We were in town for the holidays, and knowing there wouldn't be much open on Christmas Day, we started the search for places we could get reservations. We found Verbena would be open and set up our reservations for brunch after reviewing several options. So glad we did! Everything was great from start to finish! We brought our pup along and were seated on the patio. It was comfortable, open, and airy. Our server was super sweet and helpful with questions. She checked on us just enough without being overbearing and made sure our coffee was always warm. Coffee was hot and strong with great flavor, served with real cream. The food was really good. We had the Verbena Benedict: English muffin, buttered lobster, poached eggs, and lemon hollandaise; the Calabaza Cinnamon Roll: pumpkin, cream cheese glaze, and piloncillo syrup; and the Lox plate. I would say the cinnamon roll is for sure something to split as it's super rich and decadent. And the potato pavé was amazing! The ambiance was actually super fun, like, surprisingly fun for a Monday night where the energy level was somewhere between "library" and "waiting room." I haven't been here on a weekend when it apparently turns into 6th Street Chaos Olympics, but based on the view, I can imagine it gets wild enough to require goggles. I started my night with some Añejo tequila... or so I thought. The bartender immediately informed me that I had just consumed the very last drops. Amazing timing on my part, tragic timing for my soul. No worries, I switched to reposado and made it work like the resilient tequila warrior I am. Feeling confident, I ordered the Carnitas because, honestly, when has pulled pork ever let anyone down? WELL. ALLOW ME TO PRESENT EXHIBIT A: THIS MEAL. When the dish arrived, it looked like someone panicked, grabbed a handful of ingredients, and yeeted them into a pile of black beans. It had the aesthetic of a child building a sandcastle... but with food. I took a bite and immediately realized the flavor had taken the night off. The beans were flavorless. The pork was crunchy, like, aggressively crunchy, almost as if someone deep-fried it out of spite. Also flavorless. I asked for hot sauce and tortillas to try and perform emergency flavor CPR. Spoiler: the tortillas had more personality than the entire entrée. And listen, it takes A LOT for me not to eat something, but this dish defeated me. I surrendered. White flag up. As for the service... meh. I had to track down the bartender multiple times, which is impressive considering there were only three other people in the entire bar. I've had better attention trying to flag down a raccoon in my yard. Overall? Disappointing. This is a restaurant and bar located in down town Austin occupying the ground level of the Canopy by Hilton hotel. prices are pretty steep but the restaurant is cute with excellent service. not as many vegatarian items as I had hoped for. I got the veggie quesadilla - however it came covered in a cream sauce that was pretty flavorless taking away the flavor I remember & how I had tried them previously as they were dry and crispy with no sauce. My friend got the chicken mole, which she stated was good, chicken was cooked great but not worth the 35$ price point in her opinion. my significant other opted for the blueberry and goat cheese flatbread which was interesting but no complaints . Very cute spot - the ambiance is chic but not bougie which is nice. Our wait staff was incredibly friendly and checked in with us consistently. Oh, and fair warning the mimosa carafe is large!! Dawn was our server and she was phenomenal! From start to finish, this was a phenomenal dining experience! We came here for our anniversary dinner and were greatly surprised! We began with two drinks called the Spritz and Giggles followed by appetizers! We got the quesadilla, blueberry goat cheese flat bread with prosciutto and the Birria dumplings. The server made sure we were pleased with our selections and even suggested a vodka shot for us. We decided to go with a sweeter shot and got a cosmopolitan shot which was great! This place is average at best, nothing special. We had to wait for quite some time until a host showed up to the host stand to greet us. The food is okay, lacks depth and true flavor. There's not one bite we had that we were throughly impressed by. I've had better items from the frozen aisle of Trader Joe's. Food was also semi warm instead of hot. The service is really great and the ambiance is really nice though. Further details on food items ordered: Dumplings: the sauce was supposed to be the star of the show but was just meh, okay. It was warm at best and lacked