A bit smaller than the Venissimo store on Washington St., but no less interesting and useful, this shop offers a range of cheeses that will make you a better host, or cook, or cheese snob, or binge cheese eater, wherever your interests might lie. But parking for this Venissimo is effed up since some genius replaced the few available spaces with picnic tables. Not sure how to deal with that, other than to park a few blocks away and Uber to the store, or simply drive over to Mission Hills for the more considerate, more convenient version of this shop. read more

I'm so thankful I found this gem. My boyfriend and I aren't from here. And every time we visit the area, we love going to tasting rooms. But it does eventually get expensive. So today, we just wanted to relax in our Airbnb with some previously purchased wine and a charcuterie board. For $24, I got 2 cheeses and 2 meats. That's a steal, given it also came with marcona almonds, chocolate covered almonds, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, cornichons, fig spread, flatbread crackers, dried cranberries, corn nuts, and chocolate covered oranges. And garnishes of rosemary and flowers. This level of customization is unheard of at wine tasting rooms and wine bars. At most, you can either select the previously established pairings or you can do chef's selection. I've learned the latter tends to be whatever the chef has leftover. Rovi, who helped me with my selection, and Kendall, who helped me with the arrangement, were so wonderful to work with. Very patient with all my questions and had great recommendations. It helped that I explained what I intended to drink, and what flavors I like and don't like. Everything I bought were things I would've never bought on my own, and I'm happy they made the suggestions. (Note: The Noord Hollander really does have a butterscotch finish! *mind blown*) From the buying process (which really felt like a consultation) to the actual price, this was way more value than what I had expected. For $10 you get a sample of four different cheeses, plus nuts, dried or fresh fruit, something pickled, a spread, something chocolate, and crackers. It's a favorite dinner treat, with no typical takeout worries like if the food will get soggy by the time you get it home. Plus, it's a great way to try cheeses you might not normally pick yourself. During the pandemic I've also taken some of their classes. They've got a fun selection of options like cooking with cheese, or cheese pairings with other food and drinks. Favorite cheese shop and second favorite location! Venissimo has the best selection of cheese and the most knowledgable cheese mongers. They've spoiled me so even though I'm a raving cheese fan I often go in without a single brain cell firing on what I want or how much to get. I can spit vaguely at them for what I'm looking for and like/dislike and they always nail exactly what I'd want. This location is my second favorite because I do not enjoy eating here as much as I do Del Mar. It's a bit dark and cramped because it's a really small space they share with the bottle shop BUT - it has the bottle shop you can purchase from as well! It's good for a medium level stay but if you want something more long and leisurely I'd suggest the Del Mar location instead. read more

Bryan (my husband) had heard about Venissimo long before I knew about them and was way stoked for me getting this birthday gift card. After the gym yesterday we came by to order some sandwiches, there was a bit of a line which gave us some time to check out Bottlecraft. Finally our turn (definitely worth the wait) I ordered the Sweet grilled cheese, made up of brie and fig jam, Bryan ordered the meaty which on a pretzel bread, cheddar mustard and prosciutto, we even grabbed a fig jam for our home. Total was $27, yes it's worth it. When we came home our sandwiches were still so warm, I pulled apart my sandwich and oh my god the brie oozed out. We are NP locals and are finally done with Venissimo! On a sunny afternoon, we often sit outside with a bottle of wine from Bottlecraft (5 stars!) and get a cheese platter from Venissimo. Each time the 3 cheese platter gets smaller and smaller; and the price goes up. However, the staff does a fine job pairing the cheese with the wine. But this time, we've reached our limit. The platter comes with one bag of crackers, there are 4 crackers in a bag. That means I get 2 crackers and 2 crackers for my partner. Every time, we always run out of crackers and gripe about the stupidity of not serving enough crackers. This time, I was brave and asked for more crackers. I simply stated that one bag of crackers was not sufficient for the cheese platter. The young nice lady was deaf to my logic and charged me $2.50 for each bag of crackers (I bought 2 extra bags, 8 crackers, 5 bucks). This is clearly inconceivable and downright greedy. I know it is not the staff's intention to be greedy, and she couldn't care less. It's the owners that annoy me. We will continue to frequent Bottlecraft and sit outside on a nice day. But, there are plenty of other fine restaurants to support (Encontro, Figaro, Street Side, Flora, City Tacos, Fat Boy, Ranchos, Rising Sun, Kin Len, etc.) and enjoy a glass of wine (or beer) from Bottle craft on a beautiful, sunny day in North Park. read more

My wife and I have been coming here for years and have always craved their meat and cheese board. It seems like ever since COVID popped its ugly head into the world the customer service has taken a nose-dive. We usually customize what cheeses and meats we want on the board. That has never been a problem until now. The boards used to come with mustard and jam - make sure you ask for them as well. The biggest complaint would be the fact that they don't give you bread with the board! They serve it with a couple packs of crackers. Very disappointing. Where have you gone and ordered a charcuterie board and did not get bread?! They have baguette and butter on the menu, so you basically have to order that on top of your meat and cheese board. It should really say half a baguette! Defintely not serving a full baguette as implied on the menu. Update your menu to state what you get with what you order. read more

I was going to the Venissimo in downtown but when they moves to Seaport Village I didn't go anymore. So when I found out there was one in North Park I knew I had to check it out. OK so they don't have their own store but at least it's something. They're actually sharing a space with Bottle Craft which is a cool little beer spot. You can try any of the cheeses which is nice and they also keep track of what you buy just in case you can't remember what you got the last. My favorite is Moonlight something well see all they would have to do is look it up and tell me exactly what my favorite is. They have cheese plates, grilled cheese sandwiches and jams. You don't have to buy a whole pound of cheese if you don't want you can just buy a few ounces. The employees are friendly and not that stuck up which you would think they would be. Also you can eat your sandwiches at the little bar at Bottle Craft while enjoying a beer. I think this is a good combination of beer and cheese and I will be back soon. read more

They allow you to taste it all before you buy and this location is located in Bottlecraft in North Park, so try your cheese with a beer on tap if you please. My absolute fav is the truffle cheese. My husband loves their Stilton. The staff is friendly and helpful. It's good to tip them after they've cut you little slices of a bunch of cheeses. What an awesome little shop! I found this shop at a time I couldn't drink or eat certain cheeses and meats so it was a pretty happy sad time for me. This is perfect because they have such a great selection here and sometimes he wants to try a drink but doesn't want to be committed in case he doesn't love it. And they're always willing to take the time to educate you. They also make this sweet grilled panini with Fig Jam that's to die for.
