This is a great living museum to visit with children to let them experience a real working farm from the perspective of living in the early 1900s. Kids may or may not pick up that they're visiting an "old timey" place. I was just focused on all of the cool things that families could experience: interacting with chickens and other farm animals, playing with old toys, playing pretend in a real kitchen, and lots of other hands-on activities. Visitors are welcome to help do farm chores, like fetch eggs from the chicken coop, which I think is really cool. Kids are encouraged to touch pretty much everything inside and out, which I embrace, 100%. When my kids were young, they needed to be able to interact with the spaces that we were visiting, and this is definitely a place where you can interact with things. The Farm at Prophetstown is great for kids, but they also offer events just for adults, like farm-to-table dinners. Check their website to find out when their special events are happening.

The site is a working farm depicting 1920s farm life, complete with two homes that were built from kits the original owners ordered from the Sears, Roebuck & Co. catalog. They're fully furnished with period-appropriate materials and visitors can browse through at their leisure. There's also a barn for the animals and a blacksmith shop. We had a quick visit because it was a cold, rainy March day, but the animals were a particular highlight. The farm houses were neat, but I think we would have enjoyed them more if we'd visited when there were historic interpreters to discuss the buildings and their contents. Still, a nice afternoon trip.

A hidden gem nestled in Monticello for picking blueberries with the family. It is not a very large…read morefarm but there are plenty of rows of blueberry bushes to make many a picker happy. They have a Facebook page but we noticed no Yelp page. It seems they are a relatively new family business but they are so friendly and kind. Came out here with my toddler and the bushes are just about the perfect height for him to enjoy berry picking. The farm provides the buckets and you can have your pick of a large or small bucket to use. They were open 8-8 yesterday and today. Price per pound was $3. You have to check the Facebook page to see when the different patches of the farm are open for picking. As of this morning there was still plenty left to pick from. Definitely wear a hat and bring sunscreen! They also sell their own raw honey until sold out. If you don't want to pick they have a nice seating area in the field as well as some chairs on the porch (with shade).

It was scheduled for one week but they extended it another week. This was their first year doing it so I think it was a success. It was pretty busy on the beautiful Wednesday evening I went. Lots of ppl taking pics even with professional setups. Tix were $16 or few dollars off if you purchase online. Lots of parking in the gravel/grass. There is a line to buy tix then you grab scissors to cut your own tulips if you want them $2 a tulip. Some of them were dying so they weren't a perfect bloom for a bouquet. The line to pay for tulips was kind of long as well. We spent a couple hours here looking and taking photos. We looked around first before deciding to go back to cut so we lost some time with that. Great photo ops though, highly recommend!

So many cool things about that experience... 1) I used a chainsaw for the first time and now I want to cut down all the trees! 2) We put something that wouldn't fit in our car in our relatively new truck bed... it was sooooo big! 3) While I was there, I bought several jars of their honey (again)! They have completely embraced the "hot honey" trend and are making some amazing honeys that are perfect for a nice "drizzle" on pizza, a Christmas ham or even as a sweetener in your green beans or spaghetti sauce! Their service is fantastic and you're even able to taste a few before buying! Go see them for gift baskets or to join their "honey (not jelly) of the month club" #iykyk