true flavor. The Birria inside the dumplings was good. Carnitas flatbread: the bread tasted nice, one of the only things that tasted fresh. The red onions completely overpowered the dish though. Concept is good, execution could be much, much better. The pulpo was my favorite thing although it could have been better in flavor. Still just okay. Another huge disappointment was in the cocktails department. I asked if they could sub one of their cocktail vodka drinks with gin and they said no, which is absurd. I asked if they couldn't sub the spirit, if they could create something similar and they would not. Lacks creative thinking skills in this department, it's truly not that hard to sub or create something similar with a very similar spirit. Very disappointing. Came here with a group of 6 for a birthday dinner and it beat all expectations. We all smiled at each other with every bite and were constantly passing plates so everyone could try what the other ordered. For appetizers - my boyfriend and I ordered the Pulpo Enamorado and Birria Dumplings. 1. I don't typically like Octopus because it can be chewy, but the chefs certainly know what they're doing here. The char on the octopus was a little bitter, but the combination of the green sauce and fresh salad made for an impactful bite. 2. I was curious to see how a Birria taco could be a dumpling and wow - so inventive and yummy! Would definitely recommend these two. 3. My friends ordered the Lil Gem Salad, Roasted Maple Carrots and the Burrata Macha. They said the "lil gem salad was a great portion," they "wish they had restaurants in PA that served the Burrata Macha." For entrees: 1. I have a gluten allergy (typically have minor gastro reactions) but I ordered the crab pasta and was fine. I'm willing to bet that the pasta was handmade and that's why I didn't have a reaction after eating it. The sauce was creamy, the crab was abundant and juicy, and the pops of lemon really tied everything together. 2. My boyfriend ordered the Barbacoa (lamb shank) and it honestly didn't need the knife that was given to us. It was fall-off-the-bone tender and cooked to perfection. He even smiled after the first bite. 3. My friends ordered the Chile Relleno, Crab Pasta and Salmon. "The salmon was the best I've ever had" - they even spoke about it the following day at brunch because they enjoyed it so much. The pink sauce with the Chile Relleno was delicious and my friend who also ordered the crab pasta was appreciative of the amount of crab in the dish. Lastly, with it being a birthday celebration, our waiter brought complimentary ice cream for our birthday girl with a candle on the scoop. Really nice touch! Verbena is a cute and stylish spot in Austin with great vibes, friendly service, and surprisingly affordable prices. We stopped by for lunch and had a really enjoyable experience. We ordered the truffle fries, salmon cake, and the Buffalo Truffled Chicken Sandwich (wasn't a huge fan but you'd like it if you like buffalo sauce), all flavorful and well-prepared. We got there at 5:30 and there was no one we were assured it was going to be poppin' in half hour. This place is attached to Hiltons Canopy Hotel. The menu looked fabulous, and we opted for the HH options. Flatbread were SO good! The gem salad was really well put together but lacked acid. I requested a viniagrette if they had one- they did, and it did the trick. Drinks were tasty and wine list was small but good choices. Wow wow wow. Okay first off, I worked at a fine dining restaurant for over 3 years and for anyone else that's ever done that, they know that this will completely ruin you for eating out. You see everything that's out of place, not presented well, service that's off etc etc. But let me tell you, from the moment we walked into the dining room to the moment we left, our experience was truly superb. When I saw it was the restaurant that serves the hotel there, that always makes me a bit skeptical (I don't usually have high hopes for hotel restaurants), but this is actually an individual restaurant entity that also happens to serve the hotel. Lead by Executive Chef Paolo Gama, who we got to have a lovely chat with after our meal, this gem has everything: beautiful atmosphere that flows right into the open concept kitchen, exceptional staff that are warm and somehow reset your tablescape without you noticing, and food that only got better with each bite - from the first taste of salad (that I'm somehow still dreaming of) to the final bite of the lastest batch of homemade horchata ice cream - truly it was a dreamy experience I'm excited to go back to enjoy again. So, don't be fooled by it's