I'll leave out the personal details of my services, but I appreciate that they work quickly, maintain truly exceptional cleanliness throughout the spaces, and are very good at reading the room--friendly enough to make you feel comfortable, but absolutely able to match the customer's preferred style. I usually come in for a Brazilian with Whitney, who is phenomenal, but last night, my appointment was with Idalys. I was a little nervous purely because of routine and familiarity. Idalys did such an amazing job, she was great! She used a mix of hard wax and soft wax. She made the experience really comfortable and safe. The service was done after 20 minutes. I had my first appointment at Velvet waxing studio this morning with Idalys and it was incredible. I usually get a Brazilian at European Wax Center in Menomonee Falls, WI, but while being a student at UW this location is much more convenient for me. Velvet is located right next to Noodles and Company on State St, making the walk from campus very easy and not too strenuous. Velvet is very quaint and the vibe is girly and relaxing which eased my nerves before my appointment. I was pleasantly surprised that they had jewelry, candles, beauty products, and slippers for sale, and I purchased a pair of slippers for 50% off. The establishment is incredibly clean and well maintained, and Idalys happily greeted me for my appointment. Once the appointment began, she educated me on the difference between soft wax and hard wax, and that if I needed to change any aspect of how she was waxing me during the appointment she would be happy to do so. Idalys was so friendly and made great conversation during the appointment, and encouraged me to ask for a break if needed throughout the session. Idalys did such a great job and made my first appointment very pleasant. I am very happy with the results and now feel like the idea of getting waxed is much less daunting since I have Velvet close to me, it is incredibly easy to book an appointment online, and I know the experience will be relaxing and efficient. read more

I had heard such great reviews from customers about this place so I decided to give it a try. I am a huge fan of sugar waxing, especially the Sugaring NYC locations, so I booked a sugaring underarm as and a sugaring Brazilian on a later date. At my underarm appointment the staff was great, the studio was very clean, and the general ambiance was nice. My biggest issue came from the wax itself. Usually when a wax is described as 'sugaring' the esthetician typically uses warm sugar wax in their hand and using the flicking method to remove hair (I prefer this method because it's great for thin hair and environmentally conscious). My esthetician however applied the not hot enough sugar wax with a wooden stick to my armpits and used a strip to take it off. Their website never specified how this service would be preformed so I assumed a 'sugaring' wax would be how it is typically done. Just a little disappointed with my results and the wax itself. I canceled my Brazilian appointment right after and I probably will not be returning. read more

I have had a myriad of Brazilian waxing experiences, but my experience with Lily was by far the best not to mention the smoothest outcome I have ever had. I was able to get a slot from a cancellation one day ahead which worked perfectly. It was a super hot day and they were so nice and offered me water, the facilities were lovely and clean and the experience was quick and calm and Lily checked in the whole time. Although I was pretty satisfied with my 'Velvet' wax, I paid 50% more than I typically pay for a much more thorough (and painless) wax with my esthetician in New York. Although everything looked fine when I left the studio, I did have to do further clean-up with a pair of tweezers when I got home. However, for the options in the area, I think that the Velvet estheticians are still some of the best. Came here today for a brow tint and wax with Megan. I was late because I got confused about the time and she was still able to accommodate me. I like my brows really really dark and even though it took a little longer she still did a great job and was super nice about it. Found out that her Husband is from Edmonton too! I was super happy and grateful that she was still able to fit me in even though I got my times mess up! Sorry! This shop is really neat and clean. The decor is pretty and the receptionist was really nice. They also have the bed for eyebrow waxing. This was good for me because I prefer to lie down when I get my brows done because I get less hair on my face and eyes. Not only is the environment darling, the little extras go a long way. Upon entering the salon, you'll be asked whether you'd like a fresh flavored water. So far, I've had cucumber, strawberry and pomegranate. All were refreshing. Upon the conclusion of your appointment, you'll be offered a free piece if chocolate. Oh, and then there's the appointment itself. Everyone here is a waxing expert, though Maryna is especially good. My advice: if you're given the choice, try the hard wax. It'll change your life. When I first moved up here, I was worried about not having a good place to get my brows done. I hate going to nail places that wax too, because I always breakout and my brows end up thinner than I'd like. I was used to getting waxed at Ulta with the Benefit Brow method, and it was definitely a (good) change of pace when I started going to Velvet. It's got a great atmosphere, with a hip design, and peaceful music. I always leave there relaxed (surprising after a wax, I know) and kind of wish they did massages too because that would be the kind of place I'd love to go to! I have now been waxed by three different women, and they have all been highly skilled and enjoyed all of them. This past time though I met Tracy, one of the owners and we discussed a plan to better fill out my brows. This is something that I have been wanting for a while now, but foolishly never spoke up. Everyone there has been great, but I was most impressed working with Tracy. She asked if I broke out after, tweezed a couple of other random hairs, and followed up the wax with cover-up and some lip gloss! I should note though these are all regular practices there, which just shows what kind of service you get at Velvet! Going to Velvet is well worth your money, and you get the best quality service. Velvet is wonderful. I bought a Groupon for a service there last fall, and have been going regularly since then. Tracy is amazing - she listens to what customers want, and executes it perfectly. The waxing itself is also about as painless as it can realistically be. She's also great to talk to, and an extremely insightful person. She's definitely made the typical 30-45 minute waxing session way more interesting and fun! The whole space is clean, hip, and comfortable. Online booking is easy and reliable, though you can book by phone or in person as well. I never considered waxing until I was getting ready for my destination wedding. My first trip to Velvet was terrifying...I was sure it was going to be so awkward and hurt like hell. I had a velvet and underarms done...and it was underwhelming...in a very good way. In fact after my appointment I went home to wax my fiancés back with the microwave stuff from Target (he would kill me if he knew I put this on yelp), and after one swipe that nearly ripped his skin off, I insisted that we get right back in the car and go to Velvet...so we did! All of the staff members are so genuinely kind and take the time to make sure that you are getting results that are up to your personal standards and the salon's high standards. Went here to get an underarm wax for my wedding and had a very lovely experience. Their storefront is unassuming, but the inside is very chic and welcoming. The woman who did my waxing was very kind and professional, although she did make the mistake of assuming I was in for a brow wax (I get it, my eyebrows are fuzzy). However, all was forgotten with her quick and tidy waxing job, which was relatively painless and actually kind of relaxing. She also gave me a complimentary trim and minor clean-up tweeze of the aforementioned fuzzy brows so I wouldn't have to do it myself. Saved me some effort for the big day. I am very picky about my eyebrows. Velvet can definitely be TRUSTED to do a good job, so when you're at school don't be afraid to go to Velvet. Best Brazilian I've ever had! It was quick (less than 20 minutes) which is always a bonus...plus I left feeling EXTREMELY smooth and my skin felt conditioned, not dry. No stray hairs in sight! Their Brazilians are about $10-$15 more expensive than I usually pay in Chicago, but I don't mind forking out the extra money here because the quality is worth it! The only detractor I have, I didn't deduct stars for because I'm not sure if this has something to do with their services or if there's some other factor at play....but of all the Brazilians I've gotten, I did seem to see hair coming back much more quickly after this one (started coming in after ~1 week when normally I'm good for at least 2, usually 3 weeks). read more

