Updated review: it has only been 3 days since my manicure with Boune. it is, hands down, one of the worst manicures i've ever had. you can see where the second layer of polish was added over the first. i could have done my own nails more efficiently at home. very disappointed that i paid such an exorbitant amount of money for such a poorly done manicure. my toes, however, still look awesome, so there's the silver lining of my experience. The services were great, but my complaint is with the lack of communication. I had a massage, pedicure, and facial scheduled. The pedicure and facial were wonderful! The massage, itself, was great. However, I was offered two different massage oils. I was never told that one was an "add on" that would cost $25 more. Of course she talked me into that one. It was CBD oil which I know very little about. I'm a nursing mom and told her that was ok to use ONLY if it is safe with breast feeding. She said it definitely is! It wasn't until after I left that I realized I was charged an extra $25 for the oil and to make matters worse... the FDA absolutely does not recommend this product be used with breastfeeding moms. I was so upset when I read this! Now I'm sure this one use isn't going to totally ruin my child....but that's not the point. I asked about it... and they should have known not to use it. I left what should have been an extremely relaxing experience upset. I, unknowingly, paid more than I had planned and used an oil that was potentially unsafe for my nursing baby. I called to let them know I was upset and they did say they would refund the $25, but what a disappointment. I spent a decent amount of money to relieve some stress....and it ended up adding stress to my evening. read more

It was my girlfriend's birthday so I took her to verbena day spa for a pedicure massage. She told me she loved it there and the service was great and that she loved the atmosphere as well. Great place to get multiple treatments with an Aveda products. The staff were very friendly, professional, and on time. I started with a facial by Makika. AWESOME! I'd give her 5 stars just for the facial and neck massage. It was the best facial I've ever had (and I've had plenty!). Another bonus is that I didn't have to change rooms after the facility to get my massage - the staff changed rooms! I wish I could say the same about my massage. I don't know the gals name, but she gave me a chakra balancing treatment (instead of my girlfriend who ordered it). She didn't ask for feedback or pay attention to my intake form that said "neck and shoulders" in big highlighted print. She never touched my shoulders or neck. or my legs and arms that were sore after a new exercise regimen. There was no massage but some painful strokes down my back on muscles that weren't warmed up. Re the chakra treatment - I did not feel any energetic connection (I am certified in Asian body work and have been practicing that and massage for 15 years). I felt that she was new and a bit unsure. I suggest that she read the intake form and that she discussed a strategy at the beginning and asks for feedback throughout any future treatments. Each session should not be rote..rather tailored to what the customer needs. In summary, I was so disappointed that I spent the money and time that they charge for the massage. I believe that when you go to a facility like that with top level fees, you should get an experienced therapist. read more

This is a hidden gem in Frederick! Paid a visit to Junia for a full set of lashes, and before we got started, she took the time to ask questions to be sure she knew exactly what I wanted. Phyllis was amazing. I never had a massage before but she made me feel comfortable and relaxed. Afterwards I felt wonderful, all the kinks in my neck were gone and I felt anew. The smells from the oils were very nice. The atmosphere at the spa was serene and relaxing. I was offered tea or water. Definitely go for the tea, it's delicious. I hope to go back sooner than later! A Facial and mud wrap with massage------ahhhhhh, who couldn't enjoy such a lovely agenda of relaxation. This spa has been a favorite spot for me for several years. I can't recall a service I was not 100% satisfied. The ear candling is especially awesome. Rooms are well appointed and aroma just enough -- not perfumy- if that's a word. Parking best option is the court street garage although they do have a few spots in a private lot off Market Street. I would also recommend giving plenty of time to arrange for services but I've been lucky and slipped in same day. read more

