I stayed overnight after knee replacement surgery. Every staff I came in contact with were very nice and attentive!! I have to admit I was somewhat apprehensive about staying overnight, but my stay was excellent!!! The nurses were so friendly and helpful!!! They provided everything I needed before I could even ask. My dad recently had to be admitted here to have tubes put into his kidneys to help with his cancer treatment and the nurses on his floor were so kind and friendly! The oncologist was also super nice as well (Dr. Chen I believe). My dad was well taken care of, so much so that my mom and I even made a Christmas basket for his nurses! They let me shampoo my dad's hair too with these really cool shampoo caps (don't you just love hospital knick knacks lol). All-in-all, the guest policy and treatment was above average, I've been admitted here before and I didn't enjoy the facility but I'm glad that my father was comfortable and supported. read more

MRI tech seemed overwhelmed. She said the power had gone out the day before. "it's been quite a day"; she said. Yet she was not cordial, she didn't wipe down the bench as req. I did it. It seemed she didn't change the sheet on the table. I had to ask her to change her glove which had a hole in it as she was about to insert an IV. I waited until she prepped the site and asked if she was gonna change them at that point. She told me "no". I told her I would prefer that she would. I had to tell her I couldn't hear the commands. She made excuses but with a small adj I could hear. It was the end of her shift so it seemed as though she was rushing. I got the hell out of there with the quickness. She didn't even offer me water after the contrast dye. Wow, the medical industry is GOING DOWN. read more

Recently I was hospitalized with COVID-19. I received amazing care from the nursing staff and doctors at the Sentara CarePlex Hospital. They treated me around the clock almost every hour someone was in my room doing some thing for me. They were very patient, and kind. This was a very scary experience. Covid patients cannot have visitors. It got kind of lonely at times. The nurses were very friendly and did their best to cheer me up. Some of them even sang in my room. They were so sweet. They made my stay much more bearable. They worked so hard. And I appreciate everything they did for me and all the other patients in their unit. Nurses do not get enough credit for all they do! DO NOT GO HERE! $695.00 for a doctor to tell me, not run any test just looked at me and because I have never got the COVID vaccination, he said I had Covid- gave me two Tylenol pills, and sent me home. They kept my husband for over 3 hours, ran test on my husband (not me), and charged him $1,562 I got charged over 2,000$ for a visit back in 2022. I went in with bad back pains, horrible fever, throwing up, etc. "Doctor" came in and asked if I ever got the Covid vaccine. I told him no. He did NOT run any test on me just diagnosed me and only gave me TWO tylenol pills. This place is an absolute joke and I will be taking this to court. These people have NO idea what they're doing and want to charge you $2,000 for a visit! it is absurd. there is a real special place in hell for people like this! believe me when I say, you get what you give. read more

I was in a car accident with my husband and the ambulance took us here. I want to say first and foremost that the staff was pleasant and the quality of care once we were seen was just fine. The assessment rooms were a little barren and cold, but they aren't meant to house you for very long, so that's fine. I'm also "used" to a newer hospital in the area, so I realize that my opinion on what things should look like might be skewed. My largest complaint is that they separated my husband and I. He was on the stretcher and I was not. My knees were swollen and hurt, but I could walk fine and I didn't feel the pain until the ride over to the hospital. They made me separate myself from him and check myself in at the front, telling me I would have to wait to be seen before I could be with him again - and even then, that we would be in separate rooms, but that they would try to get us close together (which they did, and I'm appreciative of that). I understand that there are reasons for processes and to keep people organized, but after having our car totalled and being in a rather traumatic accident, the last thing I wanted to do was be separated from my husband. It only heightened my stress. I wish they would have found a better way to handle this - perhaps have me checked out with him or allow me to sit back with him in a wheelchair...anything that would have made it easier and less painful for us, not more chaotic and lonely. read more