Got a Brazilian with Lily W, I don't usually write reviews especially negative ones but I wasn't very happy with the wax. It was extremely quick but the hair wasn't waxed with its root so it started growing back a lot quicker than it usually does. It's only 3rd day and I'm seeing growth that I usually notice only by the end of the week from other Brazilian waxing experiences that I've had. The price is pretty high and I don't think it matches with the service. Really was looking forward to liking this place but unfortunately won't be coming back :( read more

Velvet is such a wonderful studio! I had the absolute best Brazilian wax with Maryna. She went above and beyond to talk to me about previous waxes (what went well and what did not) and she altered her wax based on that. They offer traditional hot wax, hard wax, and sugaring, so you can find the best for your skin. She was very thorough but still quick and as painless as a wax could be. She did her best to keep redness down while still making her she removed all the hair. Madison has lots of waxing options, but I will only go here! My favorite and best waxes have only come from Velvet. All of the technicians use great technique which is the most important to me. They make sure each hair is completely uprooted and not broken in the process (and if there are any stubborn one's they pluck tediously). They have hard wax if skin is too sensitive to regular. They focus on pampering using hot towels and soft fabrics etc. Each of the girls working there is sooo nice and are extremely professional, letting you set the pace for how conservative the whole process is. And the best part is how efficient they are, you get in and out without feeling rushed. The salon is beautiful, they run on time for appointments, and BRI is the best technician there (go see her!). read more

Finally! A fabulous brazilian wax in Madison! I moved to Madison from San Diego a few years ago and could not find an estheician who could give a brazilian correctly. I finally gave up and started doing them myself (yeah, that was fun) until I saw the Velvet Waxing Studio. I figured since they do nothing but waxing, they should know what's up. And they do. It was fast, fairly painless, professional and clean. They wear gloves and do not double dip the wax (which might seem like basic sanitary practice, but given the horrible waxes I've had in Madison before, I thought I'd mention it). It's not overpriced. Many places want to charge $80 for a brazilian. I saw Kylene and she was great. They give you a tea tree oil wipe and hot towel afterwards which was a really nice touch. The salon was really close to campus, right off of State St and I showed up was immediately offered water w/strawberries in it. Nice touch. Also of note: conciliatory chocolate bowl. Kylene was super friendly, I told her what I wanted and that I was pretty novice. The whole wax took about 15 minutes, and Kylene talked me through it. I moved to Madison and heard about Velvet through a friend. She recommended Maryna and I have to say, #1 what a great friend and #2 Maryna is AWESOME. What exactly do you mean by 'awesome', you might ask? She is quick, friendly, funny, and thorough. These encounters (read: brazilian waxing) are oftentimes awkward, uncomfortable, etc. but Maryna does her job and does it WELL. You're still going to feel pain but it will be over before you know it. The prices are slightly higher than what I'm used to paying back home but with service that excellent, I didn't even bat an eye. read more
