We came here to see Steel Panther. The venue is quaint and personable. The staff was very friendly. The sound was okay. It got better as the night went on. Free parking lot right across the street. Great little area to walk around before it after a concert. My biggest gripe was if there was air conditioning, they either didn't have it on high enough or it just really is not adequate for a full house. It got so uncomfortably hot inside, my husband and I decided to leave early. They section off a small area near the entrance for smokers. They did rope off an area for disabled, which I appreciated as I really needed to sit. There are two small restrooms on the ground floor for gender neutral or disabled. Additional restrooms were upstairs, but I did not go up there as the stairs were a little much for me that night. I'd be concerned going to this venue in the summer because of inside temperatures but I'm sure it's great in the winter.

OMFG! What a complete disappointment this venue is, especially considering how cool it COULD be. First the positives: The building has fantastic and beautiful architecture, and it's about the only thing that's "majestic" about the venue. White Buffalo was outstanding: super tight, and great songs. His drummer and multi instrumentalist guitarist/bassist/keyboard player were top-notch musicians, so no complaints there. Having said that, I'll never go to see him at that venue ever again. Their solo opener Chris Pierce was also outstanding. What a set of pipes! Unfortunately, the mix the sound people gave him was just a wash and very muddy, but even through the din, you could still hear how talented the guy was. Negatives: Where to start? First of all, on their advertising it says "doors open at 7:00", however, they didn't let the large line in until 7:45, and it was absolutely freezing outside. So basically, we missed dinner and stood in line for half an hour just to freeze our asses off. Next, while waiting in said freezing line, I asked security "do you guys sell food in there?" and they replied "we sell bar food: you know, like hamburgers, hotdogs, and pizza." Fair enough, so when they finally let us in, we got to our seats and we left our jackets there and went back to the concession area. There were no hamburgers, or hotdogs, but they DID advertise a corndog and pepperoni and cheese pizza, so I ordered a corndog and a slice of pepperoni, but the lady taking my order remarked "we only have cheese pizza". OK, I can roll with that because I'm starving. My girlfriend ordered a soft pretzel with cheese sauce. After the lady took our order, which she wrote down on order paper that looked like it was from 1979 and handed it to the "chef?" I saw said chef lady open up the freezer behind her, and then it hit me that our food was all coming out of a freezer and was going to be microwaved, and I thought to myself "uh-oh, that was a big mistake", and sure enough, it was! Imagine the crappiest over-preserved microwave food from the 1970s, and this was it. I mean, they couldn't have made the food worse if they'd tried, and it actually seemed like they were trying! The corn dog, and the pizza we're both soggy and lukewarm, and completely inedible. My girlfriend's pretzel was quite rubbery, and the "cheese sauce" that came with it was disgusting and even worse than microwaved cheese whiz. Needless to say, it all went into the trash, but we were still starving, so I thought to myself "how badly can they screw up popcorn?" So out of sheer desperation and starvation I went back to the concession stand to get some. There were two people ahead of me in the concession line, but the lady working the line suddenly turned her back to everyone and started filling up multiple bags with popcorn as we all stood there, and I kept thinking to myself "OK she's going to turn around and actually help somebody instead of stockpiling bags of popcorn", but that seriously must've gone on for three minutes before she finally turned around. I was thinking perhaps she had taken a big bong hit before work and just forgot why she was there? Anyway, turns out, one CAN screw up popcorn! The oil it was popped in tasted rancid, and even though I only had a few bites of it to figure that out, for the rest of the evening, I was burping up the taste of rancid oil. On with the show: As we were watching Chris Pierce and then White Buffalo, I noticed how drunk everybody on the floor in front of us seemed to be. There was one group in particular that seemed especially sloppy, hostile-edgy, and seemed to be antagonizing each other with shoves and bumps and throwing things at each other, etc. As I looked around the venue, I didn't see any security whatsoever. The only ones I saw were at the front of the venue where you walk in with your tickets. It was pretty obvious that it would be quite easy for a fight to break out in that type of environment, and I could forsee it going on for quite some time before any security would even realize what was going on. That place is an obvious melee waiting to happen. Anyway, maybe someday someone will buy that place and make it a true worthwhile venue and maximize its potential, because it could be a beautiful spot, but until that day, we'll never go back.

