This is has been our bike repair place of choice, for our mountain and road bikes, for the last couple of years. Recently I dropped my wheel off with a broken spoke. Thr owner remembered my name (even though its my husband who normally frequents the shop) and the information about when I had bought the wheel last year. He was also kind enough to tune my gears for me whilst I temporarily use another wheel. When he noticed the bearings were a little loose he tightened them up. For such a small town-- they are f-in' lucky to have such a top notch bike store/shop. I went in here after my bike started clicking. push. click. push. click. push. click. I was done "putting up" with the noise. The guy behind the counter was busy fixing something , but asked me a bunch of questions and then gave me an estimate. I have had bad service from bike shops of recent (B & L in Davis has gone waaayyyyy down hill) and they were so frank and honest here. They were able to fix my bike while I ate lunch so I could bike back to Davis. Yay! Warning: There are some serious bikes for sale here. $$$$ I was starting to fall in love with both an Argon 18 and Innerlight-- I was encouraged to take them for a ride. I don't live in Winters. But I do live in nearby Napa. I agree with the first reviewer that they carry high end road equipment (along w/ mid-range gear), but I also wanted to add that their repair & service staff are very friendly, competent & willing to work within timelines (something I found isn't always the case w/ bike shops). One of the attractions for many to road bikes is the "stuff" associated: wheels, frames, high "zoot" items, etc. Winters may be a town of 15k but this shop is worth a stop if you're into road cycling & happen to be in the area. They also carry a collection of time trial & triathlon bikes. Scott is one of their main brands & seeing an integrated seatpost tri-bike actually in a shop to test (I bought one) is rare, indeed. read more

Myke built a set of wheels for me that my previous builder did not do correctly (kept losing tension). Myke did an absolutely AMAZING job. These are the truest, straightest wheels I've ever seen. I live in Sacramento so it's a bit of a drive but well worth it. Next wheelset I'm having Myke build that too. read more

I was on a 200km Randonneuring Brevet on Saturday October 19th and broke a spoke on my front wheel when in the Crocket area. I decided to continue to ride to Winters (our Lunch stop) in hopes that a bicycle shop could repair my wheel. I managed to safely get to Winters and after asking a couple of locals I found the Velo City Bicycle Center. James was working on a bicycle and said he could replace the spoke. I was very impressed by the quality of his work. He even had a Phil Wood spoke cutter! He took great care to ensure the replacement spoke was the correct size and in truing the wheel. He provided excellent support to other customers while I waited. I was confident the wheel would hold through any of the downhills back to Rodeo and encountered no further issues! A very fortunate find and highly recommend this shop. read more

I love this bike shop. They gave one of my bikes the best tune up ever. I've also stopped in with minor bike issues while I've been out riding and they always helped me out - whether it be fixing a flat, making a minor adjustment or two. They've never overcharged or taken advantage, and sometimes they didn't charge for a minor adjustment - and that minor adjustment made a huge difference in the comfort and safety of my ride. I'm giving Velo City Bicycles a 5 star rating mainly because the owners are so amazingly nice. I've recently gained much interest in biking (before....go out mountain biking once in a blue moon, and it was my way of getting places, but....), so I've started building up endurance. I decided to go on a nice 30 mile ride, and lo and behold-- I got a flat. Being fairly inexperienced, I wasn't carrying around a tube or tools. Luckily, I noticed the thorn in my tire when I got to Winters. Unlike many cycling stores (and this was more geared toward road biking-- even worse!), there was no pretentiousness. A nice couple owned it and seemed to love helping me-- they showed me how to do it myself, gave me a map of Yolo County bike trails, gave me tips for getting started with serious cycling, and were just extremely friendly. I figured I may as well support them, since I liked them so much, and got a really cute (believe me...I hate cycling clothes normally) half zip women's jersey for 40% off! Plus, Winters is really really cute, in that old narrow streets brick buildings small charming town with an intact 1906 railroad bridge sort of way. Stop by some time! read more