location and scale - this restaurant and its wonderful people (thanks again Paolo and our lovely server, Nick, for your perfect service and delightful cappuccino) make you unsure how this isn't on the Michelin recommended list! This place came recommended so my group of 4 decided to try it on a Friday night. Indoor seating wasn't available so we sat outside in the courtyard next to some cozy heating lamps. It must've been an off night as a server didn't come by for at least 20 mins, not even to bring any water. We ordered a few different dishes, but sadly they all missed the mark. The pulpo had a predominantly burnt flavor, though it was dressed up in a citrusy green sauce and flower petals for color. The aguachile was citrusy, but lacked any salt to counterbalance it. The carnitas were too salty to eat and the barbacoa had no flavor despite having consomme and a side sauce. As we sat with drinks in our hands at a patio bar on West 6th Street, conversation on where to eat within walking distance fluttered in the air. My cousin visiting from Dallas happened upon this place in his search and next thing I know BAM - here I am sitting at fine dining at it's finest on West 6th. The place was swank, the waiter was excellent, the food...insert emoji of an Italian chef kissing their fingers - "Al bacio!" This place takes ingredients to the next level. Not only do they have quality ingredients for a base, but then added even more layers. There is definitely an art to take something simple that would be good on it's own and add ingredients and still hit that perfect umami without being too umami. read more

I love a good happy hour, and Verbena's was advertised at the entrance of the hotel. Since we were staying at the Canopy we decided to stop in one afternoon for a drink and some oysters. We were seated at the bar right away and the bartenders were great. We got a dirty martini for only $10 as well as a glass of house chardonnay for $7 - pretty great prices even for happy hour! They had some delicious sounding options for happy hour bites, including a burger with fries for only $12. We went with half a dozen oysters for $12 - they were delicious but a bit small - I'd definitely get a dozen next time. The bar is bright and airy with lots of large windows, and the seats at the bar were comfortable. We finished with the scrumptious $13 Chocolate Entremet topped with raspberries and a dash of dark chocolate The only unexpected issue we noticed was that the soft tortillas were a little stiff, somewhere between a taco shell and a tortilla. And perhaps that's intentionally how they're prepared. Environment here is clean, cool, and classy. And I can't stop the accolades for our waitress who was truly accommodating in every possible way. 5 and 1/2 stars rounded down to five because that's all Yelp will let me do. Brunch was needed on a very nice Saturday afternoon and Verbena wound up being our destination around 1pm. Very nice looking place as I believe it is part of a Hilton hotel. I loved the bar area and the kitchen space. We got a table by the windows as it made for a nice backdrop. Analicia was our server and she was very lovely and always nearby when we needed her. Menu looked good and the Chicken Mole Hash caught my eye immediately. The dish included breakfast potatoes, shredded chicken, mole, poached egg, green onions, radish and queso cotija. This dish was very good and I took all of it down when I didn't think I would lol. I washed it all down with a Life on Mars cocktail and later a glass of rose gold rose'. Good spot to hit up for brunch as it was not hard to get a reservation 2 hours prior. If your brunch runs too long, you are able to sit at the bar while they close down and prep for the dinner crowd. I came here on a winter Thursday morning with my office team for an offsite holiday breakfast. It was in the 30s outside and what I loved most about this entire experience were the subtle details that made this a really sweet place to visit. As soon as you walk in it was warm. Considering all the windows everywhere, it was very comfortable temp. The holiday decorations were beautiful and the aesthetic overall was warm and open. The table settings were lovely with marble table tops and lived in textiles for your lap napkins. The bathroom was also impressive with full length backlit mirrors, warm water at the faucet and free feminine products with full length doors for privacy at the stall. While I do want to give major props for the food and how gorgeous it presented, it was good but not great for me. I am a lox fan to the core baby! But my deconstructed version was too boogie for me. The flavor was there but I wasn't thrilled by how much effort I needed to create the perfect bite and it was definitely a lighter dish. I thought the churro pancakes looked gorgeous but were a little dense for me which made them feel dryer to me and there was a slight sourness from the pumpkin cinnamon roll that while it added some complexity, spoiled my expectations of a better than Cinnabon dupe I thought it was going to be. If I'm being honest, I'd come back and try a different time of day and menu because the ambiance and service were really great. read more

