If I could give Claws and Paws a negative five stars I would. This is the second time I have lost a pet within a week of a veterinarian at Claws and Paws stating that the problem my pet was dealing with is minor. This time they said my cat was only suffering with gastritis. Prescribed a case of special food and sent me on my way. My cat has cancer and had they checked her heart and lungs they would have noticed the pleural effusion. The vet didn't even have a stethoscope. Always in a rush to get your pet to "the back" for blood tests. We have spent thousands at this vet over the last two years. They perform A LOT of testing but the weather man is more accurate in his work than this vet hospital. A total of 730 dollars spent in two visits this week. 585 and 145 respectively. Do not risk the life of your pet or waste your hard earned money at this horrible place. My poor cat suffered because Claws and Paws chose to maximize revenue rather than care for my poor cat. My other cat that died within a week of their misdiagnosis had cancer as well. read more

Our dog had to have surgery with drainage tubes placed after surgery. She was boarded for 2 weeks afterwards, then home for two months. Her leg remains swallowed, vet said it appeared ok may be scar tissue or may shrink with time. After two months at home, the stitched area opened to reveal they had sewed drainage tube up inside her leg. We took her back, vet said she had no seen that in her 11 years of practice. She removed tubs and said she didn't charge for removing the tubes but had to charge for the antibiotics. Wait, say what???? You are so kindly removing the tubes you left in her leg at no charge, but are charging for meds to treat a condition you created. Wow! I contact Valley Vet Services the actual owners of Claws and Paws, three times I was ensured someone would contact me immediately. It never happened, no calls at all until my last call and I informed them I was giving them the reviews they deserve. Valley Vet Services and Claws & Paws don't care about their four legged clients or their families. Who knows, the next patient may die as a result of their malpractices. read more

I just want to start this off by saying I hardly ever post negative reviews for businesses where I was displeased. So let the record show things had to be pretty BAD for me to take the time out of my day to sit here and write this review. I brought my dog in for an exam for the first (and last) time to this clinic. I made my appointment in advance, arrived 15 minutes early, and my dog and I were stuck in an exam room to wait until the vet finally showed up 15-20 minutes late for our scheduled appointment (meaning we had been waiting in the exam room for over half an hour- and they were not busy). The reason I brought my dog in was because he had a lump on his side that I wanted to have looked at, as well as multiple strange looking spots all over his body, and our normal vet was such a far drive, I thought I'd give this place a try since it is so much closer to where I live. When the vet finally came in, he barely looked at my dog. He was in the exam room with us for 5 minutes (IF THAT), peeked at my dog for about 10 seconds, and spent the rest of the time talking to me instead of looking at my dog. In these 10 seconds of "examining" my dog, he decided to slap the old "it's skin allergies" label on it, charge me for shampoo that we didn't even need, plus an exam fee of over $60 (for not even looking at my dog) and send us on our way. This man had absolutely NO CARE IN THE WORLD about my dog's wellbeing and it REALLY showed. He just wanted to take my money and send me off. Exactly one month and a day later, my dog started coughing horribly and was acting very sick and lethargic. My dad and I took him to our regular vet, who referred us to a specialist, where he was diagnosed with cancer and given a few days to live. We made the difficult decision to have him put to sleep that day. All this is to say, if this Claws & Paws vet actually cared about my dog (like a VETERINARIAN is supposed to care for ANIMALS), he probably would have caught the cancer a whole month sooner, and I could have been better prepared for my dog's life coming to an end (pain management, planning in advance approximately when it might be time to let go instead of having to make that decision in one day, etc). I will NEVER, EVER bring ANY of my pets here again, and I will ALWAYS let my friends and family know about my baby's story and why they should NEVER take their pets to this money-hungry clinic who doesn't give two craps about the animals they are supposed to be caring for. read more

Claws & Paws gives vets a bad name. Going to this vet is like going to the mechanic as a woman. I literally almost lost my marbles when I had to be firm with what I needed done for my boxer puppy. Then they proceeded to tell me after looking in her ears that they needed to take a sample so they can test to see what bacteria is inside so I can get meds for it. They were just dirty from playing outside - she's a puppy. It was one bad move after another. Never going back! Go elsewhere. And by the way, I brought two dogs in for the visit - each one paid an office visit and one paid a much higher office visit. It was during the week. The front desk people were very nice and was very sweet on the phone. My hamster wellness cost 75-77$ depending on how you round it. The doctor was very sweet and she saved my hamster from jumping off the table (was bit 2x). She gave me lots of advice as well. When I left the front desk gave me a little goodie bag with stuff about their clinic. It was pretty expensive but the service was very great. read more