Ask the Community - Ventura Theatre

Is it standing room only, or are there seats?

There are seats in the balcony and a few tables with chairs on the main floor.

I heard that professional cameras are not allowed in the venue, but what is considered professional? I don't wanna miss getting a good picture with my fave singer and my phone is not equipped to take a good quality photo. Would my Sony a6100 be ok?

If it's just a point and shoot digital camera, it'll be fine. You just can't take in cameras with detachable lenses. (i.e. Zoom lenses and such)

    Accesible seating? Wheel chair access?

Yes. Entry is easy. Plenty of seating areas for folks in wheelchairs.

This is one of the few times I've gone to a smaller venue especially with such a wide dance floor. For the price, it's totally worth it to go if you can make the trip as you can end up real close to the stage if you want or move around depending on the people present. Otherwise, there's a section of seated tables you can pay more to sit at and enjoy the event in comfort. It was definitely a venue for local artists to perform at, not like the theatre venues in LA. One of the fans actually managed to get the artist to sign their merch after the concert was over!! While, I didn't partake in the alcohol/food vendors there. The staff there were relatively professional about it and prices are generally what you'd expect. There is parking in the back of the venue, but since I had arrived past sundown it was pretty hard to see the entrance on the first go around. Otherwise, I would recommend you park in the residential blocks as it wasn't a tough time walking to the venue. While unclear at the time, the venue security said no outside bottles/drinks before you enter the venue.

Customer service was still great, but I noticed a few changes that took away from the experience for us personally. I do like that the tastings are no longer in the plastic tubes, although the tubes did feel like they held a little more wine. What we didn't enjoy was that when multiple people ordered the same tastings, they were placed into the same shared glass/container. In our party of four, three of us had the same six tastings and had to share. I appreciated the bow on the glass showing the pours, but I preferred the previous setup where everyone had their own individual tastings. It may seem small, and thankfully our group was fine sharing, but it made the experience feel less personal and honestly made us less interested in doing tastings again on future visits. Some people also may not feel comfortable sharing containers or touching the same glass. Nothing terrible at all, just some feedback from longtime visitors who loved how it used to be. On this visit we actually ended up ordering a bottle afterward instead, and moving forward we'll probably just continue doing that rather than the tastings.

On a Thursday night it was pretty dead but we didn't mind, WE ARE the party! The restaurant/ bar is surprisingly spacious which wasn't outright apparent from the outside. Once you walk in there is a nice long bar on the right hand side. A couple of booths and plenty of tables. It was actually a lovely evening (plus our group gets loud & rowdy) so we decided to sit outside on the high top patio table. It was perfect as it could fit the seven of us no problem. Initially i worried how service would be as we were alone on the patio but immediately my concerns went away as we had a fabulous bartender named Jordan helping us out. Despite making the drinks inside and engaging with customers at the bar, he was very attentive to our outside patio group. The drinks were brought out at an impressive pace and we felt valued as customers. Jordan gave great suggestions for shooters for us to try and also was overly accommodating, by allowing us to all pay separate/individual checks per our request. I grow to appreciate that more nowadays because some businesses do give patrons a hard time about splitting tabs. I was grateful despite being a big group he was willing to accommodate us. We only came for drinks, so I can't speak for the food but this spot is a solid bar. They have some interesting cocktails and I liked that they had a couple of shooter/shot options. Good selection of beer and even some wines. I really enjoyed both my Mexican candy shot and the purple heater shot that Jordan recommended for me and a friend. Drinks were cold and they kept flowing. Easy to give this spot 5 stars as the service was good, atmosphere was welcoming, and reasonable prices for being on Main Street. I'd definitely come back and would be happy to try some appetizers next time to see how the food is. My only baby upgrade is that the patio cushions on the chairs need a good wash or to be replaced. Otherwise everything else was clean from the tables, to the bar area, to the restrooms etc. The patio just needs a tiny bit of TLC which a couple of us noted. We had a great experience here though and I'm glad we stumbled upon this spot.