I gave this hospital a 1 star, but note that not all floors and nurses are an issue here. Oh, and most of the doctors aren't bad. My friend went to this hospital and has been there for 2 weeks. She has seen a good share of nurses, but some of them are very rude. She stated that there are about 5 or 6 nurses on the 4th floor that are just down and out rude, and violate Sentara policies. While I was on the phone with her, I heard 3 conversations that went on with these nurses. 2 of the 3 nurses were very rude. Hawroa was bringing my friend some water, she had a cup of ice, set it on the counter because a friend asked about what she was doing this weekend. My friend and I could hear her talking to the person in the hallway, but when she was asked to bring the water again, she gave my friend a really bad attitude, and told her she was not her maid. Oh, and she only gave my friend the cup with ice, but no water. Later that day Code comes in, for no real good reason, and picks a fight with my friend about the conversation she had with this Hawroa. He started making excuses for Hawroa that made no since. He said she was going to get gloves, yet there's gloves right there in the room, so why did she have to go out and talk to the other person? These are just 2 of the 5 or 6, and they are the only 2 I have heard. There was one other nurse that came in to try to work things out between my friend and Hawroa. She she was nice and most of the NCP's are nice too. It's bad that a few bad apples mess things up for everyone. read more

I'm only giving 1 star because of the PA that attended to me. I was brought in by ambulance for an anxiety attack and I'm talking about feet and hands balled up. Paramedics were GREAT but the time I get to the back, I was greeted with no sheets on the bed and it was wet. Then I asked cam I get a sheet on that bed, she said no sheets then wiped the bed off. I lay down because at this point my joints are hurting and I'm also on cancer medication. She comes back with a sheet and throws it over me. So I lay there for about 20 mins and my PA comes in and we talk and everything. She said she's was gonna give me something to help me and calm me. Well to my surprise, her goes the lady that gave me a sheet to go to another room just to take medicine. Like what kind of facility are you guys running Sentara because this is just crazy. I will NEVER return here. I don't care if I was dying TAKE ME TO RIVERSIDE!!!! Services are no longer needed. read more

the room has every been cleaned this is the nastiest hospital I've ever been in... the restroom had other peoples used toilet seats ...When I walked in all off the staff was too busy talking to each other and it was even like that in the back ...I was seen because I could not breathe and came back from the flu for possible secondary infection they gave me a Covid and flu swab which clearly if they look in my chart I already had the swabs... they rushed me out did not do any lung X-rays no breathing test..the dr will read your previous medical history as loud as possible ! read more

After being seen in triage, I was taken back to a room to be assessed by a provider. I waited in this room without being seen for approximately an hour. During this time, I had the "pleasure" of listening to the staff chatting about wine and a party they were all going to. When a nurse finally came in, I was offered medication intended for a different patient, which I would have received had I not questioned the nurse. I was then made aware that the provider had put all of a different patient's information in my chart and a different patient was being treated under my name/information. When I did see the provider, he seemed confused and he was mixing up his words. Please do not go to this facility if you are looking for quality emergency care. read more

Deserves 0 stars. If there is anyone who gives more than zero stars for this god forsaken place then you should be ashamed. I came here a couple of years ago due to a miscarriage. The wait was almost three hours to be seen. The nurses stuck me about five times without being able to get blood. Another nurse laughed at me LITERALLY as she was walking out of my room. I should have sued their Butts!!!!! But I was foolish and just a college student trying to make it to classes. They did nothing for me, they didn't even make sure I had a complete miscarriage. I had to travel ALLL the way back home, which is states away, and see a doctor. One of the most traumatizing experiences of my life. No respect for patients. No regard for peoples time and definitely none for other people's lives. They need to be shut down for too many reasons. Hire new nurses who won't shame women and laugh at them. read more

