If I could give ZERO stars I would. A friend said to come here for karaoke so I tried it. I'm a fairly friendly person and the bartenders were rude as hell AND overcharged me. When I politely asked for it to be corrected she supposedly made the change but today my account has the original charge. IF you venture here take cash, bring your patience, and a thick skin. For a neighborhood bar, this place is decent. Met up with a friend and her fiancé for a few rounds of margaritas for National Margaritas Day. She invited us to meet here at this dive bar,which is an very interesting spot that has old school video games, darts, pool tables and TVs. When you walk in, there might be a slightly awkward feeling because the local, regulars stare you down because they know you aren't normally from here and you stand out. Once the initial stare down is done they mind there business and carry on with their conversations. Would I go back for second time, probably not. This place is truly a "locals" spot, that's meant for locals (aka people that live nearby) not for personable, outgoing people like me and my friends.... Ventura is an interesting place. When I say interesting, I mean they'll have a little bar in a business park. Now I'm not saying that's not a place where a bar belongs, but it is a little surprising to find a place called Oleary's Sidebar in one of those black cube-looking, oh so modern buildings. Small, space, large bar. I can see the place getting pretty cramped on a good night. They have a pool table and a shuffleboard table where they keep their pucks neatly stowed away in a Crown Royal bag ($0.50 a game). The band that was there that night is semi-regular, and they do a good job of covering the rock classics (extra prop to the lady bassist who sings AND rocks out with her wireless pickup!). It's a shame that the bartenders in the back didn't have the better sense to make a Colaweizen (1/3-1/4 pint glass filled with cola, top with hefenweizen) by pouring the cola first, THEN the beer, which caused problems aplenty. Oh well. You can't win 'em all. Either way, a bar is a bar and you can get your drink on here just fine. read more

This was the scene of the crime. Where the Grey Goose bit me. They pour a STRONG drink here. I take responsibility for my actions and poor decisions. I went from being buzzed to being another person in a few minutes (almost). I was apparently petting my friend's hair like a cat. (Well, she does have nice hair). When I got home (my sober husband drove) I went from the ultimate dog mama to leaving my dog and my jeans outside in the rain. (After sitting in a water filled chair outside.) From the moment I started coming to this bar I have always felt welcomed and respected, the regulars have always been amazing and so has the staff. The manager makes sure her girls are aware of the people coming in to the bar so they can be helped as soon as possible. O'Learys is my favorite bar in town, and I'll tell you why. There's a constantly friendly atmosphere there that's unmatched anywhere else I've been. Drink prices are reasonable and during the week you get a very mixed crowd. I've been here dozens of times and never seen anybody get out of control. I've never seen this place have a bouncer on staff, and as far as I can tell it's because they really don't need one. During the week, this is where I go with friends to chat and just hang out. Reading time: 1 minute I recently moved right next door to this bar. In addition, my work actually shares a parking lot with the bar as well. So I could walk to work, stop by for a drink after work and walk home after, perfect set up right? Wrong! Since I moved here from Hollywood, let's play the scene out on the screen. Fade in. Exterior. A black couple pulls into a parking spot in front of a bar. Pan to bar sign, it reads Oleary's. A couple of old men standing outside smoking. They all stare at the couple as they exit the car. Fade in. Interior. Setting: Smoky dive bar. Jukebox playing an inaudible country tune. The place is empty except for 3 old men sitting at the bar having an excited discussion about something. The couple walks in. Bar goes silent. All occupants stare, one sneers and looks down at his drink, obviously irritated by something. The other two patron's gaze follows the couple to their sits. The couple orders drinks from a friendly bartender and sip nervously, looking around and noticing looks from occupants including the ones that were smoking outside. One old man, maybe an owner given the acknowledgment from all patrons, stares at the couple incessantly. He changes his sitting direction to face the couple and stares unabashedly. the Couple chugs their drinks, pays, and leaves. Close scene. No "thank you for coming" as we leave. No "have a good day". Just glares ushering us out. I read a review above that claimed this place was racist because patrons complained about Spanish music, that is accurate. I really wanted to like this place. To have a dive bar within walking distance to my abode would have been ideal. But I feel I am not welcome here. I have lived in small towns in the Midwest and been to small-town dives where I was the only black patron in years, but this was unnerving. The fact that this yelp listing is unclaimed, shows the disinterest of the owners in their customer's experience. Go elsewhere unless you are a (white) local. read more

Pros, Cons, then summary. PROs--It's a bit of a dive bar...which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It has an older crowd vibe to it, and mostly white folk, but that isn't always bad. Nice place to pop in every now and then, as opposed to the trendy type of bars downtown. Here, you can just hang and don't need to worry about dress codes. The juke box is nice and connected to the internet, so you can play almost any song ever released. The bartenders are generally nice, and the bouncer does his job. Free popcorn! LOL, hey, food is food when your really drunk. CONs--Once in awhile you get the younger crowed, which isn't always bad, but can be knuckleheads.The shuffleboard is busted, or at least the scorekeeping part. It's been broken for a couple years now, so it looks as if they can't find parts for it or don't care. It could use a TV on the wall across from the bar too. Would I go back? This place was annoyingly difficult to find for us using waze the first go around. It is somewhere in or around the Kaiser health center in a spot you would not expect a bar to be. It is too bad they are so hidden as it is a really cute and fun place and would get more business I am sure, if people could spot it from the road. They had a nice selection of beer on tap and no food, but munchies you could purchase. They had something like Touch Tunes but a different system (Jukebox) that you could play and people were playing some good music. They had pool tables and the bar was nice and long. We enjoyed a couple of beers here on a lazy Saturday afternoon. We would definitely return if in the area. read more