These plates were unbelievable. First off, the restaurant and kitchen are all open as one, so you can see and smell everything going on. Very intimate and open. The steak tartare was next level. It was served with pickled mustard seeds, "yolk puddin' shallot", cornichons, and capers with toasted 'easy tiger sourdough'. It was the best tartare I have ever had and I would go back in a heartbeat to have more of it. I do wish there was more bread, that ratio was a little off but it was so tasty you could just eat the tartare with a spoon. The next thing we ordered was the prosciutto flatbread. This stuck out to me immediately because the sauce was tzatziki! I thought it was bold so I had to try it. It also had confit tomatoes, toasted seeds, and chili aioli. I felt like it was a weird pairing but I ended up having a 'ratatouille-like' experience in my brain with each bite I took. Dined at Verbena for dinner. The restaurant is located in downtown Austin and the decor is really beautiful. Open kitchen, white subway tiles, illuminated displayed bottles of wine. My family and I shared a few delicious apps: hummus, pita, and Moroccan meatballs. I ordered the Grandpa's Lemonade to sip. I love whiskey and I love ginger so the two paired nicely in this cocktail. My dinner did not disappoint. I had the Westfold Farms chicken which was cooked perfectly crispy on the outside and fall-off-the-bone tender on the inside. Equally delicious and enjoyable was the bed of rice pilaf it was served on and the dried apricots mixed in adding a unique sweetness to go alongside the savory chicken. My boyfriend and I split a cheesecake which was incredibly decadent. Our family was not so lucky with their dessert. Avoid the baklava they said! Sad to see this formerly great restaurant end up like this. Maybe 3 other tables in use at 7:30 on a Friday, and the food gives a clue as to why. On the positive side, the Rosemary's Baby Daddy cocktail was an excellent and original take on the mezcal cocktails you now see everywhere in town. And the pork-infused bean dip was delicious. Beyond that, the dos moles chicken was decent; the scallops not nearly interesting enough for a $45 entree; the glazed carrots a jumbled, overcooked, oddly flavored mess; and the prosciutto flatbread drowning in tzatziki sauce a bad idea that never should have made it past the chef's first tasting. Even the spiced chocolate cake ruined its good flavor with a texture as dry as particle board. The change in exec chefs and hard turn to a Mexican menu certainly looks like a major mistake based on our previous visits compared to this most recent experience. Austin has way too many excellent options at this higher price point for this to survive in its current form. Hope the hotel will find a restaurant worthy of this gorgeous space. read more

I got the crispy chicken which was absolutely amazing, like fall off the bone amazing! I typically stay away from ordering chicken at restaurants, but next time i'm back, I will definitely be ordering it again! Also got the roasted carrots which were great! This place is tucked in between the bars on west 6th so it's a prime location if you're looking to get a drink after dinner, or they also have a nice bar with bar seating, tables, and even couches! Overall, the restaurant is pleasant. Great atmosphere, good service and the prices are reasonable but I can't just can't help but find this place overrated. For instance, we ordered the avocado flatbread with arugula and unfortunately the dish just didn't "work". It lacked dimension, perhaps it needed chili or something but it was really bland. They did offer a vegetarian pasta that wasn't on the menu but other than that and the flatbread, there aren't really many great vegetarian options apart from salads and sides. Although I will say the Greek Salad was decent [4/5]. The wine list is decent as well, no french champagnes so speak of by the glass however which would have been a nice touch I probably wouldn't go back but we had a vegetarian meal so it might be one of those places that best for carnivores! read more