5 day hospital stay after major surgery- For the most part, care qas sufficient. However, why would any level of nursing staff allow a patient to sleep in recliner for 4 nights/ days - never questioning the medical safety of patient-- Nor offering any alternative- extra pillows, egg crates, a different bed if possible? For a great portion of stay due to procedure, my blood pressure was stroke level. I could have easily slid out of chair due to blood pressure elevation, meds and hallucinations.... Secondly, in 5 day period, room was never cleaned, other than trash emptied... dirty towels, nor linen changed.... nor was I asked did I bathe or need any assistance. Thankful for family and tribe of friends who assisted. IT IS AND WAS NOT THEIR JOB TO DO THE WORK OF THE HOSPITAL STAFF. read more

We've been coming here for my son's speech therapy for 8 months. I can't say anything about their ER or other services, but we're very pleased with those in the Therapy Suite. There's tons of parking and plentiful speed-bumps around the hospital's perimeter to keep people obedient to the 10mph speed limit. Sentara boasts a cafe somewhere on premises -- I'll give it a try next time and let you know. The only gripe I have is the too-loud CNN always on in the waiting room. Sorry, I'd rather watch the Weather Channel -- better journalism. read more

0 rating for my moms stay!!! My mom was admitted to Sentara Care plex in January 2021 and died at this horrible hospital February 22 2021. I wanted my mother to be transferred to VCU MEDICAL CENTER IN RICHMOND, VA. To start off my mother's diet was crackers, pudding and Jello because the food was so bad. The nurses was the most disgusting nurses I had ever met for an ICU floor. One of the nurses by the name of Kimberly told me and my mom that she wasn't going to change her DNR because she had just did the paperwork two hours ago. And when I spoke with supervisor she stated" Kimberly had just started in ICU and she was just frustrated that day." I was told by one nurse that my moms nurse didn't work 24 hours a day as if I knew what time her shifts were. I visited my mom on February 14th and she was fine. Monday morning I received a call stating my moms oxygen had dropped. Later on that night my mom called and said they lied to me and a nurse had allegedly dropped her on the floor. When I asked the nurse name Emily had a report been made she said no and tried to be smart about it. I was also told they only make reports when the patient is dropped to the floor. My mom said she tried to move her from chair to bed and that's when it happened. The doctor was constantly coming in the room so could pull the plug on my mother as if he was paying the bill. And its so much more. I now have to bury my mom. Had she went to VCU like she asked she would still be here. They had every reason why they couldn't transfer her. First they said another doctor would have to accept her. So I called and talked to her doctor who stated she had not heard from Sentara. Then they said She could go on patient wishes. Then they said VCU didn't have any beds. At that time they had three beds. When they told that lie. Then they said VCU had to be able to do something they couldn't. VCU could do more because she would be alive if she was their. They messed up her medications and so much more. If its anybody on here who would like to reach out to me please do so!!! Great facility. I was greeted immediately with a smile and hello. Directed where to go each step of the way. Always by someone whom appeared happy to help. A hospital needs to omit this kind of atmosphere towards everyone. Regardless of why people are there; visiting a hospital/clinic is never a pleasant experience. I had an early morning appointment and everyone still seemed to be in a good mood. Due to the sensitivity of why I was there I was put at peace by all the staff and nurses that I talked too. A minor glitch with not finding my name in the computer system was quickly fixed and each department I visited was run in an orderly fashion. My questions were answered to my satisfaction and my privacy was maintained as well. I appreciated the heads up when I left to expect a followup call and to not necessarily be over concerned it was protocol. I felt comfortable and at ease with my visit to this facility. read more