Had a Brazilian, half leg, and eyebrow wax done at Verbena yesterday. It was my first time ever getting either a leg or a Brazilian wax. I was nervous, but Makiko was incredibly kind and informative. She let me know what my expectations should be, asked plenty of questions to gauge my comfort level, and explained everything before and as she did it. They used a hard wax for the Brazilian and a soft wax for my legs. What I liked was that Makiko didn't lie about how much the Brazilian would hurt the first time around. She would often ask if I was doing all right and paused to wait for me to feel comfortable again before proceeding to the next area. Never did I feel uncomfortable because of her; she was professional and always listened to what I had to say. She was very thorough and I was impressed with the results. Makiko made the process a lot less intimidating than I thought it would be. The staff here is friendly and helpful. I will be definitely be coming back again. read more

I have been going to Verbena Salon & Spa for sometime. Their new location on 7th Street in Frederick, MD is amazing! The building has an industrial vibe-hip, cool, modern-with ample off street parking. Inside, I found the space to be modern, relaxing, with impeccable customer service at the reception desk. I was ushered into a tranquil space complete with chaise lounge, soft lighting, meditative music and the sound of running water. Also available, cucumber infused water, and a selection of teas. I felt enveloped by comfort and luxury. My aesthetician was Miriam. She is a ROCK STAR. Her depth of knowledge regarding skin care comes from her many, many years at Elizabeth Arden, Red Door Spa. Her expertise brings a whole other level to skin care. The fact, too, that she is a wonderful person with a great personality is an added bonus. I look forward to trying their other services-couples message, body treatment, nail services, etc. in the near future. read more

This is my second massage at Verbena and I will say that both times my massage has been excellent. The issue lies in communication with the front desk and manager. When I got a gift card for my mom for a Christmas present I specifically calculated enough to include a generous tip, too. When I scheduled the appointments, the person I spoke with at first thought I wanted back-to-back appointments and after going back and forth finally understood that two appointments at the same time. When my mom and I showed up, it turns out she had scheduled us for a couples' massage (as in, in the same room) and then when my mom went to pay after her massage, she was told it was salon policy not to accept tip on gift cards. She had no cards for the manager, I left my name and number with the front desk and called twice this past week, without any response. Unprofessional! read more

She takes her time through every step and I really noticed a difference in my skin after one time. A more even complexion , zero blackheads and no scarring after the extractions she did. I had a beautiful eyelash extension with Chloe! She's wonderful, is very gentle and precise in putting in the extensions, and I love they way they look! Their Massages are great. But today I went in to try their nail salon. The room was really dirty and not kept up. The instruments seemed clean and/or new but the floor was dirty and the whole room was in really poor shape. When you think of a spa experience you think of a nice relaxing space. This was a dirty, distracting eyesore. The technician who did my nails (Boun) was very nice, but that didn't make up for the space. I will be back for massages but I will not be back to the nail "spa." read more

This is a very relaxing place. I've only ever gotten waxing done here but I would go here for other services such as massage and facials. I find that it's a little pricey but it's worth it. I received a gift certificate for the waxes but I did the math for the package and it came out to a very reasonable if not inexpensive price for each wax. I recently had an essential manicure by Junia at Verbena Spa. As lovely as the spa is I found the front desk staff not very warm and friendly. Yes, they did all they were suppose to do, but it felt more as if they were going through the motions. As far as my manicure I was quite disappointed not only in the service but also of Junia. To start with,she thought I was there for a pedicure opposed to a manicure, the massage part of the manicure lasted maybe one minute and where most manicurist make sure all the lotion is rubbed into your skin, she left alot of it sitting on my skin and she might have said five sentences to me from the time she escorted me to the manicure area until the time she escorted me back. I am not one who likes to have a lot of conversation during a manicure, but being friendly and thanking a new client would seem to be appropriate. I tried Verbena Spa as I wanted to see how the service compared to Renassiance Spa as I wanted to give me daughter a spa gift certificate for her upcoming birthday. I will stay with Renassiance, there is not comparison with regard to customer service. I realy wanted to like Verbena Spa but walked away quite dissappointed. read more

