made time for us to come immediately. When we got there they came out to the car to talk about options and during COVID made it possible to be in the room with her as she passed. I had taken my 13yr old westie here for more than 7yrs. In August- 3 weeks ago, my sweet baby suddenly became sick and pasted away!!! This vet was SIMPLY AMAZING!!!!! When I took him in- Dr. Shane Vanderford contacted me many times throughout the day, keeping me informed. After picking my baby up- Dr. Vanderford gave me his personal cell, and said to call him if my baby got worse over night- to call him! I did call him at 11pm, he answered right away. Took my baby to the ER- Dr Vanderford even called the hospital and spoke with them regarding my baby!! The next day- I did have to put my baby to sleep, back at VCA- they made a room available for my family to come and be with our baby for as long as we wanted too. They were simply AMAZING!!!!!! I used them for years, but after being bought out by VCA, it's become obvious that $$$ is what they are about. My female had things going on with her eyes, discharge & such. The vet prescribed meds that were expensive, but if it cured things I was ok with that. After weeks, things were no better. I took her back for new meds and, of course, another charge. She still wasn't any better until the lady who trims her nails said, "I see she's dealing with allergies." A few days later with the help of some Benadryl, problem solved. We had used this clinic since before they were VCA. I was pleased until recent years. Now I have to say that one vet proved on one day to be actually a rather bad clinician. There was an unfathomable lapse. Lab values were not read or were not acted on or communicated to me that showed, unmistakably, a severe life-threating condition. Several days later another vet in the facility, Dr. Brown, did run new labs and she spotted the condition immediately, but our fellow died a day later. My opinion as a medical scientist is that we can't really know if timely treatment might have saved our friend, but without information we could not act. read more

Dr. Vanderford is excellent. I don't plan on taking my pets anywhere else. I had several questions about my new puppy, and he took the time to explain everything. There was no rush at all. I've been to other vets that get in and out in less than five minutes. Not Dr. Vanderford. I really appreciate the time he took with me and my puppy. Also, my puppy is still young so I am still working on socialization. Dr. Vanderford was very gentle with her and spoke softly to her. Overall, it was a very positive experience for her. Originally when we came in, they were so polite... now that they are not allowing people to come inside with their pets they are taking FULL advantage of sticking it to you financially... my dog has been in pain for over a week now... they asked me to drop him off and they never saw him... the next day they FINALLY saw him and charged me $100 for antibiotic shot to hold him until he had availability on his books. I called a few days later and the doctor refused to proceed with the procedure until blood work( the doctor just told me he was NOT comfortable poking a 15 year old dog unnecessarily which is why all of his shots range from 1 to 3 years now including the shot for boarding.. which they could offer ALL dogs but they rather have you come in so they can empty out your pockets) completed so I dropped him back off (all during my working hours) only to pick him up and be charged $600... at this point it's CLEAR that Westside is taking FULL advantage of my dog's elderly age, my love for him (this dog has been EVERYWHERE with me) and the fact that I don't have access to confirm what you are and are not doing for my dog while he's in your possession! read more