This hospital is truly the worst. I've had multiple families spend multiple visits here and most every visit has been absolutely the worst experiences I've ever encountered at a Hospital. Let me also mention that I've had to be in/around hospitals my entire life. In 2014 my Mom was in this hospital for about 2 weeks. She came in with shortness of breath and was treated with the bipap machine for most of her visit. Because my Mom can get pretty anxious they started giving her Ativan, which come to find out, she's allergic to. It seems that it's standard procedure here that if a patient is less than calm, collected, happy and basically a vegetable, that they give Ativan like it's candy. Unfortunately, it causes my mother to hallucinate and be extremely paranoid. When I asked them what was going on, since it seemed she was losing her mind and getting worse rather than better, they told me that my Mom was having withdrawals from her Xanax. WHICH she only took 1/2 of an already halved dose AS NEEDED which maybe for her was once every 2 weeks. Finally, when they stopped giving her Ativan she was normal again and finally able to recover. Also I should mention that they chose the moment when my mother was most out of her mind and completely clueless about reality to send security up and take her valuables (rather than me taking them?) and I find that super sketchy. How do you expect someone half out of their mind to sign a document confirming they took your wallet full of cash and credit cards, jewelry, cell phones, etc? A year later my Uncle ended up in this same hospital. He has, just a few weeks prior, had been at the VA Hospital for the same reasons and for a longer duration of time and after being at Sentara a couple days started acting very much the same as my mother, paranoid, hallucinations and guess what.. THEY WERE GIVING HIM ATIVAN, TOO! Not to mention he kept having blow outs and had him in quarantine because of it but they were still giving him laxatives???? How does that make sense? And finally, my mother just spent another two weeks being treated at this hospital and she unfortunately passed away. I was unfortunately not in the state so I couldn't even monitor the situation as well but they said she was extremely anxious and agitated so I half believe they were probably giving her Ativan again. Afterwards I had to go to security to pick up her belongings that I half expect they waited, again, for her to be completely incapacitated to confiscate. I only just realized that her fitbit is missing and was not in the security lockbox with the rest of her belongings (her cellphone and ONE earring, bet there was two when she got there). So I expect that was stolen or conveniently NOT recorded. On top of ALL of that.. the communication in this place is AWFUL. I witnessed nurse shift changes that was like playing a giant game of telephone. Every nurse added something new to the chart and one I encountered decided to make it make believe storytime and made up a completely fabricated story about my mother and her health history. And when I was talking to them at a distance I rarely got important calls, and every single nurse told me something different so I felt so out of the loop. Advice to the Hospital: Stop giving Ativan out like candy to all your patients and stop waiting until patients are medicated and completely out of sorts to collect their valuable belongings. Advice to Patients: Avoid this hospital like the plague if you value your life, the lives of your loved ones, your sanity and your belongings. Edit: Also they stole her Fitbit Charge HR, guess security forgot to lock that with her belongings too. read more

I was at this hospital for a heart procedure and found the care to be seriously unprofessional and dangerous. I could give a long list of serious failures but I will mention just one. After the procedure I was sent to my room at 3:30 PM. I was supposed to be connected to a heart monitor as soon as I came into the room. They finally brought the monitor and connected it at 4:30 AM. I was not monitored for 13 hours. I could have died and they would not have know! Several other SERIOUS errors occurred. read more

Just don't get it. Ambulance brought mother in at 3:10 in the afternoon. Wait time to have ct scan over an hour since the doc ordered. Now on 3.5 hours since rolled in staff just are not aiming to reduce overall stays. They don't really care to get patients situated and diagnosed And sent home where they do best. I am personally not happy about how this has gone down. The last place anyone should want to be is a sentara carplex er. Healthcare is up in smoke! There are a few kind people here but for the most part most seem dis interested in taking care of patients in the most effective way without the extreme waits. Now working on 5 hrs here. Ct has been done for over an hour. Shift change but nothing else has. Still disinterested in patient care. I do not understand how a rating can be 70% satisfied when they treat people like this. Omg. 6 very unpleasant hours. What a freakin disaster this place is. Iv improperly put in and came out. Now they cannot dispense pain meds another half hour to think about what to do. Patient had to wet the bed. I think Riverside might be a better choice. read more

I grew up around Sacred Heart so I am used to 5 star care and attention (family used sacred for ER trips, OBGYN and delivery, speech therapy, NICU, etc) so I am usually disappointed when I go to other hospitals but I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was caring and professional. The rooms were clean and comfortable. They had outstanding attention and treatment. Will use them for future medical needs. read more