We brought our dog in for a swollen leg ( he couldn't walk) they recommended they take blood and a x-ray and we told them to take blood ONLY BLOOD then the lady comes in and says we went ahead and did a heart-worm test that we didn't asked for and charged us $70 and they gave him pain pills and antibiotic pills which somehow brought the price to $530 and he can't even take the pills. So, I woke up to my in-laws saying that my dog had eaten a steak and gotten into the trash. That didn't make sense. No one had made steak recently. When I saw what they were referring to, it slowly dawned on me what they thought was a steak was actually a brick of bakers chocolate. My wife came over and showed me two more wrappings: totaling almost a pound of chocolate. Our 60 pound dog had gone crazy and jumped onto a hard to reach counter to get into some baking chocolate. It was off to claws and paws. They opened at 8 on Sunday so i was able to zoom over swap. At that point I didn't know when Fozzy had eaten the chocolate. When I got to the clinic he was taken in within minutes of arriving. Shortly thereafter, I hear "woahhhh!" From the back. Fozzy was saved. See photo for proof. Throughout the process, the vet, dr. Harris, took time to explain everything to me. I could tell she really cared about Fozzy. It made a stressful experience less so. Dr. Harris: thank you. You saved Fozzy's life. read more

I have been with Claws & Paws for 20 years and put my faith and trust in them to take care of my many beloved cats and dogs over those years. I spare no expense for the care of my animals. They are my babies and nothing is more important. Sadly, all of that came to an immediate stop on New Year's Eve. My 3 year old German Shepherd was diagnosed with Glaucoma in his left eye. Dr. Wickle performed the surgery to remove the eye on December 30th at 2pm. My German Shepherd passed away December 31st at 5pm. I spoke with Dr. Wickle on New Year's Eve and she made me aware that she would be available until 4pm. Dr. Wickle left early at 2pm and turned off her cell phone so she would not be bothered for the holiday. Yes, I do understand that everyone has the right to enjoy the hoildays. However, a veterinarian that just performed surgery on a beloved pet should have made herself available in case of a medical emergency. That would have been the professional thing to do. I called Claws and Paws on News Year's Eve because my German Shepherd was in severe distress and I needed medical advise. My German Shepherd was breathing rapidly, his heart rate was extremely fast and he would not wake up. I spoke with Dr. Nicolette and was told specifically to let my German Shepherd ride it out and then give him some over the counter Melatonin. I already had a plethora of medication that Dr. Wickle had prescribed and this was the best medical advise Dr. Nicolette could provide. DISGRACEFUL It was very obvious when I called Claws & Paws that the staff was in a rush to lock up the office for the holiday and not be bothered by a long term customer. Needless to say, 15 minutes later my German Shepherd passed away. I was completed devastated and heartborken. How Could This Possibly Happen??? I decided to research all the medications that were prescribed along with the directions. My research indicated that he was being over medicated. I found many articles on the Internet regarding 2 of the medications that were prescibed and they were a "lethal combination." The combination would lead to "coma and death." Bottom line, Claws and Paws were the ultimate demise of my 3 year old German Shepherd. My German Shepherd never got a chance to live a long, loving, happy, and fulfilled life due to the unprofessional, unethical medical treatment and advise of Claws and Paws. Currently, I have to focus all my energy on my German Shepherd's brother. They were extremely bonded to each other and I do not want to lose him out of pure grief and sorrow. I want to make it perfectly clear that this review is not being written from emotion or spite but to forewarn other customers to do their research before giving their animals medication that is prescribed. I do not want others to suffer the devastating loss of a beloved pet the way that I have. To be with Claws and Paws as a customer, as long as I have, I find absolutely no excuse in the events that transpired. I can no longer be a customer at Claws and Paws. I have been going here since moving to Pearland in 1993. Never a problem before my last visit 5/23/19. At that time Dr. Harris performed an annual physical exam and discovered a broken tooth. I agreed to have the tooth pulled and also a teeth cleaning done. The estimate she gave me included "a comprehensive physical/ wellness exam charge of 63.75. The bloodwork is used to determine the presence of heart worms. This check is necessary for obtaining Trifexis heart worm medication. The next day I requested a neutering operation as well. I received a revised estimate for that surgery too. When I arrived the next day I was given the bill. On it was listed a charge of $63.68 for a " pre-anesthetic profile". I don't know what this is, it wasn't in the estimate, and neither did anyone else at the clinic. I still had not spoken to Dr. Harris. She finally called and left a message two days later. Dr. Harris should have been the first person I spoke to after the operation instead of three clinical staff members who were unable to answer my questions. A "pre-anesthetic profile" should have been covered under the 'comprehensive wellness exam". I think the pre-anesthetic profile charge was excessive ( on a total bill of $1,000+ )and should have been part of the comprehensive wellness exam. Regardless, it should have at least been included in the pre-surgical estimate. I will not be doing business at CPVH in future. I advise people to carefully exam any and all bills received from there. read more

