The VA had come far from where we were at years ago. With more options of being seen by doctors outside of the VA for quicker appointments in case of backups at the VA hospital. A process that is processed by your primary care physician to Community Care for selection of a doctors office and the soonest possible appointment. Also available is My Healthy Vet, which is the quickest way to communicate with your primary physician or the nurse for all of your needs, such as prescription refills, follow up appointments, regular appointments, medical orders for vet, messages, and consult extensions. Emergency room has other doctors assisting during daily working hours for a more efficient process. As always arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment and try to be patient.... read more

The VA is the government's savings program by killing veterans early so they don't have to pay out benefits. They suck so bad that it has to be intentional. I imagine it would be great if they didn't have to deal with all those pesky sick vets and their health problems, so they have really taken up the reins on screwing over the very people they are supposedly helping. Sadly, the system is designed to just transfer doctors who suck so bad that they should would never make it in the civilian community without malpractice lawsuits. I can't attest to what others have experienced and at their specific areas. However, I have always received friendly and professional service from Ortho. Dr. Davis, Fedorko and the nurses are all excellent. The receptionists are also friendly and helpful. I have received the same friendly service from X-rays, mammograms, labs, and the surgery department. and I'm quite pleased with the service. The parking was getting better but it appears to be going back to the previous problem where there's hardly parking available. read more

Went to ER for bronchitis. Was excellent experience, arrived 0715, in the back by 0718 and got meds by 0750.

This is the Absolute Worse Va Hospital to ever go to. I checked in the the emergency room at midnight for a broken foot. I get to the back and the doctor that I seen kept throwing my hand when I asked him not to touch certain areas of my foot. I asked him why does he keep doing that to my hand he says "He does not want to be touched." I'm asking him not to touch my broken foot. I left immediately. So rude. I will be filling a complaint and writing the director of the hospital. read more

Coming from Seattle and receiving inadequate care regarding my health just to come to Hampton and play phone tag for months to get an appointment. There's no time frame for them to establish care and get you in with a provider but if you miss a call and don't get your appointment set up in two weeks, you start the process over with no regard that the hold times are ridiculous and apparently you can't go in person. I have had a pleasant experience at the ER. The staff is always polite and super compassionate. The facility is CLEAN and they have 24 pharmacy available. Oh my, where do I start? The employees take all the patients' parking spots so we are forced to park far away from any medical building at a loading dock in the gravel. I used to have a weekly standing appointment at 0800 and I'd always arrive 30+ minutes early, before the VA employees took all the spots. I wasn't even trying to notice them, but their rush for the spots in the lot between the women's clinic and main hospital is so obvious. They don't care about the patients and seem to believe that veterans deserve the least care possible with the worst attitude imaginable. You ARE a customer, and a patient. These people work for us! I messaged my PCP about recurring bouts of nausea and vomiting. Their nurse told me to go get bloodwork done. I assumed it was in response to me telling them I need to be seen. But NOOOPE! they purposely misled me so I'd feel like I was going to be seen. What a garbage person. The blood work is for my annual next month. What kind of medical team ignores a patient who has complained of nausea and vomiting for 3+ months? The Hampton VA will not care for you unless it's scheduled. So make sure you look into your crystal ball to see when you'll next be sick and make that appointment now. Wait. That's impossible?! There is no way to complain to anybody who can actually change anything. The "patient experience" office does the bare minimum and rarely follows up. I've actually met my clinic manager. Yet now that I'm having problems, they tell me they don't have a manager, and have no idea who I'm talking about. Basically, Hampton VA employees do whatever the hell they want. They think the veterans work for THEM and we're supposed to kiss their butts. They lack the maturity necessary to properly work with veterans. I actually had a person from the Community Care office put words in my mouth about how I called her crazy. No, sweetheart, I said it's crazy that I'm still waiting for 2 referrals that were requested 4 months prior. I don't name-call. It's stutter childish. But I got hung up on that day and I'm supposed to just take it, because the rep wanted to be manipulative. They will absolutely ignore you if you have an acute issue. It's as if they WANT us to self-terminate. I'm 100% p&t. I guess that makes it ok to screw with me, since I'm "stealing" money from them for a myriad of legitimate service-connected issues. This VA is particularly terrible, and I've been to VAs in 3 other southern states. ALL better than Hampton, by far. Way to bury that bar deep in the ground, guys! You're the worst! /s read more

Here is another VA screw up, it's bad enough when I have to jump through hoops to get my Veteran husband an appointment to be seen but now they're sending him other people's medication?! Today my husband received in the mail what was supposed to be a medication for his migraines but instead we received another mans medication for blood clots. If it weren't for us verifying the medication my spouse could of ended up in the hospital. Went into the emergency room with a non emergency issue (think "sick call" or for civilians, Urgent Care). I was seen within an hour of checking in which is not too bad, all things being equal and I received the care I needed. I take away one star because of the amount of time I was on hold. read more

