This paper is getting smaller by the day. Service is also getting bad. Two of the last three days they missed my home delivery. There has been a substantial decline in both the quality of the paper and the content. We cancelled our subscription after 40 years. The keep raising prices with no increase in additional content. Wow! Horrible, horrible, horrible customer service! Signed up for an annual subscription. The number gets routed overseas and you are dealing with a network of nitwits. They gladly took the $344 annual subscription, but haven't delivered ONE paper on time yet! I've rec'd 3 papers at once...over a week late! Then, tried calling and just get the run around from staff (overseas). I've spent more time on the phone and getting nowhere! Then, giving them one more chance to deliver...NOTHING! No paper for a week! More phone calls and being placed on hold for a week...Then BAM! I got 4 newspapers all at once...over 12 days OLD! I'm done, DO NOT get a paper and DO NOT pay them ONE DIME until they deliver product first! :( read more

It's a shame that customers have to be a subscriber to read news online. I was trying to read about the Smart Start safety classes offered to teens by the CHP but apparently have to sign up to do so. The paper is OK, but stay away unless you want to be hounded for the rest of your life. I cancelled my Sunday only subscription because the delivery people would leave the paper at the curb. I called to complain and was told they normally leave it in the driveway, but since I share one with the house next door, they just had to get it onto the property. I asked if they could at least through it onto the walkway close to the steps to the front porch but it never happened. I'm not one for walking out to the street in my robe so I wasn't picking it up until later in the day when I no longer had time to read it. This was especially frustrating as I was used to the LA Times being put at my front door. It's been over a year and I still get notices in the mail and phone calls to subscribe. read more

I've noticed the paper going downhill for a long time. I used to get it 7 days a week, then I switched to Wednesday through Sunday, then to Sunday only. We had been receiving the Star for over 22 years and have witnessed the decline of the paper and its contents. The worse was when USA today took over. Instead of being neutral, it sways to a one-sided viewpoint. The quality has diminished. We finally decided to cancel the subscription. This is the THIRD month I have called to have my cancelation recognized. The first time I was on hold for 25 minutes, the second time, 42 minutes, and today's hold time was ONE HOUR and 11 minutes. During my hold time, I attempted a chat. It was over 40 minutes before anyone responded. Not sure if that's because they finally had the time or that I mentioned the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Fraud. When I tried to reply, my response would not send through. Finally talked to a guy in South Carolina. I was informed that the last person entered the wrong YEAR in my cancelation request and he would take care of it right away and to disregard yet another bill. If I receive another bill from them, I will take further action. If there is a paper in my driveway tomorrow, I will know. In defense of our paper carrier, they have always been stellar in delivery. Over the 22 years they have been our carrier, there were a handful of missed deliveries probably due to illness. We will miss them but not this RAG. I am so happy I never gave them my credit card to charge. I am sure I would be fighting that battle as well. KEEP YOUR CARD IN YOUR WALLET! Do not trust them. What a shame. read more

I placed an advertisement in the classified section on a sunday for a house for rent. They published the ad in a different section called a home section and it ran buried in a book that is homes and realestate for sale primarily. It took me over an hour to find my own ad and I was looking for it! I called today to complain that when I placed a classified ad I expected it to be in the classified section! But they are apparently not interested in a complaint. The nicest person tried to ask a manager, Ryan Brumlic to step into a customer service roll to try to make me happy. But he was not interested. I would not waste your money placing a classified ad in this poor excuse for a newspaper. read more

I signed up with a young man who came to my door one evening selling the Ventura co. Star. I gave 20.00 cash for a three day a week subscription. I have received one paper so far this week.After not receiving a paper on Sat. July 22nd, I called the customer service number only to get a recording stating there was a technical issue with the system. I called the phone number the young man gave me in case there was a problem with getting the paper and I got another recording saying "this is not a working number" I'm beginning to believe I got scammed. read more

As far as daily newspapers, this one is well laid out. Local news is very good, world and national really suck, but that's what you expect from a "hometown" rag. Per most sheets, it lists so far Left it's a joke. If you live in the area, it sure beats the LA Times by a mile at least. read more

I ordered the Star through a Groupon. I paid in full via credit card but kept getting bills from the Star. Everytime I called, I was told, "dont worry, it takes time for the Groupon payment to be recieved". Because the customer service is located out of the US, there is no one that understands or can resolve my issue after calling 3 times. After a few weeks, delivery and online access stopped. Two miserable companies, Ventura County Star and Groupon. I now am having the charge reversed on my credit card. There is no reason for this lack of service; it has soured my past love and respect for the Star. read more

As I read the one star reviews (which I also gave) I noticed many were having trouble with customer service when dealing with cancellation and still being billed. Don't argue with this company or any company because they will drag it out and some just ignore you. Go directly to your bank if it's an electronic withdrawal from your checking account or your credit card company and tell them not to accept payment from a company you're dealing with. It's honestly so sad that we've had a subscription with you guys forever and you guys still miss a delivery. I use to be a long time customer of this newspaper and now I am finding this paper is going down fast. They should be ashamed of themselves. I had a seven day a week delivery up until I get a bill for over $200! I was shocked. I cancelled the paper for a few months and then paid for a three day delivery restart. Well my long time carrier quit because he was treated poorly and a new carrier started and I ended up getting only one paper a week. Customer service is a joke, their main number is for customer service out of state. There is no number to call here in Ventura County. I have had to fight with these people in order to get my paper re-delivered. Oh they don't have customer service on Saturdays. So you will be out of luck getting a paper re-delivered. And the chat service is a joke also! One disconnected with me in the middle of a conversation and another named Kevin just wanted to argue and play stupid games with me. I have had nothing but problems with this paper. Subscribe to it and never received it although Ithey said they would start it. Finally I said just reimburse me and it is been ongoingtrying to get my money back. They put you on hold forever and apologized up-and-down while still trying to sell you the paper. Don't believe the teenagers soliciting subscribers. Today, there was one who told me the subscription is for just for a short time and then stops. The fine print at the bottom of the form says "Service will not stop at the end of initial subscription period. If you wish to discontinue the service you must call 805-437-0000." Also, be aware that it is illegal to solicit door-to-door within Camarillo city limits without carrying a permit. The city asks that you ask all solicitors to show a permit, and call the police if they can't or don't. read more