I'm really glad he did because it's the kind of place I probably wouldn't have found on my own. The first thing that caught our attention was the self-serve wine dispensers lined with bottles ready to sample. We had a lot of fun walking back and forth, looking over the different selections, and deciding what to taste next. Being able to sample wines by the ounce before committing to a full glass made the whole experience feel interactive. I especially liked that I could compare different Cabernet Sauvignons side by side, which isn't something you get to do very often. After trying a few different Cabernets, Chimney Rock ended up being my favorite. The dining room added to the experience. The cave-like ceilings, warm lighting, and comfortably spaced tables made it easy to settle in, enjoy our lunch, and catch up without feeling cramped or rushed. If you enjoy trying different wines, it's easy to lose track of time here. We started with a cheese plate, which turned out to be much more generous than I expected. It came with a nice assortment of cheeses, crisp apple slices, grapes, candied walnuts, crostini, and a savory relish on the side. It was a great dish to share with our wine. My friend ordered the tuna poke tower, and we shared the cheese flatbread and sweet potato fries. I went with the Original Cave Salad with salmon, which came with a generous piece of perfectly cooked salmon over fresh greens, apples, grapes, walnuts, and blue cheese. Everything tasted fresh, and the portions were generous enough that we left completely satisfied. One thing I appreciated was that we never felt rushed. Lunch naturally turned into an afternoon of catching up, comparing notes on the different wines, and deciding which pours we wanted to try next. Before we left, we wandered through the wine shop one more time. If you discover a favorite during lunch, you can pick up a bottle before heading home, which is a nice touch. I'm really glad my friend found this place. The next time I'm in Ventura, it'll definitely be on my list again.

The day before, the owner Michele couldn't seem to find the paperwork where we discussed menu, family style, decor, budget etc. Thankfully, we went in the day before to double check everything. Not only were we met with a misogynistic retort to everything we talked about but he did not clarify any details that we later found out would be important. The day of the event, we accidentally hit a bottle of wine bringing in the decorations. Total accident! During the party, we had to constantly find our server (super nice guy but terrible service) to take drink orders, to take food orders, and to clear the table and bring to go boxes. Drinks weren't refilled. We cut and served the cake we brought. Then our bill comes and surprising to us, we were charged a room fee (which I confirmed they DID NOT have prior to booking), charged a cake fee (just for them to store it in their fridge and NEVER told there would be a fee for bringing a dessert, despite Michele asking the day before if we were bringing our own or using them for dessert), and he charged us $50 for the bottle we accidentally broke. With all these extra charges, in addition to already paying a deposit, we were way over the previously discussed budget. I never would have agreed to his idea of everyone ordering individual dishes instead of family style plus his outrageous extra fees had I know it was going to blow the budget. He had every opportunity to tell us there is a cake fee (never have I EVER had to pay a fee to bring a cake- even our server said he felt it was in poor taste to charge us for that). We refused to pay the room fee because we already put down a deposit and were never told there would be these extraneous charges! The terrible ending happened when I slipped and fell (8 months pregnant) in the front of the restaurant RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE OWNER, who stood over me as I was on the ground, and said "you must have slipped on the wine you spilled." Never offered concern, never offered to help me and never apologized. A staff member from the kitchen ran out to help me despite Michel being an arms length from me, looking down on me. Such a disgrace. My dress was dirtied from their floor and I was left with bruises on my knees the next day. No wet floor sign, clearly the floor wasn't cleaned up properly or dried. We will never patronize this restaurant again. What was meant to be a beautiful event turned into a calamity met with a chauvinist owner who lacks customer service and compassion.