Totally agree, the vets there are ridiculous. For the first 5 years it was okay, my parents took my dog there since he was a puppy, when we noticed after each visit the prices were getting higher and higher, we began to question. THEY DID NOT LIKE TO BE QUESTIONED. It is in every customers/patients right to ask what they are being charged for and whether or not something is necessary. They also were hesitant to give us prescriptions for outside pharmacies because they know they are cheaper outside of the clinic, these people charge ridiculous amount of money and they do not price match their products. They love to suck the money out of people, thankfully I found a better vet anyways with insurance and better payment options. Claws and Paws may seem like they care for the animals but what they are mostly after is your wallet!! *******UPDATE******** 03/14/2014 I posted the review above about two years ago, I rarely login into my yelp account and just noticed this today. I adopted a dog from the Pearland animal control. This place was listed as a clinic that was participating in the discounted rate for neutering ($75). I called and set up and appointment and they took down my credit card for a pre-charge of $75. I told them I was told that this dog was possibly heart worm positive and they said they can still do the neutering on morning of appointment. This $75 included a visit fee and neutering surgery. On morning of visit, I was told that in order to do surgery, I needed to pay 2 blood tests totaling $320, which i declined. I normally take my other dogs to another vet clinic that does not charge this much. They also suggested that I do a stool test (found positive) and said medicine was needed (I said OK). In the end, I did not have my dog neutered which was understood because they required a blood test which i will get done at my usual vet clinic (that does not participate with the adoption center). I was given a bill of $126! Which included a visit fee $57, stool test (~$28), and treatment (~$45). I disputed the charge of $57 since that visit was said to be included in the initial $75 fee i have already prepaid. They declined and said that it was not. In summary, I paid $126 and they still have my $75 in CREDITS which they refused to apply towards my fees for the visit. Overall, this place is very pricey and they seem to only worry about the money. Receptionist assured me that the $75 included visit fee plus surgery, but in the end, it was all a scam. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

She was not eating the way she normaly does, I called and told them about something she really liked to eat and they made sure Abby got it. Everyone there is so professional and caring. The doctors and staff make sure that you are completely informed when you leave. They also make calls to see if the your pet is doing well days after the appointment, you do not find that often. read more

Do not take your pet here!Took my small dog here for cut and teeth brushing. Price has always been $50 +$6 for teeth. My bill was $71. Susanne became irate when I asked for itemized bill. Shook her finger in my face and started yelling. She said she couldn't clip my 5lb dog's nail because she tried to bite her. Really with her paws? But no problem brushing teeth. Her outraged husband walked into the conversation yelling "just pay my wife and get out." He made a negative comment about my age....."you're an old lady 50or is it 60? She explained it to you! Now take your dog and get out and don't come back!" He literally shoved my 5lb dog at me. When I got home I realized my dog did not get her teeth brushed. And smelled like they only wiped her off with the worse cut ever. She also had a slit on her right ear. I understand why they wanted me out in a hurry. But I still don't understand why I paid $71. What a NIGHTMARE. Sadly, we took our elderly 17 year old pug here to be put down. We came here because we used a different vet to put down the sister dog and it just seemed cold and uncaring and we were told that the experience was better at Claws & Paws. Huge mistake. Instead of being as advertised (getting a room together, taking as much time as we needed, a pleasant experience for the dog and then they just fall asleep) My dog was literally tortured for the last hour of his life. Not 5 minutes in to our arrival they took our dog to the back to put in an IV catheter. Ten minutes later we are wondering what is taking so long and start hearing our dog yelping and screaming. We asked the receptionist why our dog was screaming and what was taking so long. Even though there were no other customers, she acted inconvenienced but finally went to check on the situation. To make a long story less long, not one single person in the place could successfully get the IV in. FOUR DIFFERENT PEOPLE HAD TRIED. MY DOG HAD LITERALLY BEEN STABBED WITH A NEEDLE OVER 20 TIMES. He is blind and deaf so had no idea what was happening to him. But even in his weakened state, apparently fought for his life because a sore on his leg had been ripped open and was bleeding as well as all of the 20+ puncture wounds. This was all going on while we sat for 30 MINUTES LISTENING TO OUR DOG SCREAM IN PAIN OVER AND OVER AGAIN. They finally allow my wife to go back and be with him and tell us they are having their "specialist" who was off of work, come in to try. Another 20 minutes later she arrives and gets the IV in successfully the FIRST TRY. SO YOU MEAN TO TELL ME YOUR ENTIRE STAFF WAS INCAPABLE OF PUTTING IN AN IV IN OVER 20 ATTEMPTS AND THIS LADY DOES IT FIRST TRY??? So instead of my dog having a peaceful and happy last hour of his life, eating good treats, being the center of everyone's attention and being loved on; he was put on a cold table, restrained, held down, injured and stabbed over 20 times while screaming for his life. I took a client's dog to them today that I suspected had bloat. I called before the clinic was open, and left a message that I was on my way. They were ready for me as soon as I arrived, and saved the dog's life. Shortly after I got there, the dog crashed. Heart rate over 300 beats per minute, with a blue tongue. She (the Vet) saved him. The support staff were great too, in a horribly stressful situation. Thank you Dr. Wenke, and the other Doctors who helped save this dog's life. Totally great clinic. read more

