The assessment and examination was extremely thorough and very detailed. Dr. Shults recommended Low Level Laser Therapy for Piglet's leg as well as some home exercises for other muscles. Dr. Shults didn't mind sitting with me until I understood everything that was going on. Piglet was thrilled to see LeighAnn each and every time we went for her laser therapy. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by LeighAnn with enthusiasm and kindness. Unfortunately, Piglet had to undergo 2 more surgeries on her leg. The recovery from those surgeries has been made easier by Dr. Shults and LeighAnn. Piglet was given cold compression therapy as well as laser therapy after surgery. After 2 weeks, Piglet went in for a re-evaluation and we went home with updated exercises and goals. Dr. Shults made several recommendations on how to make the exercises fun for Piglet. Dr. Shults and LeighAnn have made Piglet's recovery easy on both Piglet and I. The care and attention that Piglet has received has been absolutely fantastic and reassuring.

We had just moved to this area a few days prior, so we called the closest emergency vet we could find. The staff on the phone were able to calmly handle the situation (and calm us down), tell us exactly what to do, and we were waiting for us the second we arrived at the hospital. Once at the hospital, they took our fur baby back, and stabilized her and her vitals. Dr. Shuttleworth came out to tell us she was stable, no more seizures, and presented us with all of our options moving forward. He was calm and reassuring. The staff was ALL friendly, and knowledgeable, and most importantly, not pushy (allowed us time to figure out what the right path was for our family). They were up front about ALL options, pricing, and suggestions. I really appreciated the staff being supportive, and giving us direction. I felt they were concerned, receptive to all of our questions and fears, and really made our situation better (less scary for us). Also to note- I was not available the day after (while our fur baby was at the hospital having procedures done) and I was able to call once off work to get the full report of all the testing, firsthand from the neurologist (Dr. Warren). I appreciated him taking the time to explain tests & labs to both my partner and me (was not annoyed at all that he had to repeat all the information twice during the day) Moving forward, we will have follow- up appointments with Dr. Warren, at the same location. I appreciate that they have several specialists here, if you need one after your initial ER visit. Yes, it is expensive, just as any animal hospital is. I don't think their prices are much different from other emergency vets we've been to (for previous, non-related issues). Loved this ER vet and would recommend to others in the area. From the initial call with Mackenzie at the front desk, the vet techs like Becca, veterinarian Dr. Lyle, and neurologist Dr. Warren, everyone was caring and helpful! Dr. Lyle provided prompt attention to triage my dog. She offered several options for care including a neurology visit, which was selected. Dr. Warren asked many questions to gain a clear picture of what happened prior to neurology imaging. While I hope we don't need to go back, I'm grateful to know TVRH is there if needed.

They were not transparent about things like wait times, and you do have to hand off your dog. Had they told us that it would be 10 hours, we would have gone home instead of circling Greensboro, waiting for a call. It would have been nice to get some sleep. But I was told that it would be "a couple of hours". The ability to get updates and information during such haunting times is so important -- and this is where I think they failed. It's an emergency hospital, so they're expensive. I paid $1000 for what my vet would have done for $300, but they saved him because they were open and my vet was not. Take that for what it is.

Still, at 2 in the morning, a really awesome doctor talked me through why I shouldn't worry, got to know my guy, and since there was nothing wrong with him, I didn't get charged anything. The fact that I was not nickel-and-dimed for a problem that didn't exist earned this place my trust. Last night, one of the worst things happened. My dog of 15 years went from being her sparkle-eyed, tippy-tappy, singing and dancing self in the span of 24 hours and by midnight, she was puking blood and couldn't get her tongue back in her mouth. I came straight over. There's always this shame with vets. I've had experiences where I can see the looks, the grumbles, the judgements. When you're poor, you let appointments slide, you want to do better for your animals, but you can't always. My husband and I have been battling foreclosure for the last year or so, and we let some things that didn't seem pressing slide. The woman at the front desk didn't shame me when I said I wasn't up to date on Molly's vaccines or bloodwork. She didn't shame me when I talked about her bad teeth. She saw the scared human in me and offered grace. I didn't get her name or the nurse tech's name, but the doctor introduced herself as Angel. Different pronunciation, I'm probably spelling it wrong actually. But it fits. She was exactly what I imagine an angel to be. She was direct. She told me my options. She explained that my dog was essentially a 90 year old in dog years. I couldn't afford the treatment to even try to get my girl back. End stage kidney disease. My husband wasn't with me, so I had to face this decision alone. Angel sat with me, held my hands, offered what comfort she could, asked about how I was feeling. I've been through a euthanasia before with another dog. I was not allowed to hold my other dog. I was panicked and I knew my distress was scaring her, but I couldn't hold it in. I watched as her pupils dilated and her heart stopped and her body went limp. I read once that your sense of hearing is the last thing you lose in death, and for years I have carried the guilt of knowing that as her soul slipped away, the last thing she heard was her mama crying "no, oh my god, please no." But Wake Veterinary Medical Center gave me the chance and the ability to be strong for my baby. I was settled in a quiet room with my baby in my arms. I held her as she went. I held her after she was gone, until her body cooled, whispering how much I loved her. They didn't take away the pain of grief for me, but they eased the trauma of it. Molly's final moments were calm. She was held and safe and warm. That's more than my others got. I know I told the nurse tech that I knew it wasn't her job to manage *my* emotions, but she stayed and listened anyway. She held my baby like it was her baby. That's not common, from what I've seen. Something awful was not compounded on by judgmental stares and rolled eyes. I didn't get the chance to stop and thank them. I was numb by the time I left, just focused on not crashing my car on the way home. But I really, really wanted the people of this place to know how much everything they did meant to me. All three of the women I interacted with, thank you. You gave me something in my worst moments so I was able to be strong for my brave girl. Words aren't enough here. Just, thank you.

