I had to make an appointment 2 weeks in advance. Problem was…read morea sporadic hart-to-start and a metal-to-metal clackety noise when starting the car. I said to install a new timing chain and hydraulic tensioner, and inspect the other parts for any that may be bad. Gill's said they will check all the parts after disassembly. It's a 4 hour job to disassemble the top of the engine. After installing a new timing chain and tensioner, Gill's said they had checked everything, and all was ok. I picked up the car and it was better, but I basically had the same hard starting problem and clackety noise as before. Not wanting to wait 2 more weeks for them to look at it, I took the car to another shop. The second shop found what Gill's missed: a bad intake sprocket. Gill's had said, after the repair, that the sprockets, naming them specifically, were ok. The noise is now gone and my engine runs great.

When I checked the alternator prices at various online sellers, the most expensive was $250. Adding that to ~$20 belt + 2 hours of labor (1 hour of labor was $125) + $80 belt replacement = total max $600+tax! Total ripoff and dishonesty!