So this is my first long, crappy, VA visit. I spent my Memorial Day Monday in the ER & couldn't get my scrips filled because it wasn't a VA prescription. So the runaround begins! The guy up at the front told me to go to the Pharmacy, Pharmacy tells me I can go to the ER or my primary care physician to get it rewritten. So I tried Prime 2 where my primary care physician works, they tell me that they need my chart from the ER visit before I can get my meds. Wouldn't be a big deal, but I need my antibiotics sooner than later. So I ask them to start the process & head to the ER to see if I can expedite matters over there. A fella working in there eventually brought me back to Prime 2 & had some pointed words for their staff as well as their behavior. Specifically that if they didn't get my meds sorted today to come find him & we can go to the patients advocacy office. So knowing the VA as well as I do, I went to my truck to take a nap for a couple hours before they called & told me to go check-in to the Pharmacy again & then wait for them to get my meds ready. If I had written this review maybe 4-5 yrs ago, when my dad was admitted here for at least a few months for his Cancer treatment, I would have given this place ONE star. Staff was rude. Everyone seemed unavailable, and I just never got a genuine and pleasant vibe from anyone I encountered! After those visits, in my mind, the Richmond VA (Maguire) Hospital is far superior compared to this one. Fast forward to yesterday - I do have to give this place 3 stars now. Yay. Not the best, but not the worst anymore! My dad had outpatient surgery. Everyone I/we encountered was nice, pleasant, far cry from my first experience. My dad's nurse was really nice too, she even wheeled him down to the main entrance and my mom and I got the car and drove up to pick him up. The service was definitely better. The detours and renovation though - that could use some work. I hope it's all finished by the next time we have to come here again, which is hopefully, not anytime soon! read more

So here I am on my psych rotation at the VA hospital in Hampton. One thing that all VA hospitals seem to have in common is the fact that they have a million buildings all numbered, but not located in numerical order. Moreover, the campus layout is CONFUSING. So here is my suggestion, take the time to find out where you are going before you come here otherwise you will be utterly lost like I was! The doctors here so far have been great. What often gets in the way of things is the bureaucracy and the paperwork to get things approved and through to the proper people. The facilities are currently getting upgraded so perhaps in a few more years, this will be a nicer location, but most of the rooms on the inside are old and peely (like paint peeling type peely hahah). Plenty of parking. Make sure to park in guest parking and not in the restricted/staff parking! read more

This organization has far better quality service than what is presented by the news media. They give you a sense of "rolling out the red carpet" in that customer service is 5 stars. To express transparency, the VA has created a website to compare its wait times to other local hospitals. To my surprise, their wait times are better at the VA!!! As far as my medical care, my team of healthcare professionals take excellent care of me. It's not just the doctor alone but him, the nurse, and the clerks at the front desk. Additionally, they allow me better access to my team with a program called "My Healthy Vet". I can email my team and have a reply within 24 hours. Online lab results, access to read the nursing and doctor's reports and I'm still learning all else I have access to. Really loving the World Class Service!!! read more

Great Customer Service! Everyone was very helpful and nice when I arrived for my first appointment at the Hospital. I scheduled for a 6:30pm appointment just because the traffic on 64 is usually pretty terrible. I arrived 15-20 mins early, I was seen right away. The pharmacist was even nice and helpful. I brought my child with me to the appointment and the security guard brought us ginger ale and snacks while waiting for my prescriptions. I would say it was worth the visit and will be returning. Everyone was in good spirits and welcoming! Great job and thanks for the support!! I am very pleased with the service and support!! read more

Hi, I appreciate that the Hampton VA Hospital has Saturday morning hours for the lab to have blood and urine samples taken. This is such a great benefit, because you know how it is during the week, you will be waiting for a while. The rumor is they may cut the Saturday hours do to short staffing, but I hope they don't. I have never had to wait over 10 minutes to be seen for an appointment with Orthopedics, Dermatology, or my Primary Care Porvider. I have had MRIs, X-rays, and ultrasounds and have had great experiences with them too. I now go to the VA for all my health care. Great job Provider Hebert and Dr Davis. Thank you Hampton VA. I was previously at the Louisville KY VA which is absolutely wonderful and everything that it is supposed to be per the current guidelines. We moved to Virginia to be closer to family almost 2 years ago and it has been nothing but the worst example of why VA supposedly hired so many people to fix. I have not a good experience yet despite trying to fix whatever error has caused me to be dropped from their list of enrolled beneficiaries. I've called multiple times only to be on hold or else to have a phone ring without anyone at all answer it. This is also a 24/7 hospital, but was for some reason "temporarily closed" today when I was going to bite the bullet to make the drive up from Virginia Beach to see if going in person would make a difference in fixing my lack of enrollment status. Short of making the 2+ hour drive to Richmond I'm not sure what else to do since the people at the Hampton VA are less than helpful. If anyone is thinking of moving to the area my advice is DON'T DO IT!!! read more