Yikes. Our little…read moreKitty suddenly showed signs of weakness. Eyes were rolling back in head. Made wimpering noises. He was semi-responsive... but looking rough. Thinking something was wrong we brought him here. The vet recommended we do a $7k MRI, when we suggested other things like pumping the stomach or some other course of action- they said it wasn't advised. After we DEMANDED to get our kitty back, they undid the signing of our papers to euthanize the little kitty and they gave us a little lecture about how the cat had been given an IV of tap water by us and it was bad because my mom had put water in his bag or something (happened before I got there, but what competent office just leaves a cat unattended in a way my mom could do something like that) and apparently that means it might have "parasites"- then gave us an antibiotic. They told us how to administer the antibiotic, and we asked if they'd given him some or could show us, they basically parried our soft request and insinuated we could do it ourselves. They then said it was "against their medical opinion" to take him home and made us wait to get him back for about 15 minutes with us terrified he was seizing or freaking out cold in a white medical room alone. They delivered him back- and he just looked very weak and tired- but he was breathing fine. Since I got there a little after they brought him there, I was surprised that they would suggest "putting our cat to sleep"... instead of just suggesting he get some sleep. We brought him home, gave him kitty milk, and little by little, he showed more signs of alertness. At first he was opening his eyes. Then his breathing regulated. Soon, he was sitting up when we gave him kitty milk. About four hours after we brought him home, he was able to stand on his own. Next, he was walking to his own litterbox. After a little catnap, by 8pm he's walking around, purring, and jumping up onto the couch (as well as doing a little bit of bread kneading). I would probably go with someone a little less quick to assume things are fatal immediately so you don't lose a member of your family because of their "medical opinion". Ps right now he's licking his fur grooming himself as if it was a regular weekend. This happened earlier today.

Carolina Veterinary Specialists Winston-Salem…read more We brought our cat, Homey, who had a life-threatening urinary tract infection, and a blocked bladder to them after Banfield referred us to them. With no waiting, they immediately took him in for a thorough examination and within minutes, the doctor explained in great detail what he was up against, and what they could do for treatment. We agreed on the treatment and the costs, which was reasonable considering the seriousness, and they took him in for treatment to begin. They kept us updated by calling us directly of his prognosis several times each day, which was great. After his surgery, they called to let us know that it was successful and he is in recovery. They also kept us updated on his recovery progress. Later, the next evening, they called to let us know that he can come home that evening if we wanted, even though it was late at night, were still decided to come get him. When we got there, the doctor gave us clear, and very detailed instructions on his recovery care, the diet he would need to help prevent a reoccurrence, and the meds to give him, and how. She was great and answered all of our questions and gave wonderful advice. They saved his life! When we got him home, Homey was so happy and grateful, he knew that his life was saved, and happy to be home with us. The staff, all of them, at Carolina Veterinary Specialists are truly the best! It's obvious that they really care and love what they do. We are so grateful to CVS for saving our cat's life and we will recommend them to all of our friends who have pets. Thank you so much!

I SUGGEST you lower your fees for an MRI so pets can get the proper care & diagnosis they need! I'll NEVER recommend them or go there again. thank God a tech vet friend and my granddaughter recognized the signs and began treatment and got her to another ER today. she's headed to regular vet tomorrow for confirmation but her temp is already declining with instructions of treatment from 2nd ER

The team loved on him and was great about updating me on any changes and his condition throughout the duration of his almost week long stay. I'm so grateful to have my boy back home alive and well thanks to this amazing team. They even sent him home with a bag and some cans of the new food he has to eat with his condition.

My 16 yr old dog spent the night vomiting bile and then being extremely lethargic the next morning…read more I went to TVRH and my dog did his normal greeting to the vet tech, licking her hand and wagging his tail. They told me he had an infection, all bloodwork was normal besides liver enzymes were elevated (my primary vet said he was not concerned because the levels weren't high). They recommended being kept there for 24-48 hours to get fluids and antibiotics in him and then re-evaluate (this was around 3pm). I received a call at 6:45am the next morning saying he was doing great, had a strong appetite and was ready to go home. I wanted him to stay in their care for a few more hours at least because I wanted to be sure given his advanced age. My girlfriend picked up at 1:30pm and I payed the $2300 for his 22 hours of care. My girlfriend got him home 30 minutes later at 2pm and after she got him out of the car, he lost his balance while urinating and she had to carry him in and put him on our bed. She said she just thought he was exhausted. I got home at 6pm, 4.5 hours after discharge and he looked worse than when I left him with TVRH the day before. We could not get him to eat, even human food that he normally loves. I wanted more information on why he was discharged and their shift change of doctors is at 7pm/7am. I called at 6pm and let the receptionist know of his worsened state and I wanted a call back immediately from the doctor. Well, 7pm came and went and I didnt hear from Dr Peddy. Thursday came and went, could hardly get my dog to drink water and still wouldn't eat anything. I scheduled a visit to my primary vet for Friday. After examining him and his bloodwork, he couldn't find anything wrong with him but said, we've got to get him eating and drinking. So he gave him a strong dosage of steroids to try and kickstart his appetite and give him more energy. Unfortunately, it did not work. We scheduled to have him euthanized and did that at our primary vet yesterday. I am extremely livid that I was told he had a strong appetite, yet he never ate after returning from TVRH. Also, he was in worse shape than when I dropped him off the day before. And the fact that after spending $2300 for 22 hours of care, I could not even get a call back for a 5 minute conversation about why they told me he was ready to discharge at 6:45am that morning. I will never take an animal here again and recommend either state or another local emergency vet instead if you truly care about your pet.
