Family-style eateries usually mean a variety of filling comfort foods, breakfast items, griddle cooked meats, deli sandwiches, and home made desserts. Or, in other words, something for everyone. Carlock is no different there. The difference is the quality. Between Peoria and Bloomington/Normal in rural Illinois, Carlock doesn't have to be as good as it is. There are not a lot of other options nearby. In these parts anyone looking for a quick, inexpensive meal might be satisfied with lesser quality. I had the lunch Reuben, which--rather than thinly sliced corned beef--had generous slabs of meat. It was perfect, with the melted Swiss cheese offering creaminess to the meat's saltiness. Not overloaded with sauerkraut, either, to pad the sandwich. Sandwiches come with soup and a thick slice of Italian bread. The potato bacon soup was freshly made and a small but hearty meal by itself. read more

Just yards away from interstate 74, I did not expect this restaurant to be as good as it is. The establishment was clean and the staff friendly. More importantly, the service was quick, the prices economical. Finally, the food was excellent! Breakfast is served all day, while the lunch and dinner menu are diverse. I had the two-egg breakfast while my wife had a hot turkey sandwich served with a fresh salad and freshly baked bread. The turkey was tender and juicy, the mashed potatoes and gravy from scratch (with parsley). I would highly recommend this place to anyone traveling near Bloomington, Illinois. read more

I want to like this greasy spoon. The staff is nice and the servings will fill you for sure. The fries had a nice crispy cook and my French onion soup was tastey with decent amount of cheese. I know some people want a burger to be a little pink but for the kids cheeseburger I had to wonder. My fish were square...like three equal sized fish squares. Thoroughly cooked but the tartar sauce was barely different than mayonnaise. This is a friendly stop over for basic diner food that serves you decent portion sizes. New to area and glad to have this gem close by. Have only had breakfast which was served quickly and hot. The coffee is perfect. I do not like fancy coffee and this hits the spot but comes in small cups. No worries as service is excellent and they quickly refill but I feel like a nuisance. Pancakes, omelet, scrambled eggs, sausage, ham, biscuits and gravy --all very good. Bacon was a bit on cheaper side with large fatty strip but I know some people prefer that. I've been going to this family restaurant for years. Great family that runs it! Nice staff - local people. The food is plentiful and filling. I particularly enjoy the fish they serve on Friday's. Today (Saturday) I ordered a mushroom omelette. Very good - but I wish I had ordered it without cheese. They do a very good job with their soups and the Turkey Salad is surprisingly flavorful. What bumped off stars from my review? Steak was ordered medium rare but came medium well. It is a thin steak so I get that it's hard to cook right. The coffee was meh. Wow oh wow, i stopped in for lunch and had one of the specials on the board. It was ham with homemade scalloped potatoes and soup or salad. I got the broccoli soup which was creamy and flavorful and it come with a piece of fresh bread. The ham was the best ham i have ever eaten. Not too salty and when you have ham thats that juicy and you can cut with even a spoon, thats when you will say thats the best ham i have ever eaten! We stopped here for lunch and the food was fantastic. It's an old fashioned home style diner. Not all the booths were in the best repair but the restaurant and restrooms were very clean. The patty melt was out of this world! Tasty and hot with great beef. My daughter got pigs in a blanket and it was delicious and enormous. She ate half of the three huge pancakes. My husband got the pork tenderloin and it was also delicious and huge. We didn't get any desserts but they had several different kinds of pies and I would definitely save room for a piece next time I am there. The service was fast and friendly. read more

Another great recommendation Yelp community! Thank you! Nothing flashy but a friendly diner with a massive menu of options at very reasonable prices. We got their delicious chicken fried steak (house special) which came with average green beans and yummy mashed potatoes smothered in gravy, also soup or salad and I did salad, which was fine, as you'd expect from a dinner. I also got the tasty raspberry iced tea. After the salad I only finished about half the delicious steak and a few bites of potatoes. My 9-month-old went after the potatoes for quite a while with full enthusiasm but there were still plenty left. My daughter had the Mickey pancake from the children's menu (see picture) and ate only about a third of it after finishing the peaches, pear and strawberries that made the face. She loved it. My husband ate about half of his huge 3-egg omelet with ham and bacon and barely got to his massive mound of hash browns as he'd ordered a short stack of 2 more pancakes and got through only one of those as well. All was very good, just so plentiful we were all stuffed! Even with all that great food, the bill came out to $32. Our server and the local patrons were all friendly. The place is run down with rips in the seats of almost every booth, but it is otherwise clean and perfectly cozy on a cool, rainy November day. Stopped in at 8:30 on Friday evening and was not prepared for anything more than your typical roadside fare but..... the fried mushrooms were fantastic, my taco salad was delish (they didn't skimp on the good stuff, it wasn't mostly lettuce like a lot of places, the shell was so yummy) and the kids' french fries were probably the BEST fries I have ever encountered. We wound up being there about 10 minutes past closing time (9pm) despite trying to hurry a bit and they didn't get impatient with us so that was nice read more

Carlock Family Restaurant is the best breakfast place on the west side of Bloomington. It might be a bit of a drive, but we make it at least once a week. The food is fantastic and the service is extremely friendly. If you go there once a week, they will get to know you. The breakfast skillets and croissant sandwiches are excellent. The Mexican skillet is particularly good, particularly with hot sauce. There is a large variety of both breakfast and dinner foods and I have yet to find anything I did not like. Give it a shot. Just don't take my seat on sundays. ;-) read more

This diner was a great little surprise! I've driven by here several times while driving from Bloomington to Peoria. We were in the mood to try something new today and gave this place a shot. I'm glad we did. I had the BBQ beef sandwich with French onion soup. It was delicious. The menu was huge and very affordable. Restaurant is clean and service was friendly.