Just got out of the ER a few nights ago. I was extremely pleased with the staff there. I am an employee there but never had any interaction with the nurse and doctors of the ER. They were professional and friendly and made me feel like I was in good hands. I was afraid to go to "my own" hospital but they were warm and didn't treat me any differently. I am absolutely disgusted with the way I have been treated since going to the hospital. I came into the hospital to test for Covid 19, which scared me to death. I checked in and was greeted by a wonderful sweet lady, she was very helpful. Once I went to the back I had a nurse give me an X ray, then I had someone else come in to swab my throat and to do my Covid test. This nurse was not pleasant at all. With this being such a new and scary thing to people she should've had more patients and compassion. She tried swabbing my throat for a strep test and out of a nervous reaction I bit down, she went to grab a tongue depressor and tried again. I also bit down on that as well, she started to get annoyed and stated she will just say I refused. I expressed to her that she can try again I was just nervous. She told me that it just needs to get done and no one likes it. The third time she was able to get the test done. At this point I'm feeling very upset due to her lack of patients. The doctor did come in to speak with me and advised me if I did test positive to quarantine for 14 days I got a prescription and I was discharged. O called back a few days later for my results and I was told I was positive, and that's all. The nurse said nothing else after that just a silence. I've had the health department call me and give me more information about Covid then the people who get paid at the hospital. Today I tried calling about results I got on the app and while being transferred I'm trying to explain why I'm calling and trying to figure out who I need to speak with. The lady in the phone states that no one can give medical advice over the phone. I advised her I don't need medical advise I just need to understand why this means in the middle of me talking she bling transfers me to a department that was also unable to help me. I am all and all disgusted with the way I have been treated. No one at this hospital has been helpful at all, and if they still get paid. I also have to pay out something as well. WORST HOSPITAL EVER !!! They are so dirty here . My boyfriend and I came through the Emergency lobby and there was trash every where on the floor . The guy that was at the front of the counter reeked like cigarettes. He stepped outside for a few , came back and didn't even wash his hands . After waiting an hour we finally go to the back and go in a room where the trash cans are full and it smells like straight piss ! I'm guessing that the maintenance man didn't come or they really suck at cleaning up after themselves . It's like as soon as you get threw the back your still waiting for somebody to come to you . When the doctor comes in he doesn't even wash his hands, he comes in a straight touches on my boyfriend . First and four most your supposed to wash your hands . I don't know where your hands have been ! When I asked him about the trash can he just brushed off what I said . When the nurse came in I asked about it and he said that they didn't clean up this side of the area yet . Another Nurse came in and I asked her if I could just put the trash cans outside of the room and she replaced the trash for us. Without the doctor even coming in to see how he was doing , the nurse said that he was being discharged. Why would you discharge my boyfriend if he is still in pain? He is in a sickle cell crisis right now and you are letting him go when he is still in pain...WOW !!!! I will NEVER come here after this experience . read more

I had an outpatient procedure performed at Sentara in Hampton yesterday. I have never been so impressed by a hospital, the nurses were amazing - the kindest, most loving nurses I've ever met. They had a great sense of humor and took great care of me. Do not waste your time going to this hospital. We arrived here with our son and were greeted quickly. The nurses and registration agent were fast and efficient. I'm not sure if it's because we arrived at 4:00 am and maybe the cleaning crew hadn't been in, or if they generally do not take care of their center, but there was trash everywhere. Kids' surgical masks lying in the lobby, trash tucked into chair cushions, and something that closely resembled fecal matter on the floor in the corner of the lobby. There were also multiple homeless people sleeping in the center as soon as you walk in. We were taken back to a room about 20 minutes after checking in, gave all of our information to the nurse, and proceeded to wait 45 minutes for a doctor. In the meantime, an X-ray tech came to the room to get my son for X-rays, which we had not been told of prior. Doctor comes in and is terribly condescending with both myself and my husband, and proceeds to tell us that we can continue our son's medication if we 'would like'. Also states that he will get our discharge papers to us 'as soon as he can' because he has some other things to tend to and isn't sure how long it will be. With his track record already not being favorable, I had my husband and kids to go the car to wait while I waited for paperwork. I waited 30 minutes and left. This entire visit was nothing short of disgusting and unacceptable. read more