While I live out of the area, I visit Winters often for family reasons. I have been taking my road bike to Velo City for several years (2007). Myke and James are THE BEST mechanics around this area (by far). Anyone who walks in can feel completely confident that they will treat you fairly, honestly, and respectfully, no matter what. Never any pressure to buy something or buy up a level from what you're considering. My wife and I purchased two Scott bikes from Velo Cty and they have been A+ in every respect. Velo City Bike Center Rocks! This is a great bike store in Winters, esp. the owner. He made an emergency repair for me on Saturday pm. I was riding with a group from Orinda to Davis (90 mi) on a COLD, FOGGY day, and broke a spoke on the rear wheel about 5 miles from Winters. The wheel went way out of true (low spoke wheel) and I was able to nurse the bike into Winters. We located the bike shop and I asked the owner if he could help me out. "Yep" was his reply, he took my bike to the back, broke down the rear wheel, replaced the spoke, put the thing back together and I was on my way in about 25 minutes! And for a very reasonable price. I just got my beautiful road bike back with the aerobars and front hydration system, as well as a full tune up and I wish I could give this place TEN STARS. Seriously, if you want some personal attention, someone who directs you to the BEST option and not the most EXPENSIVE, go to Myke at Velo. Myke is the kinda guy who would (very patiently...) stand with me and explain my bike top to bottom if I needed him to and then he would spend hours on research to find me the answers I need, but somehow couldn't find on my own. I feel so lucky to have these guys in my corner...to fix my bike, to guide my choices, to make me feel as if I'll be the most kick a** cyclist out on the course (especially when I know I'm not ;). I fixed my third flat of the day on a Saturday about three miles from Winters, so I back tracked to Velo City. Hot and tired, they guys there got me going again quickly by changing my tire and resupplying my tubes and CO2. They didn't have the tires I would have preferred, but the one they sold me was comparable (researched after I got home.) Service was friendly, efficient and I felt comfortable with them handling my Cervelo P5. I'm only giving it 4 stars because my experience was limited. I would definitely go back. read more

the owner of Velo City, "Mike" is about the best bike mechanic I have found. If you're looking to solve a problem concerning a squeak, rattle or other noise, he's the "bike exorcist". He also built my Cervelo (purchased as a frameset from another shop) from scratch, recommending various components over others. Been a while since anybody had reviewed-- thought I'd leave my 2 cents here. I consider myself quite nit-picky when it comes to bicycle work. I've been to Davis Wheelworks and Freewheeler Bicycle Center for wheel truing and derailleur adjustments. For both shops, I've taken the bike back and asked for it to be redone. I decided to drive an extra half hour to visit this store, and I was not disappointed. James took care of me both times-- he went out of his way to explain what he noticed about my wheel when truing it. The second time, I had a crankset replaced and front derailleur adjusted. I had tried adjusting the FD with some success, but he had it completely dialed in. The crankset preload was perfect, and I've had no problems with either part since. The highest compliment I can give to a mechanic is that he treats your bike as his own-- and James certainly does. If you're trying to decide between this versus other bike shops, I highly recommend visiting Velo City first. The turnaround time for my job was 1 day (may vary based on season), and the pricing was $10 less than what Wheelworks and Freewheeler quoted. (Story about Freewheeler and Wheelworks: When I first started road biking, I turned to Wheelworks to adjust my rear derailleur and true my rear wheel. Paid $45, and I couldn't tell any improvement in shifting. Wheel was well done. Took it back after a day, and the mechanic (who was talking to his friends) turned the inline adjusters a few times, rapidly shifted up and down the cassette, and told me it was fine. I went home, spent 30 minutes on YouTube following tutorials, and had it dialed in much better. They are under new management now, so hopefully things are better. At Freewheeler, I took my front wheel to get trued-- I got it back with two of its bladed spokes rotated almost 90 degrees. I was told this was "normal" and "just how aero spokes are when trued". It took another hour of waiting and two more people working on it before the spokes were oriented correctly and the wheel trued). read more

A friend referred me to Velo City Biycle Center in Winters and I always have excellent service from their top notch mechanic James. I won't go anywhere else.