OK thought I would update my review. It's not nice. I'm 100% disabled. Could find NO parking. And yet they have valet parking.. Hmmm just leave your car with the keys in it and hope no one steals it. NO THANKS. I called 6 days ago to get appointment to have a dental filming fixed that was put in a few months ago. Person who answered phone said she would give the department the note. Well, 6 days later, NO call. Guess i should have expected it. So then, i the to the VA, and explain, to only find that my dr is no longer with the VA.. This VA has to be one of the slowest I have ever been to. I have been in the VA hospitals from LA to Missouri and all are never fun but never as slow as this the staff would rather talk to each other then gets patients taken care of. It is called multi tasking everyone, talk and work at same time it's an awesome strategy. Each trip here is always a minimum of 4 hours long, sad just sad. read more

I've been in this system well over 30+ yrs. I have along with other middle aged white women who need to go to the ER. been by the ER physicians profiled as drug seeking,hysterical,mental -attention seeker.. When one female has to force the issue for an X-Ray,that verifies a fractured hip,and myself complaining of s.o.b. chest/back pain,caustic taste but rather than tests- even with knowledge of me as a pain pt- once pain patch seen,Dr walks out,I was dismissed by nurse,sent home considered drug seeking only to need return within 5days with abnormal Heart tests,thus I was transferred to civilian hospital.Cardiologist found pulmonary embolism both lungs,but the VA wouldn't transfer me back,even though orders on chart stated specifically I be transferred back to VA for rehab yet, no VA Dr wanted to accept me and I was sent home alone without any understanding of my condition. My new PC I'd never met...started accusing me of drug seeking-Instead of anyone understanding I needed help,no one cared. My major complaint,Drs cussing me,not allowing me to speak to explain the issue and repeatedly accused of drug seeking. The disproportionate accusations towards pts who advocate for themselves become flagged as disruptive vet. This causes great concern,Staff can/does cuss patients,accuse pts of fabricating symptoms for pity and drugs,coerce --- but let a veteran even raise their voice,security can be called, a Fed ticket can be written .A PC mis-wrote a script so after finally reaching,it was agreed I'd return the meds the next day.I went back as agreed,with meds(narcotics) hand-held- was met by security who stated I had stolen drug from pharmacy(.the script was on computer,labeled,counted,bagged given day before by pharmacy tech(it takes 2 to go narcotics vault-+ I had to sign for it) I was about to be arrested for something I hadn't done. Yeah,there's a great dislike for chronic pain pts. PC Drs don't want them,so there's now a pain management Dr. Sometimes unless there's understanding,it seems that no one wants to help. I honestly don't want to see any more vets already physically suffering feeling the only answer is suicide. That's why- I, whenever I see these places to express how a vet has been maligned at a VA I always attempt to reach out for those who have compassion to literally receive my request in your heart.... ,PLEASE REALIZE NOT EVERYONE CAN SHAKE IT OFF--MAN UP-- PULL YOURSELF UP BY YOUR BOOTSTRAPS .... THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE SUFFERING,VETERANS AREN'T NORMAL PEOPLE, we,VETERANS aren't has beens ,-cowards,-used up collateral damage ...VETERANS ran into the firefight not from it ...so for someone to be so overwhelmed with pain they no longer can see hope...we must help them see suicide not as a permanent solution to a momentary problem. This place is a disgrace! Before moving to Virginia Beach I used the Salem VAMC and the Wytheville CBOC both of which are superb facilities. I expected the same level of care and customer service from Hampton VAMC but I am sad to report that this is not the case. Aside from Radiology the staff is rude, lazy and incompetent. It took 5 visits and 2 months just to be assigned a primary care provider. Twice my records were lost and several forms I was required to submit were apparently thrown away! When I finally did get to see a doctor he was polite and professional but he is the exception to the rule in his clinic. I ran out of supplies for my VA issued CPAP machine in January even though my care team says my doctor ordered supplies in December. The machine has sat on my nightstand unused for over 2 months. Prescription refills require repeated requests. I am currently out of 2 meds and running low on 2 others despite assurances from my team RN that she is "checking into" the matter. At this writing she has been "checking into" one prescription for 2 weeks! In my opinion Hampton VAMC needs a top to bottom staff overhaul. Fire everyone in the building and hire people who are qualified and willing to provide the service our country promised us! read more