If I could give this facility no stars, I would. I went into the emergency room 10/11/16 with what they dismissed as "normal female problems" and told that if things don't get better within a week to either come back or follow up with a primary care physician. I returned a week later to have a urine specimen cup given to me before even getting checked in. I waited an hour and a half before being loaded into a room. Once in the room, my insurance information was collected. I then waited another 2 hours with NO service, not even someone stopping in to check on me. I walked out and stopped at the nurses desk to let them know that I was leaving due to not being seen. I received the bill for my first visit, understandably, and worked out a payment plan. It was when I received a bill almost twice as much for the visit in which I walked out that I became very unsatisfied. I called and spoke to customer service about how I was never seen and they sent my case to an Audit. I then received a bill from a collection agency for this same visit. I called the collection agency and explained once again that I was never seen, and the collection agency representative told me that they would be putting a hold on my account. Approximately 6 months later, I was diagnosed by Riverside practices with 3 types of high risk precancerous cells, and have since had surgery to remove those cells. Maybe it's just me, but the risk of cancer and the necessity for surgery, does not seem like "normal female problems." Shortly after having surgery with Riverside, I received a bill from Sentara again. I called customer service once again. The first representative I spoke with was extremely rude and literally said, "I don't know what to tell you. You have a balance of $XXX.XX that needs to be paid." I called back and spoke with a second representative, who got me in touch with a manager. The manager I spoke with said that the audit on my account appartently states that I did in fact leave, however, I was still responsible to pay for seeing the doctor and for services rendered. How is it that it is noted by not just me, but their employees/representatives that did the Audit, that I WAS NOT SEEN, but I am responsible for paying as if I had been? Do yourself a favor and steer clear of the emergency room at Sentara Careplex. read more

I've been there for surgery and other tests and have had a good experience. I would not go there for the ER. I had cut my finger pretty good. I was in and in within an hour on a holiday weekend, however I did not have a lot of confidence in the care I received. In the end, they super glued my cut, a crappy job I might add. I was at my regular doctor three days later because I had a very bad infection. My doctor said due to the location and depth of the cut, I should have had stitches. I was billed for over $300 and that is with insurance, not to mention the other costs of going to my regular doctor because of the infection. read more

Worst hospital ever. My mother was brought in by ambulance and has been waiting in the waiting room for 4.5 hours!!! If she has to wait any longer, believe me, I will sue this hospital for all its worth. She is screaming from the pain she's in. Absolutely rediculous! read more

Arrived at this ER at 10:30pm after a bout of chest pain and elevated blood pressure. I was quickly greeted, questioned and given an EKG. A few more questions later had me waiting...waiting...waiting...while several kids with cold symptoms and one with a split lower lip were brought back to exam rooms. All this time there was a woman in obvious serious pain and me simply waiting for hours. After three hours I decided that since I was still lucid and alive, I could wait and see my own doc in the morning rather than waiting around for who knows how long. It seems their triage system is non-existent; I get it that the staff can't control who comes in for what, but to prioritize obvious non-emergency cases over serious pain and potential serious conditions is unconscionable. If there is a next time that has me seeking emergency care not involving an ambulance I'll be sure to try somewhere else. read more

This is our first visit to the pain management doctor here at 4000 coliseum dr. We had a 1:30pm appointment and it is now 3pm and no doctor. If a business can not even keep an appointment kind of close. What is the actual care going to be like? Doctor does not have clue. No help whatsoever. read more