I used to read the online edition everyday for years. However, they began charging a steep price to read the some of the content. I tried the special discounted price for the first few months, but without that promotional price, it is simply not worth it. Without the subscription it is just a bad experience and even upsetting to visit the site and find that to read the most interesting stories, you need to purchase the subscription, so I just try to not go at all. Or, the LA times or other newspapers will have that information for free. read more

We have been subscribers of both the Ventura County Star and the Wall Street Journal for years. Both papers are delivered together each day. We have recently had a change in delivery drivers and periodically getting the Los Angeles Times delivered rather than the Wall Street Journal. This has happened twice again this week. Calling in to the all automated line we are unable to leave a message so I'm leaving it here. My house is in Ventura a couple blocks north of the Post Office on Wake Forest. The Star is supposed to be a newspaper that reports news on happenings in Ventura county... Ventura County Championship Swim Meet was March 23rd and there was not one picture or write-up about it.... biggest swim meet in the county... all high schools participate. In the past it would take at least 3 pages in the sports section (as it should!). Nobody wants to subscribe to a local paper if it doesn't include local news... what's the point. Unfortuneately you have to click at least one star! BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!! In my opinion this paper is a bunch of Fraudulant Thieves. A salesperson came to the door and made us an offer of three months for $19.34, and that we would not make a payment until after the third month had passed. Well, three days after the paper started our checking account was charged for $22.66 without permission. We called and were told this was the first months payment. We asked what happend to the special offer and then we were told that the $22.66 was the $19.34 with tax added on for the first month. You do the math, the total is well over the current tax rate. We were told buy the sales person that we could cancel anytime before the three months were up and our money would be totaly refunded. We called, we cancelled, still no refund. Have taken the Star for years. All of a sudden a new delivery person couldn't get it right. The paper was delivered while we were on vacation after putting a hold on it and then after vacation, the delivery person didn't deliver our held papers. Even after 3 phone calls, the paper and the delivery person could not get it right. This happened while on 3 vacations! After complaining, nothing changed and they did not seem to care. Stopped the news paper. Now I see it costs to go on-line to read the paper. I will never go back. read more

Less than 1 star should be an option for this company. Do not subject yourself to the drama of signing up with Ventura County Star. They should be ashamed of themselves for how they sell their product. Don't fall for the sweet faced 16 year olds that come to your door and bribe you by convincing you that your helping with their education. This company roped me into 6 months of service paid up front with cash, which wasn't a big deal and I felt good for helping the high school student. Then, I received a renewal bill stating that if I wish to continue service to pay a certain amount, which I did not want. I ignored the bill and figured everything had been canceled, 3 months later I get a notice that $27 has been sent to collections for past due services. No correspondence, no nothing. When i called to clear up the situation they informed me that I would have to pay the amount owed in order to remove it from collections. I asked how this could have happened and she says that the girl who sold me the paper should have informed me. This company and their sales ethics are a joke... they damaged my credit without even a letter or call to let me know. And now I have to pay for something I didn't even want. I will never be a subscriber of this company now or any time in the future given this is how they treat their customers. read more

I signed up for Digital Only access two months ago, and paid for a full year up front. Last week they charged my credit card twice. I called three times trying to get it resolved and finally gave up and disputed the charges with my credit card company. Every time I called I got a different person, with a different answer. The first person told me to dispute the charges with my credit card company because they couldn't find where I was charged. The second person gave me an email address and told me to send the proof that my credit card was charged. (I sent the email - there was no response.) The last person I talked to told me that one of the charges was valid (it was not), and she couldn't even find the other charge. I found the Gannett Newspaper (Fishers Indiana) listed with the BBB - it rates an "F". Gannett Co. owns Ventura County Star, USA Today, and countless other newspapers. They are the largest U.S. newspaper publisher (according to Wikipedia). Based on how they treated me, they certainly deserve their "F" rating! read more

Customer service is a joke! I purchased a 1 year subscription, paid in full in advance (there were several delivery issues during this one year subscription). At the end of the year, I elected to not renew, figuring that since I had paid up front and the subscription had expired, I was done. Well, they had a different idea. I wound up with an "in house collection account" from them for less than $7.00. I called to take care of that, paid it off, figuring I was done. Again, they had a different idea. SOMEHOW, they got the idea that "pay off what I owe you" REALLY meant "restart my subscription"!!!! At NO TIME during the call I made to pay off the small balance did I ever agree to restart my subscription, so I'm not sure how they made this leap. I dislike having to call back and deal with customer service YET AGAIN to get this resolved. I'm now waiting to make sure that they really did cancel this "renewal", and making damned sure that nothing shows up on my credit card statement.
