Have a barely used 5 yr old Simmons DA25 drum amp that popped recently rendering it unusable, so I just called VG based on these Yelp reviews. Spoke to Matt about it, who was kind, patient and professional, and we had to agree that my $100 amp was going to cost about the same to repair it...if able. Ergo, another fine looking physically mint condition piece of equipment has to be replaced and recycled. I found another luthier with an astounding reputation ... but was available by appointment only and charged nearly what an instrument cost to do the repairs. While waiting in the lobby for Adam to put some finishing touches on one of my instruments, I was able to observe Neil Smith working on an electric 6-string bass. He was testing the neck from top to bottom playing soft and loud. Then he turned his attention to the pick-ups. There was no question in my mind that he knew exactly what he was doing. So I have been looking for a shop for a while. I recently found Vegas guitars because of their 5.0 rating and man can I say it is deserved. First, I called to get some info about a set up and having some pick ups installed and everyone I talked to was nice and very helpful. I took the guitars in and they walked through each guitar and what I wanted to have done and took detailed notes. They quoted me for the work and quoted a few weeks to have it done. Best service I could have asked for! I had a Gretsch Rancher Falcon that was shipped by guitar center with a truss rod issue. I took it to Neil Smith and was immediately taken care of. He's super professional, a nice guy, and does things the right way. I had initially brought my guitar to guitar center. This is where I purchased it from and after a thorough analysis of the Gretsch warranty, I felt as though my issue would be taken care of by guitar center. Long story short, they did not take care of my issue. The store manager and the employees of the guitar center on Charleston here in Vegas are unprofessional, unhelpful, rude, and are quite literally, liars. I am a novice guitar player, at best, and was leery of taking my guitar to a "luthier" to work on, due to the expected cost and not sure if I would be taken advantage of. Neil and his folks did a setup for me on an EART headless 6 string I bought off of Amazon on a whim. He did a great job, and worked in a timely manner, and his staff treated me as if I was the most important customer they had. I had a bad string that unwound the first time I played it after getting it back, and he replaced it no questions asked, and it plays well. I had a professional guitar player buddy of mine, who recommended Neil to begin with, test it out and he was very impressed with his work, as well. Neal is a great resource if you need help with getting your guitar back in working order. I have a 1991 PRS that I dropped off at the big box places before and they wouldn't put in the time to make it right. It was rattling and had fret problems. I simply have to write about Neil Smith's Vegas Guitars Custom Shop. I have many guitars, and have been disappointed that I could not find a high quality luthier to address setup work on instruments. I am no longer disappointed! I found Neil Smith using an Internet search, and found his site to be of interest, since I had a Les Paul which seemed to have some high frets, but I was too afraid to take it anywhere local. I set up a time to bring the guitar in, you can't just 'walk in,' as his shop is small, a one man operation, plus his assistant, Susi, who is also wonderful! When I got to the shop, I was astounded at Neil's obvious attention to detail. He was anxious to discuss all aspects of guitars with me, and his years of experience gave me that "warm fuzzy feeling" I'd never found in a Las Vegas luthier. While I had not been expecting to have this particular guitar receive a total setup, after talking to Neil, I was convinced that that is exactly what it needed. Not to say I was talked into something, just that his logic made complete sense to me. I was not in a hurry to get the guitar back, but I got a call in less than a week, telling me it was ready. Now, I must tell you that this guitar already had super low action, even with the fret problem. I had not expected that the action could have gotten any lower. But it was, indeed, amazingly lower! The nut slots were perfect, the frets were crowned and smoothed and look like jewelry. It felt like a different guitar, and this from an instrument that was already outstanding! I have taken one other instrument to Neil, a Gibson Historic Korina Explorer, and it, too, got the same setup, simply perfect! I plan on having many more of my guitars set up by Mr. Smith. Oh, and if you're in the market for a new, custom guitar, he does that, too. Spectacular work, from the few of those I've had the privilege to see. In the interest of complete transparency, after my first experience, I've since done some photography work for some of Mr. Smith's guitars. Neil has done four setups for me, and all were amazing. In one case, I had a small issue with the fret ends (I was admittedly super picky) and he took it back and cleaned them up to perfection. Another one was on a fairly inexpensive instrument, and it came back playing better than some of my more expensive guitars.