**Note there is a major update, so keep reading. :) My experience with Westside Veterinary Clinic and Hospital has been mixed thus far. I brought my 12 year old cat in for a dental consult/procedure as his primary vet does not have the radiography technology needed to do it. I got a fast appt on a Saturday with Dr. Cupples who was very nice. She examined him and got him set up for cleaning and extraction surgery on Tuesday. The day of the procedure was ok. I received update calls, which was nice. However, when I went to pick Woody up, he'd urinated in his personal carrier. That really makes me wonder how good their post-op/recovery monitoring is. Are pets just placed in their carriers to wait it out until their parents come hours later??? On the plus side, the tech cleaned him up with some dry shampoo and he was too high to mind much. I got a quick run down of instructions and was on my way. The first night went ok. He drank broth and was a bit loopy from the drugs, so he napped a lot. Someone called the following morning to check on him, which I really appreciated. I inquired about when he'd get a follow up appt and was told 2 weeks. That seems a bit far out for an older cat who just had extensive dental work done, but we scheduled it for the 23rd. Fast forward a few days and he has been hardly eating. He had his last dose of pain med this morning and when I called to ask about his lack of appetite and whether 3.5 days of pain relief was adequate, I was left on hold. I think it may be because their Saturdays at the hospital are busy and I called close to closing. Tonight out of desperation I offered him his dry kibble. He's hardly accepted broths, various flavors of canned foods, tuna, even ice cream. So I am trying anything. He was definitely interested in his kibble and managed to swallow a few kernels whole, but eventually gave up. I think his mouth still hurts too bad. So I have a cat who can't eat, is out of pain meds, couldn't get the doc on the phone and their offices are closed tomorrow (Sunday). I hope he will bounce back soon, but right now I feel stressed, unprepared and not well supported. P.S. in researching on my own, I have come to learn that Convenia, the injectable antibiotic they gave him, may be what is suppressing his appetite. It is VERY long acting, so if this is an adverse reaction, it will be an issue for weeks. Also Convenia is actually not targeted to kill the type of bacteria that exists in oral spaces. His breath is kinda foul, but he has no fever. I don't see any pus or other visible signs of infection. Still, knowing that this med is not generally effective for dental bacteria, I now have to worry about whether infection is an issue. My worry is intensifying.... MAJOR EDIT: Shortly (as in minutes) after posting my review, Westside's business manager, Mike D. contacted me. He was able to arrange a follow-up first thing this morning, Father's Day Sunday, which was amazing. Dr. Cupples (and her very sweet assistant) was kind enough to meet me at the hospital and check on Woody on their day off. I can't explain how much I appreciate that. Turns out he does have a mild infection and has lost a few ounces of weight. She changed his antibiotic to liquid, oral Clindamycin, did an antiseptic rinse with some to go home, gave him fluids + B12, and provided samples of a food he may eat more of (Hill's A/D). She also gave him more pain meds as his sutures were starting to open up. He is back home and while not thrilled with all of the fun procedures this morning, he is resting comfortably and not too upset with me. I feel much more at ease now! As such, I am raising my review from 3 to 5 stars. Mistakes and complications happen, but it is how we respond to them that really matter. read more

the "Show Girl" bunked up at Westside Veterinary Hospital for 11 days combined during our travels. usually she travels with us, or we have a home sitter. neither were an option this summer, so i reluctantly agreed to have her boarded. quite attached to the family she is, i expected her to not fare well and be offered a prozac! turns out she did super! the staff is mostly friendly. love, love, love the boarding staff. i feel so much better about leaving our four legged family member here. we also use the veterinary services and really appreciate dr. ron who really concerns himself with your pets best. read more

Top-notch service and care. I wouldn't trust my pets with just any old vet clinic. We've been going to Westside for about four years now. Everyone, from Dr. Campbell to Dr. Bachynski, to Dr. Cupples, to the techs and front desk staff, LOVES animals. They treat our fur babies as if they were their own, and really take the time out to listen to us and give us the best care around. They remember who we are and I never feel like a number or faceless pet owner. All three of our pets have boarded there and received their annual shots there since we've adopted them. Two of them have gotten their spay/neutering done there as well as surgery to remove stones. Not only do they take a genuine interest in our pets, but they always ask how I am doing also (I have many health problems including surviving cancer). When we found our poodle mix, Buster, literally on the street, matted and emaciated and riddled with heartworms and hookworms, Dr. Campbell examined him and decided he was worth saving. We didn't even want to touch him, but Skyler (the vet tech) scooped him up like it was nothing. Three years and (several thousand dollars) later, Buster is one of the best dogs I've ever owned and he is back to (relative) good health. We took a chance on him and saved his life, and it wouldn't have been possible without the good people of Westside. Their staff is always friendly and the wait is usually pretty short. Everyone is knowledgeable and kind, and I wouldn't go anywhere else or trust anyone else with my babies. read more

I created a Yelp account specifically so I could write this review. :) I have been taking my lab here for four years and we have always had a great experience, although our lab has been a very healthy, easy dog. Being able to board here is very nice and convenient too! We recently got a german shepherd puppy and after having her for about a week we noticed something was off. We took her in to Westside and it turns out she has a congenital disease called Megaesophagus, which isn't "curable" but is "manageable". Dr. Vanderford at Westside has been so amazing since we received Summer's diagnosis, from getting second, third, and fourth opinions (literally) from people outside of their office, to emailing me info, to talking to me on the phone basically every single day for a week each time I had a question about how to care for Summer on an ongoing basis. We considered trying to rehome her after we initially received her diagnosis but the support we've received from Dr. Vanderford and Westside has given us the confidence that we can provide the care Summer needs. read more

We walked in not having an appointment today. Saturday and they close at noon. We walked up and let her know we didn't have an appt..could they please have mercy on us. Without skipping a beat, she said of course we can see her. We figured we would be waiting a while, but nope 15 mins later we were in a room. The vet tech (I can't think of her) was awesome! Willow was almost falling asleep in her arms as Dr. Eickelman was explaining stuff to us. We have been looking for a new vet..I think we found one today. We really do appreciate you seeing Willow today and taking good care of her. We will be back with our other two furbabies. read more