I'm new to the Frederick area and was looking for a good prenatal massage therapist. After reading so many positive reviews on Jodi, I decided to give her a try. Let me just start off by saying that I'm a relatively easy to please person and this is my 3rd pregnancy so I've had several prenatal massages before to use as a basis for comparison. She started off by telling me that I'm big for my gestation. Every pregnant woman wants to hear how big she is, right? Well it gets better. She has you fill out a form and on this form, there is a picture of a body and you're instructed to circle exactly where you want her to concentrate most on. So, I circled the back and then additionally wrote that from my neck to my lower back is really bothering me. She led me down a hallway to my massage room and again, I reminded her of my back. The table was set up horribly for a pregnant woman's curves, typically, there is a pillow placed between your legs to keep your hips, knees, and ankles aligned while relieving pressure off the lower back and then another pillow placed under the belly. Well, she had no pillows other than the one under your head, which is fine for a body that isn't carrying a child. She informed me that lying on my side was bad during pregnancy so that I would primarily be lying on my back. After 3 pregnancies, I think its safe to say thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Then starts the massage. She did several "filler" things to use up her hour, such as massaging each individual toe..twice, and rubbing different scented oils on my face several times. She even had the nerve to massage my belly, I have NEVER had a masseuse touch my pregnant belly before but since I had two healthy babies previously and I am not high risk, I just let it go. She also firmly used pressure points in my ankles and heels which I was shocked by since that's known to induce labor and I am only 28 weeks. She also rested her hands under by body several times, I'm not sure what the point of that was since she wasn't actually massaging me. Maybe her hands needed a break. She placed a damp hot towel under my neck and that was the only action my back side got. After an hour of rubbing my face and basically tickling my feet, she was finished and never even touched my back (which is why I came in!) or the backs of my legs or arms. I'm not even sure what I paid $115 for, this woman doesn't seem to have a clue how to alleviate the pain and stress that a woman's body experiences during pregnancy. Save your time and money and find someone who knows what they're doing. read more

Because of all of the glowing reviews, I gave this place a try. The front desk woman was so unfriendly, and no help at all. Then someone awkwardly grabbed me and had me walk with them through a hall to another room. No one explained to me what was going on, just expected me to know. It was awkward. Then the nail tech just continuously talked about how good she is, and how people always come back for her... And let me tell you, she wasn't that great. Very basic. The shellac was too deep into the beds of my nails - where it gets thick and ugly. Then, I finally got my eyebrows done. And that woman was actually great. She is the only reason I gave a few stars. I am extremely disappointed with my visit. I don't see how this place has so many good ratings. :-( read more

I read good reviews online about this place and, since I like supporting local businesses, I thought I'd get my manicure & pedicure done here before having my engagement pictures done. Sort of audition them for the bridal party for the actual wedding. This was possibly the worst experience I've ever had. First I wasn't seen until 35 minutes after my appointment was supposed to be for, and was told over and over again that they'd been backed up all day because of an client earlier that day who showed up late. Then, to speed things up, they decided to do the manicure and pedicure at the same time by putting a tray over my lap. Needless to say my french manicure doesn't have the nice, polished look that I wanted for my pictures but instead is so thick and uneven that it looks like I did it a home with a white-out pen. Since it was a shellac manicure, they had to drape the cord of the UV light across the foot bath which was made me pretty dern uncomfortable since I'm definitely not immune to electrocution. When the woman doing my pedicure finished, it turned out that the woman doing my manicure had taken her flip flops off at some point because "they kept [her] from moving around freely", and the pedicurist accidentally put her flip flops on my feet. She reassured me by saying that she washes her feet everyday. Yup, that made me feel a ton better. After getting out after 2 hours, I only realized that they overcharged after I had already left and was on my way to the dinner reservation that I was ridiculously late for. Their solution was to ask me to drive back to the store so they could fix it. UNBELIEVABLE. read more

Got my first Brazilian with Makiko. It wasn't too hard to find the spa with Google Maps. I booked my appointment online and they expected me. I was nervous and not going to lie...wasn't fun. However, Makiko talked me through, applied pressure and cool water strips after pulling wax and was was kind and told me what to expect.