We took one of our dogs to the clinic some years ago and fell in love with Dr. Wickel. She was fantastic with our 15 yr old. There were all kinds of tests she wanted to run that we thought weren't necessary but we let it pass. Since that first visit 3+ years ago we have been back with other dogs but have not seen Dr. Wickel. The other vets we saw were okay. We had three of our boys neutered there with no problems except for the sales pitch for this test and that test. I was thinking the other day that they must think of themselves like a people hospital where test after test can be done because the insurance will take care of most of it. Not so for most of us who don't have pet health insurance. The constant talk about money is why we hesitated to bring our little puppy to them but we figured they know us and we would be able to get our baby some help. Less than 24 hours after seeing a vet at this clinic OUR PUPPY WAS DEAD! They ran some tests but said they didn't want to risk blowing out a vein to put her on an iv. They sent us home with nausea meds and that was it. We were at the Pearland 288 ER at 230 that morning where she was kept comfortable with IV drugs. They close at 8am so we had to take her to another vet who promptly said she was suffering and we needed to end it. What happened at the CPVH? My guess is that William W. who is the staff member that comments on all these reviews will blame us for her death. We brought our little dog to your clinic trusting that you would help her. You didn't. There are lots of what if's in this situation, one of which falls at your doorstep William W. Your clinic could have saved her but because we were too busy talking about cost, our little angel is dead. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS TO THIS CLINIC. If you read other reviews you will see that the Clinic's spokesman will blame everyone and everything else under the sun. Even going so far as to say that Yelp only posts negative reviews. Not so. I have had lots of positive reviews on Yelp for my company. Maybe instead of being on the defensive you should re-evaluate your business practices and get back to caring about animals more than money. read more

I agree with others, they are pricey but I also have to agree, they do care about the pets, more so than the clients. My dog got into a sago palm seed or tylenol, or so they think, they never found what was wrong with him, his liver failed and he bled to death in 3 days. Initially they interrogated me, asked me how much marijuana he could have eaten. I was livid!!! Never had drugs in my home and I dont use them, after I chewed them out for approaching the subject in an accusatory rather than inquisitory manner, we tried everything to save our dog, xrays, blood transfusions, antibiotics, iv hydration, poor thing had to be put to sleep to end the misery. They were compassionate, patient and they did follow up afterwards. It was over $2000 but I have to say they tried everything we just couldnt figure it out. read more

Claws and Paws is an AMAZING veterinary hospital. We have been seeing Dr. Wickel for 10+ years and she loves our furry babies like her own. She is so kind, caring, compassionate and GENUINE. She cried with us when we had to put one of our cats to sleep. Also folks have complained here on Yelp about cost but when I express a concern the staff is MORE than willing to give me different price options. We bring all our animals together for the multi pet discount. For two of our cats we have had to go to a vet specialist (Gulf Coast) - for one cat we had a good experience with pulmonary and the other time we had a HORRIBLE impersonal experience where our requests were completely ignored (the vet surgeon opened our 12 yr old kitty up, saw she had a huge abdominal tumor but decided to operate because their "might" be a chance she could respond with chemo - she died two months later and in our opinion suffered a lot). We would much rather have had Dr. Wickel do the surgery in retrospect because she listens to us and cares for our animals quality of life. Her staff are amazing - kind, helpful, gentle, courteous and friendly. They always take time to answer my questions patiently. Dr. Wickel or other vets ALWAYS call me back promptly with test results - I know Dr. Wickel has stayed after hours to call me on the promised day no matter what. I cannot say enough good things about this practice. I only wish it were closer to our home as we live clear across Pearland! You won't be disappointed! read more

These Yelp reviews drive me nuts! I absolutely loved the doctors and staff at Claws and Paws and wouldn't have taken our little girl, Sarahbear, anywhere else! "Wouldn't have" because after 15 years, a very long time for a large female black Lab, our little girl passed away just recently. But I'm certain one of the main reasons she lived such a long and healthy life was because of the folks at Claws and Paws. She was always very happy to see Dr. Wickel and had been seeing her since she was a pup, from spaying, to fatty tumor removals, to checkups and teeth cleanings. The Claws and Paws staff give 100% of their love and care to their clients, furred, scaled, or feathered.
